This movie is the definition of: "You will hear it has flaws and it will stop you from watching it but years later when you finally watch it you will think to yourself: 'Why were people even complaining? I wish I had just seen it when it was new!'"
Fully agreed. Just saw it and it was great. Way better than it's trailers. Yes, some of the CGI was annoying, plus it could have been 20 minutes shorter, but aside from these two facts the movie just delivered on all ends: story, score, sound, editing, acting, action choreography...you name it.
Agree. I love going to that world. I tend to say the same about Peter Jackson's Thr Hobbit. Far inferior trilogy, deviates from the book too much but I'll go to Jackson's middle earth anytime. And enjoy it.
The fact that this movie was directed by an almost 80 year old man who also had Happy Feet and Babe in his filmography is insane. George Miller is a true artist and his versatility deserves so much appreciation
Chris Noonan was the director of Babe while George Miller was the producer. George Miller directed Babe: Pig in the City. As well as 4 Mad Max movies, 2 Happy feet movies and Furiosa, he directed Lorenzo's Oil, The Witches of Eastwick, and Three Thousand Years of Longing. He also directed the 4th segment in Twighlight Zone the Movie.
Speaking as a Nolan fan, I feel like the CGI backlash has gotten a little bit out of hand. Yes, there is more noticeable CGI in this film compared to Fury Road but every shot clearly has George Miller's fingerprints all over it, he didn't turn it over to the VFX department and have them work on it by themselves, every bit of it was designed with his approval to bring his vision to life. It doesn't always look real, but it looks unique. And you can't say that about many blockbusters nowadays.
The same people who will complain about the "noticeable CGI" in this movie will still turn around and call Jurassic Park and the original Star Wars movies masterpieces
Exactly. It's about how well it fits into the movie, not if you "can tell that it's CGI" and so many of these shots were NEAR indistinguishable from the rest of the style of the movie. And that's what counts. Also quit putting a microscope to trailers and scenes when they should be taken as a whole. And to the naked eye so many of these CGI shots stood up to the live stuff.
The best thing I can say about this movie is that while it is a wildly different film from Fury Road I really like that because at the same time it enhances Fury Road even more. Furiosa takes its time more, sets up characters and lore and so now when I go into Fury Road again I have a better understanding of the world and I’ll appreciate it more.🙏🏻
@@OrionInSpace critics though they put it more diplomatically like here saying it borrows from it. Or another that says it's a retelling of the same legend from the other films, but with Furiosa as the protagonist.
It’s not a “rip off”, it’s a story in the same world as Fury Road, so has some of the same feel as that movie, but it’s in no way a copy. Besides, saying that George Miller is “ripping off” his own work is not really the best way to describe a prequel.
I really liked Furiosa, but I can understand why it wasn't a box office success. It's VERY random and intricate. There is a mixture of a protagonist infiltrated in a dangerous environment, a chase plot, a rivalry plot and a revenge plot.
Mad Max Fury Road was a "capture lightning in a bottle" situation. It's a movie that revived the franchise after went on hiatus for 30 years so nobody was really anticipating the level of masterpiece that Fury Road achieved. So i can feel the pressure from Miller and his team in making this movie as they were living under a huge shadow for like 9 years in making this movie. And i kinda think Miller himself knew that this movie is never going to be as good as the first but he still wanted to give his best shot. And for the most part, despite some flaws, i still enjoyed the movie from start to finish, i appreciate the effort that the brought to this movie and if i have a free time, i'd absolutely see the movie again someday
Dan! Did you see Tom Rothman's comments in Deadline about how to bring people back to the movies? It's all stuff you've been saying: Bring budgets down, bring run times back to where they used to be. Bring theatre prices back down to where they once were, and don't be slaves to IPs.
Funny, because along with David Zaslav he’s a kiss of death in the industry as an airhead executive who doesn’t know what the heck he’s doing, but in a rare case of the broken clock being right, he’s absolutely got his hand on the pulse of this one.
I agree with everything except the runtimes aspect. There are countless examples of long movies being fantastic and making money. And audiences will always pick a movie telling a full story as opposed to it being crunched for time. But budgets, theater prices, and not being a slave to IPs are absolutely true.
I'm so annoyed by all those overly-long movies who go on for no reason whatsoever. if a movie is long and every minute is justified, then that's great! but it often isn't and that's just a detriment to the movie.
'Slave to IPs' there's a shit ton of original movies that are made, but the problem is that Audiences aren't going. They're only going to IP driven films. God this argument annoys me.
A foil arms and hog skit hit the nail on the head with this one. Its not the IP. It's can you explain it in one sentence. Algorithms have trained us to title things a certain way. People don't have time for investing in something which doesn't immediately fall into their insta feed because of SEO. Its not IP. Its SEO That's the issue.
As a person that loves… loves Fury Road, I can’t say that it was a massive success, it had a decent run but it didn’t smash the box office when it came out, if Furiosa gets around 380M then it’s gonna be on par with Its predecessor
It's rare to see a franchise being that has been alive for decades and it's so far being handled by one director. I honestly don't know how the franchise could go if George Miller someday passed away. I couldn't imagine a Mad Max movie without Miller and that shows how special Miller is as an artist when no one could really replicate his style and success with this franchise
I just saw the movie today and watched Fury Road again after. I completely agree with you that this film simply switched places too much and could have benefited from LINGERING in either action pieces, character moments, or locations a little more to give more definition to the movie. I’ve seen a lot of praise from reviewers, rightfully so, and I admire your thoughtful criticism.
It doesn’t happen often, but I AGREED w/ all the major points you made. My gf disagreed and said she feels like they lacked on the ‘realism’ to make it look more like the old Mad Max film. Over all, it feels like they had 3 different movies in mind, and what we saw was a smash-up of the 3. I gave it a 7/10, and I still recommend ppl to check it out.
I think this movie will grow on you over time. It’s not the immediate, unstoppable adrenaline rush of FR, which a lot of people are looking for. It’s its own thing, different tempo, different narrative style. No two Mad Max films are the same, and that’s the beauty of this series!
I do admit this flick is not on par with Fury Road, does leak visuals of CGI evidently, has some slower scenes but I loved the twist of history of how Furiosa was born as a character and checking a bit more in depth the wasteland workings in a conflict fueled by a crazy biker lord character. And stil despite of the flaws it kept me glued to the screen, and believe me at almost 58 years old not many films can draw my attention to the end in this era of streaming.
Dude, your review is all over the place. I loved the movie, i already knew it was going to be tough to match Fury Road, but as a prequel , the pace was perfect. I do agree with the CGI point you brought up, still it didn’t take away from what I believe is a great film.
Chris Hemsworth being a villain in this movie is quire refreshing given his departure after doing Thor for such a long time. The underrated "Bad Times At The El Royale" proved how good he was as a villain and this movie just took his performance to a whole another level. I just love how he released his inner Australian here and turned it into maximum for this role 😂😂
Agreed with everything Dan said, The good and the bad. Chris Hemsworth stood out got me there's something absolutely captivating about his performance.
@@jennymcelligottI say keep the nose. It gave him character. Haha and his mustache. Like that whole look..with some of the expressions and line delivery he gave ...was just hilarious! And made You forget he was about to do something terrible any second. Great performance!
Totally agree I was really disappointed by the score. The only bits I liked were recycled from the Fury Road score. Composers now keep doing this droning, textural background music now instead of the bangers the used to make. Hans Zimmer went from tunes I could hum to stuff like Dune that's just droning sounds.
@@ZachBobBob I always liked Hans zimmer's scores way more than his post christopher nolan scores that everyone online loves to goggle over and say its the best score of all time. Last Samurai and the Lion King. Full stop.
@@marcochen9117 Yeah I agree. I won't say he's fallen off because he still makes scores I really enjoy, maybe he's just stretched too thin idk. But I do think he's started a bad trend with Hollywood soundtracks
I thought it was good but Fury Road is better. Hemsworth is fun, but I wish his conflict with Anya’s Furiosa was more prominent. He does some gnarly stuff to her near the end with no knowledge of who it is that he’s torturing. If he’d known, it would’ve made those scenes more intense.
Knowing that the first Dune and Mad Max Fury Road each won 6 Oscars (mostly in the technical categories and some people seemed to forgot that Fury Road took home 6 Oscars out of 10 nominations including a Best Picture nom) in their own award year, it'd be interesting to see how the award season goes next year for both of their follow ups, Dune Part 2 and Furiosa head to head in possibly achieving the same award success 🤔
I think Dune Part 2 is going to win more than Furiosa but i have a feeling that Furiosa might took Best Production Design and Best Editing. Then again, this is just a dumb prediction 😂
@@BankMoviegoer Shit, I forgot that Dune and Furiosa is from the same studio. I wonder which movie that Warner Bros will pushed more for it's award season
Quite a good watch, but I agree it probably tried too hard to connect the dots between the two films rather than writing a good story on its own. Since Furiosa was a fictional character, her background could have focused more on her history as an adult rather than having a third of the film about her as a child and played by a different actress, making the film look a bit disjointed. The jump between the child and a tough fighter was a bit sudden. The revenge was a little too much dragged out at the end, and Furiosa took no part in the fighting and only chased Dementus after the battle was won by Scrotus and Erectus. There was also no clear motive for her helping the women to escape, though of course we know that was the beginning of the next (actually previous) movie.
I don’t know if it was on purpose, but the CGI had a choppy frame rate a lot of the time that gave it a similar feel to the original Mad Max. Even if it was obviously not a practical effect, it almost made me give it a pass based on that
Completely disagree about not showing the us the war. Every segment in the movie is a complete story- Furiosa being kidnaped, taking control of gas town, etc. It would be out of place to show just *a* battle for the sake of action alone. That is also why I was genuinely surprised the movie was almost two and a half hours long, it flew by me.
Disappointed. I agree that with Dan that it lacks its own direction. And it makes the fatal error of “softening” the horrors of the Citadel as it was depicted in Fury Road. Almost like it needed to make Dementus the arch villain. I also agree making it more as a two hander outside of the Citadel would have helped (loved the opening sequence with Furiosa’s mom). Seeing so much of the War Boys and Imorten Joe’s crew felt too repetitive.
Honestly THANK YOU DAN. I’ve seen constant reviews from Chris Stuckmann, RLM, or other reviewers praising the hell out of this movie and your criticisms are exactly how I felt. It is by no means a bad movie, but it’s so slow, overlong, and not well developed enough to get these 4/5 star ratings or even being 90% on RT.
YES! I've been waiting for this review! So excited to see this, Fury Road is my favorite movie of all time and I am so ready to submerse myself in that world again. Thanks for the review, Dan, I am glad I watched this before going in as I think it will help temper my expectations and enjoy the movie on its own!
I may be an outlier here but i haven't seen Fury Road😅. And i went to see this movie purely for Anya Taylor-Joy, whose career I've started following since 2017's Thoroughbreds. All i knew going into this movie was its a wasteland, since ive seen Thunderdome. And that at some point Furiosa loses an arm because its shown on the poster. Anyways, I thought the film was wildly entertaining, and with nothing else to compare it too, it managed to keep me captivated and enthralled (despite the long run time). Maybe i benefited from going in "blind", but hopefully this movie finds a leg of success with returning fans and casual viewers. And im definitely hyped up to finally get around to Fury Road to see what exactly spawned the want/need for Furiousa. 🔥
Interesting to hear this perspective. If you feel like sharing after seeing Fury Road, I imagine folks would be curious what that viewing order was like. I think you're in for a treat; I'd love to erase my memory of Fury Road and see it again fresh.
I quote Pirates, "Take what you can; Give nothing back" If George Miller, or Wes Ball or anyone else this summer gets a movie released in theaters that's largely their vision, I'll call that a win.
Having watched this movie now, I agree with your review. When Furiosa is given a choice at the end of the first act, I understand why she made the choice she did from an emotional standpoint, but making the opposite choice would've been the better choice from an intellectual and story standpoint. After that scene, I still mostly enjoyed the movie, especially the third act, but I couldn't stop thinking about the movie we could've gotten.
I agree with you Dan. There were bits of Furiosa's growth that got glossed over that would have helped a lot. It would have done a lot for her character and origin story. Miller could have made this a two-parter, there's so much to cover and it felt too quick towards the end. It felt too split between Furiosa and giving back story to what already happened with Fury Road.
I believe why the movie is underperforming is that the first trailer that came out months ago.. the stunts and special effects looked like alot of the movie was green screened... this turned off alot of the audience.. thinking they are getting a mad max film that was mostly digital and not practical effects....which is not the case, when you watch the whole movie....
Unfortunately I have to disagree on the "great score", I found it quite uninspired. Disappointed also by the story, Furiosa was looking for redemption in Fury Road and we don't really get to know why, since she's not doing awful stuff because of Immortan Joe, but going through very tough times because of Dementus. Joe maybe should have been the villain of that movie. And not sure about her motivations in this movie, does she want to get revenge on Dementus or to go back to the Green Place ? Hard to know since she's barely talking. There were also very few lines from the main characters in Fury Road but the chase was non-stop, that does not work as well in this more classical movie in my opinion. On the plus side, the first chase and its atmosphere were very nice, like the others chases and battles. And great cast overall. As a huge fan of Fury Road, I knew Furiosa was not going to be as good and epic, but I think that a character like Furiosa deserved a better origin story, and I was overall disappointed by this movie.
Thank you for the review Dan. I do plan on seeing Furiosa but not this weekend. Over booked myself with work, errands and family stuff. Planning on seeing it next weekend. Looking forward to Charts on Tuesday.
Did you have a chance to see HOPE AND GLORY - A Mad Max Fan Film? 275 filmmakers from 5 continents gave their all with real stunts, a real orchestra and most importantly, real heart.
Things that stood out for me were the strange 1.25x normal speed scenes, was this just to reduce the run time slightly? The relationship between Pretorian Jack and Furiosa "ended" with no fanfare, I know that Furiosa is quite stoic but really? The oddest thing was playing clips of Fury Road at the end - I just didn't get that at all!!
Thanks for the review! Saw Furiosa last night and was so disappointed. It felt like a backstory outline and not a fully cooked script or story. Visually if the stunts were real I couldn’t tell, bc the cgi and artificially sped up scenes in post made everything look so fake. Mad Max, The Road Warrior, and Fury Road remain Masterpieces for me, but I don’t think I’ll rewatch Furiosa for a long time. I think Dementus became more interesting in scenes around the plush bear. I would have been interested to see his full backstory from family man to wasteland leader play out along Furiosa’s eventually overlapping to see how the wasteland could turn one evil vs the other into a hero.
I liked the film, not as good as fury road but worth your time. I think if 20 minutes were cut and some of the dialogue written is a bit eye rolling bad, and editing and pacing I wish had been applied better. I think it would have been better. The kid part needed to be edited and get to Anya’s part.
I dont understand why ppl are bitching about CGIs.. The cgis were seamlessly integrated into the film. This movie imo was the best movie in a long time, and may even top FR due. to its epic storytelling, the wide angle shots, the music.. it's an experience.. and do not compare this Dunes or others that insult the audience's intelligence.. The backstory, the why's all answer every character's beings.. I love this movie! Going back for a 2nd time
This film had impossible expectations to luve up to with how incredible Fury Road was, and while I still enjoyed Furiosa with tempered expectations I couldnt help but be a little disapointed. All your criticisms are very valid: the pacing is rough due to the structure, the CGI is noticible at some times, and I wish there was more action. Furiosa's lack of dialogue also bothered me since it felt out of character for her conpared to Theron's performance. That being said, its still a strong film with some great action (when it happens), visuals, and strong performances from Anya Taylor Joy, Alyia Browne that carry the torch from Theron's powerhouse portrayal, as well as Chris Hemsworth. Also, the ending is really strong even despite its lack of action.
Furiosa is like Thunderdome to Fury Road's Road Warrior. It's a more complex and messier film but I think it will stand the test of time and I like it more than Thunderdome. Unlike Thunderdome, Furiosa didn't have the production problems and it's 100% George Miller.
Actually Furiosa did have production problems and most of it were in the pre production process. George Miller had a problem with his salary for Mad Max Fury Road and Furiosa that Warner Bros offered him so he decided to delayed the project to work on Three Thousand Years Of Longing. He even filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros for an Mad Max Fury Road's unpaid salary which caused the Furiosa movie to be delayed for several years
Saw it tonight and I actually really loved the broader storytelling aspect. I can see Dan’s point, but some of the things that detracted from his enjoyment actually added to mine
Furiosa was so good. Honestly, the only problem I had with the movie was that she stopped shaving her head. Also, I feel like they didn't need to recast Furiosa. The Mad Max cameo actually suggests that this movie's ending is only a few months before Fury Road. Though the tree does make it at least a year before Fury Road. So the cameo was a little weird.
Going off the ages of the actresses its about 10 years before Fury Road. Not sure how old young furiosa is supposed to be. But I would guess 8 to 10. It is stated as being 15 years after that the climax of the film is happening. And Charlize was 10 years older than Anya when she filmed Fury Road. So if we want to compress time a bit. Maybe 5 years between Furiosa and Fury Road (ignoring the closing scene).
I also felt that the film slogged around with its narrative, even though Anya and Chris were giving great performances. A lot of the beats didn't land.
You are so lucky to have so many sponsorships man on 167K subs, you might think I am sarcastic but I am not, you are the kind of guy that has true influence.
I gotta respectfully disagree. It’s there, oh yeah, it’s there. George ticked every box. He did it all here. The cast is full-throttle. I could write paragraphs but this just blew me away and is almost tied with Dune 2 for me this year.
I haven't seen any of the Mad Max films, but wanted to check this one out. The movie itself, I enjoyed. The theater experience was awful. Bad enough that I probably won't go see any movie this summer other than Deadpool, and even that, I'm trying to figure out if it's better to go opening weekend when the crowd will be excited and hopefully a decent audience, or waiting until like a Wednesday matinee when there may be less people.
I think you were too harsh. For me this is a see it now and a standout candidate for best movie of the year. Fury road is a 10/10 this is an 8.5/10 still fantastic
Exactly right, people need to get out and support this movie! I was disappointed by how empty the theatre was when I saw it, I hope people aren't being put off by picky reviews. This movie is head and shoulders above most of the junk Hollywood puts out these days.
Man, Dan and I are totally aligned on this one. The only disagreement we have is that I think Hemsworth has shown tremendous range as Thor over the years, and a lot of that energy is what makes Dementus so great (even more so because the character deliberately plays on Thor, though more the mythological one). I wish I liked this movie more, but it hurts my love of Fury Road and makes so many prequel missteps.
I just watched the B&W version of Fury Road and WOW!!! It gave me a whole new appreciation for what was already a masterpiece. It's disappointing to hear Furiosa is lacking, though it's understandable considering how long it took Fury Road to finally get made (more time for Miller and co. to work on pre-production, work out glitches, and fine tune every aspect).
I don’t agree with the take on this movie but I SOOO appreciate you actually explaining why you think Fury Road is a better movie, something other critics are not explaining at all.
I have read the other reviews, most critics can agree that Fury Road is a better movie than Furiosa. I guess, they just don't wanna compare it way too much because it'll likely detriment Furiosa's quality on being on its own. And that's what I've been trying to do in reviewing this movie because I knew it was never going to reach Fury Road's level (and I don't think that it should be)
@@Erasureeraser But I also think the movie is different enough to not be easy to actually compare so a lot of people just say “not as good as Fury Road”. What Dan said though was that it didn’t have the same pace (I forget exactly what wording he used) that worked so well with Fury Road. Which is something I don’t necessarily agree with cuz I feel the movie keeps it’s own version of that pace for a much bigger story. But it’s much more understandable when explained.
I think you nailed it. I agree, the film was best when it was doing more its own thing. The war rig scene seemed unnecessary and not as good as Fury Road. And now I realize that might be because of the different cinematographer. Interesting. I also agree that it was missing some focus.
Enjoying the show, keep up the good work. Speaking of good work, don’t forget about that Picard season 3 review. I have watched your interview with Terry a few times.
I don’t know what cut of Fury Road you saw that included seeing Gas Town and the Bullet Farm already, cause they weren’t in the cut I’ve been watching since 2015. They were mentioned, but never actually ventured to.
This review makes me think of some of the impressions people had of The Two Jakes when comparing it to Chinatown. Many people never realized The Two Jakes even exists.
Test will be in a couple years (when expectations level out) and watching them back to back and see if Fury Road feels like a sequel... rather than always labeling this as a prequel
I dont think people on the interwebz have watched the movie and are simply judgmental just for the heck of it. Furiosa is a cinematic masterpiece that has left me speechless! The time and patience one has to dedicate their life, in making a lifetime work, coupled with an unquenchable thirst to provide sheer awe and cinematic brilliance technically and emotionally, stands out at every single minute throughout the movie. Apocalyptic genres are quite easy to enact, since they require an astute understanding of how humans operate on baseline consciousness. George Miller did a fantastic job at delivering this exact sentiment. I am overall pleased with the aesthetic cinematic treatment compared to its predecessor for continuity and not overdoing with CG. Dramatic pacing and character introduction is given justice with sufficient screen time to develop their story arcs and finale plot. The wasteland is merciless and spares nobody. Flawless execution 10/10.
@@Thomas_Esson Firstly I gave a brief movie review and I didn't dismiss anything. Stop projecting your insecurities onto other people, think what you are typing. Secondly, watch the movie bro.
I feel like this movie had a lot less music in it and maybe that's because junkie XL wasn't in it or something? It's not necessarily bad but it did stand out to me that like my God this movie is so without music
This movie does everything that a good prequel should do. It gives depth and development to a character or movie that we saw before. And this leads into Fury Road so nicely that I don’t think I’m going to ever watch them on their own again. Furiosa is like the first two acts and Fury Road is the explosive third act action sequence that resolves everything.
Agree with a lot of your review but you were even still a tad generous. It's disappointing, unfocused and WAY too long. It drags and the ending just kind of peters out. I saw it an advanced screening, packed IMAX theater with people dressed up and really excited for it. No one made a peep except for the occasional sounds of snoring (no joke). Maybe 5 people clapped when it ended. I'm thinking the law of high expectations hurts it. It's not all bad like you said. The action scenes still work and I think it looks great despite the cgi but I just can't recommend it to anyone. I think it'll open big then drop like a stone on word of mouth.
I hope, WB is on board for the next film "The Wasteland". Really like to see, where Miller can take the character in a new storyline. Really enjoyed "Furiosa" as much as "Fury Road", really liked that this new prequel was more toned down with car chases and gave some time to focus on the main character as a whole.
I think it's interesting you say they should have fleshed out Jack and Furiosa's relationship, when this movie is making a point to mirror Max and Jack's interactions with Furiosa as if to underscore that the filmmakers are saying Max and Furiosa were in the same type of relationship.
I saw this yesterday (May 23) and I don't know why but something didn't click for me. I loved Fury Road, to be clear, so I actually had high hopes for this, but something felt off. I think it falls into the "Rogue One" trap of telling a story that's best left to the imagination. Not that bad, as R1 has logic leaps I still don't understand. Here I think I'm just underwhelmed. I will admit though that the last shot of Chris Hemsworth's character gave me shivers in a good way.
Personally, I preferred the mystique of the characters like Furiosa, among others, in Fury Road. I used to make up my own headcannon about her backstory. Like, why is this hot woman not one of Immortan Joe's wives? My thought was she was probably infertile, either from birth (nuclear wasteland and all, it makes sense) or from complications from giving birth to one of Joe's babies. Then she was cast aside like a dirty rag and she had to work her way up somehow to become his Imperator. To me, it makes more sense than her (spoiler) escaping without anyone noticing for many years and secretly cosplaying as a boy. Joe sicced his entire army to retrieve the wives in Fury Road and I'm supposed to belive he didn't even care enough that one of his future brides went missing to send a search party up and down the Citadel? Also, there's no way nobody suspected Furiosa was a girl. Anya looks and walks like a girl even though her hair is hidden. It killed the realism for me. I still like the actions and techniques Miller employed in the movie but story-wise, this movie was not needed.
No where near to Fury Road. Not a tight coherent whole like Fury Road. This one had a thin plot. extremely thin. Spread even more thin by the chapters.
Surprised Dan didn't enjoy this more. Was every bit as good as Fury Road for me, albeit while telling a much larger operatic story. Every frame felt like a masterclass in film making. Anya, Hemsworth, child Furiosa actress and the other Praetor were all absolutely sublime. Miller, in my opinion, is one of the last true visionaries.
When did we “see gas-town and bullet-farm” in Fury Road? You said we already say those locations in Fury Road, send the time stamp please…because we did not see those places. We saw gas-town on the horizon but that was it.
I loved this movie. I can see how some would be disappointed by the lack of high-octane action compared to the first movie. But I was transported to another place. Frankly, this is what I wanted (and didn't get) out of the Dune movies. A beautiful aesthetic, great world-building. But unlike with Dune, I was actually pretty invested in the characters.
we don't always agree on our movie reviews, but this one we certainly have nearly complete overlap-- could not agree more with your issues (and also the things done well)
I think when people were calling for/speculating on a Furiosa spin-off movie, they were assuming it would be with Theron as her portrayal was what wowed everyone. It's interesting they decided on this story instead.
I loved fury road, but I found furiosa to be disappointing. I love slow burn movies (recently really enjoyed “I saw the TV Glow”), but for a mad max movie with very little dialogue, it needs to have a faster pace. Similar to you, I found Furiosa to be too slow, and I found myself bored. Ironically, I decided to do a double feature, and I watched Furiosa right after I watched “Challengers,” and I was surprised with how much more thrilling Challengers was when compared to Furiosa. I was shocked with how much of a high/rush “Challengers” gave me. I was expecting Furiosa, as the second half of a double feature, to continue that adrenaline rush, but it just felt like a slog. I would never have predicted Challengers to be more of a shot in the arm than Furiosa, but it most definitely was. If you take anything from this comment, please see challengers before it leaves theaters. We need more movies like it
I just saw the movie and waited a bit cause I saw it's underwhelming and I never (usually) disagree with Dan but idk how much deep personal connection with the character could effect how good I feel it is. I think it's a must watch in a summer of mehhhh.
This was so much better than 'On the border between It's Fine and it's good" to me, but maybe that's because I haven't seen Fury Road since 2015. Time for a rewatch.
4:20 i dont agree Dan, the space where Fury Road take's place, is Furiosa's place, even during Fury Road, it wasnt a mad max movie, it was a Furiosa movie. So connecting the dots in this prequel was imperative, it's what prequel does, but it also expands the universe. We should have seen more of the green place tho but maybe the are saving that for a Theron's Furiosa sequel? please? anybody??
When you opened about seeing the movie, I almost immediately bailed. But then you began the review and boy was it apparently insightful, thoughtful, and in equal measure laudatory and critical without being judgmental or unintelligent. I reserve my judgement until I see the film, which I’ll now do, you influencer, you. And I agree. Fury Road is a once in a century kinetic masterpiece and Theron was astounding. Her brazen life from the horrors and exhilaration of her own family tragedy (a mother every it of Warrior as Furiosa) to best of both genders’ androgynous beauty to acting and physical prowess that was razor sharp, she’s the shit. Little Miss Horse-eyes ain’t gonna cut it.
I really liked this one. I was surprised how many scenes the younger actress was in. She did a great job. Was waiting for the arm to go, a la, Hot Tub Time Machine but even then the scene was shocking.
2 hours 28 minutes? Ugh! I was considering seeing it in theaters, but that’s a long time to devote to a movie. It would have to be a great movie for me to sit for nearly 3 hours, and it doesn’t sound like this one is. That’s disappointing.
To me the relationship between "Furiosa" and "Fury Road" is like that between two episodes in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The two movies have different things to accomplish in the context of a much longer narrative. Just like one could say that different parts of "Fury Road" have different things to accomplish within the context of a single movie. The storyline about Nux, for example, which may seem more important to some than to others. Half of "Fury Road" is driven by Furiosa's search for the Green Place. Part of the job of a prequel might therefore be to show why that place is worth risking everything for. At least to her: when it turns out it no longer exists, it is she who is heartbroken, not the others, who have no idea what she's looking for. But the quest is not just to find the place, and live in it as if the fifteen intervening years had never happened. Furiosa's purpose is broader: it is to give a home and a new future to the "breeders" of Immorten Joe. It's for them that she is prepared to face Immorten's wrath, be pursued to the death, and if need be sacrifice her life. Max only gets accidentally involved in this plot. He has his own unresolved past, but it doesn't drive the plot of "Fury Road". The only agency he has, in a world he barely understands, is to do what it takes just to stay alive at any one moment. Only Furiosa has real agency: all others react to the sequence of events that she triggers. It's the memory of the world she lost, and her vision of a new future for the "breeders" and herself, that are the real engine behind "Fury Road". The prequel focuses on that background, and should be judged on the terms of what that background needs.
I felt like the Pretorian Jack character was introduced too quickly and I didn't feel like I connected to him enough, given his importance to the narrative. I needed to feel their connection a bit stronger before they were captured.
This movie is the definition of: "You will hear it has flaws and it will stop you from watching it but years later when you finally watch it you will think to yourself: 'Why were people even complaining? I wish I had just seen it when it was new!'"
Agree
Fully agreed. Just saw it and it was great. Way better than it's trailers.
Yes, some of the CGI was annoying, plus it could have been 20 minutes shorter, but aside from these two facts the movie just delivered on all ends: story, score, sound, editing, acting, action choreography...you name it.
I have to admit though, that one long set piece on the war rig with the flying dudes was exactly why I saw this movie and I freaking loved it
It allowed me to live 2 hours in the Mad Max world! It was awesome and worth it. George Miller is a Master Mind!
Yes!!! It is such a vision that only he can deliver. It's like beautiful chaos.
I think I need to go see it again. Hahah
Have you seen HOPE AND GLORY, the Mad Max fan film?
@@derbundestrainertrainer2993 No, but I'll check it out! Thank you!
He did Babe?!
@@hothotheat3000 No, he co-wrote it. He directed the less well received sequel.
@@hothotheat3000 He only directed the sequel, in the first movie, he was just the writer and producer
Some how Ive read this same comment in Chris stuckmann review
Chris Noonan was the director of Babe while George Miller was the producer. George Miller directed Babe: Pig in the City. As well as 4 Mad Max movies, 2 Happy feet movies and Furiosa, he directed Lorenzo's Oil, The Witches of Eastwick, and Three Thousand Years of Longing. He also directed the 4th segment in Twighlight Zone the Movie.
Does George Miller have it in him to make it epic at 79 years old?
Yes. Yes, he does.
Absolutely he does!😊
Ppl just need to give this man money and the green light to make the other chapters in his story.
@@Starr_Apathy People just need to line up and see this one. I'm not worried about more sequels. Gotta appreciate this one itself.
Exactly this!
Yeah, but the CGI was distractlingly out of place.
Edit: and given the slower pace of this movie, it really stuck out

You're just a whiny craphead
The best thing I can say about this movie is that while it is a wildly different film from Fury Road I really like that because at the same time it enhances Fury Road even more. Furiosa takes its time more, sets up characters and lore and so now when I go into Fury Road again I have a better understanding of the world and I’ll appreciate it more.🙏🏻
Same Fury Road feels like a big climax now
How is it wildly different if many are saying ti's a ripoff just minus the actual lead character?
@@Music-vr7sz who is saying it’s a rip off??
Not gonna lie, I LOVED Furiosa… I thought it was like, -the perfect “companion piece” to Fury Road❤
If people don’t go and watch this movie, this type of movie will go extinct. Studios will only greenlight comic book movies from now on
This type of movie is unique to George Miller.
Chris Hemsworth was really great in Bad Times at the El Royal as a Charles Manson look a like villain.
Even in Spiderhead he gives weird villain vibes.
I think this movie will grow on you over time. It’s not the immediate, unstoppable adrenaline rush of FR, which a lot of people are looking for. It’s its own thing, different tempo, different narrative style. No two Mad Max films are the same, and that’s the beauty of this series!
I should've attached this to my other comment😅. Always love hearing your reviews, and reports. 💜
“Oh, what a glorious day!”
Sounds exactly like *PLANET OF THE APES!*
Dude, your review is all over the place. I loved the movie, i already knew it was going to be tough to match Fury Road, but as a prequel , the pace was perfect. I do agree with the CGI point you brought up, still it didn’t take away from what I believe is a great film.
Wasn't prepared for that 'Hot Fuzz' reference 🎬😂
I know! My wife and I use that one frequently
🙂🤨Chris went a little “Wolf Creek” nasty in this film.
This review just made me want to rewatch Fury Road
Agreed with everything Dan said, The good and the bad. Chris Hemsworth stood out got me there's something absolutely captivating about his performance.
For me both Anya & Chris were both stand out.
@@amy_yoshikawa Really needed more ATJ in the film and having scenes where she could truly perform. Hemsworth was fun but I kept seeing Josh Brolin.
I wish they hadn’t put a prosthetic nose on him. It was definitely distracting. That being said I loved his performance. He was obviously having fun

Fury Road's soundtrack was just so great that this one made it feel like Junkie XL just phoned it in...
I remember the heavy hitters Fury Road and the Revenant losing visual effects to ex machina.
Dune: Part Two seem to be the front runner in my eyes, but I guess we'll see which movie WB backs more when the time comes...
Did you really just paste your comment from Stuckman's video?
@@BankMoviegoer Shit, I forgot that Dune and Furiosa is from the same studio. I wonder which movie that Warner Bros will pushed more for it's award season
Great review. Your point about the movie checking boxes in the lore and not blazing its own trail hit home for me.
I appreciate your clear and honest review. I understand where you're coming from with your criticisms. I personally really enjoyed it.
Couldn’t agree with you more on all the points you made. Great review!
The scenes at the end was supposed to connect the two films.
There's lots of sped up stuff in Fury Road too, it's just a stylistic choice
Going back for a 2nd time
It's so good, you can take a 30 minute nap in the middle and not miss anything.
He even filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros for an Mad Max Fury Road's unpaid salary which caused the Furiosa movie to be delayed for several years
How is this a mad max saga if Max isn't in it ?
@@apocalypsepowhave you seen the movie?
This movie is dark and intense as helll… not perfect, but is more dynamic and interesting than most films you will see
I think you explained it well: it was too episodic, too many parts disconnected from each other. Great film, but I enjoyed Fury Road much more
I also felt that the film slogged around with its narrative, even though Anya and Chris were giving great performances.
I'm coming back to the movie theater this week for a second ride. I know I won't get tired of it.
He missed such a trick the way that first villain thumbnail pops up and he doesn’t lead in with ‘…and eventually…she uh finds Jesus?!’ 😆

The movie had no big climatic battle. The final scene between Anya Taylor and Hemsworth continued to drag for so long that it became boring.
More like 'Worldbuilding Around Furiosa: A Mad Max Silmarillion'
Very excited for your review, Dan
It really is lol
@@BankMoviegoer honestly would have made a great limited series, tho I doubt the studio would pay for it if it weren't a movie
I think I'm one of the few people who actually likes this movie more than Fury Road. Thanks for the review!
"A pretty good movie that's living in the shadow of a masterpiece"
THAT'S IT!
Disagree strongly with that, I feel it was an excellent film in its own right. Extremely entertaining
Ironic that you’re saying it has a thin plot while praising Fury Road, which has the worlds thinnest plot lol.
We need more movies like it
That final tennis match in Challengers. Gotta give it to the male folks though; y’all know how to do friendship…
I just saw the movie and waited a bit cause I saw it's underwhelming and I never (usually) disagree with Dan but idk how much deep personal connection with the character could effect how good I feel it is. I think it's a must watch in a summer of mehhhh.
This review hits it exactly what i thought after seeing it.
If I haven't watched the original in 9 years, would you recommend rewatching Fury Road first?
