Mistake #8. Most of the worst offenders I see are TV and TH-cam personalities. I am glad you guys get em back in the water quickly. I was always told to not keep the fish out of the water for as long as you cold hold your breath.

Some really great tips wrapped up in here. I really never thought about the reel situation in that way, also thinking out loud here but bigger reels would be easier to use with gloves on as well.

job explaining these common mistakes. I loved the analogy, "fish follow weeds, troughs and pockets like deer follow a deer trail". I'm definitely going to pay more attention to my line. Your explanation of why it's best to fish 3 or 4 feet off the bottom was spot on! I've been noticing that I'm catching more fish doing this. I've even caught more than my buddies because I'm fishing higher in the water column. How do you spell that....Palomar Knot....Palemar Knot....Palmer....????

You guys are 100% correct on these, and yet people will continue to make these same mistakes. My favorite to tournament ice anglers that feel they constantly need to keep punching holes in 4 FOW, and wondering why the panfish are so spooky that day.
That's definitely a big one. Sometimes popping holes doesn't spook them, but oftentimes it does
I feel it isn't necessarily the hole popping, but the walking around from hole to hole. Between shadows changing on the surface, but also the noise of stepping on the ice/stone.
Definitely a valid point. That's especially true in shallow water or on early/late ice

I also scratch my head when people move a ton while fishing for active schools of perch and crappie! To me it makes sense to camp in high traffic areas, and let the fish come to you! If I’m not marking fish in 15-20 minutes. Then I make the move! Also great tip on using bigger reals! I’ll definitely use that in my Arsenal!
Settling down can definitely be optimal in some situations it seems. I'm a big fan of moving and finding fish, but sometimes it can be overkill

My Shimano 500 has amazing drag. One of the best. I have 35 years of fishing experience, and have fished every where from lakes in north America to the pacific ocean to the amazon.
There's some decent ones out there, but it's a rare find more often than not.
My favorite tip was the last one clean up after yourself. Thank you for including that tip. Good life lesson there.

On the cruising fish, I've seen trout do that in a quarry lake in my area while bank fishing in spring. I was fishing for panfish in one place for hours and I would see 3 or 4 trout in a school swim by from the same direction every 30 or 45 minutes.

I must say, you guys are good! Though I've dabbled in ice fishing for most of my life I'm getting into it more. We don't have some of the species that you are fishing, here in Alaska. The ice game in my area is for rainbows, arctic char, lake trout, and in some lakes, stocked land-locked salmon. Still, I feel like the tips you discussed will definitely apply here as well. I wonder if you could do a video on fishing without all the electronics? Those items probably won't be in my budget for a while. Thanks again for all the useful information. I'm a big uni-knot guy. double for line and leader. Single for everything else. But I used to lose a lot of fish tying clinch knots

the smaller spools aren't as bad if you have a 5.1:1 ratio with braided line at 1-2 lbs. good video guys!

Fishing too deep is my number one. Two reasons.
1. fish on the bottom are not usually currently feeding.
2. The way light works under water. The stuff below the feeding fish is dark, the bottom is dark and their backs are dark so the bait fish are invisible as is your bait. Because of this fish look up for shapes and colour against the light sky for their lunch.
Every lake and situation is different, but all things being equal, I'd always try and find them shallow first
Anglers have been passing line through the eye twice on a trilene knot or variation of back when braid/fireline etc was introduced.

Palmer Knot is all i have ever used for tying lures in from panfish to king salmon in lake Michigan the knot can't break or come undone it has to be a different spot in the line
Agreed. It's almost indestructible after you factor in your reel's drag and the bend of the rod.

I got rid of all those small reels , the line coils too much when they off spool . I have all summer reels now .
When fishing for pike , lake trout and pickerel I use stinger hooks while using live baits .

Hey guys about fishing in Shallow weeds that's cool about the downview how do you guys determine what depth of weeds or how high should the weeds be when you drill or do you just drill holes until you see what you see
Don't move too much and don't move too little. Genius.
I use braided line for ice fishing and I do catch Pike, Perch and Walleye on it. What are your thoughts on braided line for ice fishing? Problem with fishing with light mono for me is many of the lakes I fish in ND have all 3 species and a Pike will hit the same rig setup as a Walleye will hit but with a whole lot more force so I run a few reels with 8 or 10 lb braided line. I don't like loosing fish so if I'm fishing for Walleye, I'd still love to pull in a 8 lb Pike. BTW, I think another mistake fishermen make is not sharpening their hooks. I used to loose so many fish before I learned to properly sharpen my hooks.
Braid is totally fine as long as you have a fluorocarbon leader (especially if there is some level of visibility in the water). Sharpening hooks is another big one, I agree for sure

You can sit with as much equipment as you want. Echo sounder and camera and everything technical for ice fishing. My experience is that the fish only bite. When it wants to. But I don't know if ice fishing in the USA is different from Norway.

Tough to beat a rattle bait in dirty water and a Puppet Minnow/Jigging Rap in clear water for calling fish in.
@@NickLindner wow you are completely right I tried the repella jigging rap and it brought in perch and walleye even when they weren't biting I was very impressed
I tried the perch talker in 24 feet of water and all it did was stangle the hook up into the the top of the rattles did not work good
I've been considering a camera for Red Lake in my ice castle do you think it would scare the eyes considering the stained water? Which model would you suggest to hook into a T.V.
I wouldn't run a camera for walleye unless you're okay with catching less fish. If you do run one, I'd definitely do a high-end camera on a dirtier lake like Red Lake. Aqua-Vu HD or MarCum Pursuit HD

Agree with most of this but how do you tie a Palomar knot on a tiny tungsten jig? It's hard enough getting light line through the eye once, nevermind folded back on itself 😄 Great tips though 👍

you nailed it . pick up the garbage. I tell my kids the same way, me being a former BoyScout make the area cleaner than when you arrived. it does not hurt plus when the ice melts that crap is going to get into the water ways and potentially kill the fish (if they are able to eat it)

How do you deal with spools contracting in the cold, then having your line just spin on the spool. I tried using my open water reel once, but when I went to check drag, my line just spun on the spool cause the spool contracted in the cold.
I've never had that happen. I usually use tape when I'm putting line on my reel so it never spins like that.
In past experiences being one of them crazy guys with less then 1lbs test line iv seen 12 13inc bluegills follow up 2lbs test line and guys iv landed 4lb bass on quarter lbs test line it's all in drag

Another mistake would be using too short of a rod. I have used 28" and 36" rods and much prefer the longer one. More length to absorb headshakes and easier to fish when standing up.

Fair enough. In some situations it's absolutely optimal. I know guys who have one, but don't use them very often. Totally understandable if you think don't need one though. Not necessarily, but it's better sometimes. Use it if you've got it!

Using a camera is for people who do not know how to fish!
A spool only needs to hold 100 yards. Reel size has nothing to do with the reel itself! Your not taking the fish water sking!
Then again dragging a snow mobile and a home to assemble on the lake causes unnatural shadows.
XL line is the most important! ( Xtra Limp )
Motor mouthing and activity make the fish skiddish.
Now, i fish high mountain lakes and there's no bluegill, sunfish, or walleye! Just
Trout, salmon, ( kokanee ) and pike. Minnows are illegal!
High mountain lake are clear! There's no bottom feeders to cloud the waters!
If you need a camera to see that the fish has your lure maybe you need to learn how to fish.
Now a add on sensitivity tip ( wire ) can alert you a fish just swam by your bait! Plus the wire can allow your lure to twitch when set on the ice! I pull the line to jig not dancing the rod up and down.
Tip ups set by themselves. There is no movement or unnatural sounds to alert the fish.
Lure size has to be spot on. Not too big, not too small.
Now, the final mistake is listening to videos like these.
Keep in mind guys, if your doing videos on ice fishing you need to realize. Fisherman that ice fish are fisherman. Not just a novice.
So your video needs to address experience fisherman.
Last, you did not cover drilling the hole. Never drill where a hole has been drilled before.

Ive been using little kids fishing rods or a dock runner with my spinning reel for the ice. Using braid since it's more walleye resistant. Now I dont catch much of anything but I feel like I'm doing it ok. Looks like you have way too much gear to pack up and move so better just wait for the fish to come your way LOL. You sold me I'm getting a camera first instead of a flasher. Maybe if I get good at it I'll throw down for some fancier gear after that.
Yeah, we had way too much stuff to move this day LOL. Camera is amazing if you're fishing shallow/clear water. I don't even bring my flasher on bites like that.

I fish salmon predominantly with the improved clinch knot. The Palomar may have the advantage with tungsten baits. Knots are tools.

How do you remember what test line you used on your reels? I have several poles set up with various lines but I can never keep them straight, especially when I haven't used one for a while.
I personally don't swap reels so I pot a piece of white electric tape on my rod with a tag and put the #4 on one side and 20 for the year it is replaced on the other with permanent sharpie

Make sure you're taking advantage!
Back in the 60's we used spring bobbers and super tiny teardrops with sewing thread (clear) for bluegills. I think that thread was like 1/2 lb. Occasionally the line would break but this method worked great when the fish weren't biting with normal rigs. When they were feeding well we could use large teardrops and 6 lb line. It really didn't matter much.
Maybe you guys can help me with this scenario... Say I am fishing for perch... tiny tungsten jig. I get hammered and am fighting a fish I have yet to bring in but suspect these are pike... to my knowledge there are 40+inch pike here.... but a steel leader kills the action and bites drop in half at least.
If you want to catch perch, just keep doing what you're doing. Maybe upsize your line one or two pounds. If you want to catch pike, run 12-15 line fluoro

It depends on the fish your trying to catch and knowing what mistakes you make a long the way. My number one mistake is finding the fish and the Barometer determines when fish are going to eat or not. They might be more comfortable in shallow or deeper waters.If the fish are not biting it just might mean they are not comfortable to eat where you are and they look at your bait and then they move. Think like this in 100 feet of water there is more pressure your ears would pop. Maybe the fish might feel the Barometer changes and may put pressure on the fish to choose to bite or not.

You can certainly get away with it, but I think the optimal size for that application is probably in that 750 to 1000 range.
