Taking the Train in Spain for Beginners - RENFE

  • Since the trains in America are not a common form of travel, I thought I would make this video to help out. This video is everything I wish someone would have told me before I took the train in Spain.
    Here are a few links that I mention to help out.
    Bon Voyage!!
    RENFE - www.renfe.com/...
    Yellow Bus - www.esmadrid.c... (This might have a lot of pop-ups even though it is the tourism page for Spain). When you land, if you ask any information desk at the airport, they can direct you.

    One of my favorite Spain travel stories: I took the bus from Madrid to Malaga and they showed the movie SPEED on the bus, lol! I also remember taking the AVE train from Madrid to Sevilla and it was SO NICE! This was 20 years ago, I hope it's still as good as it was back then.

      Yeah. I wish I’d taken more images for the video. It was very nice inside the train. The bus to Malaga is also still popular. They might be showing the fast and furious serious though now 🤣😂🤣

    These days, I would recommend getting your ticket a month out if traveling to a major city.
    Train vs. plane? I choose train every time! Free parking, easier security and boarding, and ending your journey in the center of the city are all major pluses.
    Driving in Spain is easy. It's the parking that is the problem. Take the train and grab a taxi. They are cheap.

    This was very helpful, @Mayling. Thanks. I plan to go to Almansa so I fly into Madrid and I'm told I can take a high speed train from Madrid to Albacete, Spain and then either take another train or rent a car to drive to Almansa. Do you have any recommendations? Also, how affordable is Uber in Spain?

    • @WhereisMayLing
      @WhereisMayLing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Uber is cheaper in Spain than in the US. I don't know this location. If it's downtown, you might want to check the roads. It's not a tough situation to drive though and car rental is fairly close by all the train stops.
      I found the streets to be not straight forward to navigate in downtown areas as there is a lot of one way and narrow streets in some cities. If you're not on a tight budget and you don't find that sort of thing an adventure, I'd just as soon use either Uber or the local version Cabify.
      Either way i think you'll have great stories and memories! Happy travels. I'm so thrilled it was helpful.

      My Fair Lady is a massive misrepresentation of and insult to the science of linguistics, though. Saying that linguists are people who want to exterminate dialects they don’t like and polish up dialects they do like is like saying that biologists are people who want to exterminate species they don’t like and use eugenic breeding g to “improve” species they do like.

    • @WhereisMayLing
      @WhereisMayLing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No fee unless your luggage requires some sort of extra special handling. You will need to be able to handle it yourself if you're young and able.
      If you're a Senior or require special assistance, give yourself some time to find help at the front desk. I noticed many older people and those in wheelchairs finding assistance from an attendant at the train station. Have an amazing Trip. Hope this helps.

    You can show your lack of knowledge publicly if you want. The Spanish motorway (highway) network is the third largest in the world, by length. As of 2019, there are 17,228 km (10,705 mi) of High Capacity Roads[

    • @WhereisMayLing

      Not sure how my video suggested otherwise. Mostly all my videos suggest that the train is easy to use and a better choice if you aren't familiar with driving on the SMALL roads of individual cities. But if you want to just ride on the highway, believe you can somehow drive faster than the trains go, and park outside of those areas, sure thing.

      I would def try to book in advance for any train. If by regional you mean within Spain, def yes. They book out. Seats are all assigned. I think I’m the past, you could just show up and get a ticket, but it’s not a great idea these days. Happy travels!!

    • @WhereisMayLing
      @WhereisMayLing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will need to have your hotel location in order to fill out their online form. The address is what is needed not proof of booking. It can just be the location of arrival. Checking is still somewhat limited, so you should be ok.

    • @WhereisMayLing
      @WhereisMayLing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it’s assigned seating there isn’t a perfect time. Because of the economy nearly al the seats book out. It would be rare you were on a train with an empty seat. There would never be people standing. That said this was during high summer season. In general, the month of august is a big touristic month.

  • @r.hulsewe8353

    “If you’re from the States like me, the train is not the best option for getting around” is a surprisingly sweeping condemnation of American passenger rail service to come from a person whose hometown is, as you’ve stated elsewhere, New York City, which lies at the center of one of the more densely passenger-rail-served regions of the world, and which is served by numerous trains of national importance as well. Did your parents give you a heavily auto-and-air-centric upbringing in the outer reaches of Brooklyn or something like that? I think a more judicious statement would’ve been something like “the train is often not the best option” or (if you wanted to be more charitable) “not necessarily the best option”.

      The metro is a subway. Technically a train, but really not quite the same. Ig this was a video on Getting Around Madrid, the might be a decent comp, but last time I checked, you're nowhere near the distance of Madrid to Seville, Granada, or anything like that.
      Hope that clarifies.
