I had a JRT from when i was 10 years old till i was 26. Very high energy and love to chase other dogs, the bigger they were the more aggressive he would be. Only thing he was afraid of was our big , grouchy 22 pound cat.

We had a JRT when I was a kid in the 1960s (being a kid is my excuse). It was not trained or particularly well looked after. It was destructive and on occasion very aggressive to strangers. I loved that dog but I look back in shame even though I was only a kid at the time. Good video, I wish my father had seen it.

I have a jack pit and hes the best dog I've ever owned. Hes definitely high maintenance, but I have all the time in the world for him.

I owned a Shiba Inu which I heard was one of the hardest dogs to own. They aren't food driven and have no interest in pleasing you. I thought this dog was difficult. It was nothing until I got a Jack Russell. Everything you said is true...

Mine was kind of a couch potato, and not very smart.
But very strong prey drive. Killed a lot of mice, caught some hedgehog (luckily she couldn't get past the spines), chickens (we managed to save them, but she probably would have killed them) ... even a duck once (they're surprisingly good at playing dead). I didn't hate that side of hers, except when she found a mouse and was barking at midnight (as I said, not very smart, as if it would come out of its hole with a dog barking outside🙄).
Very stubborn though (but it was my first dog and I was too young to train her properly, and we didn't have internet to help at that time ... but if we had, I probably would have picked another dog and miss out on a wonderful companion), and an escape artist in her young years.
      I still miss her.

I had my JRT for almost 14 years and he was the most loyal, loving dog I've ever had. I will have another. Correction - I DO have another.

One thing you didn't mention is that they are baying Terriers and can be very vocal. Great as a guarding dog, not so good for the neighbours.

The honest truth is, don't get a JRT, if you don't love dogs. A JRT will become your best friend and you will do everything together. The problems will be real if you only have one dog. I had a JRT and a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They exercised each other. I only needed to drive them places. The JRT wanted to drive. She could not reach the peddles and see out the windshield at the same time. She was never really a problem dog ever, but I like dogs. If are not committed or have a lot of people in the family to help, it could be a chore.

When I brought MY Jack Russell home when it was a puppy, I thought it was going to be a GIANT dog when it grows up, but I soon found out, that it stays tiny forever. I’ve had one for 5 years now, & it’s NOT the dog I want, because The AKC Company (American Kennel Club) does NOT, recognize that tiny, feisty breed!!! I live in a HUGE, OPEN area, but with NO FENCING!!! A Jack Russell is TOO small, noisy, & smelly for me to own, because I do NOT, want to have ANY baths, READY for it!!! My Jack Russell ALWAYS sheds LOTS of fur, & NOW there’s dog hairs ALL around my house!!! My Jack Russell likes to be vocal, because when I hear it barking, its bark, where it lets out a SHRIEK, is like a burning stick that lit me on fire, & when it wakes up, it will start to bark, 24-HOUR NONSTOP ALWAYS!!! Every time I watch size comparison videos that have dogs in them, ALL of The OTHER TH-cam users that MADE them, ALWAYS have their minds FIXED on ADDING Jack Russells IN to them, & I do NOT WANT THAT!!! And Yes., You we’re right., A Jack Russell has one of The HIGHEST PREY DRIVES of ANY dog, because whenever I see cats that are NOT Maine Coons in my yard, & my Jack Russell starts running up to them, I ALWAYS have to SAVE them, FROM it!!! I only want a PARSON Russell, & after watching How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift?, I CAN’T lose weight while it’s in my household, like how I watched Sakura Hibiki lose weight, because its bark, STOPS me from losing weight, because The SMALLEST dog, that ALLOWS me to lose weight, is a German Pinscher, which is The smallest dog I WANT!!! I JUST found out, that a Jack Russell can kill snakes, because THAT, is HOW I KNOW, that a Jack Russell is AGGRESSIVE enough, to fight an American Bandogge. And ANOTHER thing I knew, was that a Jack Russell can be used for herding & fighting, so THAT means I need The BIGGEST dog, that is The BEST at winning against a Jack Russell in a fight, because THAT, is a dog that can SAVE ME, from the Jack Russell I DO NOT WANT to OWN at ALL!!! 😞😞 😣😣 😫😫 😩😩 😭😭 😬😬 🥶🥶 😨😨 😰😰 😢😢 😥😥 😓😓 🤕🤕 🤒🤒 🤯🤯 😿😿 🥺🥺 😠😠 🥵🥵 😖😖 😡😡 🤬🤬 😤😤 😾😾 👿👿

@koltybam3800 - your message is soooo confusing but sounds like you have a Jack Russell and don't want it and can't lose weight. Well if you walked it twice a day you would probably lose weight and it would be a better dog. That would be a start.

It doesn't sound like you wanted your poor pup in the first place... Jack Russell Terriers are amazing and incredible dogs (especially the English variety) and can excel in dog sports, as therapy/service dogs, as well as be great as all around family members. What you described sounds like a Jack Russell who has NOT been exercised, stimulated, or raised properly by a dedicated guardian who understands their needs and fulfillment requirements. Give them a job to do and build a wonderful relationship based on teamwork, mutual respect, and understanding, and you will be surprised with the incredible feats these dogs will do for you.
Jack Russells are recognized by the AKC as Russell Terriers and by the English Jack Russell Terrier Club Alliance (EJRTCA). Parson Russells usually have a higher prey and wander instinct to work independently (unless purposely bred out of them by a particular breeder for a more companion bred dog - losing their working ability) Parsons can be true-grit hunting dogs. Please stop spreading misinformation about JRTs due to the public stigma from poorly educated and under socialized dogs from this particular breed due to their over popularity and cuteness factor...
As with any breed, doing your research before getting a breed can do wonders, and genetics of each particular dog can play a role for sure. I would recommend getting a Jack Russell from a quality breeder who raises them well, health tests, and starts socialization and training before you bring them home to raise a sound dog overall; one who can accompany you on many of life's adventures as a best friend.
