Gene Pitney was the first singer I liked and still play his music in 2023. I had the privilege of seeing him perform in Australia and was blown away by his talent. Fans who loved his music will make sure he is not forgotten ever.
I just turned 70 and Gene Pitney was a part of my teenage years. I'm still listening to this day. May he rest in peace, sadly missed and taken too soon.
Always loved Gene Pitney....I loved his voice and choice of songs. What a voice! Don't think he ever got the credit he deserved. He also wrote great songs. He had such a strong voice and high range. I still play his music. When I hear on radio, I turn it up and sing along. He has given me hours of joy.
Gene Pitney was underrated by the industry in his time and is virtually unknown today - he should not be allowed to fade and that is why your tribute on TH-cam is so important - excellent appreciation.
Michael Daly Artist I’ll always remember him. His cousin attended the Catholic girls’ school I went to. On Sunday evenings he often brought her back and would put on an impromptu performance for us! This was at the height of his career and I often thought how very kind it was of him. Thank you, Gene.
Another underrated singer and song writer. I absolutely love virtually every Pitney song and performance. He's in my Top 4 male singers of his era: Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Bobby Vee, and Gene. RIP all of them.
Thanks for the mentions. John Lennon said that Orbison had the greatest voice he had ever heard. And for us Connecticut people it's Gene "The Rockville Rocket" Pitney.
He was a real looker with a fantastic, unique and soothing voice. It is always heart-wrenchingly sad to think of a star dying alone in a hotel room and being flown home to family. ThanQ very much for all of those beautiful songs, rest in eternal peace Gene Pitney.
I loved Gene Pitney. Amazing voice. Whenever I hear any of his songs I cry because it takes me right back to the sixties when I was a teen. His songs bring back a lot of memories. 😔💜
@@itsalgud1459 Believe me, it's easier, waaaaay easier to sing Frankie Valli's songs then it is to sing Gene Pitneys. Valli sings in falsetto, which basically is singing in an unnatural voice. When Pitney sings he is never singing in falsetto, his range is awesome. But don't get me wrong, Valli's style of using his falsetto is great, I love his songs too. BTW, listen to Pitney's song "Mecca" and you'll know what I'm talking about. Also note, this lead thread mentions Shannon, and I can only assume he means Del Shannon. That guy does not belong next to Pitney or Orbison. Although done many times before him, Shannon did popularize the falsetto in his hit song "Runaway." Frankie Valli came after that with "Sherry"

"Town Without Pity" has to be one of the most cinematic, evocative records about young love ever made. His vocals were so heartfelt and impassioned. As for his songwriting talent, I would think he could've lived fairly handsomely off the royalties from the legendary "He's a Rebel" alone, as it is clearly one of the best pop records ever made.

Gene Pitney was simply unique. You knew who it was as soon as one of his songs came on the radio as he was so distinctive in his vocals. He and his record company, Musicor were responsible for one of the greatest two sided records ever; namely 'Only Love Can Break A Heart' and 'If I Didn't Have A Dime.' Unbelievably, not becoming a hit in the UK although I bought it. He did fare better with 'Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa' and subsequent releases and Gene became a regular visitor to our shores due to his popularity. He ranks along side other greats of the time like Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Ricky Nelson, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Bobby Vee, Neil Sedaka and Pat Boone who were the backdrop for many of us in our teenage years. Michael Scott we had sock hops in the old old gym and it is also gone we would slow dance to only love can break a heart and only love can mend it again , it was like a fairy tale and the mood was awesome We loved this guy
One of my earliest memories is hearing Gene Pitney singing 24 hours from Tulsa. It is still a favourite song to this day. He was a uniquely talented singer/songwriter with the most distinctive singing voice. A true pop star made in the best way, experience and dedication to craft.
I have loved Gene Pitney's songs and his amazing voice since I first heard it in 1961. My very favorite song is I'm Gonna Be Strong. I have that one and others on my I Tunes playlist. I listen too them all the time...,
He Had The Most Unique Sounding voice which made him unmistakable. It's hard to imagine anyone else's voice singing 24 hrs from Tulsa, for instance. What a talent. I believe He was underrated by the industry he was in. For Me The Man is A Legend. Iain UK
So pleased to see this posting. I am and always will be a HUGE Gene Pitney fan. Thankfully this wonderful performer left a treasure trove of his work which I play every day. He gave so much and is still giving. Love the way he put everything into a song. Thank you for keeping this man's talents alive.
Hi Diana. Have you listened to Every Breath I Take by Gene Pitney (on TH-cam). This is my favourite Gene Pitney song followed closely by every other song he ever sang.
I grew up in Rockville CT where Gene was from and he often visited throughout the years. He was always down to earth and very friendly to his fans. I will always remember him fondly. I didn't realize that he was buried in Somers, which is 20 miles from me and I plan to go pay my respects this weekend.
He was so talented. I remember his songs and that voice. He was such a force when he performed. It is rare to read about a successful singer and composer who put family above fame.
Gene Pitney had that rare combination of great talent, a beautiful and expressive voice that was instantly recognizable and the ability to work well with other artists and so bring out the best in him and the person he collaborated with. I fear we won't see his like for a long time.
Well done. My brother & I have covered Pitney songs for over 50 years and I still sing "Only love can break a heart" as a tip of the hat this amazing man.
He wrote so many great songs and had a very recognizable (great) voice...brings back lots of memories. This was a good video covering his career and life.
I grew up with these songs....No, Gene was never really given the credit so rightfully due him. Man, i can recall so many good memories where his songs come into focus again. It Hurts to be in love...was a monster hit but you rarely hear it mentioned today. It was a rocking song. His vast talent and singing ability, in my mind, made him one of the best rock stars of all time. I was thrilled with his fondness for country music, when he recorded with the King Gorge Jones. My life was greatly enriched by his presence with us and I pray he will continually RIP.
What a wonderful and talented man Gene Pitney was.Love his vocals ..got all the emotions .I'm gonna be strong ..awesome. RIP. .thank you for the music and memories. I'm sad you passed as you did .In another country and I hope you were not alone ❤❤❤
His musical talents had so much range he would be hard to describe to today's audiences. Vocals, writing, playing various instruments and so forth he was just GREAT!
Thank you for this well deserved tribute to one of the greatest performers of all time. Wish I could have seen him in concert just once. I still have his Greatest Hits album and every song is amazing.
I agree with all the other comments. I grew up with Gene pitney, not to mention all the other greats - there will never be another great voice like his
I had no idea he was such a talent! I'd heard the name and thought he was a semi-popular singer, maybe a couple of hits, but this guy's story had never been told to me before. Thank you Alpha 11!!!
I was lucky enough to interview him in the 1990s, when I worked at oldies station WLNG. Great storyteller! Like many of you had said, very under-rated.
It's been 62 years since I first discovered Gene Pitney [ in 1962], I was 13 and found him captivating. I have an entire Playlist named after him - with all his hit songs. Literally, not a day goes by without playing one. I'll do this until I'm gone. No artist ever stirred my soul...like he did. God Bless you, Gene & thanks for a lifetime of memories....RIP, my friend ❤.
I remembering listening to Gene back in the 60s when my sister played his albums and loved him too. He had an incredible voice and such passion! Then I grew up, fell in love and the songs hit me right where it hurt! Rest in peace, Gene.
What a great tribute to a great man, I had seen him in countless concerts here in Wales and had the privilege of going to Rockville with friends all who loved him and paid our respects at is grave. There will never be another talented singer like him x
I was a teenager during his rise to fame. The songs were quite affective and his voice was amazing. He sounds like an all around decent guy, and someone who mazimized his talents. Nice retrospective, thanks. RIP Gene.
@@246spyder I truley believe Jay Black had the same range. Listen to Cara Mia. I'm not saying Jay was better cause I love them both! All of those listed here were great, Cheers!
Love, love, love his voice. I have my 16 year old granddaughter hooked on him too. She is amazed by his vocal range. We up the volume and sing along when he comes up on my playlist. Thank you for this tribute.
WOW!!! I remember Pitney's songs well, but I NEVER knew that he wrote so many great songs for so many great acts. His voice was totally unforgettable, utterly unique. And he wrote well in so many genres... just amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Great performer! I saw him in 1971 in Liverpool. He was regarded (by some) as old hat at that stage. I went with nothing better to do, but his vocal chops and presentation were outstanding! Huge talent. RIP.
First time I have ever heard this great singer is gone. But at least he lived a normal life and did not die too young. He had a special voice which transmitted feeling as he sang. I shall miss him. RIP Gene Pitney. You shall be missed as you were one of my favorite singers.
Gene Pitney was a super super singer and songwriter, I cannot think of anyone else who could make me STOP what I am doing and turn the volume up and listen to him singing. What a brilliant singer. I loved the bones of the man.
Aged 44 now, Inhad no idea of whom Gene Pitney was. I woud here and watch with a child like curiosity his video in which he performs in a duet his amazing song "Something gotta hold of my heart" and bewilder my heart as Ingot aquainted with a convulsing passionate way to describe the emotions of love and falling in love. The ups, downs, the high pitch of the voice and the way it would resolve the emotional conflict between the musical prases, would keep me stack to the tv screen and stick the music to my heart so far. On the year's first day, 2018, I had the song again running through my mind according to an emotional fatigue to which this music, my mind seemed to apprehend it from past times as an atonement. And it was a very inspired moment of regresse to the past this much that the song did so a good work to my heart. To my shame, however I realize he was a genius, agreat singer and composer! Where was I that I did not know of him except through his song? I sense already a great deal of beauty in any of his songs and all composed by himself. I am beautifully taken by surprize anyway! Wonderfull!
He was accepted as a fairly successful song artist in America. But with the Beatles came the realization that he along with Roy Orbison were considered GREAT song artists over in England. So he and Roy Orbison became great in America. That's the story I heard.
Saw himn in Launceston Tasmania, Australia in the 90s, he wouldnt sing who shot liberty valance due to the Port Arthur massacre, even though 10000 people wanted him to sing it.
I have always loved Gene, and his music. I had the pleasure to go to one of his concerts in the UK. I still love to listen to him, it reminds me of my youth, and Im now 75 !!
I grew up listening and loving Gene Pitney songs. From the 60's and up to today, I still listen to his songs. He was known as 'The Voice' in the 60's and Roy Orbison was 'The big O'. I would loved to have had the chance to see Gene live on stage and missed it when he was in my city.

He was my heartthrob. He had a wonderful voice . Went to see him in Oxford. I was 14 and wearing my brothers coat 🤦♀️. After the show my mother mum tried to find him back stage . Everyone was screaming and my mum told me to 'scream' still got his LP.
I'm a native of CT, and Gene Pitney, the Rockville Rocket, was an immense talent, and so under rated. So sorry to hear of his passing. RIP. Your talent still leaves us in awe
This man is my all time favorite solo artist and I've been listening to him for 50 yrs. Heard I'm gonna be Strong at 12 and I was hooked. His range was unmatched. A true talent, song writer and a voice like no other. Everyone who ever worked with him, had only good things to say. It's hard to believe he's gone 11 yrs, he's sorely missed but his music lives on.:o)
Tom exactly !!!! I loved the song from the first time I heard it but the ending sent chills down the spine. Till this day I get the same effect. I don't know if he could make a lumberjack cry but if that lumberjack just got jilted... guaranteed lol :o)
His range is absolutley incredible. I think he was a very underrated singer but as far as i am concerned one of the best voices ever to grace an album.
Gene Pitney was The Best live singer I ever saw out of so many acts I had the pleasure of seeing while working at Talk of the South night club in Southend, Essex England during the 70´s
A classic example of the effortless way Pitney took hold of a song and completely possessed it. This song builds and builds to a dramatic conclusion. If only it received more airplay people would realize whst a consummate performer he was.

Hi from Buffalo, New York. I grew up listening to the music of Gene Pitney. Even today I still listen to his music, itwhis vocals that ate Fantastic.
Gene Pitney did his last show in Cardiff S Wales. I was there, he was great . love all his songs.
Hi Sonia
One of my earliest memories is hearing Gene Pitney singing 24 hours from Tulsa. It is still a favourite song to this day. He was a uniquely talented singer/songwriter with the most distinctive singing voice. A true pop star made in the best way, experience and dedication to craft.
What a powerful voice and talent Gene. You will be missed. Loved your music.
Truly missed, for sure! Thank you, Jeanne!
Hi Jeanne
Excellent coverage of Gene's career. A man whose music I grew up listening to. He was truly one of the greats!
Iain UK
Yes..he had that prime requisite for being a successful singer-a unique voice!
So pleased to see this posting. I am and always will be a HUGE Gene Pitney fan. Thankfully this wonderful performer left a treasure trove of his work which I play every day. He gave so much and is still giving. Love the way he put everything into a song. Thank you for keeping this man's talents alive.
And thank you for watching; we're glad you enjoyed it!
You're welcome, John. I'm just happy a Pitney fan liked our video. Really appreciate the nice comment.

Ann Barron I
a very distinct voice. u will know its him!!!
Ann Barron mmm
Yes. Unmistakable.
Discovered my Mum's old Gene Pitney records when I was about 6 years old, and have had a HUGE soft spot for him ever since.
His voice was unique, matched only by his songwriting skills.
Well done. My brother & I have covered Pitney songs for over 50 years and I still sing "Only love can break a heart" as a tip of the hat this amazing man.
KOOLDAVE1953,,, mate I went through all your songs but didn't hear you singing you or your mate any Gene Pitney songs,,,,, Just saying.

I grew up with Gene pitney, not to mention all the other greats - there will never be another great voice like his
Hi Marie
I had no idea he was such a talent! I'd heard the name and thought he was a semi-popular singer, maybe a couple of hits, but this guy's story had never been told to me before. Thank you Alpha 11!!!
I was lucky enough to interview him in the 1990s, when I worked at oldies station WLNG. Great storyteller! Like many of you had said, very under-rated.
Awe...tell us more... please.
I loved Gene Pitney He had a great voice He is truly missed
Always been a Gene Pitney fan, Saw him at Doncaster Dome, Brilliant Singer.
One of the all-time classic voices! Mecca was fantastic!!!!
He sang looking through the eyes of love so brilliantly. Such a powerful song to me. Great talented singer.
I remembering listening to Gene back in the 60s when my sister played his albums and loved him too. He had an incredible voice and such passion! Then I grew up, fell in love and the songs hit me right where it hurt! Rest in peace, Gene.
So talented! We had so many talented people that he got lost. Such a shame!
What a great tribute to a great man, I had seen him in countless concerts here in Wales and had the privilege of going to Rockville with friends all who loved him and paid our respects at is grave. There will never be another talented singer like him x
Thank you for watching; we're glad you enjoyed it.
I was a teenager during his rise to fame. The songs were quite affective and his voice was amazing. He sounds like an all around decent guy, and someone who mazimized his talents. Nice retrospective, thanks. RIP Gene.
One of the truly great talents and most original voices of the 20th century.
Yep! Fantastic voice. Thanks, Sean!
Hell of a singer; tremendously powerful voice.
What a voice! On a par with Roy Orbison and Elvis.
Mega hit man.wonderful voice.great songwriter.
Dream Dream Serene by far!
Way better singer than Orbison and Presley!
@@narvelancoleman8597 No way, no one had the range of Roy Orbinson, no one.
Glenn Johnson One of the greats who wrote some of the best songs ever.A true legend and thanks for this posting.
Thanks for watching; we're glad you enjoyed it!
RIP.
I feel blessed to have live through this magical era ...
a great performer my wife and I had the pleasure of watching him perform twice the last time just before his last concert greatly missed.
Thank you for this. I loved Gene and his songs (with that incredible voice).
Gene Pitney had the coolest, most original sounding voice. Miss you Gene
Wonderfull!
One of my all time favorites. A distinctive voice with a unique blend.
Such an awesome voice! Thanks, Doug!
what a powerful voice, that could bring you to tears with his songs of love, and lost love. he always gave me strength! 🍾🍾
He was accepted as a fairly successful song artist in America. But with the Beatles came the realization that he along with Roy Orbison were considered GREAT song artists over in England. So he and Roy Orbison became great in America. That's the story I heard.
FELL IN LOVE WITH GENE'S VOICE TO "HAFE HEAVEN HAFE HEARTACHE" AND I WAS HOOKED FOR EVER ! RIP MR. "P"
Hi Pat
One of the great singer songwriters, I had the good fortune to see Gene in person in the 80's....
That's awesome! I never had the chance so consider yourself lucky! Thank you, Barry!
I also saw him in the 80's in Southampton. Fantastic
I saw him a few times when he came to London his voice touched my heart so sad he went to soon
Saw himn in Launceston Tasmania, Australia in the 90s, he wouldnt sing who shot liberty valance due to the Port Arthur massacre, even though 10000 people wanted him to sing it.
I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WORK WITH HIM IN THE FOUNDERS THEATER HAMILTON NEW ZEALAND IN 60s
I have always loved Gene, and his music. I had the pleasure to go to one of his concerts in the UK. I still love to listen to him, it reminds me of my youth, and Im now 75 !!
Another GREAT ARTIST who left us EARLY for immortality.
Great artist greater humanbeeing. Voice of a Angel. God surely blessed Gene Pittney
With talents. Every thing he sang was brilliant. And loved by many . MY younger days were touched by his music. He is for sure surely missed.
God bless his Wife and Family. Loosing their dad and Husband., 🎶🔑🎶❤️🔑🎶❤️🎶
❤️🎶🎶
Sorry you lost your favorite singer. Though we were all lucky to have him and his music. Thank you for watching!
Alpha amen to that and you are most welcomed.:o)
When I first heard the ending to I'm gonna be strong, I knew there was no one like him. He could pull the tears out of a lumberjack.
Great singer, beautiful voice, extremely under rated, loved the song " Half heaven, half headache".
A classic example of the effortless way Pitney took hold of a song and completely possessed it. This song builds and builds to a dramatic conclusion. If only it received more airplay people would realize whst a consummate performer he was.
Heartache.
Love that one too, Hector
Me too.
