- Dr. Dave demonstrates alternative options for the famous two-rail-kick Z shot executed by Efren "Bata" "The Magician" Reyes in one of the greatest matches of all time against Earl "The Pearl" Strickland.

NOTE - My table is the same size (regulation 9' table) as the Efren table, but my camera view was different which changes the perspective of things. I tried to match the ball layout a well as I could with the given camera angles and diamond lines. I might have been off a little, but not a lot. Regardless, I think all the options I presented were still available to Efren.

U cannot put the ball exactly d same as when efrens actual shot

Choosing the Z-shot just shows how confident he is with his skill. Most players wouldn't dare to attempt that shot on a tournament final match.

Not only is the shot super impressive, Efren did it in the finals of a prestigious tournament against Earl Strickland, who many consider to be one of the best pool players of all time. Not only that, he made the shot with only like a minute of planning.

I watched an old documentary before saying Efren doesn't have his own billiards table at home though he can easily afford to buy one. He just go to nearby billiard houses to play. I'm not sure if it's still true to this day.

The Z shot was the best option because the angle of the CB out of the second rail has a higher percentage of hitting the 5 ball and pocketing it. Compare the angle from the rail of your bending kick and the angle from the z shot.
I think Efren chose to play this because pool players prefer much easier angles in making shots.
That immortal z shot was made from 60% talent and 40% luck.
Good point. The shallow angle into the end rail is a definite advantage of the Z-Shot.
The z shot is the more natural and better way to hit that ball. Curving and bending is far riskier
Easy to assess that after the fact. In short, with the benefit of hindsight.
Those numbers need adjustment. It was 100% skill hitting the ball. Making it was probably 60/40.

In terms of the GOAT conversation, Boxing is torn between Ali/Tyson. Basketball is torn between Jordan/LBJ. In Pool/Billiards, majority of the people would agree Efren Reyes is the GOAT.
Have you ever been in a competitive game? What happens is you default to your basic instinct when in trouble. That means the actions you are used to when the going gets tough. Akin to muscle memory. Well, that's why he's been called the Greatest. Because, you can visibly when he gets into the zone.
I think it’s important to note that the balls , the age of the cloth, as well as the air condition are important factors to consider. They were different and not as advanced as right now
Good points. The cloth type and conditions definitely affect the action of some of these shots.
Players from the philippines is use to different conditions as they travel around the country Playing on different crowds, tables, weather etc… , so they know how to play on each table.
In the USA most pool tables are in good conditions with aircons and inside malls , pool halls and sporst bars, in the philippines most pool tables is in the streets so the table conditions vary.

If you had played the commentary preceding the Z-shot we would have heard that it is impossible to make the shot. Eight times they said Efren was in “trouble”; much to their delight. Efren gets the last laugh. Earl’s recognition of Reyes making the shot was awesome.

In my younger age I was once a billiard addict and very obsessed with cushion angles. I had made amazing cushion shots in pressured games as if it was really calculated. All I can say is the passion of Efren to this game is beyond comparable.
He is truely a living Legend!

The bending kick is awesome and seems quite less complicated compared to Efren's Z shot. This video is great in demonstrating several options other than Z shot. Also educational for novice player and a pool fan like me.. 🙂

Noticed how the cue ball dribbles when he is doing cushion shots. A technique where you can easily manipulate the cue ball to the angle that you want. Reason he chose the Z shot.
I think Efren is doing it in purpose sometimes. There may be easy/obvious shots available but he’ll do complicated shots. Sometimes, the most remembered players is not the player who won but the player who did a complicated/impossible shot.
Bingo! Noob people don't understand that. You need to be remarkable to stand out from the rest. Taking easy shots can make you win but easily forgotten.
Considering the nature of their game that time and they are both on the hill, therefore, the z-shot was the option. I believe that there are other options (it might include all your options in this video) that he was thinking. But take note he sees all the angles that other players cannot see.

I'd wager Efren's the favorite to hit that ball using the Z shot. I've seen him shoot that shot a couple other times and he's crazy accurate with it.
I would agree with you when the Z-shot is at a natural angle; but due to the positions of the 6 and 7, significant sidespin was required to make the shot work. That makes it much tougher than normal. That's probably one of the reasons why he thought about the shot so long.
100 % true saw him do it at least 4 times that was pocketed in different angle but same 2 cushion bank,. He is more daring during money games so you will see him doing it
Yeah Ive seen him do it in diff tournaments.. he knows every bit kind of Z shots from small to large angled z shots..

Please check your Ball positions and placing. The ones in Efren's Tournament is tighter and closer. From the original position, the Cue Ball is 2 Balls length and the 6 is 3 Balls length from the Rail. Your Cue ball is 3-4 balls length from the rail. With the tightness of the balls, the bending kick was not an option and Efren opt for the Z shot. Good video though.
My ball positions might not have been perfect, but I think all the options I presented were available to Efren. Did you see how much clearance there was between the CB and the obstacle balls on my bending kick shot?

What you're not taking itno account is Efren's background and experience. It was the best option for Efren because his background was playing "karambola" or carom ball. He was also a master of that game and using 3 banks/rails was pretty normal in that game. It was the "easiest" and most comfortable for him to take such a shot with his experience.
And unnatural Z-shot like this is low-percentage, even for the great Efren. Efren admitted that the shot is about 1 in 20, even for a top player. See:

@@DrDaveBilliards It's definitely a high risk shot but if you've been playing 3 banks all your life it's more natural to try a shot like that. Why would he take it if he knew he didn't have a chance? That's all he needed, a chance, which he's done all his life.
@@pkpnyt4711 He took the shot, because after thinking about all the options over a long period of time (much longer than he normally ponders a shot), he decided it was his best of the worst options in that situation based on how he felt in that moment. He was right! He GOaT lucky! :)

Eferen sees shots that mere mortal professional players don't..That's why he is the GOAT..Being able to execute it is a very tough thing to do..But even just being able to think that that shot exists as an option is already an amazing feat in itself.

I think the z shot gives the best angle to go for broke on that shot. The rails and the cloth could be huge factors. I've played on tables where that z shot wouldn't work with bad rails. In that case, I'd opt for dave's preferred method. If I don't know the table well enough though, I'd try the z shot every time.
If the Z shot were more natural, I think I might agree. But with Efren's ball layout, it wasn't natural. He had to use left spin into the 1st rail to make it work. This increases the difficulty level dramatically. Very small changes in aim, speed, and spin drastically change the shot outcome.
Velly Interesting. I gotta believe all Efren's three cushion experience figured heavily into his choice, and his execution.
That’s not a common 3-cushion-billiards shot, but Efren is no doubt the kicking master of the world.
Casual players needs to understand. Efren played carom, 3 cushion back in the 70s . He have a great understanding of bank/kicking, rotation and speed control. And when $ is on the line he becomes and transform to a Wizard… he had a lot of 2 rail bank/kick/z shot in his career exhibition or championship play.

Take in mind that efren shot a great safety, but he potted the 8 and that's how he got in this situation. Earl was thanking God for this.
Being hill hill he didn't want to give the table back to earl. Also the slim opportunity of shooting a good safety he choose to go for it. And boy did he go for it...even earl was in awe after the z shot. He showed his respect by congratulating Efren before he could shoot the 9.
Absolute one of the most enjoyable games of pool, brilliant game from both titans.
Efren is unique in his approach of the game, so his z shot was the best option for he made the shot in 1 try

Any choice is good as long as you pocket the ball!! Your choice is entirely different from Efren's because he has a distinct vision from you.
Agreed. Efren made the right choice because he pocketed the ball and won the match. He was very lucky; but the better you are, the luckier you get.
He did it with just 1 attempt and not to mention tremendous pressure. How many times you tried those shots before getting it right? That’s why it’s the best shot.
I report the number of attempts required for each option in the video. Agreed ... making a low-percentage shot like this on the first try is quite impressive. That, along with the drama surrounding the shot, is why it is at the top of the list in my "Top 25 BEST POOL SHOTS of All Time" video:

Efren did this in the crucial moment of the shot. That is clutch and just talent.

The Z shot made more sense to him and the cue ball speed is the only variable he needed to control. Efren made an educated guess coupled with years of experience playing professional pool and with a bit of luck, touched let alone pocketing the ball, is the world-renowned result.
It was certainly an awesome shot (one of the best ever), but it required much more than speed control. It required precise angle control and spin control and a good feel for the cushions and cloth. Set up the shot and try it until you make it so you can see how difficult it really is. Even Efren admitted that the shot is about 1 in 20, even for a top player. See:

My guess is he was thinking if I let Earl back to the table I might as well unscrew my cue..
He did get lucky the 5 ball made it to the hole, after the cue ball lost so much energy off the second rail.. THATS the truly shocking part about that shot..
For all I can remember Efren played Carom billiards back in the day I believe it was in Japan tournament were held that is why his cushion and angle shot is his comfort zone of play.

I play too..and this is just my opinion.i noticed that filipino players in general doesn't like to use masse,bends etc unless really necessary. They rarely even use the jump cue.i mean how many times have you seen efren use the jump cue?.i think efren chose the z shot cause it was the most comfortable for him and with the best chance of pocketing the ball (for him).lol.

Well said.. Me as an average filipino player of the game, we have the culture to look for the rails rather than jumpshots or masse. Because here in the Philippines jumping the CB is prohibited in almost all the pool halls. Like dr.Dave said it will abused the cloth..
I saw Efren's several games using jump shot. There's one video I watched from a tournament.
@DrDaveBilliards - have you tried a Monte Carlo simulation of all the options you can think of? That might give us a clue as to what the actual probabilities are and what is the best overall choice would be for most players.
I found an article titled “Toward a Competitive Pool Playing Robot: Is Computational Intelligence Needed to Play Robotic Pool?” from 2007 that indicates people have been looking at Monte Carlo simulations for pool for quite some time, but I’ve been having problems trying to find more recent articles or papers that reference more modern software that could be used to analyze shots like this.
I agree. That would be an interesting analysis with interesting results. However, the missing piece is the difficulty of judging and aiming the shot. This isn't measured in a physics simulation. Some shots are fairly easy to judge and aim, but very difficult to execute accurately. Some shots are very difficult to judge and aim, but fairly easy to execute once you are close to the right line and spin (and speed for some shots). The Z shot is difficult on both accounts.

I enjoyed your video and generally agree with your conclusion. But like some others have mentioned, Efren prefers rail kicks and banks over masse/bending if possible, not that he can't do both. So in that way and considering his skill level to execute on his choices the answer to the exact question being asked is yes - his Z shot was the best option for him. That said, your bending kick is what I would try with enough practice.

I'm Filipino, have been big fan of the man for decades, and have even been in the same room as him a couple of times (but too intimidated to go up to him and ask for a picture or autograph) but even he will tell you he couldn't make that shot every time. There's nothing disrespectful in recognizing that.
And if you celebrate him because of the his skin color and of those he won against, you celebrate something he never did. And it's more disrespectful to Efren to choose to focus on that.

You made valid points but forgot one thing. The very thing that sets the great from the normal people are their willingness to take bigger risk for bigger rewards. He must've been doing all the time during regular plays and had the guts to do it in a real match with pressure and the risk of losing it. He did it anyway. You see it in every sport, Boxing, MMA, Basketball etc. He had balls to try something like that on a high risk, high pressure environment is what sets them apart.

Whenever you're kicking, there's a slight chance the ball would go in. But if you're really really good with kicking balls like efren, your chance of making the ball increases drastically.

Your demonstrations justify the reason why Efren didn't opt to choose those alternatives. Also, we have to consider the biggest factor - Efren is in a pressured-pack match. Efren acted according to his skills and intuition. No one can do that better than the players themselves at a given situation - hit or missed. The fact that Efren call and made the shot means he made the right decision. Trust me, all the alternatives you've just shown crossed Efren's mind. But he considered them inappropriate. To question his decision that led to the famous Z Shot is folly.
You can't argue with success. Efren most definitely made the right decision for him at that moment. Watch the last section of my video again.

You can beat Efren if you remove the cusion...In the Philippines, we play 15balls(straight balls) instead of 9 or 10 balls...that is how Efren learned every part of the cusion. You can't hide the ball to him..100 percent he can hit it but not shoot it. 1%luck, 99% skill
