Gene had an amazing ability to story tell in all his songs. This is my fave of all time simply because of how he tells the story. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice, first time I was age 7 and then 28. I shook his hand at end of show and sang all the lyrics from front row. I will never forget, he is a legend and there’s no one else like him…ever.

I'm 79 years old and this song, "Mecca", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", "Only Love can Break a Heart" and others of his have been my favorites for something like 60 years now. His voice had a very special quality to it and his songs always related a message that people could feel and relate to. God Bless him.

Mecca, with the new schottisch woke law, he would be in jail for adultery. Fucking great song lyrics&sound would make mo the pedo false profet think twice . Funny thing mo was a mix and the camel was his best friend. He was left behind and that why he had those attacks & deliriums. Whats now called epilepsie.

That era was great for the really wonderful singers in this genre as well as others like Motown, Country and Western - always a wide variety of really talented singers and musicians no matter what you were listening to. Today? If you like a lot of low quality music with profanity all over the place and few real stars - that's what we have now. Sad!

I'm thirteen, and I listened to this song for the first time yesterday. I fell in love with it. One day music will return to its former glory of music the likes of the 60s, 70s, 80s (and other decades, just some examples). I'm not saying modern music is all bad, but mainstream songs have clearly, in many people's opinions, including mine, been downgraded in quality. Just an opinion, what are your thoughts?

In August of 1967 I saw this artist in concert in my hometown of Va. Beach, Va. at the VA. Beach Dome. That was a small venue where they had 2,000 chairs all lined from side to side starting not far from the stage going to the back of the Dome. Giant fans were at the back of the Dome to blow the hot air around as there was no A/C. It was hot in there but nobody cared. What a performer! A hand pulled the curtain to one side at the left side of the stage and Pitney came out in a black suit, white shirt and a black tie. He had a 10 piece band in back of him. Hundreds rushed the stage with their flash cameras. He sounded exactly like his records. Now those were the days when concerts were worth going to. It was worth every minute!

It's a good story but also a bad story, because it's about something that a reckless guy did against his wife or partner. Eg, he was not too far away from getting back home to her and he'd seen another woman on the way who he wanted to run off with. And if he's like that (that reckless & unreliable) then he will do it again and again, regardless of who gets hurt and leaving a trail of misery in his wake. I have herd this song many years ago and always wondered whether Gene was maybe singing a true story about himself and something he might've done - or maybe he made it all up just as as lyrics for a song. I have no idea. I only ever herd 2 things about this guy - 1, he was a famous singer, and the other............. well.

He had heard and wanted to meet an Australian/Italian guy who sang his songs almost as well as he did. Gene Pitney was unique. He appealed to both young and old. Admittedly though, the Beatles didn't come to the US until early 1964 and then enter the charts. Still a great song and Gene is still much missed, he passed away in 2006 in Wales in a hotel...
