i would have definitely put this on the PHM remastered release. id like to see Trent polish release the demos, even if its just available as a download on the website.
This is still one of my fav NIN tracks to date. Raw and really just... retro perfection. Track hits the feels because that chorus as cheesy as it may sound... yeah. Maybe, just once.
sames! haha yeah i remember seeing it in an interview. Im not sure on what album but Trent credited the band as an inspiration for making him go heavier....
Daniel DeMayo Personally, I wouldn't of minded one pure 80's pop song on PHM, cause I'm sure if Trent put this out as a third single for the album, it would've been a HUGE hit on radio.
Dear members of Nine Inch Nails, if any of you are reading this right now, please release this track, and all of the other tracks that are unreleased. this is a great song.
I always imagine some cliche montage scene from an 80's teen movie about some kid who moves to some new town, has problems fitting in, has a few sympathizing friends but still has to work on "something" and things get better and better, etc. ..... I love it, but part of the reason is because it cracks me up. PART of the reason.
How is it that I've loved this music since I was 17 and I still every now and then find a song I didn't know about and it seems like every 5-10 years I find a song that just fits my life. The type of shit I'm going through that it just not only mimics it but it helps me get through it and then I remember it later on as I listen on remembering and hoping for a new or unheard one.
I think because musically it just doesn't really fit in the context of the Pretty Hate Machine album. Even though the subject matter is negative, the music is very upbeat and positive. I think the song "That's What I Get" fits PHM a little better musically and touches on similar subject matter, so maybe that's why that song made the final cut and this one didn't.
When this song started playing I thought it was an early version of Sin. The Beat, bass, and drum machine parts are similar. I wonder if that's how that track started as a re-working of Maybe Just Once but darker.
it feels almost like he wrote this during his tenure in the Exotic Birds. Personally, I appreciate the EB, and I loved the sounds, but I think they were kinda bad...mostly lyrically though. Imagination was probably the best song, and I was partial towards Everything Is Different Now. This is a good song. It is upbeat. That's why I figured it was possibly in his Exotic Birds days.
Circa 1987 when he had TVT Records telling him to emulate Information Society. Fortunately this is quite a bit better than InSoc, but it didn't survive the cut once Flood was involved.
@@sadmacuser don’t get me wrong (from my comment ten years ago), I adore Information Society. One of my favorite bands. I just didn’t think Trent needed to emulate their awesome style, he had his own!
@manman246 I actually really like it when the lyrics and music contrast that way. You really gotta listen to the lyrics to understand what they convey and it doesnt seem as obvious. A good method to keep things interesting.
Better than all other NIN songs. There's that energetic 80's spunk and clunk. Almost happy for once! Baby Rez still needed to tone down that whininess, though, good GOD. Can't STAND that shit. And I call myself a NIN fan? HAHAHA. Anyway, yeah, this is really fucking cute.
@prdgyair I have heard this story also yes. hehe When you think about it something must have happened.. PHM is alot darker than this track for sure... But I like it all... :D
@prdgyair It isn't aweful, it just shows where NIN came from.. PHM was going to be a pop album but Reznor decided otherwise and fucked everything up to what the album became.. I think I read it was to rebel against the record label.. don't quote me on that..hehe.. Personally I like this as it shows the song writing skills of Mr. Reznor back in the 80s...
1996
Me : "You guys should play Maybe just once'"
Chris Vrenna : "How bout 'Maybe just never'?"
Holy shit did this actually happen?

Maybe, just once.
Why the f*** haven't I heard this song before? Why isn't it on PHM? I mean...
This is frickin' awesome!!!
I agree
richard patrick prob. talked him out of it haha i know he couldn't stand ring finger and I don't even think thats really upbeat...
sames! haha yeah i remember seeing it in an interview. Im not sure on what album but Trent credited the band as an inspiration for making him go heavier....

Broken EP.

Trent's nod to his synthpop roots, nice!
Trents most 80s sounding song 🤘🤘🤘
You forgot the Purest Feeling single
SergeTheBlerge
Ever heard of Pretty Hate Machine?
Why not! It’s great. So is a lot of 80s music.

Holy shit you're right, totally has that vibe, now I wanna hear NIN cover "In the air tonight". LOL
So subtle and yet engaging with the candle you lit.

I love this. Gotta keep in mind. This is in the 80's.
This song is... So cute
This is flawless.
I wanna see this live
I love this song and cannot understand why Trent Reznor doesn't sing it live.
Deana Harding Probably because by now, it'd sound very cheesy by today's standards.
But yeah, I wouldn't mind him bringing it back either.
This live andhe hasdone last live which was great

It's different.. definitely more angsty. I wouldn't say better. I love insoc.

This should have made it to the album
Stock, Aitken and Reznor

Used to be my favorite song while driving out to the marsh during lunch in high school to get high. I think it still is. So F ing good.
It's a microphone, I believe. A condenser mic, if I remember correctly.
i want them to release this
Rickety-rickety Ross'd its on PB and on YT, so!?!
Sounds like a video game soundtrack. Castlevania. Cheesy 80s synth. Still good though.
I can't have been the only one to go google that...
the fucking Van Halen synths lmao
too bad this song is unreleased
Stock, Aitken, Waterman and Rezner
you should see his first band - the exotic birds :P
Bad-Ass!!
@prdgyair I have heard this story also yes. hehe When you think about it something must have happened.. PHM is alot darker than this track for sure... But I like it all... :D
@mishmoshable It's a microphone.
alternate universe nin
Kinda sounds like head like hole at the beginning
You can even sing the lyrics on top and it makes sense.

Shame, it's almost as if Trent wrote this five years too late.
this track reveals trent is a secret phil collins fan. interesting.
What movie was that audio from at the beginning?
Blades of turbine blended.
@NaturesGlory you obviously do not know his roots - influence and the exotic birds....
any way u could point me in the right direction on getting my hands on these? audio1977
this song reminds me of something pink floyd might do
Epic! 🖤
This is not a happy song btw
they're called bootlegs for a reason
