i have had jacks for over 50 years at least 2 at a time and as many as 6 at a time. Having 2 is highly recommended so they can tire each other out. In the many years having these guys, two great things that happened. First, I was while mowing one day and I ran over a ground hornets nest. I was stung many times while running across the yard. I called my jacks in the house, all came but one, he went and sat on the nest to protect me !!!! The 2nd great thing, was having a seizure in my living room while my wife was sleeping and one of my jacks ran into the bedroom and woke my wife up, I credit him for saving my life!!!!! I LOVE MY JACKS !!!!!!

I crate trained my JRTS. I never took one home from the breeder before 9 weeks old. They need a little extra maturation. As new pups I never let their feet touch the floor first thing in the morning. I carried them to outside , set them down in the grass and off they went to pee. Fortunately it worked for both Jack's and we never had an issue. They rarely had a pee pee accident and never a number 2 accident. If there was a pee slip up they were mortified. Best dogs ever. I miss them everyday.

Hey Josh, Love your videos... I have a JRT rescue, and can relate to everything you post. I was fortunate enough to work in the Doggie Defense Unit when I was doing my national service for a year, training defense force dogs. I ended up in the Puppy Breeding unit for 8 months - One of the most special times in my life. Commenting on your points, #1 JRT's need, and drink a-lot of water, therefore they pee a-lot. As with all dogs, they need an immediate routine and timed pees to get them potty trained. JRT's seem to drink a-lot more water than other breeds which makes this so important. Positive reinforcement can be purely verbal, and/or treats. #2 Exercise for these highly energetic pups is so important. They really need 45 mins twice a day as a rule. They are at their best in big open spaces and are born killers. Killers of rats, cats, snakes or birds.., (Anything that moves). Their courage is incredible and are readily prepared to fight to protect their humans to the death. Their hunting instinct has been bred into them to kill foxes, et. al., and that is exactly what you are going to get. They are trained by instinct to snap the spine of their prey on first contact. They don't hunt for food, they hunt to please their owners and will proudly bring their hunt to you (Much to our disgrace at times). We can't shout them down for this, they do it to please us. #3 Like all dogs, it's all about routine and consistency. Going potty, feeding times and your own routine, they don't miss a trick. #4 Punishment - This is an absolute NO in all regards. Dogs are all about training, if they fail, you have failed them. They are not to blame. If you want a pet to live in fear, it will perhaps work, but they will never be a pet. If you want a lover to live in fear, the same principle applies. #5 Big open spaces and always access to a yard. These dogs are not meant to live in confined spaces - no apartment living. #6 Once a dog has maked a spot to pee, they will return, so make sure to clean very well #7 Re-affirm and re-apply consistency, Dogs like us, are social animals, and need affirmations on their actions. #8. Don't think you can out smart a JRT, you will lose. They will test you every day to determine your limits. It's one of their prime talents! And we love them for all of the above... Love to Luna!

( parson JRT - continued) it took approximately 2.5 years of love and respect on both sides to bring out her loving, playfull nature , and make her happy ~ loved all kids, some people, hated other Dogs and cats with a vengeance, came everywhere with us , the rescue centre recon she was 8 years old when we got her , had a delightful life with her for another 8 years, lost her to a stroke, what a lovely dog you were Molly!
      Fallen in love again!
This time with a shorty 90% JRT /10% pug , what a great little fella he is, 8years old, full of beans , same again, loves kids and people, hates all big Dogs especially, and foxes, sleeps on the bed, comes everywhere with me ~
Jack Russells, like marmite , you either love them or can't stand them!
I love them, so full of life and devotion, unlike most people I come across!!!!

Thank you these are helpful. I got Jack by trickery at the groomers. They had two corrals full of “ Morkies!” that they were selling at the groomers. I took the smallest puppy in the corral.
Which turned out to be a Jack Russell 3 pounds, barely taken away from his mom and siblings way too early. So training is going very slow because he’s really too young. I’ve had him two months, and he still barely 8 weeks! The two issues I have is house training, and nipping. I don’t wanna punish him. For the nipping anytime that happens, everything stops. I have everything the crate, the trees, the leash harness the gates.
This Jack doesn’t like the leash and HATES the harness. It’s the lightest harness, I could find, made out of like shoelaces, so light, not tight, and he just refuses to walk with the harness on.
With the leash on you guys to make a loop and carry the leash partially in his mouth I don’t blame him. It probably hurts his neck so I can’t let him run free. He’s way too little 5 pounds now.
Any advice from anybody I would love to have. Being taken away from his siblings and mom, this early, I have to keep my eyes on him all the time it’s taking up my life. He is the cutest little thing, and I want him to be a well-adjusted little loved guy.

I adopted Harry from a shelter. Although they told me he’s a chihuahua, he’s clearly too tall and too athletic. Everyone tells me he’s a Jack Russell or a Jack-Cha. I love watching your video, because he is so much like Luna. Always underfoot or in my lap, bouncing against my legs or aggressively chewing on a toy. He’s wonderful, but I need to assert some authority.
This is a helpful and fun watch. I’m going to get some of those tiny treats and accompany him even more than I already do. Thank you❤️

They are amazing dogs and extremely intelligent. I bought one for daughter when she was 4, thought he's just a small dog what can go wrong . Big mistake, he caused so much trouble. He just passed away 11 days ago and was almost 19. He would escape and the Dog catcher would chase him. He never got caught, seen him swim across the creek and walk up and down looking at the dog catcher. I got so many warnings but no fines because he couldn't catch him. He would steal bones from the Rottweilers even when he was very sick . 3 days before he passed away we had a thunder storm. Rottweilers were at the back door scared . He went out the cat flap and stole their food eating it in the rain . He knows they won't come after him. Wasn't a day he didn't work out a scheme and always up to no good . Would always come to see if I'm ok no matter what. On camping trips he was a perfect dog , at home he was a little gangster . Miss him so much that I just got another Jack Russell pup. Hes best friends with the Rottweilers, all 3 are at the gate barking at everything. He's close to the male Rottweiler, they're the odd couple . This time I'm training him, don't want another gangster .

We have a pet flap but with my JRT’s in winter we still get the odd accident. We have trained them, gone out with them, walk them, etc. They just have the rain so occasionally we find an accident when it’s cold & wet. We do clean up the pee with urine destroyer. It’s never in the same place twice. They are fine most of the year but they seem to hate it when it’s both cold & wet. We even got a specialist trainer in. Even though we have tried every trick in the book & we still get the odd accident. JRT’s are just sooooo stubborn no matter how much we reward them for going outside.

My JRT Riva likes her privacy and will look for nooks and crannies (if at all possible) to hide and do her “things”! She is very clean - she’s 15 months old, and hadn’t peed inside for months and only broke the rule last week but she had a difficult night vomiting and she wasn’t well. She’s back to her normal routine and asks to go outside and she holds her pee a long time! She is a fantastic dog ❤!

Been trying this with our miniature JRT since we brought him home on September 10th but he is very inconsistent. Mostly he is doing something when we take him out but he is still using his puppy pads and the carpets which is really annoying. He gets treats but he is not a foodie! We will keep training but he can go 3 or 4 times in the space of 10 minutes!

So we got a Jack Russell Mix puppy when she was only 2 lb I was told she was 8 weeks old she was the runt, unfortunately I live in a very cold climate and it was the wrong time to get a dog going into the winter she was tiny and shivered all the time and now she's 5 months old and it's still winter with hopefully heading into spring soon but yeah she trained on the pee pee pad which I don't like but she uses it she knows if she has an accident that she runs right back to the pad like oops but I'm hoping that once the good weather comes I'll be able to stop that all at once I do try to take her out consistently at the same time every day or if she goes to the door often it's just too damn cold to be out there for very long do you think it will be easy to transition her to just go outside once the weather is nicer?

I have two Jack Russell’s who are brother and sister from different litters, they were both so easy to train (within the first week). The bitch had puppies 9 weeks ago now and we decided to keep a male from her litter. We’ve now had only him for a week and we’re struggling a lot with toilet training. I think it’s because he’s been used to peeing here for so long with the litter and we allowed it (as it would be impossible to potty train 6 of them at once) so we’re just struggling to get him out of it now. We take him in the garden every two hours between naps and he just doesn’t understand that he’s allowed to pee out there, he decides to eat the grass while we’re out there, run around like a loon for an hour then come back in and pee straight away. It’s so difficult to not lose patience with him but I know we will get there. After all, it’s been a week! 😂

Eating grass is a sign of stomach ache. Our jack Russell does it Everytime summer comes. She's old so I guess summer messes with her

This part of training is frustrating for sure but keep things consistent you have to teach them in a way they understand watch youtube videos and take them out every hour atleast if they have a huge drink 5-10 mins after they need to go

I have only had my 10 week Jack Russell terrier for 1 week. It is extremely cold where I live and he refuses to go to the bathroom outside. We will stand outside for a decent amount of time and he cries and climbs up my leg and I don’t want to leave him out too long when it is very cold. I put a puppy pad by the door and he does decently well with going on that right next to the door and I always reward him when he goes on the pad. When it warms up is it going to challenging to transition to outside? You’re videos have made me feel so much better especially about crate training! Thank you!!

May I add re peeing inside the house when trained to going outside. I had issues with my JRT all of a sudden peeing inside and found out from the vet it’s the way the dog is telling you it has a urinary tract infection.

We were kennel training him bit soon stopped as we seen how willing we has to go outside, Even with the bigger dogs. Energy, energy, energy... that's what he is....
His name is BOGEY. Wish I could post pics in the comments.

    List of things that have been peed upon;
    carpet, obviously,
    Japanese English dictionary,
sketch pad opened to my latest work of art, now abandoned,
old work jumper that I was using as a cushion on my milk crate foot stool,
a table tennis paddle that was left on the floor,
radio control rat controller (not the rat that he chases),
my wife's slipper, and she only realised when she put her foot in it,
occasinally on the bed, but only when my wife is being lazy.
I installed a pet door and now he mostly goes outside to pee, mostly...

I would say at this point it's best to wait it out when your outside.
Heavily reward them as well once they do their business outside and start cementing that positive behavior as much as possible.

We have done all these tips from the day we brought our JRT home. But he doesn’t give any indication when he has to go out. He doesn’t bark or grunt or whine. How long does this usually take? We have had him almost 2 months. He is almost 6 months old and will be neutered in November. Will that help him to be more ready to not pee in the house!! I’d appreciate any other suggestions please & thank you!!

Immediately is the word of the day. in the beginning she went out the minute she woke up, after each meal, and at least once per hour, which eventually stretched out. We Never slept through night for first 6 mo. ON A LEASH, because off leash is exploration/ play time. But always her whole life After sleep, after meals. very few accidents, those were our fault. She had US very well trained!

Their bladders can weaken over time, like humans. Perhaps increase the amount of times you take them out. I take my 17yr old male out every 2 hours. Good luck.

Invest in one of those ball throwing sticks. I even have a Nerf gun that shoots tennis balls. Anything to keep from throwing your arm out because you will be doing a lot of throwing LOL
