Same like me! But during covid it’s quite empty, so why spend extra money when you can lay down in economy? For the price of 1 business class ticket you get 3-5 in economy!

I agree with the opinion on the dimly lit part, i one departed from gate 56 or 57 on an air france flight so yeah it is dimly lit
All the action of the flaps - I think you have a penchant for them. I agree with you about this majestic bird, it's huge and quite an experience to fly. The double aisles are a treat. I flew it to London and enjoyed every minute, walking to stretch my legs ; I feel it's size and weight makes it more amenable to deal with turbulence. Thanks for the chevron information. It's really sad that Boeing has almost shut down production of this aircraft and airlines are diverting them to cargo ops. Thanks for the great scenes enroute. Looking forward to seeing more of your travels.

Hopefully I get to fly one again soon. I read somewhere Lufthansa is bringing back some B747-400 so I hope to catch one of those.

The crew has a camera to monitor the main landing gear. I agree, long aircraft must be challenging to taxi especially at particular airports.

Great video! As someone who lived in north Jersey and frequented Newark airport for years, I could not agree more with you. Newark’s terminal B is a terrible gateway terminal.
I know that the new terminal A is scheduled for completion sometime early to mid next year and will be a super modern upgrade to the current cramped and antiquated one. I don’t know what plans the Port Authority of NY/NJ has for terminal B, but I would think that it’s possible a modernization of it may be on the horizon, especially with the existing terminal A closing, this may open up space for B to be expanded.
FYI, at 9 minutes you are close to Connecticut but you were technically still over Westchester County NY and below was new Tappan Zee bridge (Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge)

@@TheLayoverAviation thank you for your kind words! Up until 2016 I lived in New Jersey all of my life so I’m very familiar with that part of north Jersey and the NYC area.
I also must say you’re very fortunate to have traveled on the 747 as so many airlines have retired then off from passenger use and most only do cargo duties. The last time I was on one was in 1984, a United 747 from Newark to Chicago if you can believe that!

Lufthansa is currently the easiest airline to fly a B747 on.
The B747-8 indeed has redisigned wings. The winglet is gone and the same engines as on the B787 are installed.
The spoilers look tired but that’s due to them being dirty, happens a lot! It’s just some grease and dirt accumulating.

Only one choice for main selection for your meal? Wow, the service has truly diminished on Lufthansa which always had excellent meals. Hopefully this was only due to cost cutting during the pandemic. Whenever I have flown them prior to pandemic, the food service was excellent in economy..and even better in Business class.

I read somewhere an expert explaining that water reservoir on airplanes are not the cleanest, therefore, avoiding drinks prepared with plane water (tea, coffee) is a good thing to do. Better choosing bottled liquids.

The water resevoirs are installed in a complicated place to clean, but so are the pipes to our houses.
In my opinion, it’s not really worth thinking much about it or it will give you a headache.
Do you think they exchange you pillows and blankets in hotels? No, just the cover..
And I doubt the showers get scrubbed daily, so got knows what you are standing on.
I had to stop thinking about all that and just enjoy!
Never got sick from plane liquids :)
Did that kid not stop talking throughout the flight? Lufthansa are operating the beautiful A340 again so another 4 engine jet around for a while longer, Air Belgium and Edelweiss also still flying the A340. Good report again you have tried Ryanair when next in Europe try Easyjet as a comparison.
He did stop, think I only heard them for breakfast.
Easyjet is on my radar soon. Have some Vueling flights yet to be edited too.

Try terminal c at Newark it much better than the other 2 terminals

Yea terminal C is much better and has international flights, but it is exclusive to United Airlines only

Yes, Rossiya and a few more carriers still operate the B747, but it’s getting hard and rare to find one..
But now Lufthansa flies the B747-400 to Dubai so I booked it😁
When was the flight?? Because I was at the Ikea plane spotting, and there was a Lufthansa 747-8 and a Scandinavian a330.

Was this on September 14th? I was on that Star Alliance livery A340 from FRA to DTW later that morning if it was the 14th.

It was not on the 14th, slightly before I think.
There are quite a few Lufty A340’s painted in the Star Alliance livery, all these are operated by crew under a different contract (Called Cityline), I believe.
@@TheLayoverAviation Yep, I’ve seen a few of the Star Alliance A340s in Detroit recently. I am far from an expert, but I think all of the A340-300s have been absorbed back into the regular LH fleet amidst the pandemic. I know that they’re a constant fixture at Detroit these days, while we used to see A340-600 and B747s in the pre-pandemic days.
Seat 38 on 747-8: note for myself since I'm looking for the best view on the 747.
Somehow,this A 321 mentioned to Lisbon still feels a bit unusual, considering the distance to fly.
Lisbon is a short flight from Frankfurt.. It’s hard to find big planes in Europe.
Iberia flies some from Heathrow to Madrid, Air Europa from Amsterdam.. The choice is very limited.

Question, being a former 30 year Intl. flight attendant who no longer flies. did they eliminate the onboard Duty Fee service? I thought it was a waste except for the airline's toys and gadges.

I did not see Duty Free advertised. Many airlines got rid of it, heavy carts burn more fuel I believe SAS or KLM said once, so sometimes it just not compensate.
If flying between Newark Airport and Frankfurt which one will you pick LH403 B747-830 or B777-322/er UA961? If Tour groups did their research right then its Lufthansa LH403 B747-8 over UA961 B777-300/er. The problem is on the Frankfurt side there has to be a 7.00-9.00 train towards Würzburg Hbf via Aschaffenburg Hbf Main Spessart Bahn
Tough choice! Airplane wise I would rather fly with a B747-8, it’s rare. It’s also slightly more comfortable.
But product choice wise United is better.. Specially in Business Class.
@@TheLayoverAviation you mean the Lufthansa flight LH403 which actually leaves EWR 2hr earlier than UA961 the B777-322/er. In terms of overall service Lufthansa will edge out United Airlines between Newark to Frankfurt Am Main LH402/LH403 or Newark to München Franz Joseph Strauß Airport LH412/LH413 A350-900. A better comparison might be B787-9 United Airlines vs Lufthansa B787-9 if it needs to do FRA/MUC-EWR.
How does the plane stops itself does the cockpit utilize the brake or do they depend on the flaps
Hey Stephen, there is many answers to that question. Do you mean on ground or in the air?

There are various ways of braking:
The main landing gear wheels have brakes installed, massive ones unlike in cars.
Besides these, you also have the engines that reverse the thrust, meaning instead of blowing the thrust backwards they change the flow forwards to brake.
Flaps, slats and spolers are aerodynamic brakes.
Some older/military aircraft even have parachutes installed!
Thanks for your excellent review. I have to take issue with your statement to avoid this airport. Unfortunately, international flights have to come thru Terminal B which will probably be redone when the new Terminal A opens. A new Terminal A is currently under construction and will be quite modern. Terminal C, which serves as a hub for United Airlines, is a huge, spacious, modern terminal with 68 gates. You would never know that if you only traveled through Terminal B.

The B747-8 was love at first sight though. But it feels like meeting your other half in the worse possible back alley bar in town.
Not so good aircrafts on Newark - Frankfurt flight has been my experience.
The sitting arrangement particularly is not comfortable in the rear section of the aircraft.

I decided to write captions instead of giving commentary as I believe part of the flying experience are the beautiful plane sounds, and not someone’s voice all the time. It’s what mostly bothered me in other video’s.
I might at some point perhaps do both, but not in the near future as so far the editing already takes me days.
