- Join us as we travel to Clear Lake, Iowa to visit The Day The Music Died sites...the Buddy Holly Crash Site, The Surf Ballroom and the airport Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper took off from.
On February 3, 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died" after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie".

@@GoldenAgeSk8Video yes. There is a small park not very far from the Surf Ballroom that has a loud speaker system. You can choose songs to play from each of the artists. Also, there are streets named for each individual
I went there a few years ago with my band when we were on tour. My guitar player didn’t know the story but while we were walking around I found him in a booth crying. I asked him what was wrong and he said “those guys were just doing what we do. I couldn’t imagine losing you guys”. It was a day we all remember.

Bopper is buried here in my hometown. My oldest sister worked for boppers wife. Her banana tree is in my parents back yard,potted and still alive.
My Mom's name is Peggy Sue. She was named after the song because my grandfather was driving my grandmother to the hospital. He turned on the car radio to distract her from the pain...The song that came on was Peggy Sue. My Mother was born 15 minutes later and she was named after that song.

I'm impressed that 63 years later and the Surf Ballroom is still open; that it didn't close and get replaced by a multitude of other businesses over the decades. Amazing building; they certainly don't build places like that anymore.

It still features all kinds of music. When I worked in Waterloo, IA at Rock 108 we were at rock shows fairly regularly. And the Surf has had oldies revivals through the years, as well as private parties. Non-profit organizations book it for their events as well. It's really a wonderfully preserved building.
Buddys brother told me once that that would stop at. Icehouses (country bars ) in the country and he’d see old guys playing delta blues and such and buddy would jump out truck and grab guitar and jam with them . They tell him come on
They still have concerts there. I go to some.
It almost did. H schools were having proms in their a lot of receptions and like the music from the 70s we didn't understand how lucky we were.
Hats off to the Surf Ballroom ,for keeping those memories in such pristine condition . Hope to visit one day .
For most Rock & Roll purists AND a lot of Rock & Roll Icons, The Surf Ballroom is almost a religious pilgrimage.
With the Surf Ballroom allowing visitors to check out their spot and record it for TH-cam for me and others to see, then maybe the music will never never die, so to speak :)
@@Airsoftcleaner exactly what I feel and felt while I was there.you can feel the presence of the bands and the dancing people in the ballroom. I live in Iowa and hadn't visited it until a few years ago, but you do feel something there and at the crash site.
I hope with all of my heart that when it came time for Waylon to go home Buddy was there to greet his friend with "No hard feelings" and a big hug.

I was six years old when they died. I remember walking into my Uncle Mike's bedroom. He was playing Buddy Holly on his record player as loud as it would go. He was curled up around it on the floor sobbing. I was too young to know the depth of his sorrow.

I'm Mexican and grew up hearing my dads records of Richie Valens, he said he used to hear and sing the songs and learned english language with their music since he was a child, he was a poor worker kid and now he is a retired Architect and professor, sky is the limit, I do cry every time I go back hearing this music and watching videos from this artists!!!
I’m a Rock musician from the same area where Ritchie grew up: the San Fernando Valley. He’s a local legend there, and I always looked up to him for inspiration as a local guy who made good. Anyway, at one point, his student ID and photo could be seen in a glass case at San Fernando High School (these items, sadly, we’re stolen some time ago). His body is interred at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery.

My late father was 23 years old that bitter, cold morning he went out to start his coal truck, in West Virginia. It came over the radio. He described in great detail the utter shock and emotion he felt hearing that fateful news that day. He was a huge fan of all three and it haunted him til his old age. Thank you for this video. I feel the emotion in this video. I am currently 45 years old and I made the decision to become a musician, whatever that meant, the day I saw the movie ‘LaBamba’ in 1987, at the age of 10. I became obsessed with Valens, Buddy Holly, The Beach Boys, and pretty much all of the great oldies groups. The Beach Boys were my first concert at the age of 12, and as projected, I bought my first guitar at the age of 13 and over the next year or two, taught myself to play by ear, mostly by playing along to songs on the radio and my small collection of tapes and CD’s. To this day, I am still a musician who has sort of moved on to learn many more instruments, and I can still recall the fire that the beautiful product these men offered the world put in my belly those many years ago!
Big Bopper's son was right when he asked "why isn't there a movie about my dad?" I completely agree. I feel like JP gets overshadowed when he absolutely shouldn't.

This is one of the most saddest time in history, their lives were snuffed out too soon. I always cry when I watch La Bamba especially when his mom cries out not my Ritchie. We are definitely walking history, it’s ok to cry we are human and so connected.

Buddy Holly is the reason why I make a living as a musician today. He was my first music hero back in the 80s when I was a little kid. I need to make this pilgrimage myself someday.

You can just feel the teens sitting in their booths, chatting and laughing, boyfriends and girlfriends. It’s unchanged. Surf Ballroom is sacred.

There is a Plaque from The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inside The Surf Ballroom representing its part of Rock & Roll history.
Nothing wrong with being overwhelmed with emotion, Buddy, Ritchie, J.P's spirits are alive and well in that building, it was rock and rolls first tragedy.
This video was made with sensitivity and respect for the four victims. I have wondered just what the airplane was, where they were headed, and what time the crash occurred. Three brilliant careers ended tragically that cold night. Thank you for making this and posting it. Even in tis year of 2023, the song "Peggy Sue" remains the best rock-and-roll song ever recorded, in my humble opinion..

Don't feel silly, bud. My parents introduced me to rock with all the great 50's music. I have listened to Buddy for HOURS and HOURS.
I discovered Buddy's music in my dad's collection as a small boy. Big fan ever since. I'm getting close to 60 now and in Scotland, not the US. I'll probably never get to visit the Ballroom or the crash site - but you took me there. I really appreciate this. And I can quite understand and imagine just how moving those sites would be to visit. Thank you, so much.

You can. Come to lubbock I use to live near his house where he got married also found one house he lived. It was down street from strip club but it’s gone now. Also he built a house that had a studio in it for his mom and dad before he died. It’s near Texas tech university. WYlon lived 40 miles west and Roy Orbison lived in another city. When he was a kid. Also a lot of movie stars lived here and lead singer from loan star went to school here also singers from the velvets were from here

I did visit the crash site and the Surf Ballroom in Iowa back in 2018. It was very moving to see that almost 70 years later, it was still visited.
This has got to be the most in-depth and highest quality version of covering this. Thank you. This was incredible to watch. I appreciate that you two care just as much as any other real artist/musician. We can feel how powerful it must have been for you both to walk these steps.
Crazy story. I was on a cross country road trip last summer and this was the last real stop after going for a month on the way back home to the east coast. I’ve always been a big Buddy Holly fan so this was a special pilgrimage for me. My friend and I visited the Surf and then hiked out to the middle of the field on a 90 degree day at the end of July. I had about a minute to absorb it before a kitten came out, running right under the 3 records to greet myself and my friend. She was incredibly friendly, and had an injury on her leg. No animal shelter within 50 miles was willing to help her, so I went and got supplies while my friend stayed with her. We drove 26 hours straight back and she now lives with my dad. We named her Holly.
That was my daughter's cat. Nippy McWhiskers. She loved playing in that field, and always came home after a little while.
My daughter has been heartbroken ever since you stole it.

It's crazy to think Waylon Jennings was almost on that plane. Without him there would be no "good old boys" theme song for the Dukes of Hazzard. Amazing when you think about how things happen and how it effects history.

I just went to Clear Lake a few weeks ago...as a huge Buddy Holly fan, I was overwhelmed with emotion when I entered the ballroom and went to the crash site....it was a clear, sunny beautiful day with a light breeze...at the crash site, I could feel Buddy's presence...I felt at peace knowing Buddy was at peace in that moment...thank you for covering this...♥️

This video gave me chills. My grandparents met at the Surf Ballroom in 1943 or 44 right before my grandpa left to fight in WWII. They got married soon after he got back from the war and were happily married for 67 years. I haven’t thought of Buddy Holly or The Surf Ballroom in years and glad your video popped up on my feed to remind me.

My grandma would’ve been 19 at the time. I remember her mentioning how sad she was when she found out that they all passed. She said was a fan of all their music. So just seeing this, and hearing her stories just makes it all so much more real. Also, I’m from West Texas, so Buddy Holly means a lot to us! Thank you for uploading this video. Living just 10 mins from there and almost daily being in Clear Lake it's easy to take for granted how historical the Surf is. Seen many shows there it's a great venue to watch a show. It's so cool to see someone making a video to remind me of the importance of the Surf. Great video although a sad story.

I was with a road band called The Impostors from March of 1987 until May of 1989. We played the Surf in the winter of 1988. As luck would have it, I met the manager of the place who was the same fellow who was there the night Buddy Holly played there and later died in the plane crash about 10 minutes from here. He's long gone now, but he was fascinating to talk to. I've not seen the interior since that night, so seeing it again on here was a sort of deja vu moment. Brought back a ton of memories., that's for sure. Someday I'll make the long trip from where I live back over the Surf one last time.
I don't even know what to say to you both that everyone else hasn't said already but I'm going to start by saying that this video is a serious candidate for a major award. When you research ahead of time to prepare for your tremendous work, especially on this one, you can clearly see the quality of your hard work. I can't stop watching this video cause it is so good & so historically informative that it's the go to video for ANY music enthusiast or historian. The quality of your videos is proof of ALL your dedication & hard work. I really want someone to consider entering this video to the 🎵 music industry for award consideration, it's that good. When I was a child and my parents would tell me about this, I always thought the ones who died looked old. Now when I look at them they look like baby faces. They were so young. I'm still watching your video now, but so far it is awesome!

I love the way they did these ballrooms back then....where people can dance or cheer their musicians away from the seating...what a great place that you took us to. An absolutely stunning venue. Everything that happens has already been decided from your existence till your death and everything in between,these three amazing musicians were put here for our enjoyment !! Their lives touched millions,their music influenced many that we have grown up with !! I was just a baby when these 3 young men were killed but because of an Aunt who was a teenager when they were popular she introduced me to them !! I still listen to them to this day !! Although these 3 individuals may of perished that cold snowy night in 1959 their music lives on and will continue to be a testimony of just how special these men were !! Rest In Peace to these 4 men !!
I agree with you @davidday8417, i still have my Fathers records of Buddy Holly that we used to play on a dancette i grew up with them, i still play them to this day, the crackle a bit now but they were from a time he was still alive says it all really.
My dad introduced me to Buddy Holly’s music as a kid when we drove from Sydney to Brisbane every holiday and we would listen to his music, we always seem to sing Peggy Sue Got louder when it came on - our car trips were always Buddy and Elvis music.
Buddy Holly's one of my favorite musicians ever. I'm from Lubbock so sometimes I visit his gravesite to pay my respects. Thanks for doing this.
It's May 2023 and I've just watched this. Thank you. I've always wanted to visit and pay my respects but am on another continent and that is never going to happen. This was the next best thing. You are both so respectful and this was so heartfelt.

Your compilation here and detailed interviews are phenomenal! My husband is a pilot here in Iowa and we’ve owned a small plane flying in and out of Mason City many times. Feels very real and jarring when you’re up in the clouds above the area. 4 young guys simply going somewhere… no different than us. Got a dad who did the same for me with ‘ol rock and roll, so I get ya on the emotion. 🖤🖤
Man, an emotional video indeed!! I've been a fan of Ritchie Valens since seeing La Bamba when it came out (i still have the soundtrack on vinyl) and of course, Buddy Holly, after seeing the incredible Gary Busey performance in 1978 on video (also have the soundtrack on vinyl). This event is part of rock's mythology and i still get chills when i watch those movies or hear the real guys play those songs. They are rock 'n' roll royalty ❤

At 39:10 she starts recounting the story in a way that almost makes you feel she was there. She is giving facts but speaking in a narrative that is so authentic. Well done.
Beautifully done! So respectful. I too, loved the music and I was way too young to know it. The crash was 4 years before I was born. But I know a girl, well, a woman named Peggy Sue, named after the song. Thank you both for doing this so very well. Happy Halloween.

I was 1 1/2 years old when this happened, lived about 40 miles from there. Within the past 4 years, we've visited the Surf Ballroom, the airport and the crash site twice. Chilling. I get the chills every time we visit. I was overcome with emotion. It's a feeling you can't describe. Your documentary is spot on, best I've seen. Thank you for sharing.
I grew up listening to the music of all 3 of these great men. My mama loved The Big Bopper. I remember watching The Buddy Holly Story when I was in grade school and he captivated me. As a young teen, I lived in the same city as Ritchie Valens (Pacoima, CA.), although it was decades after they tragically passed away. My emotions were definitely raw watching this. Thank You for telling the story with the respect that it deserved. ❤️
I’m over here getting emotional with you. I just turned 40, but my dad had me listening to Ritchie and Buddy as far back as I can remember music. I got the chills when you showed the doorway. God damn, how close life and death are…50/50 shot of a coin toss. Great job!

This story has always been near and dear to me my whole life. First off I was born and raised in Iowa. Next they died on Feb 3rd 1959 and I was born Feb 4 1959. Somehow as my soul was coming into this world and these souls were leaving this earth we passed. I love music can't sit still when I hear music. I always feel so sad when I see The Surf and feel the loss like I was there. They did find Buddy's glasses in that corn. Field years later. The day I was born the world was in morning and I've always felt it. The energy of that ballroom is bittersweet. Enjoyed this one the most which knocked the David Oman house. You and Baby Ghoul are really raising the bar of professional content you bring to your channel.
I would imagine that the airport doesn't want to reference a plane crash for the sake of the passengers. I live in Huntington WV home of Marshall University. If you aren't aware, Marshalls entire football team was killed in a plane crash in 1970. There's a memorial at Marshalls stadium and there's a memorial at the East Carolina University stadium where the final game was played. But there is no mention of the crash at Tri State Airport where the crash occurred.
That's the thing I love about your channel; you both always give the proper level of respect and gravitas to these memorial locations.

Out of all the young musicians who have died I think Buddy Holly was one of the most talented writers.
I found your channel when TH-cam recommended your Clutter family murders. I shared it with my daughter-in-law and she liked it. I appreciate the respect and sensitivity that you give to all of those who have passed. And that you remind people to be respectful of private property. The owners of this land are amazing people for letting others come to pay their respects. They could demand a charge to go there, but they don’t. They have my respect. So much talent was lost that cold winter night.
iv never shed a tear for anyone no matter how famous that iv never met before but youve broken that mould. thank you for bringing this to me and others and its been such an enlightment and brings home the situation that brought this tragedy about. I was a youngster at the time of this happening and can remember meeting a crowd of other youngsters who broke the news early one afternoon. An what a tribute the preservation of the magnifcent ballroom and the reflection it brings to what was and what might have been.Thank you.

Man this is my favorite episode so far. I was introduced to the music of the three when I was a kid when my dad put on the La Bamba movie from the 80’s. It’s still my favorite soundtrack from a movie. I went on to become a huge fan of Buddy and Ritchie. How can anyone who loves rock n roll not appreciate the amazing songs they put out in such a little amount of time? The ballroom and the crash site are definitely a bucket list destination for me. I’m also from Pittsburgh!
My father was a disc jockey in Detroit and had to announce it on the air. He was the morning drive time disc jockey, so he came in around 5am. It came across a teletype machine, and he had to take a minute to realize it wasn't someone messing with him. Because all 3 artists died, so it was hard to believe.
He also had to announce on air when Patsy Cline died. I remember him telling me that he announced it, then as a tribute played one of her songs. As it played it dawned on him that she died in a plane crash and he was playing "Falling to Pieces". 😬 Ooooops!

The Surf Ballroom is beautiful and a preserved time capsule of Mid western 1950`s Americana .
The place was all worn down and almost demolished when a group of people stepped up, saved and restored it. Now it is a protected national monument.
