Victorinox Spirit X for me all the way. Been carrying one (black oxide) daily for well over a decade. I love the refined feeling, and the blade is not a concern for me as I'm always carrying another folder. BTW, the Leatherman bits, though flat, will fit in a standard bit holder and you can even get them to work in the Vic ratchet. If you get the entire set with all the bits, then the Leatherman bit set is a great way to carry a large variety of bit sizes in a compact package.
I've got both. I use the charge more than the victorinox. The victorinox is too polished and I don't want to scratch it . And the blade on the charge is a beast.
That serrated utility blade is excellent in actual use. This is a utility tool set, and the knife fits in well. Long-term users usually have much better opinions of the blade configuration based on real world needs. Many oppose it as a reaction to being different, instead of objective testing. But, pick the model that suits-they have several. That blade shape was clearly presented in adverts and promos, so no one need not have known before purchase. Cheers!
Hi David. Thanks for watching and providing a much welcomed opinion. Since posting this video I've had an opportunity to carry a newer version of this tool with the same serrated blade and I agree that it is a great knife. I've had no issues and highly recommend it too.

I would. In my opinion, both Leatherman and Victorinox have stopped innovating. Victorinox does nothing but bring out new colours each year, and Leatherman is on the verge of receivership. All the new players in the market are trying new ideas - roxon, nextool, goat. But they are made in China 😔
Those where the first two multitools i owned. Gave them both away and bought a Swisstool X, wich i still own and bought a new one last year just because it is so damn good:)
Pay good attention which version swisstool you buy because (while closed they all look the same) some have plain blades, some have serrated blades, some have both blades, some have scissors, some dont have scissors, ... (I always buy the models with a plain blade and scissors) swisstool : havier duty than the spirit model (the small flathead is 2mm wide on this model compared to the 3mm wide flathead on the spirit (makes no sense)) swisstool spirit : small wire cutters (but does the job if you dont mind nibbling through cables) , lighter smaller construction than swisstool but can do the same tasks if nothing you do requires lots of force. leatherman free P4 (and P2): it has a smaller file than the swisstools but everything is one handed opening (you can fully manipulate it even with gloves on making it the best multitool for outdoors) (the magnets might bother you) and it has a plastic part, but other than that its probaly the best multitools leatherman offers. The leatherman surge, wave, and charge don't intrest me much (since you have to open them too much for the smaller tools) and the drivers are too short/thick to reach many things.
One thing that bugs me; I want me blade to be designed so that the edge is pointed away from the handle which means it has to be opened while the handles are closed ( does that make sense). If one has to open the handles to access the blade then the edge is pointed toward the handle and is harder to cut with!
I didn't like it at first either, but the butter knife blade has really grown on me after using it for a while. I don't miss a regular knife blade at all now :)
It’s called barbers razor blade or cleaver blade not butter blade. Of course both nicknames of the blade are not official by Victorinox. The thing is that even though it doesn’t have a pointed blade it’s very functional and very sharp. With the serrations towards the tip and the plain part at the back,it is very useful for witling wood or do detailed cutting easier. It’s really the opposite of other half serrated blades that have the serrations at the back. Also the slight curve makes rope cutting easier! If in any case someone doesn’t like the barber blade it also comes with a straight pen pointed blade like most saks BUT on the spirit it has a small curve. Personally I don’t mind because I always carry a dedicated folder 🙂
I have the Spirit and Charge+. You asked on preference. I am split. They tie as the top two multi tools overall for me. I swap between them. The Vic is a nicer more well thought out design with excellent functioning tools. Great ergos and use of space. It’s refined, thinner and stronger. I have never felt like I would break it twisting it. It tight tolerances remain and it just keeps working. I quite like the blade. That serrated blade is better than any Leatherman’s. I have found the point of struggle or failure to cut many times on several Leatherman’s serrated blades. Not the Spirit. It works so well. I quite like not having a plain blade on pliers. That’s what a knife is for. Additionally nearly all the tools are a class above Leatherman’s. The Wave feels like crap. Stiff, unrefined and many sharp spots and pinch points. The Charge+ fixes all that. Smooth pliers, smooth opening inside and outside tools. Smooth edges. No sharp spots when operating it like the back of the saw blade on the Wave. Never pinched my hand either. The functionality can’t be beat. It does nearly everything. Needle nose, large surface replaceable cutters, outstanding plain blade that I might like more than my dedicated knives, gut hook, two sized bit exchangers, diamond file etc. That 154cm blade is always supremely sharp and easy to keep it that way. I have modded the pry into a chisel and added Vic tweezers on-board. I use the ratchet driver with a bit sleeve. I also use T-Shank blades in the bit driver. I often carry a Vic Electrician with my Charge+ to give me the things it is missing. They are my favourites and both are a great choice. I appreciate a high quality feeling edc tool as much as high functionality.
Hi Reaper. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. You make some great points, but I cannot agree with you about the Wave comment though. I honestly can't feel the difference between a Wave+ and the Charge+ - other than the scales, most of the parts are interchangeable and come from the same parts bin. I, too, am split between these. When I have those days, I reach for my FREE P4 instead.
@@MultitoolsandBlades Pinch points, spines of blades and thumb holes not smoothed over, sharp edges all over the lower handles, stiff pliers, inner tools clump together, blades are stiff to open and edge on plain blade was poorly ground and sharpened on mine. All that was sorted on my Charge+. Night and day difference on my two.
For a comprehensive opinion like this, i can only disagree on the pinching part for the charge. It gave me some blood blisters on palm and thumb when using cutters, or on the occasion when the my grip slipped off (due to straight handles shape somewhat and definitely due to file/saw proximity to the knife blades in deployed pliers position)
I have both. The victorinox is a solid unit and way better build quality. However, the phillips driver is absolute garbage because it cams out of everything and the steel is soft and dints. The charge 2d bit driver bites way better and is a stronger steel. The charge is a better design due to one hand operation of main tools. I wish all multi tool companies made the wire cutters like on proper linesman pliers where they don't cross each other like scissors and bind.
I prefer the Charge and it’s tool set over the Spirit in every aspect except for the scissors, especially with a Rebar Awl in place of the large flathead.
It would be so great if Leatherman offered custom tool sets. They did toy with the idea when the FREE series came out, but it went against their warranty and logistics procedures.
And I love you for it! Thankyou! When I reach 1000 subscribers I will be giving away a brand new Leatherman FREE P4 to one lucky subscriber. More details of the competition coming soon.
No problem for you Carlo Cruz. Leatherman don't really go out of warranty except for extraordinary circumstances. Upgrade to the Wave+ next time you get a chance.

Both great quality tools, but the Victorinox serrated butter knife blade keeps me from purchasing this specific model. Great reviews!
