    Great review!
    To me, Sigma's Foveon sensors (although APS-C size) basically give you medium format quality for a fraction of the price.
    If you treat it like a film camera loaded with ISO 100 film, it becomes so so so much fun.

      Agreed .. I had lots of fun using this camera ... the colour rendition is so unique too .. thanks for watching

    The detail is simply outstanding from these sensors. I have the sdQuattro.

    The quattro I don't consider a Foveon, The Merrill's were the best, true Foveons. The Quattro is a hybrid sensor made to make the camera more user friendly, a little better ISO.
    If you look at an image from one, you can see the Bayer blur.

    • @DarrenJSpoonley
      @DarrenJSpoonley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed.. I also had the Quattro to test but never really got into it enough to make a review by the time I had to return it to sigma .. the biggest challenge is the processing of the images and finding a way to import them just like a “normal “ file .. thanks for watching

    I totally agree. Have owned the Merrills. Also used the H version. The resolution stunning. Looking forward to the new one that's supposed to be coming in 2020 with the L mount. Images remind me of Kodachrome 25.

      @@DarrenJSpoonley Import in Sigma Photopro, after working on them, output in 16bit TIFF, import in Photoshop final adjustments, export in TIFF or JPG (sometimes I also check on the TIFFs using DXO Photolab 3)

      The trouble I see currently is editing the images as there is no straightforward way to import them to edit

    The Merrills are first processed in Sigmas program which at first was very unstable but has gotten better. Then we process them further in photoshop.

      Thanks Gary, I’ve had to use a plug in for PS, but it only allows single imports and without a preview so I’m blindly importing .. must give that software a go

      @@DarrenJSpoonley not sure if you plan to use a Foveon camera again.. But what I do is, I first only process the images I like the most in SPP. Yes, it's not a batch edit, but I basically finish my Quattro images in two stages. 1. SPP processing with Export to S-Hi(39MP) resolution TIFF files. Later, when I'm done with a few, I import those TIFF files into a dedicated Lightroom organized folder and from there on I choose where to export via LR Mobile. The other option for those who use the sdQuattro and sdQuattro H, is to shoot in DNG in camera and important those directly into your editor of choice.

    On a side note the SD Quattro 4 seems interesting even with old vintage lenses and you get dng $600 might be worth it if you had the capacity right now. Like everyone says you got to think of it like a medium format .

    • @DarrenJSpoonley
      @DarrenJSpoonley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually had the SD Quattro to play with at the same time .. never got around to making a video on it but it was a very good camera to play with

    Why the 50mm converts to 85? Isn't it a 1.5 crop sensor camera? That makes 75

    I already own the dp2 merril but I could trade it in for the dp3 Merrill .people kind of crap on the jpegs but they're actually not that bad and low iso how are people doing with the firmware updates did you find a big difference. The latest Sigma program is downloadable and it's way better than the original still takes a little bit of a methodical sense of working with it. Also definitely use some Flash quite nice and opens up a whole another range of capabilities

      Sadly I didn’t have it for too long .. I really liked the colour science and in the end I got the head around the sigma software .. food for the future tho as the entire eco system is quite unique but good .. thanks for your comment
