Trying to recreate the famous Efren Reyes 'Z-Shot' | Your Average Pool Player

  • Efren Reyes had some incredible shots in his career, but no shot would be quite as tense and unbelievable as the 1995 Z-Shot. Undoubtedly the most famous of professional pool shots, when Efren stepped to the table there wasn't a single person who genuinely thought he was going to make the ball. Sure enough, the Magician produced an incredible trick and dropped the 5 into the corner.
23 years later, Your Average Pool Player Rollie Williams attempts to recreate the Z shot while documenting his progress. The going was slow, but eventually it became clear that there were 3 major variables to optimize for: Spin, Speed, and Rail Contact Point. It's one of the most difficult shots to hit. Try setting it up at your house and giving it a shot.
The track used in the video is 'Rest' by Otis McDonald: • Rest - Otis McDonald |...

Actually, Efren said " All these shots are all mastered in years, the only shot I can't do is how to avoid the interviews by those foreign sports writers and reporters who keep asking and talking to me in English.

You are crazy underestimating Efren here. He definitely knows far more about the game than anyone of us mortals. No two shots are ever exactly the same, even the weather of the day makes a difference. In order to pull off what Efren does on a regular basis, he had to understand every minute detail in every shot.
It’s incredibly patronizing to think that he could dominate multiple disciplines in pool globally for decades without actually understanding how it works down to the deepest levels. I guarantee you he understood the game in all its aspects, and he understands it on a deeper level than all of his world-class peers, let alone nobodies on the internet.

By the way Efren just made a farewell tour. So the legend is about to leave the circuit. He will be missed. But there is a bigger issue here. His mind. We will never know how his mind works to make these shots. Efren is not that articulatea And his English (language) is not that good.

Pool God. That’s what efren is 😍 I’m just upset that he’s retiring. Shout out to all that loves efren Reyes and his talent. Pool will never be the same again... 😭

You forgot the hardest part at the end when explaining how hard the shot is...actually seeing the path looks the most difficult to me...you had a perfect rolemodel, he saw the path, new where to hit on the rail, knew how hard he needed to play & according to that how much spin he had to use! Now THAT’s impressive!

Hey man so far I’ve really liked every video you’ve done. If you could just put a little more detail on where you’re hitting the ball . I’d like to re-create some of the shots for myself without having to go through the learning curve :)

Or you could just practice the shot yourself.

Matt Mrock I do plan on practicing the shot myself that’s why it specifically says in the comments. I’d like to re-create the shot for myself, the point of the comment was to ask for more detail that is all.

But that’s the whole thing you’ll never learn if you have a guide on how to do it. You just gotta get on a table and figure it out for yourself tbh

I think he explains it very well. You know the 3 factors that is needed to get it right and he tells us what went wrong after each miss. How can you say you need more detail? Just set it up and have this video on your phone and start practicing mate!
