- Today we talk about what has become known as "The Day the Music Died"
On February 3, 1959, rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, as well as the pilot Roger Peterson. We will fly over the last two venues they played at and talk about the events leading up to the crash. The tour they were on was the 1959 Winter Dance Party Tour.

This was put together fantastic. The history. I mean,such a great job on this! Bopper is buried in my hometown of Beaumont, Texas. I will soon visit him again and place the video on TH-cam. Was very bone chilling my last visit to his grave. I was alone, the graveyard silent. All of a sudden I could hear a engine and a small plane came into view. It shook me. A small plane and all I could do was thank God for the gift of life because each day is a blessing we take for granted
My Aunt grew up in Beaumont Texas and used to listen to his radio show at the local radio station before he became famous and kept up with his music. She never met him or his family to my knowledge. She was at high school when she found out about the crash was a junior in high school.
I learned that lesson when I got very sick in the summer of 2021.
They moved him to new site awhile back right? that whole story about his son seeing him for the first time was creepy but very cool too, imagine never knowing your Mom or Dad and then you get to see them in the grave decades later, i guess its better than nothing.

I live my life everyday 1950s with my wife apart from my hidden laptop I love R n R. My dad passed Thursday he was only 61, this video cheered me up a little thank you. I will be driving my 59 T bird a dads funeral just as Richie had at his.

The cause of the crash was due to a few circumstances. Pedersen had only flown that plane a few times. He was not certified for instrument flying. In 1959, planes could have one of two, very different, gyroscopes that recorded altitude and balance to the horizon line. This plane's gyroscope opperated completely opposite of the one in the plane he was most used to flying. When the plane got north of the airport, the tower instructed Pedersen to bank to the right. Pedersen made that maneuver, but must have looked at the instrument and gotten confused. What he would've seen would've been the opposite of what he was expecting to see. He would've thought, by the instrument, that he had banked left, instead of right. His correction from this would've been to bank back to the right (when he had truly banked right to begin with), which would've took the banking further to the right. If a plane of this type gets to the 90° point, it would stall and go down quickly. The investigation found that the tip of the right wing was the first part of the plane to hit that field. It then rolled, end-over-end, until it came to rest against that fence.
Peterson was not IFR certified, flying at night and in the snow was pretty much suicide. Totally avoidable accident :(
@@leanoynomousdotcom It was a known fact that it wasn't IFR certified, you didn't need to be there to know that. also the AH on the Beechcraft Bonanza worked differently than ones he'd trained on and previously used, so I guess that added to the confusion. it's so sad and totally avoidable. :(
Buddy, Richie, and Jape had all been drinking pretty heavily. Their pilot who had been flying them told them he was cancelling the mission because of ice in the air. Buddy fired him. They hired a low-time pilot who held neither a commercial certificate or an instrument rating. As far as the artificial horizon is concerned, that just speaks to the incompetence and inexperience of the pilot. After all is said and done, the AH is really a bonus instrument. Had the pilot relied upon his other steam gauges, he would have realized his AH was malfunctioning. This was a flight that should never have taken place.
@@beachbum1523 They hadn't had a pilot flying them. They had been on a bus(es) since the start of the tour. Flying to the next venue was a last minute decision. Buddy called the airport to charter a plane. Mr. Petersen was the only local pilot available. He wasn't stupid. He made a mistake, while flying in the dark.

I've kind of looked at the case in a very cursory and fairly superficial way, but have never gotten to do a detailed and methodical study. You clearly have. My expertise is the Kennedy assassination, so it's nice to have folks like you to draw a picture for those of us who are very much novices.

Great presentation. I was 12 when this tragedy happened. I loved playing with the old radio we had. At night I could hear stations from all over the mid west. I cried when I heard of the crash.
Thank you for sharing this tragic story. I just visited the crash site on 7/21/22. Many people still take the time to visit this location. The momentos and memorials that are there are very moving. So sad that these 4 young men had their lives cut short.

The worst music tragedy to ever happen. 3 different artists of that generation to suddenly die together. Terrible, so terrible and awful. To think if this never had happened; if they agreed to wait out the storm, what they would have gone on to accomplish. It breaks my heart. They created true music of that generation while they were here. The 50s I absolutely adore and cherish. That decade truly went out with a bang I hate to say /:

Actually I believe that was the day the music continued ! Dion went on to have a very successful career in music and he's still putting songs out through today . Yes many folks lost three up and coming greats ! I was only 1 yrs old when this took place but I've been a fan of Buddy's and the other two . Great music never dies ; it just stays around forever . Long live Buddy, Richie and the big bopper.

That was a flight that should have never happened. Bad weather bad visibility & an inexperienced pilot. A combination that spelled disaster.

As a non-licensed pilot and a simmer only (3500+hrs with over 600 hrs sim IFR and night flying--for what that's really worth), I have taken and passed the real private pilot's ground and commercial ground schools. I read a LOT of NTSB reports and Probable Cause videos. MY GUESS as to why this crash occurred is this: The pilot was distracted. Your video said that he took off VFR with the intention of giving his flight plan after takeoff. Trying to talk to a tower setting up a flight plan...in the middle of the night...in a flight path that has little if ANY lighting on the ground...with lowering ceilings AND light snow increasing in intensity (NTSB report said he unwittingly flew into a fast moving and growing cold front)...with NO visual reference to the ground... not paying attention to his artificial horizon and altitude indicators because he's dealing with filing a flight plan...yes, he was distracted, THAT'S why he crashed. The mind set that is DRILLED into student pilots minds today (stemming from this case as well as others) is "AVIATE, NAVIGATE, COMMUNICATE"--IN THAT ORDER. The aviation world learned this very sad lesson from this crash--as well as Patsy Cline's (enjoyed your video tour of that one). Another indicator that he was distracted was when the investigators pulled the artificial horizon instrument from the wreckage the horizontal line indicating the horizon line showed VERTICAL not HORIZONTAL which matched up with the way the wreckage ended up: He had his wing pointing straight to the ground, losing lift, clipping the ground with the wingtip turning the plane in a sideways somersault fashion, balling it up like crumpled tin foil. One night flight I was simming from Indianapolis, IN to Evansville, IN ended up exactly the same way: I was looking 'down' having a hard time getting my autopilot to work when (in my simulator) the picture froze showing the external attitude of my plane (Beech King Air C90) nose down at a 45 deg angle and the left wingtip touching the ground like the nose. Scary as hell even when it's a simulation!!!
The work load as you said can become overwhelming just in a sim, so can't imagine what it would take in that situation with the factors you pointed out. Complete faith (and competency) in your instruments goes a long way.

That and flying into icing conditions very well could have degraded the performance (especially if trying to bank the airplane) of the airplane. Who knows, icing of the pitot tube could had an alarming distraction to the pilot. W. Jennings got so so lucky.
Is it possible the artificial horizon instrument can show the wrong reading during investigation because of impact changing it? It seems like a hard impact would change some of the gauges readings.
Apparently not, according to many NTSB reports I've read. The impact locks up the mechanics of the instrument instead.

I love the music of all three of these. Such a shame, because small aircraft are not reliable transportation in areas of bad weather. Always treat cross-country night flying as IFR-ONLY!
Bonanza's in 1959 were quite Dangerous to fly without VFR. Nicknamed the "Forked V Tail Doctor Killer". Peterson wasn't at fault here. He was just a YOUNG pilot trying to do his job. He wasn't IFR Certified, but he WAS IFR Trained and was in the process of completing his IFR Certification.
Also, this was 1958-59, Deicing wasn't even common at the time.
So sad and so unnecessary. Flying at night, bad weather and/or low visibility conditions just a recipe for disaster. Since this unnecessary crash there have been so many famous and not famous people that have died from the same bad decisions.
Yes, Patsy Cline's plane should have never taken off either in the weather conditions and with an minimally experienced pilot that only had VFR certification.

Great video. I'm from Mason City Iowa....born n raised... I'm 40 so that happened b4 my time but every year there's a anniversary at the surf ballroom in memory's of them. Never been to one yet but I plan to one day. I've been inside the surf b4 for different events

In 1959 I was 4 years old I was in the hospital living in Pittsfield Illinois at the this I can remember that I haven surgery on my feet at this time I was watching a black and white when the news reported what happen
Woo, a new version, I'm only at the 2 second mark, but I can tell this one will be a great one. I was re-watching Dion's video called "The True Buddy Holly Story" and according to him, they were up in the air for only 4 minutes, didn't know that so I went to go change my alarm to 1:59 am. (Living in Eastern standard time, so in order to get true accurate times, I add an hour to the central standard time.)
If you're on in Eastern standard time and see this comment for me the times are as follows:
8:30 PM est, The Winter Dance Party Tour of 1959 arrive at the Surf Ballroom.
9:00 PM est, The performance begins.
1:00 AM est, The performance ends.
1:55 AM est, The Beechcraft Bonanza takes off from The Mason City Municipal Airport.
1:59 AM est, The Beechcraft Bonanza, carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, along with the pilot Roger Peterson, crashes into a snow covered farm field.
I hope these times will prove helpful for those who live in Eastern standard time who want to remember the event as they were in real time.

@@gerberbernstein7360 I know, I know that he did not toss the coin with Valens, initially believed it but then found more evidence proving him wrong than right. I was very confused when I first heard the conflicting testimonies but after enough digging, I came to the conclusion that Tommy tossed the coin. Not Dion, Dion refused the seat because of the $36 price tag, which was the same amount of money as the taxes that his parents had to pay and argue over. Going back, I don't know why he said that he refused because of the $36 but then goes right around and said "I tossed with Valens". Because it doesn't support one another.
@@gerberbernstein7360 Well none of us were there and it's been over 62 years now. Whose to say which version is the truth? Dion was there. He's the only headliner still alive from that night. Maybe BOTH tossed a coin at some point. Maybe no one did! And Dion's a legend in spite of what you say - he's no clown. And as a devout Christian, I doubt that he's going to just start making up stories about such a tragic event. He also felt the price of the plane trip was way too high for such a short hop.

None of us were there. Dion was, and he's the only living member left from that leg of the Tour From Hell. Dion is in his 80s now too - perhaps, after over 62 years now, his memory isn't what it once was. Either way, imo, his storytelling in The True Buddy Holly Story seems credible enough.

You have to be spiritual to understand why.
Well done simulation and reasonably researched. Decca was the parent company of Coral Records, the actual label that put out the hits of Buddy Holley and the Crickets (Joe B. Maudlin, Niki Sullivan and Jerry Allison). They recorded at the Novajak Studio in Clovis, New Mexico, a former general store and service station that had a railroad track running behind it. Because of freight train noise, the recordings had to be timed for when the train was not running, so a lot of the recordings were done at odd hours, some after midnight. Norman Petty's early 1957 deal with Buddy set Buddy on the collision course. It was a typical bad deal that gave Petty the advantage on how the money was distributed, but that was not unusual for the era. Petty had connections to get the recordings on the air and he knew Bob Thiele, a successful record producer in New York who knew how to produce hits. Buddy and his band had no way of getting their songs further than Lubbock. You are right, Buddy was strapped for cash and he had plans to produce records on his own label, so he took the ill-fated, unorganized tour that was promoted by Alan Freed, a DJ who became a greedy, but successful promoter of early Rock and Roll. The zig-zagging was poor planning and the bus, contrary to folklore was not a rickety old bus, but did have issues with the heating system during the freezing weather experienced on the tour. Cal Bunch, Buddy's drummer, was even hospitalized for frost bite. One final poignant note, Buddy, an aviation enthusiast was said to have boasted he could probably learn to "fly a garbage can". So Buddy was not the least bit afraid of flying that night. Roger Peterson was actually three months shy of his 22nd birthday. He had racked up 52 hours of instrument training and had passed the written test, but failed an actual IFR test in 1958. He had 128 hours of flight training in the same aircraft type, but none of his IFR training had been taken in that same airplane. As soon as they lifted off at Dwyer he experienced a complete "white-out". Imagine someone throwing a blanket across your windshield as you are going 80 down the freeway. He suffered from spatial disorientation and had no idea what was up or down. The plane's right wing hit the ground which caused the plane to cartwheel and tear it self to shreds.

I was just reading that the plane hit the ground at full speed nose first..Sounds like he ran out of fuel or the plane stalled or because the temperature was 8 degrees possibly heavy icing on the wings..Never really looked into why the plane crashed..At that age in bad weather not enough experience maybe he panicked..I just looked that up it said the pilot hit the ground at full speed nose-first ejecting everybody but himself..Sad when I heard that so much talent gone..

I’ve recently got into the whole story of Buddy and along the way I’ve came a fan . I’m Gen X . Grew up with the 90’s style alternative music and Metallica . I’m also a musician and so I see Buddy’s style lead to the Beatles and then so on he first one to create the “band” as we know it today . 2 guitarist and bassist and drummer. He first one to start over dubs with guitar sounds . So I am a fan of his .

As this is the first time I’ve seen your plane tour, I thought you was gonna re-enact the plane crash by crashing the simulation plane so we get to see what it would of felt like for those poor singers, it was back in the 80’s that I learnt about the plane crash story of buddy, ritchie & big bopper, the buddy holly story & la bamba is 2 of my favourite movies
I almost thought the exact same thing! I was also hoping he would simulate the flight exactly how the route was planned from take off to how it would’ve been if they landed .. the extra tour was okay though..

Austin Straubel’s died on Feb 3rd the same as Buddy Holly. In 1959 there was no requirement for the Pilot of a single engine charter flight to hold an Instrument Rating. That accident triggered the change in CAA rules.
Patsy Cline died in '63 in a similar scenario crash( bad weather), and I don't think that pilot had an instrument rating. But he was not a hired pilot, he was her manager and not an employee of a charter company.
It's sad that they put rock stars on reconditioned school busses. Those rock stars should have been on luxury luxury bus liners with sleepers and a toilet. I looked it up and those existed back then like they do now. A documentary said that 5 busses were used and a total of 15 breakdown between the 5 busses because of the cold weather and the old reconditioned busses not being able to handle the weather. If the musicians were put on a luxury sleeper busleeper bustin the airline trap is airplane tragedy would never have happened.
Different times I guess. Before rock stars were the draw they became in following decades.
it was said that buddy holly put this tour on himself and wanted to get the best upcoming rock and roll stars. So what ever buddy holly vehicile he was using was his own not the record label but still you would think they would of took care of them no matter what but sad situation for all 3

Thank you very much. Very fun video. However, I think that Buddy, Ritchie and Big Bopper never took plane from Greenbay. They were in that bus in that Carl Bunch froze his feet in on February 2, 1959 when it broke down. A guy took them in his car to Clear Lake and got them in Surf Ballroom at 07h30, just in time. They began the show half an hour after and in the mid-show Buddy decided to take a plane to get to Fargo, North Dakota from the Dwyer Flying Co. They embarked at 01h00 and 5 minutes later they were dead.
General Artist Corporation was never held accountable for the way those musicians were poorly treated...
No accountability, no scrutiny of any kind towards G.A.C for the miss treated musicians what so ever...
And that's the whole irony of the three legendary singers death's...

Whoa, this tour was without a doubt, ill prepared for their transportation between gigs. Whoever was responsible, did a poor job. This tragedy could've been easily avoided if they just had buses that were adequate.

I never realized the plane rolled about 5 times after the wing hit the ground. The wreckage was so mangled, it was hard to tell what happened. To this day, when i see a Beech Bonanza, it gives me the creeps.
They don't call the Bonanza "The V-tailed doctor killer" for nothing.

I have been fascinated by this really tragical part of Rock & Roll. It’s still so heart breaking to watch and take it all in.
I must congratulate you on this amazing production. The facts and details are accurate and so informative on everything about that “ill fated tour”. It’s truly sad how a chain of events on the tour led to the disaster that was to happen after the concert at The Surf Ballroom. In truth, the freezing weather conditions played the biggest role as it affected every part of the tour, and the fact that geographically, it was poorly planned!

Buddy and the Guys were not pickedup by a
Greyhound Bus they were Pickedup by the
Sheriff's Department.
In 1959 Greyhound Buses DID NOT EXSIST YET!

thought this was gonna try and explain with digital aircraft video of what might have gone wrong. Oh well. Cool to see the area from above, and pretty crazy that the pilot couldn't make a landing in farmland. Could have just landed on one of the rural roads. Too bad.

The impact site, is a good city block from the resting point. I grew up in this area. The owner couldn't haul that wreck off fast enough. It's never been found.
Is there a company that gives last flight tours reproducing the last short route they took? were there ANY other charter flights Carol could've called? or was this the only one? How many lawsuits were filed after this event, who filed and who were the targets, and what were the results?
The location for the airport zoomed in to Minnesota not Wisconson????
Very well done. it's a shame you didn't use a Beechcraft Bonanza (the V- tailed doctor killer as it was known) but I guess that software might not have the aircraft. Personally I blame Jerry Dwyer and Roger Peterson for this, it was a totally avoidable crash, Peterson was not IFR certified and not only did he know this but so did Dywer, so the fact he flew at night in the snow is utterly shocking and they are to blame 100%. (Did you know that JP, the Big Bopper still hasn't been inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame, considering all the things he did, that's ridiculous)

They were joking. Buddy said something like, “I hope you freeze to death….” He replied, “Well, I hope your plane crashes…” it really haunted him for the rest of his life.
Oh! I almost forgot : the cause of the accident was the spatial disorientation of the pilot, plus what they call the "Coriolis effect", as well as a bad model of OBS -- a very important instrument for a pilot -- in which the sky was dark and ground was clear. Therefore, that leads to make Peterson believe his plane went in the right direction (toward the sky) when in reality it went down. If you want to understand better what is that phenomenon, just go to the NTSB web site and ask for the Advisory Circular of the 2/9/83. In February 1959 they didn't knew that phenomenon. However, in our days, there is still many guys that went down because of that and with the modern electronic cockpits, in which the OBS is in the middle of many other instruments in jet planes, they expects many more deaths, unfortunately.
Same scenario that happened to JFK junior,instead of flying over the coast like he was told were there were plenty of lights and hanging a left after so much time and flying straight he went right over the black ocean and black night with no experience and we all know what happened, ive been flying sims for years and although its not the same as flying a real plane the feeling you get when you have no idea whats going on at night its pretty nasty and sick cause you know any second its gonna be the end if you dont correct the issue.
@@dntlss Thank you for the story of JFK jr. Yesterday I do ask myself if his story had something in common with Buddy's and I promised myself to get the NTSB report. But you answered my question. Thanks ! :-) I just bought X-Plane 11 few weeks ago ; I'm just beginning in that game and I am nor able to enter the radionavigation data in the Garmin, nor programming the right airport or use the OVB to land. And there is no simple "recipe" somewhere to help me doing that. It gets frustrating. Anyway... Still trying until success... Have a nice day.
I'm from but not originally Lubbock, Texas which seen Buddy Holley's grave as his parents which all 3 are together in the City Of Lubbock Cemetery. I've also been to the Buddy Holly Museum on 19th Street. Yeah he opened for Elvis Presley at the South Plains Fairgrounds in Lubbock, Texas which is at Broadway & Avenue A.
