Why don't many of these fishing shows use a hole cover of some sort? Screw she sponsors if that's the reason! A piece of carpet or any kind of padding cut at least the size of the shape of the hole would prevent that rod from going down the hole! Also if fighting big fish like that, why wouldn't you leave the bail open so the fish could take out line once the flag goes up?
watch again, the bail is open. Hole covers are just one more hassle; if they can get away without using them they will. If he filled his spool to capacity, the line would have come off the spool just fine. Unless it froze somewhere,..

There's one reason right there. Another reason is it reduces light in the hole which in my experience in shallower water makes a difference.
