I traded in the dp2 I did not like the manual focus it did not seem smooth to me. I did appreciate the files I like the viewfinder on the SD Quattro way better not great but totally doable
I really like these videos about the Sigma's, well, all your videos in general. I've always admired these Sigma cameras but never invested in them mainly due to the cost. It's great seeing them come back as used cameras, because I've always felt like these Quattro cameras were very underrated.
@Wurzel Tee You’re right. It’s so cheap, I’ll run out right now and buy 6 of them right now. Thanks for putting it in perspective random unsolicited internet troll.
This is my first time ever seeing photos coming off of these sensors, and I have to admit that I'm honestly rather shocked. There is something about the images off of this camera that are just very unique. The camera itself has a character that isn't like other cameras. Reminds me of how the Fuji X line has a very unique character as well. I enjoy that from a camera. It may not have all the specs or features, but something about it when you see the result just feels right.
I just invested in a (2009) DP2 after your previous review ... eventually one showed up on ebay. Already a fan of Sigma as I use an SD Quattro H - I needed something more pocketable for those incidental shots - and the compact DP2 is just right. Also stocked up on a set of new batteries. "Good to go!" as you would say!
I seriously want to have Sigma SD Quatro or DP as my new camera. they so unique and add new challenges in my photography skill. unfortunately is no available Indonesia. I think to approach directly to Sigma indonesia just for bought it.... and yes, I adore sigma foveon look since I know DP2 and more impresive when they launch SD1. I think sigma camera is really niche tool for person who love to take time for their picture.
As always a great review. I know this is late to the party but I just became interested in the Sigma cameras. I shoot mostly landscape using Sony RX1R2 and it gives great images, but I just wanted to ask how you think this camera will compare to the images from the Sony? I see that you have used both and I know the speed of the Sigma is going to be much slower in use but I am only interested in the image and at 66 years old, I am sometime slow too!
Mattias! Thank you.. I love when you digging those old phenomenal cameras Some people all around the world still have this famous question " which is better Nikon or Canon??? " 🤣🤣
it's still good this quattro - but you forgot to mention the leaf shutter - so it is also good with flash (outside and at high shutter speeds up to 2000 (where do you find that in a vintage camera...)
You find it in all vintage cameras :) Leaf shutters sits in basically all fixed lens cameras and most medium format. All my old film cameras are leaf shutters, as are all sigma, Fuji, Sony, Panasonic, canon and so on, if they are fixed lens.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter but this is a digital camera: modern digital camera’s have curtain! But this ine has leaf and thus high speed sync flash build in
No you are wrong. All digital cameras with a built in lens has a leaf shutter and can synk at any speed. And I mean all of them. From the cheapest point and shoot Canon to the Fuji x100 or Leica Q.
I've noticed that this new sensor in Quattro series is not that sharper as it was in Merill series... You have tested both, what do you think? I am still deciding to acquire Sigma dp2 Merill as my first foveon cam. Unfortunately due to hype during last couple of years the prices went high =( Couldn't find Merill less cheaper than $500 now
I would be curious to know what you think - its a light focus camera - a bit ahead of its time - though the technology revolutionizes photography and now video; though think it will be years before it takes off. FYI - as you know we are big fans of your work. Always beautifully done.
Your review videos are fantastic your commenty are excellent keep it like that unlike Kai W who really exaggerate things and sometime use unapropiate language I given up on him
I would consider one of these for photographing artwork, if I could be sure that there is as near to zero distortion ad possible. I really don't want to be 'remapping ' files in the process of pulling side frames into place. i would sooner shoot on film with lenses I know then scan. Does sigma publish info about this? Thanks Mattias for yet another very informative review.

I had the dp2 and traded it in beautiful files bus my manual focus it did not seem smooth and I only had a scale I was good with guessing
I'll keep my Sigma DP3M Merrill. The Foveon was changed in th Quattro series. You should compare them like Diglloyd did. Even so the Quattro betas a lot of other cameras for detail.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I have to SP Quattro what is the classic and that one does dng as well. The one thing that annoys me on the SD Quattro is that it does not do dng and jpeg at the same time
What is your opinions regarding to the photo color options in Huawei phone with Leica lens? Vivid and Smooth options produce images that looks quite different compared to the normal option.
Joseph Jagatic Those are so different that I really wouldn'tn't be deciding between them. I would get the Fuji and save up for a Sigma later. My Sigmas are for special occasions :)
Mattias Burling Yes, I think that the Fuji is good for all around use. I currently use the XE1 maybe the XE3 and the Quattro! LOL! Maybe it's time to get rid of some older equipment. I am left eye dominant and appreciate you review of the Xpro2 but feel the XT2 would be better suited if I want to shoot video and ergonomics. Enjoy your exploration of different cameras and how you find positives in anything you use. I would say that is very artistic approach.
Hi Mattias, I've watched your video and I quite surprised (3:32) can you shoot DNG and process it in Lightroom? Is it the latest firmware? Tell me, tell me please :)
They are sharp as a knife :) My old DP1 had a very filmlike quality in B&W. I think it looks very much like a filmstock called Silvermax 100, which Ive used plenty. The Quattro is nice and sharp. Great tonality. But it doesn't have that aesthetic gritty look. Its cleaner.
The SIGMA camera with the Foveon screen used to have problems with red in pictures. Today, it has serious problems managing battery power. Pictures so magical are not. Personally, I do not see the difference between the Sigma Foveon and the Fujifilm X-Trans cameras. But the difference is in battery operation. How much of your Sigma will take pictures on one battery? Because my Fujifilm is doing so about 350-400 photos. I used to be horny on SIGMA Foveon cameras, but since there are Fujifilm X-Trans SIGMA is no longer magic. (sorry text from google translate)
Strange because I used to have a Sigma DP1 Merrill camera. On the new battery was able to do only about 200 photos. He also had serious problems with the mapping of green and red. It was necessary to heavily interfere in the colors in postproduction to "recover" the lost colors.
@neoartysta86 - the Merrill cameras power a very hungry Merrill Foveon sensor with the same battery as the Ricoh GRD and GR, and only get 150-200 photos if you are lucky. The DP Quattro cameras use a new sensor, new processing engine and a much larger battery than the Merrill cameras. Also, the new sensor of the Quattro still has three layers, but instead of RGB like the original Foveon and Merrill, the first layer captures luminance values, while the second two only capture colour values. The new design is intended to increase colour accuracy.
Yes, Foveon has trouble with reds because they are the deepest color registered on the sensor (must pass through the most silicon). But if you don't see the difference between Foveon and Fujifilm X-Trans it can only be because you have never owned and compared both cameras. The inherent problem with all bayer sensors, whether the filter array is a square matrix or in "X" blocks, is that 2 out of 3 colors must be borrowed at every pixel location, from neighboring pixels, to create a full color. Fuji's "X" placement of filters randomizes the bayer's color distortions so they look more natural--but they're still there! The foveon sensor creates a full color at each pixel, so when you print large, as Mattias pointed out, you don't see a blotchy colors which results from the bayer method of color sampling. They're both great cameras, Fuji and Sigma, but they do have very strong imaging differences beyond battery life!
I came back from a Sigma shop. Beautiful colors but the camera is poorly designed and it's impossible to connect Yongnuo radio trigger on it because of lense bulge. Do you know if the Godox X1 works on it?
