    I had this Z shot come up in a match I had 2 weeks ago, but the cue ball was only about a diamond past the side pocket. The object ball was in nearly the same position. I actually declared that I was going to do "Efren's Z-shot" and I made it! I have never made that shot before in my life, and this time I actually made it during a match after declaring I would! One of my proudest moments in pool.

    After watching this, I think he made the first one on purpose, because it is the only way for him to showcase his amazing skills, while staying humble. How else will he be able to play that 2nd shot, without looking like a showboat? It is like chess. He set the entire 2 shot sequence up, all the while making everyone believe it was an accident, giving himself an opportunity to pull off an amazing shot. The type of skill needed to pull off the 2nd shot, reveals that him sinking the 1st shot on purpose, is very likely.

    I don't think Efren can repeat that shot and get it in from the first attempt. He's very good and no one is arguing that but there was definitely an element of luck there as well. You did well too.
    Question: why didn't you put an upper left spin mid upper) instead of middle (or mid low) left spin? This way you can hit the ball with less force which increases the initial angle it bounce back at.

    • @kvn1936

      I think this shot should be hit a tip above middle left. It should cause the ball to turn over to the left and when it hits the 2nd rail it kills the spin and straightens out. It's hard to explain cue english and spin without showing you lol.

      I don't normally reply to comments as I believe every one has their opinion which I respect. I can see where you are coming from and in any situation, there is an element of luck. Being such a humble man and as a filipino trait, its something he would say but let me ask you this: Every time Efren is interviewed he would say he is lucky. How many shots has he done that were as spectacular, unbelievable and outlandish as that one, all during competitions where he embarrassed so many analysts who didn't see the shot coming? There was a video where he walked into a gathering and he still had a satchel over his shoulder and eating a sandwich. Someone had just snookered the ball and people asked him to take it. Efren obliged using the guy's cue and still with the satchel on his shoulder and a sandwich wrapper crumpled up on his shooting hand, he took a two bank shot and made it. Its on TH-cam. Another lucky shot? maybe? All I am saying is he wont attempt it if he cant make it. If you watch him long enough, you know he sees the shot at a different level from anyone and once he does see it, he knows he can make it.

    • @Grejegando
      @Grejegando ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaymorales3078 That's called confirmation bias what you're doing here. I've seen the video you're talking about and it was a nice shot he executed there but I have also seen other shots he took in other videos and executed poorly. Your brain will just ignore or delete such shots because it wants to believe one thing over the other or to confirm a preexisting belief you have about Efren. Yes, he's a great player and I'll never argue that but he's also a human with limitations just like the rest of us. This shot here was a fantastic shot but IMO he'd fail 9 times out of 10 if he attempted repeating it.

    The player’s talent can’t be the only factor at play in a move involving two bands, there’s always a part of randomness... I mean, even when playing on a high quality table, the bands rejection angle accuracy is less good than the rejection you can get from another ball. This accuracy decline is usually low enough so that a decent player can still use a band and get what he wants to do, but when using 2 bands in a row, the margin of errors of the 2 bands add up and shots predictibility then drops, especially given the fact that the rejection angle also depends on the white ball’s incoming speed, and that this relationship is non-linear...

      Not trying to compare myself to efren or anything because he’s obviously much much better than me, but I made a shot similar to this one at league in 8 ball (on the 8 ball). I had to shoot mine with inside English, so I think that actually helped since the angle after the kick was straighter making the cut more consistent, but it was still very cool. I think when you’re playing under pressure you can just get into a kind of zen mode and make shots like those that you’ve never practiced first try. It’s crazy.

    • @paddyotoole2058
      @paddyotoole2058 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@riclu6369 disagree. Doing the 2 cushion ‘Z’ shot across the table and back was the only way to make contact. The other 1 cushion alternatives were the bottom cushion, but being right handed that is too much of a stretch for him to cue properly and he would have needed a rest. Or the right side cushion, but the angle was such that the green ball was blocking that shot to hit the right side cushion in the correct place, even with side. And the black was blocking the one cushion escape off the left side cushion.

    The fact that this happened live in a tournament and the sportsmanship that emanated from this situation is heartwarming.
    Teach your kids competition, but respect and sportsmanship always prevail because it will always go both ways

    Not just the shot difficulty, but the pressure and environment he did it in. Imagine making a freethrow shot in your backyard vs a freethrow in a championship game 7 for the win.

      I get what your saying but what efren did is still at 50x harder than a free throw regardless of the circumstances.
      Any decent basketball player practices freethrows at least thousands of times up to that point, but how many times do you think Reyes got to practice this exactscenario before this shot?

  • @LyonPercival

    Man this video really puts in perspective the difficulty of that shot. Yes- if efren missed no one would've blamed him (like going for a game winner when the game is tied vs being down cause the game goes on)
    But damn he made it and won in that moment.

    Let's just talk about Efren's shot and how he did it at the spur of the moment with so much pressure and the title on the line. It was just as iconic as Jordan's last shot. Even the reaction of Strickland who finally realized that Efren was the GOAT and let sportsmanship get the better of his monster ego and arrogance was a shock and he would probably never do it for anyone else. Because let's face it, any shot can be replicated given enough time and analysis.

    For you to make that shot in 14 attempts is impressive. I thought you would take somewhere between 50 and 100 tries. I can see how skillful you are after you made the shot by clearing the table.

      There’s doubt.. He’s the best all around player of his time, but he was barely top 5 playing 9-ball.. Nick, Buddy, Earl, Sigel and Johnny all played better 9-ball.. 9-ball is flawed, though..
      I think he has a great argument, but I give it to Greenleaf, who was truly unbeatable.. Even Mosconi couldn’t beat him..
