Lets be honest GTA San Andreas map is the biggest achievement in map design ever. With it's limmited tech they created a map that feel more alive, unique, huge in scope (even in much smaller in reality), and just fun to explore, than most other great open world games. Sure GTA IV and V both have incredible maps (well GTA V has amazing locations, and Los Santos is perfect but the overall map shape and how elements are place is actually a huge step down), Mafia 3 and Watch Dogs had great cities, and Ghost Recon Wildlands managed to create huuuge map that doesn't feel like randomly generated, but San Andreas did all that with vastly more primitive tech.
As a bonus i would say when it comes to cities themselfs probably my favourite one from 6th gen was Istambul from Driv3r (the remaining two cities were also great).
And as a side note when it comes to map design in general i also love S.T.A.L.K.E.R, most Ubisoft games (strictly map design), some City Interactive shooters (Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 has top tier map, and both Contracts games are also awesome in this regard, even Enemy Front had really good map design), and pretty much every single Hitman game. Ok and every Gothic game XD

To say the gta 3 map doesn't "introduce much that feels fresh" ingornes the fact that when it was released most of it was new to the fans. It laid the ground work for other gta games that naturally built upon it. But then I was a kid when it came out so I might be bias

GTA III is among the most groundbreaking games ever. Everythings, and I mean everything felt fresh in that game. Then Rockstar went on and achieved that freshness two more times (although, I think GTA San Andreas felt more fresh than Vice City). PS2 and its exclusives were goated.

I appreciate what GTA3 did. But of the 5 3D GTAs. It has by far the most issues and the map is the weakest. Yes it was incredible for its time. But when looking at what map is the best, what map came first shouldnt really be a factor.

@@Me-ui1zy Fair enough, I do think that GTA SA map is one of the biggest achievements in videogames history and it's better than GTA III's (I'm not entirely sure about Vice City map though).I just wanted to point out that GTA III map was something unseen before and one of the most influential ever created in videogames, therefore saying that it doesn't introduce anything original sounded like a bit of a stretch to justify the ranking.

People love criticizing GTASA for having wasted space, but I believe that it did not waste any space at all. Vice City and Liberty City were cities, but San Andreas is a state, so Rockstar made sure people felt like they were going across states when on the highway. Also the fact that there's small details and cities between major ones makes the map far from wasted

For the time, it was a great technical achievement. Rockstar made it for the PS2 and fitting all that map space onto a PS2 disc and making it run well was very impressive. SA has some empty spots but the lighting and atmosphere makes it feel desolate and eerie. A game doesnt need missions and NPCs in every single spot on the map to feel well-crafted, and San Andreas is proof of that. One criticism of SA is the edges of the map just end before water rather than endlessly going on outside of the playable area. It would be more immersive to me if there were endless mountains and desert above Las Venturas, Bone County, and Tierra Robada. The ocean should be on the coast of Los Santos and San Fierro but not outside Venturas

You said that gang tags are unique for Los Santos and you are right, but San Fierro and Las Venturas have its own unique collectables; San Fierro has photoshots and Las Venturas has horseshoe collectables. So San Fierros photoshots are unique because this is only time we saw this tipe of cellectebles.

GTA 3 Map - Dark & Fun, But Brought Down By Shoreside Vale
GTA Vice City Map - Compact, Vibrant & Overall Extremely Memorable, Except the Airport, That part is a pain to get around at...
GTA San Andreas - Home. Basically a flawless map (a nostalgic lie) and a testament to a time where the consumer experience came first, 3 cities, 3 different color schemes & albeit small in comparison to todays maps it was made to feel much bigger with limited hardware...
The HD Maps to me feel a bit 'meh' in comparison to what the 3D maps were. I mean, I do like Liberty in GTA IV a lot, it feels a lot bigger due to the height of the buildings and has a lot of memorable stuff scattered around. But holy hell does the Los Santos in GTA V feel tiny at times, to me it even feels less special than the San Andreas version and that one is an actual miniature...

GTA 3 map is under appreciated. I think the way it was able to pull off multiple layers of roadways that weave on top and under each other is actually very impressive considering the hardware at that time. I also love how the underground tunnels create a unique sense of scale when you realize you're circumventing the ocean that divides the islands.
Also, there's a separate physical space for subway tracks that actually exist, and you can drive your car around it to reach the other islands.
I love how confusing it was to drive around, especially the second and third island. It makes me feel more immersed as I need to fully digest the city layout to a find my optimal route.
I completed gta 3 for the first time only in 2021, and I was more engaged with it than gta 4 tbh.
For my ranking, I'd go with this:
    1. San andreas
    2. GTA 3/LCS
    3. GTA V
    4. GTA IV
    5. GTA VC/VCS

Kinda disagree with the score on las venturas. I think the casinos are a fun little addition, but I wouldn't really rate them much higher than the car crusher that you mentioned at the beginning. They're a nice little thing and fun for a couple minutes but it wears off quickly and all the casinos are pretty much the same, they just look differently. Like, it doesn't matter if you go into the sphinx one or the castle one, they're still using the exact same mechanics and offer the same gambling options. So, like, to me it feels a bit as if you had like 5 differently themed car crushers all next to each other. Fun and interesting for about 5 minutes and afterwards I'd just drive by without even really paying it any attention. Overall, I'd say my personal favorite is los santos but in terms of score I'd say San Fierro should probably get the highest score because it also introduces the street racing side missions (which in my opinion are way better than the casinos because you're actually doing stuff instead of just putting money on the table and hoping that rnjesus will give you more money back)

GTA VC again had such a strong start on the first Island, then you get the mansion and move over to the second Island. However similar to VC, the story just loses focus, it feels like you're doing busy work on the second Island getting money to buy property. It all feels like a side mission, then all of a sudden the main story kicks in and it's like two missions only. They made a big deal over this Lance guy, but why should I care about him? He just turns up and acts weird the whole time.

I think you made a very compelling argument for Las Venturas. It's kind of sad because that's the island I probably spent the least amount of time on in any of the games, and I suspect that's true for a lot of people, because no one seems to talk much about it. But they really did a terrific job on it. I also appreciate the small towns scattered throughout the map. It adds an underappreciated variety and sense of scale. As much as I love Vice City and am excited to see their modern interpretation, this has me kind of wishing the next GTA would center around Las Venturas and the general SW US.
In terms of games as a whole, truly San Andreas was a master class in map ambition and design (especially given the time). It almost felt like three games rolled into one. I think they did a great job on the GTA V map, but the game is so long in the tooth now that we desperately need a new location. GTA IV falls into the same category as GTA III IMO--it has a great gritty atmosphere which I respect, but I don't care to spend much time there at all. I'd be okay if GTA never returns to Liberty City. It has been done, and very well, but unfortunately it's just not that exciting in theme.

Then we got the docks that look different from rest of the city, and then there's the airport, military base.
Compared to the first island which is just beach, hotels and the whole thing is just a fancy place.

Im from las vegas so i have a lot of fun exploring las venturas and there are iconic locations in the city that only locals remember like the baseball stadium and the historical westside (the apartments and neighborhoods west of the strip) easily my favorite GTA city. I dont like how you have to make it 3/4 through the game to get there

San Andreas. While it has some vast empty areas between the cities, for its time it still holds up very well. Has three major cities. Even ~10 years later, GTA V only had one major city. Imagine GTA V with San Fiero and Las Venturas? Would easily be first. Yes, GTA V looks prettier and is probably larger, but that's the nature of progress. GTA III map is a bit less pretty than Vice City, San Andreas improves upon Vice City, GTA IV is a noticable graphical upgrade over San Andreas, and GTA V improves on IVs visuals. Technology is better. Graphics are better. But San Andreas pushed the envelope farther than any of these other games. It's far more ambitious. To compete, GTA V would have to have all of the state of San Andreas, and GTA VI would have to have all of the Eastern Seaboard.

GTA San Andreas' map was my personal favourite, the variety of environments to 3 fairly large cities with different activities to do in all 3, even down to the little towns scattered in between the cities, it was perfect.

We need a gta maps tier list, if I had too make one
S - East Vice City, Algonquin, Portland, Los Santos (OG)
A - Dukes/Broker, West Vice City, Las Venturas, Blaine County
B - Los Santos (HD), Staunton Island
    C - Alderney, San Fierro
    D - Bohan, Shoreside Vale

San Andreas was the best hands down. If GTA V was just the San Andreas map in the Gta map quality it would be the best game ever made. It would also be laggy for sure though 💀

I sure hope they bring back Las Venturas in GTA 6. The desert 🏜️ and the unique purple night skies 🌌 with modern day Las Vegas it would be Rockstar Games biggest most appreciated game ever made💎 It would be perfect with their Project Americas idea. We'll just have to wait and see. I'm ready for GTA6✌️🌴🌅🩷

GTA3 had a really strong first Island, but the second Island just becomes boring and it's where I always quit. The third island has barely any missions, most of them you get on the second Island and have to keep traveling over.

If we are talking islands, actual islands, a couple of the middle Islands of Vice City are actually really, really unremarkable. I'm going to say it, Leaf Links is not more interesting than GTA 3's Portland Island, and no it's not a part of that first island, it's separated by water.
Also, Prawn Island and Starfish Island are separate as well, why did you include all these with the first island of Vice City??

I never liked GTA 3's Liberty City. The road density is very low, leaving huge blocks of building with no back alleys or streets going through them. Lots of buildings look very rushed and oversimplified and often times they don't even have windows on all sides. Off-road parts (grass & cliffs) have so little polygons that they have a very artificial feel and look to them. Shoreside Vale especially feels very rushed with it's absolutely nonsensical road layout and lack of details/variety. At times it does catch that gloomy vibe they were aiming for.
I guess some of this can be attributed to the fact that it was a fairly early PS2 title so they couldn't utilize the full potential of the hardware yet. And I guess they were also just learning to design maps and developing their engine at that point. Vice City was released a year later on the exact same hardware and already had 2x the details with more back alleys and streets - all while boasting higher-res and more detailed textures and models, creating a very believable illusion of 80s Miami. San Andreas again took things further, looking even better and having even bigger, and importantly, more dense cities with more recognizable landmarks.
As a game, Vice City is my favourite since I grew up watching Miami Vice re-runs on TV. As far as maps go, San Andreas and especially Las Venturas is my favourite to explore in the series. Another big reason why I never found GTA 3 that impressive was that I got Mafia for PC before GTA 3 and was spoiled by the way better graphics and more believable city design.
