    Dear one- they are Metal. Every metal band has some great ballads. It’s more folkie than country. No twang. 😂

    Great video!! This is one of Metallicas best songs. Its one of my favorites. Just shows these guys can do just about anything musically. Sir Elton John says this is of the greatest songs ever written. That says all that's needed to be said. Elton is one of the greatest ever,you definitely need to check him out. Has a huge catalog of great songs.

    *One thing that sets Metallica apart from other Metal/Thrash bands is you can put on one song and be in full adrenaline mode, horns up, head bangin'. Then you can put on another song and rock your baby to sleep.*

    I applauded Metallica for doing this song. We knew theycould play loud & fast but this song showed a different side to their playing. I have found it's harder to play slower & quiter- if you hit a wrong chord there's no hiding it!!

    James Hetfield wrote 'Nothing else matters' as a love song to his then-girlfriend while he was on tour in 1989/'90... sitting in his hotel room w/ a guitar and being on the phone w/ his woman (this was before cell phones, so u could only call home when u had access to a pay phone or in a hotel) ... So, it was huge departure from Metallica's brand of metal. It became their 'pop' hit from their self-titled 'black' album in 1991...
    Metallica asked classical music composer Michael Kamen to add a orchestra to the song, so Kamen (who had worked w/ Queensryche, Pink Floyd and others) recorded an accompanying orchestra for the song - it became the background ambience. The single went #34 on the US charts.
    If the members of Metallica looked mad in the music video, it's because they were!😠 The recording sessions for that record in 1990 - '91 took a year... 1 million $$$ in costs... and James & Lars Ulrich (drums) were fighting in the studio constantly over the music and album's direction... and it caught the others in the infighting (bassist Jason Newsted, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and producer Bob Rock) ...By the time the record was finished, 3 members of Metallica were divorced... James was single again... So, Metallica went on tour in 1991 and did not come home until 1994, as the 'black' album sold 9 million copies on that run (16 million to date in the US)... It took Metallica away from thrash metal and they embraced a more 'heavy rock' sound in the 90's.

      And the issues with James, Lars (the biggest asshole in the universe), and Jason really blew up. Apparently, things have healed themselves over time and Jason has even talked about it on Metallica's channel, but it could have been handled differently.

      @@aricp9173 With Jason Newsted, it just came down to creative suppression... Newsted wrote songs and music for Flotsam & Jetsam, and he was only given credit for 3 songs in Metallica... He said he had so many ideas for the band's music, but they were all rejected. So, he built his own studio and started jamming w/ other musicians to make music... and James apparently refused to let him release anything (the Echobrain album being one).
      Jason said he had been abusing pills for chronic back pain and that didn't help... James was drinking heavily and the band was a mess in 2000. He had already decided in the Fall that he was leaving... but he stayed to finish his commitments to Metallica.
      Knowing that Metallica was in no shape to work together on new music, Jason suggested in early 2001 that the band take a year off.
      The band said, 'No.'
      Then, Jason said, "I'm stepping off..."
      And he was proven right... Metallica collapsed in 2001 and the album made by 2003 ('St. Anger') was a disaster.

      @@sumonjamal1653 Plus, Metallica never really allowed a lot of bass in their music on their albums. With Cliff it was different, but they seemed to have dialed back a lot of bass on their records from what I remember hearing. (It's been a long time since I've listened to them.) Live is different as they've really let Robert shine as he's a very dramatic a great bassist. (The story about Jason bringing in home made sandwiches to eat is funny.)

    • @sumonjamal1653
      @sumonjamal1653 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aricp9173 If u have heard Robert Trujillo play w/ Suicidal Tendencies or Infectious Grooves... u will realize that he has been "dialed back" in Metallica.
      U r right... they were never big on the bass, but Cliff would play the instrument almost like a 3rd guitar, so u had to find it in the mix...
      The 'black' album was very good w/ Newsted's bass... but yeah, we didn't hear much of him on other Metallica records in the 90's.

    • @aricp9173
      @aricp9173 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sumonjamal1653 Garage Inc. and the Black album where the only ones where the bass is really used to any kind of potential. It's really a shame that Jason and Robert are almost wasted potential to the band.

    I think the reason that this song didn't chart higher was that 70% of their fans were in high school and didn't so much buy things as copy each other's cassette tapes (yes, even after CDs existed). So 1 of us bought it and 40 of us had it. And played the whole album *constantly*. I say this as one of the few who did not have a pirated copy.. It didn't matter which friend/boyfriend's house I was going to, this album would play at some point during the night.)

    The acoustic guitar is a conversation with a close friend. The electric is more of a statement to a group or crowd. Theres no back and forth. It knows what it wants to say and is bothered by nothing else. Its all about intimacy with that flattop.

    They arent Thrash Metal, theyre Heavy Metal. Thrash is 100% high imtensity, all guns blazing all the time all instruments, with like 4 guitars, screaming and full hair flipping. Metallica is just Heavy Metal with 2 guitars, but very intricate guitars. They tell a story with their instruments, dark, light and in between. Thrash is as heavy and dark as possible all the time.

    Most of the radio stations here in the States wouldn't play Metallica back then, only on very few hard rock stations in some larger cities. We would call to request songs from rock stations, and they would always just say that they were not formatted for Metallica, whatever that means. Metallica didn't start getting any regular air time until the late 90s or so. But even then, it was just on the hard rock stations and only one or two songs. Even radio was political. If they didn't like it, they wouldn't play it. Us Gen-X'ers did have MTV back then, and they actually did play music instead of the trash they put on now.
