      Köksal Öztürk The director just wants it different, and there was no said time in this movie, the narrator even said that in the start. So they mixed medieval and modern together to make it realistic and better. And nobody said that every movie has to be history related and you do know that robin hood is an english folklore with most stories having no basis in fact right? Having these futuristic clothes makes the movie better and having to wear old age costumes kind of makes it look bad and your saying that the sheriff is wearing these expensive clothing and robin having to wear tunics, well that’s because the sheriff has loads of money and just maybe likes to wear something of his type.

    Is it just me, or does Taron Egerton enjoy roles where he is being taught new skills by someone more experienced than him? Take a look at this: in Kingsman he is being trained how to be a spy by Merlin, in Eddie the Eagle how to be a ski jumper by Bronson and here how to be a thief...by Petit.

    To be honest this mix of time periods actually is pretty nice imo bc it immerses you in a mixture of fantasy and reality. The mix of time periods gives you those fantasy world vibes but the mention of historical events/actual places ties it to reality and in a certain way it matches Robin Hood because he actually existed, he is a real person, but his story is surrounded by legends so much that in a certain way, he has become a myth. His story sounds so much like a legend that ppl often forget he really existed. So yeah the mix between fantasy and reality in the setting matches the character so I found it a pretty good move on the producers part.

      Well to be fair the traditional story takes place during the crusades where lots of back and forth travel was happening, a criss cross of ideas, goods, and people. The black character is traditionally of moorish origin which was not uncommon. After all there is a black guy in Shakespeare. It would not of been impossible to see bands of crusaders returning with a few black and middle eastern christians who became compatriots. The movie is utter garbage but that's not something they added, the moorish character has been there for awhile

    On one hand, it's hard to complain about a modern take on Robin Hood - the legend has been altered numerous times to adapt to changing times, tastes, audiences etc. Much, if not most of what we take for granted as part of the story was introduced to it centuries after it originated. On the other hand, what's the point of taking a medieval legend and making it exactly like a modern day action heist film? I don't despise innovation, but if you change too much you might as well drop ther pretense of making a "Robin Hood" movie.

    • @sadlobster1
      @sadlobster1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      About the changing tastes you mentioned; exactly what is it about explosions, modern clothes in a medieval setting and ethnic actors playing non-ethnic roles that people love so much?
      When I look at The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, I love every minute of it. Despite being made from an "old school" film era, it FEELS like a Robin Hood story.
      When I look at John Boorman's movie, Excalibur; I have the same feeling. If people were able to make movies that connected well with PDC (public domain characters) back in the old days so well, why can't lightning strike twice here in our era?
      Do we really have to make Robin Hood into a dummy or Arthur into an "edgelord" to appeal to modern audiences? Because I question what those films had that the classics lacked?
      The classics had cohesive stories, iconic characters and the actors that played them, memorable musical scores and great action. Now...it's all about making things gritty by adding scenes in the nighttime, hard rock soundtracks and having these characters seem "realistic" (which doesn't make any sense)

      "Prince of Thieves" is the best. I saw that in the theater when I was 14 and they haven't made a better Robin Hood since. The Russell Crowe version is okay, but not as fun or suspenseful as "Prince of Thieves." There's too much slo - mo and sped - up action in it, which detracts from the suspense (I blame "The Matrix" for this and I really wish action movies would stop using it). Cate Blanchett's Marion may not be a damsel in distress, but I don't find her character as interesting as Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's, whose Marion had a history with Robin, which made the fight with the Sheriff all the more suspenseful. Oscar Isaac's Prince/King John acts like a spoiled child who disrespects his mother. I will admit that Mark Strong's character seemed more of a threat to Robin than Alan Rickman's Sherriff, but he's still not as interesting and he's not even the main villain, really. I showed "Prince of Thieves" to some friends a few years ago who had never seen it (they couldn't believe they hadn't seen it either). They loved it and said it was far better than the Russell Crowe version. Ask anyone these days which is their favorite Robin Hood. If it's not "Prince of Thieves," then it's probably the Errol Flynn version (which I haven't seen) or the Disney one. Either way, "Prince of Thieves" is a classic, which all subsequent versions have been, and will be, compared with. Oh, yeah, and the Sean Connery cameo as King Richard at the end. "Hold! I shpeak!" ha ha!

      It pleases me that Costner's Robin Hood is appreciated, since there was a lot of backlash against him and the film, but his accent (or lack thereof) is nothing compared to everything else the movie gets right.
      And because Prince of Thieves is my favorite film i'm going to give this film a chance too. Not every film about a historical figure (let alone a mythologized legend like Robin Hood) has to be historically accurate to be good. PoT took liberties with history, why can't this film? I'm really curious to watch it now.

    Some people complain over the setting. I personally like it. Sure it isn't a realistic depiction of the middle age (wasn't it meant to be post-apocalyptic or something, instead of actually medieval?), but then again does that prevent something from being a good setting? Perhaps I have watched too much anime, fantasy settings also generally don't reflect the true medieval period in anime. Oh well it looks good to me.

    • @rizon72
      @rizon72 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheShadowOfZama, not at all, but the problem here is the name Robin Hood gives people a certain image and time period. When you don't have that it drags the viewer out of the movie which is what you don't want. This would have worked had they actually billed it as some fantasy/modern/steampunk type of Robin Hood. That would have changed people's expectations giving it more leeway in costumes, races, backgrounds, etc.
      I truly believe had they not used Robin Hood and gone that route with marketing and such this would have been a much better received movie. Alas, the weight of Robin Hood sank this movie.

    • @TheShadowOfZama
      @TheShadowOfZama 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rizon72 Admittably if I were in their shoes I would have just made it an original movie. Not called it Robin Hood at all and just have fun with my setting. That said Hollywood can be an awful place. Perhaps they were forced to add Robin Hood to the film in order to secure funding? It might have been easier to secure the funding required if they could say it's based on Robin Hood, instead of saying 'This is something completely original.' I have heard plenty of examples where people would have been given a couple of millions extra dollars for their movie if they were to change certain scenes of an adaption.
      Mind you I have no proof of this, maybe this is fully on the director and such, but I know that when it comes to movie making, sometimes directors and writers can be put into tough spots by producers and others. Fantasy movies seem to suffer from this especially. I completely understand your point though and agree with it.
