It's a very unique look into the sound building process for what would eventually become his first album. What strikes me is how much more 80's it sounds than what we got in 89. A lot of these sounds were on the way out, the quick strike tempo was going out of style, but from a band like NIN it's almost this charming preamble into what industrial would turn into. Trent's voice is so much more intense as where in the albums he's more variable imo.
Out of all of Trent's work done in the 1980s, this song's sound is the most indebted to the era in my opinion, not in a bad way, it's just unique considering what he would be known for going forward.
Ever look into slam bamboo? One of the bands Trent used to be in before NIN. Sounds a lot like this. Seriously. Very very similar but with a different singer. Trent was on keyboard. You might like that. I'm just discovering all these old bands Trent was in and all these demo tapes, unreleased songs now and I absolutely am in bliss cause I'm a hardcore NIN fan and this is like getting more and more songs.
@@lucifer2b666It’s been four years but do you have any favorites you’d recommend to use as jumping off points to get into his other stuff? I’ve only listened to nin, htda, and his scores with Atticus Ross but i wanna branch out more into some earlier stuff
@@Gggly2513 It's pretty hard to find his older stuff because a lot of the bands he was a part of didn't record studio quality stuff or it's basically lost media at this point. But basically what I did before was look up the bands he was apart of on Wikipedia and through articles and interviews and then search the band names with Trent Reznor as well. So I'd type something like "Slam Bamboo Trent Reznor" and see what songs he was involved with and listen to those if they're on TH-cam. Some songs have been taken down since I posted that comment 4-5 years ago. The singer of Slam Bamboo actually has a channel where he used to reply to comments asking about Trent and the band but I'm unsure if the channel exists anymore or if he responds to anybody anymore. Just try to look up online what bands he was in and search to see if any of his songs are online with that band. Unfortunately a lot of it is just lost to time. You can find some records and stuff for his early works but they're outrageously expensive to get a hold of physically so I never went that route. Some of the music is good but generally a lot of his early work is very 80's average run of the mill synth pop and such.
All the people here and elsewhere asking who hurt trent. Have you never been 20 something, and in a breakup, where the breakup is the end of the world? Being overly dramatic and self-deprecating as you are, you realize you are the victim, and somebody else is 100% at fault, because YOU never make mistakes, and go write songs and lyrics about it. Somehow this felt so relate-able to me, and doesn't necessarily mean that trent has been abused in a relationship.
I feel this song is sort of a lash at the significant other who pretends that you're the problem for everything. It's a very sarcastic kind of played out motif where the lyrics are poised in a "deserving" manner whilst explaining the overly dramatic nonsense the significant other is shoveling. Obviously the person being lambasted isn't the problem, it's the significant other. The thing is it's hard to tell if the person likes it or not, if they're just going with the flow or if it's actually waning on them. The most telling stanza is: "So once again the way you feel will never ever stay the same" "And I'm to blame" "I wonder just who made the rules up for this game" "Well I guess I just don't understand about what you want and what you need" "And I guess I just don't understand about why this is how it has to be" Keywords here are "So once again" implying this is a revolving circumstance they're stuck in and that he enjoys it. Overall it just sounds like this is a big sadomasochistic thrill for masturbatory denial. The theme however is emotional manipulation. It also seems like the significant other is not aware of their behavior even though the person is aware of it. Totally narcissism but it's deeper because there's a reciprocation and enjoyment from the abuse. Which sounds pretty Trent for some reason idk why.
I can't believe that what I feel is really happening to me. Make it hurt and point the finger at my insecurities. Well I guess I just don't understand about those complexities in your mind. And I guess I just don't understand why this world seems so unkind. Maybe. Maybe just once. I get what's coming. Maybe. Maybe just once. I get what's coming to me. So once again the way you feel will never ever stay the same. And I'm to blame. I wonder just who made the rules up for this game. Well I guess I just don't understand about what you want and what you need. And I guess I just don't understand about how it has to be. Maybe. Maybe just once. I get what's coming. Maybe. Maybe just once. I get what's coming to me. Oh! You sat down on this bed and you said: "Christ, what the hell do you think this place is?" You know. He just couldn't believe it! And I said: "I don't know but it sure is something different" So go ahead, you say those thousand things you think you have to say. Look at me, and tell me love's not such a hard word anyway. Well how can you count on me, I thought you realized for sure. And how can you just believe, I thought I deserved just a little more. Maybe. Maybe just once. I get what's coming. Maybe. Maybe just once. I get what's coming to me. Oh God! Oh what's coming to me...
My favorite proto-PHM song! I fell in love with this one when I bought the bootleg of these demos and wished he had kept it on for the album. Alas, it didn’t fit with the aesthetic of what NIN became. Still a great song!
Every. Damn. Feminist. I interpret this song to be like some blue pilled dude getting friendzoned each encounter and then becoming an asshole to women to then starting to get what was coming for him in the first place (actual intimacy).
I fucking love this song. Such a shame it didn't make it past this demo.
this guy remastered the whole album, it sounds pretty good th-cam.com/video/SPuVy65V1uQ/w-d-xo.html

It honestly doesn't fit the whole vibe of Pretty Hate Machine. But I definitely see it fitting in a more Depeche Mode inspired album
This is one of my all time favorite NIN songs from the early era, I'd love it if this actual saw the light of day again in 2024.
All the cheesiness of the 80’s but all the brilliance of Trent. Best song of its era.
This song. Discovered on Napster circa 1999. Still a guilty pleasure.
It should always be free art. Napster helped discover a lot of artist also. Awesome this is uploaded. Thanks
