Will you be making part 2 this tutorial was so helpful and I was doing the same thing in highschool and it helped me a lot thanks so much for the tutorial ☺
I know. I'm sorry that it takes so long for this book to be translated. It's out of my hand now but I planed to do some more videos like this one to help you guys to wait. And those information come from the book and it's very important stuff to have a good start.
The majority of the time I draw cartoons/ semi cartoony characters so for me I don't always have to sketch in pencil first- of course if you are drawing realism ( which requires absolute anatomical accuracy) then use a pencil first but if you feel confident it can be good to draw straight away in pen- it reminds you that every mark counts and to not always be focussed on making sketches perfect by relying on an eraser!
As very basic novice in drawing. i did find it helpful. Once the concept had been shown to me, i did ask myself ''why had i not thought of that''. Saving time and moving forward to accept and learn from other people.
hi! i'm a beginner at drawing and i would like to focus with ballpoint since it's creative but most affordable. i really like the tip you gave with the quadrant since i am just a self taught artist. yeah, i'm cheap but i really want to draw!! so please please give us more tips, thanks
Allan, I'm trying to learn ballpoint pen drawing and love this video about hashing techniques to start out. I looked for other tutorial videos on your channel and didn't see any though, just (beautiful) examples of your work. Can you make more tutorial videos please?!
yesplease Sorry my friend. I'm a full time dad with 2 little boys now and the only one or two hours of my evening are spent drawing commission. I guess, I will start again when those 2 squirrels will be at school during my day :)
Thanks. I have a ballpoint pen art forum where you can have tips and guidance. (I can't put any link in here) The book in his English form is still in translation state but it's on it's way.
This is amazing ... I have learned and understood alot ... I cant thank u enough ... will practice right away and already cant wait for the next chapter
Awesome!. More Video's. I love drawing with pen's since high school and have been here lately trying to get better at it like what I see with you video's here. Keep them up.... =)
This is amazing and something i would love to use as a medium. Do you plan on making any more tutorials? or can you point me in the direction of where i can learn how to use ballpoint pens? books? dvds? Have a great day! This is so kind of you, sharing such a great "how-to"
Allan Barbeau I love when the maker of the video answers one of my comments. I just wondered if you would make the next one because your last upload is seven months old. Not to tell you to hurry up. It's after all your business.
you need a bit of thickness, otherwise, the paper is gonna deform with the pressure. And you need the paper as white as you can. Cause your light is coming from the whiteness of the paper. Brighter is the paper , brighter will be your light. From that point, what brand is up to you :)
Hello Allan, I have a question for you: when drawing hair do you leave empty spaces or use a white ink pen? And if so, what kind of pen you prefer? I tried many, many gel pens but as soon as the ink dries out it becomes bluish, very annoying, I just can't get a solid white line over black ink! I even tried gouache, nothing to do, same result. Scratching the black ink? Tried, not possible. Please give me some tips! Thanks a lot for your time and wonderful videos!
Hello !! You need to work with negative space. Don't draw the hair ... draw the dark between them :) Everything light come from the white of your paper. Now, I got some results with white gel pens or even a white Posca but the best result is negative space like I did for my Jack Sparrow portrait.
Thank you so much for replying! I guess the difficulty of the ballpoint pen technique is what makes it more interesting and amazing. Negative space it is, then! :)
You can do the 4 quarters exercice of this video but insted of doing two V1 of the same colour one on top of itch other, do two diferent colours V1 like a light blue and a pink. You'll get a kind of grey
I feel Bic pens are the best i've used so far. I found the likes of Staedtler and Paper Mate a bit stiff to use .. you have to add quite a bit of pressure to get them to flow, unlike Bic. I tried getting a nicer pen (Lamy) and it seized up on me after about 4-5 hours use. I got a refill cartridge ... several of them, and the same thing happened. I've not tried Reynolds pens yet
I'm new to ball point drawing, used to graphite and would like to try draw with new mediums, just wondering how you draw smooth or precise lines with ballpoint? With graphite if your hand move too much you can go over a line multiple times to make it smooth and natural, this is easy to do since you can erase it to make it even more smooth, but with ball point this is not possible, so how do you it? Just the fact that it's un erasable is very off-putting and scary for beginners, this will probably make my hand even more un-steady.
Hey Su Yan. Happy to know you want to give it a go :) You need to prepare your drawing as much as you can with the pencil so you know exactly where to go when time come to ink it with the pen. You can do smooth lines if you don't press too hard on your ballpoint pen (same way you use your graphite). Don't use inkjoy or gel pen for example as they are too fluid. But a pen as simple as a BIC is great to start.
As for been precise, if you use a fine ballpoint pen, you can do pretty precise stuff. And don't forget, bigger the drawing is and more precise you can be :)
I remembered I start using blue ballpoint pen to draw mickey mouse when I was young. The pen is not just cheap and easy to get anywhere but is also the feeling of artistic style, similar to pencil drawing.
I'm starting to draw with pen instead of pencil, but it seems I need to draw slower, or the pen doesn't write. Anyway, I'm used to draw fast and I'm not very precise, so, maybe this will improve my precision aswell...
what does it mean by control the pressure? does it mean control the weigh of the pen like holding it more lightly? why i cant get the lightest colour? T-T
Yes, !! if you want a light tone, don't press on the pen, just use the weigh of it. Stronger the colour, greater will be the weigh of your finger . Is that clear ?
+박세진 , I don't know those Lamy ballpoint pens but what I know is that every single ballpoint pen is good for something. Ether they are almost dead and so, very good for shading. Or they have very strong colour like the Inkjoy and so, very good for contrast when you get at the strongest colours of your drawing.
Thank you for sharing your experience! ♥ :) Your drawings are really beautiful, it had to be hard to learn all these things, but you managed it and you're doing great! I must add sth, I just don't understand these guys writing you to speed up like you have no other life than just shooting your techniques and posting it on youtube...so rude and ungrateful!... That's all, live, be happy and don't let that stupid comments take you down! :D :)
this is probably the only and best tutorial there is about ballpoint ink pens,
Will you be making part 2 this tutorial was so helpful and I was doing the same thing in highschool and it helped me a lot
thanks so much for the tutorial
☺
Please put up part 2 when you get the time :) This is so helpful

Allan Barbeau - I hear ya on the whole "time" thing! Don't worry about rushing it- we'll still be here when you can get to it!
You are amazing! Love your sketches! I recently started my TH-cam drawing channel ✨Your video helps me to improve as I also draw with a ballpoint pen!
I don't start with a pencil and try to avoid using pencil because am a perfectionist. I sketch my pen from beginning to end with a ballpoint pen ✍🏾
Thank you so much for sharing. I am patiently waiting for the book in English. Great tips. Thank you.
I'm not a ballpoint artist but I wanted to know how this was done. Great video, many thanks!
adarkerlight You are not ... yet ;)
Allan Barbeau Still not! :D
+Allan Barbeau hey um sir , um , how to avoid ink blotting ? , its a real pain in the butt
like I said in the video. Clean your pen as often as you can before the blob got on your drawing
Allan Barbeau that really is the technique? damn , btw thank you
The majority of the time I draw cartoons/ semi cartoony characters so for me I don't always have to sketch in pencil first- of course if you are drawing realism ( which requires absolute anatomical accuracy) then use a pencil first but if you feel confident it can be good to draw straight away in pen- it reminds you that every mark counts and to not always be focussed on making sketches perfect by relying on an eraser!

This is amazing and something i would love to use as a medium. Do you plan on making any more tutorials? or can you point me in the direction of where i can learn how to use ballpoint pens? books? dvds?

Allan Barbeau You've had 2 years, now where is it :D
This is pretty cool. Thanks
What paper do you recommend? I was told thick 200gsm+ and very smooth is that it? is there any brand you recommend? Excellent video :) Love your work

Great tutorial
I found it on your website! Thanks :)
I'll check it out.
That actually really helps.
Do you think you could do a tutorial on how to mix ballpoint pen colors to make new ones?
You can do the 4 quarters exercice of this video but insted of doing two V1 of the same colour one on top of itch other, do two diferent colours V1 like a light blue and a pink. You'll get a kind of grey
Allan Barbeau That's actually extremely useful, thanks a bunch!

Drawing in pen teaches you to be more confident in what you put on that piece of paper because your mistakes can not be erased

I love pilot the best it writes well ☺️☺️
It's because it's not on line yet ;) I need some time to do it
Upload next parts, don't be shy!
Hypothetically, what would part 2 include?
I remembered I start using blue ballpoint pen to draw mickey mouse when I was young. The pen is not just cheap and easy to get anywhere but is also the feeling of artistic style, similar to pencil drawing.
Where's part 2? I can't find it

How can teach to children's for great 1 or 2
Thank you for sharing your experience! ♥ :) Your drawings are really beautiful, it had to be hard to learn all these things, but you managed it and you're doing great!

Thanks :)
Yes. It's the all point of the video ;)
I usually just rip the ball on the end off. Its hard to use. ;~;
Where is part 2?
some pens I use tend to bleed unnecessarily even when im not putting much pressure 😩😩 can u or anybody here recommend a good brand? thank you!
Pilot or Sarasa
I very sad, where is part two =,( but thanks and for that
Your'e good at drawing
The blobs tend to happen more when the ink is less than half way used I've noticed
that's true ! the best way is to get used to clean the tip of the pen so no surprise :)
Hi Allan!
Great tutorial, but with one huge fault. There is only one part! Please add next tutorials. The more the better:)
Thanks
