The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. Allen Leech said in one interview that his character was supposed to be for Season 1 only but the creators liked him and his role they eventually decided to create a storyline for him.

I loved how Tom's character developed over the series, like it so wholesome. From being tolerated by the family to be actually loved and cared for even after Sybil's death.
Like he became the son Robert always wanted.
Tom has such a great character arc from the beginning of the series to the end of the second movie. One of my favorite characters from Downton Abbey!
And when the dowager remarked about Larry Grey.....in any other century he would have been called out and shot. No truer words have ever been said.

@@beccam4130True. Tom really grew into his own and became the family's stalwart. I was so happy when he teamed up with Henry to create a company doing something they both were passionate about, cars. He deserved it.

Love how he told Mary off! I finished watching all the series AGAIN the other day. And then watched the two movies AGAIN. I think my 6th time. I must be part of the family by now, or at least a kitchen maid. 🤣

She's the Dowager Countess of Grantham. But in the case of Dame Maggie Smith, she's the exception that proves the rule. 💜

Tom had the best character arc of the entire series!!! He became everyone in the family's favorite person - including each of Mary's men. And who can forget the scene with he checks Mary about betraying Edith! I play this one over and over!!!
@5:37, I love Maggie's expression here. She seems genuinely flattered that Tom as asked her to dance.
She has accepted him and is doing her best to help him feel comfortable. It took her a while, but she's a smart lady and Tom's goodness and abilities won her over.
I just didn't expect that from her. I expected resignation, not kind help. She is a good deal nicer than she lets on. @@bunnyslippers191

I love his relationship with Mary and Edith, especially Mary. They're like actual brother and sisters who truly care for one another and want each other to be happy.
Tom goes from burning an aristocrat’s house in Ireland to saving Downton Abbey from burning. That’s character growth.

More like character's assimilation. Not for nothing is this series a conservative fantasy with nice rich people taking care of their servants, class collaboration, etc. Obviously, as Fellowes is himself an aristocrat and member of the tory party.
This is not to say is a bad series, I enjoyed a lot. But I certainly knew what I was watching.

One thing I really wish the show went into was just how cruel the English were to the Irish people over the last few hundred years. To showcase exactly why Tom resented the idea of a monarchy and the peerage. England stripped us Irish of our rights, our land, our language and directly caused the starvation of millions of Irish people due to them taking all of the healthy crops and leaving us with nothing. The monarchy didn't bother their arses to try save any of us. Tom had every right to feel the way he did towards them although not all upper class people are bad. The show takes liberties for sure. Most lower class Irish people in the early to mid 1900s England would have not been served in shops, let alone marry anyone above their station and get away with it

I can't speak much about what you wrote but with respect to someone from the working classes marrying into the upper crust, I would say the war, much like death, is a great leveller. It in fact reduced many upper classes to way lower than they started. Downtown Abbey brings this up. Many rich aristocratic families incurred losses because of the war and had to trade palaces for something less. So at that point, they became accessible to people they wouldn't otherwise have been.

I'm a man as a man can be. But when Sybil came out with that blue outfit....I really did give a heartfelt smile when I saw that. She had such a giving heart. Her character.

There are so many Tom Branson moments that I love. Far too many to mention in a single comment. Thank Heaven DA you included one of them in this video. 7:55 When this episode aired I squealed with delight when he and Miss Sybiee walked through the door. I appreciate it because it gave the family and Mr and Mrs Carson a moment to celebrate the day in their own way. The family for Tom's homecoming and the Happy Couple on their wedding day. A day of double celebrations all around. 💕🥂

Two of my favorite Tom moments besides the Sybil one of course-When he was drugged and both Edith and esp. Mary defended him.When he himself defended baptizing miss Sybil,And the best was when he was crying and the leader of the female staff told him he was a member of the family now,don't let anyone try to belittle yourself.Powerful moments Leache tackled admirably.

Tom went from an actor to an amazing actor, as the years went on he moved into the role with precision ❤
Gotta love his character arc from the series to the movies and how most of the family went to detecting him to loving him till the ends of the earth like their own flesh and blood. Sybil was taken too soon but Lucy is a beautiful person too and she'll never try to be a replacement for her in his heart, The Crawleys nor Sybbie's.
EDIT: Gotta love how much of a darling Allen is too. Introducing Michelle to her late fiance and playing matchmaker before his untimely death!
1:30 That is one of my favorite scenes from the entire show as well as one of the best Tom scenes. Mary spends so much of the show ruining her own life or Edith’s. But everyone, her parents, her friends, the servants, they all treat her like some queen. Tom is one of the ONLY people on the show who truly knows Mary and calls her out on it. It’s such a nice breath of fresh air to have someone finally give Mary the straight up facts about how mean and selfish she can be. Tom and Mary have such an awesome relationship. They bug each other but they love each other and most of their fights are about not agreeing on good things.

I LOVED when he went after Mary, it was overdue, I think it played a huge part in her growth really. Mary had great traits but that nasty side of hers was horrible. Edith was not innocent either but grew up quicker
I all honesty, Mary was definitely wrong in telling Bertie about Marigold. But I have to say it was difficult to feel for Edith because she was going to trap Bertie into Marriage without telling him about Marigold. She agreed to Marry him without telling him.
@@lauraschoenborn3544 If I remember correctly Edith tried putting Bertie off and hadn't really said yes at that point. I really believe she would have told him.

Tom was my favorite of them all. I cried for joy when he came home with Sybbie to Downton.

The few things Mary and Edith came together on were Sybil's happiness and trying to help Tom find his footing in the family.
Finally a post on some of Tom's best.Ive been waiting.Tom,Thomas and Anna were three of my favorites.
I expected to see the scene where Tom told Matthew: ...you won't be happy with anyone else while Lady Mary walks the earth.
Tom's scenes (to me at least) had always been impactful 😊

my favorite scene with Tom is when he showed up at Carson's and Mrs. Hughes' wedding. The look on everyone's faces, (and I'm sure my own), when he showed up. It was SO awesome.

I loved tge scene where Maggie Smith says to Mrs. Cawley..thatwhen she went to the the south of France that she wrote to Tom to let them know where she went! That he's the only one withr scence in the family!!!

An incredibly human character that could only be made justice by a top-tier actor.
In all fairness, I do enjoy 4:10. Not so much the conversation between Lord Grantham and Branson, but the conversation Robert has with Carson afterwards. Noting how the previous chauffeur left to open a Tea shop 🫖. Of course Carson disdains the idea with every fiber of his being.
Tom is the unlikely hero of Downton Abbey. He started out as a fiery socialist revolutionary, then became a dignified, honorable gentleman who would lay down his life for the Grantham family. In a way, I think he's the reincarnation of Sybil, always holding the family accountable and being everyone's rock.
Make no mistake, he's still a socialist.
I would have like to see these clips in chronological order that would show the development of the Branson character.
Tom was my second favorite character from the show (minus Sybil) He has some ridiculously good character growth. I love watching his relationship with the Crawley family change over time. Especially with Mary. She starts off wanting to break him and Sybil up but then they become siblings practically. He spends a lot of his time trying to help Mary which sometimes makes her angry at him but in the long run he’s usually right. He starts off as this hot headed political guy and then he becomes this kind, funny, loyal guy to a family he originally didn’t like. His and Sybil’s relationship was so beautiful and I loved it. Best one on the show. Watching Tom lose Sybil and then have to figure out what to do with his life was so sad to watch. But Tom was such a good, awesome character. I loved him so much!

If there is a new series, I am hoping that Tom gets into politics. He has the position and property now. It would be great to see him fighting for Ireland and also supporting the English the upper class at the same time - a great source of conflict for his character. Actually, I had thought years ago when he exchanges a few words with the prime minster at Downton, that a story line for a political Tom was being prefaced, but nothing ever really happened.

Love Tom, love Sybil, and I know he adored her, but: she was TOTALLY not into him for the entire first part of their relationship. And even later... you get the vibe that she mostly just married him to shake up her life.
Yes I agree. Especially when Sybill replied to Tom asking her to runaway with him, "your my ticket to a different life", that makes me feel that she was bored with her aristocratic life and wanted out so Tom was the obvious solution.
Why did Tom have to ask Carson to lower the food? Was he injured or something?
Carson didn’t like serving Mr Branson because he didn’t agree him marrying into the family. Servants and masters shouldn’t mix. The food was higher than it was for everyone else.

while I liked small brief snippets of the series, I could not watch entire episodes. They remind me far too much of the base nature of the human character... the entitled in an era of privilege where the ordinary person was looked upon as far less than human... I have come across some of those people in my life...

I have such a hard time feeling sorry for Branson feeling so patronized at the family dinners when he chose that life. You never just marry your spouse do you? He was such a crybaby and manipulated Sybil. It was disgusting. For instance, when she said she was just trying to make things easier for him, he replied, easier for me or easier for you? It should have been for both of them as they are now married. Big baby. 🙄
He left her alone in Ireland too when she was pregnant so he could get away from trouble. Went straight to Downton without her. He got a right telling off. She was to follow him but travel by herself?? 😮
