  • I explain why you would upgrade the rear sway bar on a Volkswagen Golf Mk7 GTI and also the cornering results of going from a 20mm stock sway bar to a 26mm H&R rear sway bar on my 2017 Volkswagen Mk7 Golf GTI. The results after installing the H&R 26mm rear sway bar on my 2017 Golf GTI were impressive. I love the way the car turns in to the corner with the new rear sway bar. Installing the 26mm H&R rear sway bar on my VW Mk7 Golf GTI was a drastic improvement on the corner. The car handles a lot more confidently through hard and long cornering.
    It is very common for the stock sway bar setup on a car to cause it to push. This is safer for the general user, but not optimized for cornering performance. By upgrading to a thicker rear sway bar you balance out the weight being transferred to your outside tires, resulting in faster cornering and more grip.

    It was fun to see how much more cornering force was added by installing the H&R Rear Sway Bar on the Mk7 GTI!

    finally a video on the sway bar with some actual data! Great job. all other reviews were "feels tight" 😑. Have you pushed it passed the limit of rear grip yet? is it progressive or oops I'm dead?

      Haven't had a chance to push it past what I've done on the street. Will have to take it to autocross sometime and find the limits! That way it's just "oops a cone" 😂. It seems pretty predictable though

      Another good video showing the effect on AWD MQB chassis. Not sure if this is more or less applicable for my golf R. Either way looks good in both yours FWD and the below vid AWD th-cam.com/video/wKEjsSWXL3M/w-d-xo.html

    I'm assuming your car did not have Dynamic chassis control?
    My 2015 GTI with DCC had the ability to hold sustained speeds of 180km/h and almost 1.5 Gs on our race track. That was with Michilen PS4S tires.
    My new 2024 GTI with no DCC is definitely trying to kill me in high speed corners because of a lack of stability. I'll probably go the same route...better tires first and a rear sway bar with adjustable end links....Or trade the damn thing in for a car WITH DCC.

      You are correct, it was a sport so no DCC. Tires are certainly 95% of the equation. When I installed Bilstein b14 coilovers the ride was much better!

    why did you go with 26mm over like a 24mm rsb. Also would 24mm rsb better for like a daily driver which I take to the track and canyon roads once in a while

      It popped up on the forums for a good price. I honestly haven't noticed any additional harshness in ride quality when switching to the bigger bar and it definitely improves handling through the corners. If you are acutely aware of your ride quality I'd maybe suggest a 24mm bar though (my tolerance may be higher). I honestly think the OEM suspension is already a little bouncy, the Bilstein B14's have helped, but if I'm on the wrong road the short wheelbase of this car gets bouncy.

      Can you drop the link to that forum topic as I have been looking for a week to understand the difference between 26,25 and 24””. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

      I was just saying I picked up the 26mm bar on the forums, not that there was a discussion. The more I've driven the car, I really don't think there was any noticeable harshness caused by the 26mm rear sway bar. A 24mm bar would just be less noticeable over stock and be less likely to cause an oversteer scenario than a 26mm bar. You would have to mess up pretty bad to oversteer with even the 26mm bar though

      For sure, thank for the response. I’m dipping my toe into this hobby in which I am over thinking things to make sure I make the best decision possible.

    Just wondering does the new rsb feel more sketchy when cornering hard. Also when u lift off do you notice it coming loose?

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried to upset the car intentionally while cornering, but it definitely gives the car a way more direct feel. I will have to take it to autoX to really find those limits!

      @Joe-eg7ml 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HardwayLearning so the car is an improvement with the 26mm rsb? You are able to drive the car at higher limit compared to stock?

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Joe-eg7ml yes, there is less push through the corner and you can feel the rear of the car want to rotate with the car more. I absolutely love the feel of it with the new swaybar!

      Lol i get it. I just wanted to know how far i could push mine. I have a 2017 Tornado red GTI with the performance package. Mine is a DSG. It handles really good. I just want to know how far i can push it before reaching her limits in the corners.

      @HardwayLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My guess would be around 45 or 50, but I wasn't really watching my speedometer to be completely honest 😂

      @@mikej2264 imma bit late. I have a 16 gti s 2 door 6spd. Car is stock other than some trans mods as of recent. But as for stock i ran it both with just the tires that came from the dealership and recently 2 falken azeni fk510s at 215/40/18 on the front wheels only. Stock height and non pp. I could take some corners that were relatively sharp at around 80 after lots of practice and on the mountain/ canyon near me the group can average 35-65 depending on the corner but it is quite techincal. For your car it should be much easier to go quicker since youll be able to keep both hands on the wheel where im fighting with revmatching the downshifts. The cars stock handle very well even compared to something like an frs, genesis coupe, civic. Id say these cars mainly shine with lots of practice as itll keep up with modded things with just a set of tires. Id suggest doing brakes and tires and youll have an incredibly easy time on the canyons, i am also open diff and with the non pp brakes and duralast pads so its not exactly the most built thing but is still very quick.

  • @brizower

    More G's just means you're cornering harder. You should have measured degrees of body roll.

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm cornering harder, doesn't that mean it is also taking the corner faster? If the car was pushing before and the sway bar balances out the grip from rear to front, it's cornering faster right?

    • @brizower
      @brizower 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HardwayLearning we know sway bars work.
      What I'm saying is measuring G's this way just measures how hard you're driving your car. Unless you measured G's at the point of losing traction all you did was measure how hard you were willing to push the car.
