Back around 1990, I bought 36 cases of records from a guy for $800. Come to find out, his father was an executive for Columbia records. Every time they pressed a record, he got a copy. About 95% of these were either test pressings, or white label promos. Think, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Santana etc... Also Bruce Springsteen. I got a mint copy of that hand drawn Born to Run album. I sold it for $1500 at a record show back then. I still have about 90% of that collection in my stash.

In 1980 I had bought a big stack of albums from my oldest bro, which I no longer have bc my abusive ex had thrown them all out in a huge deep ditch that floods yearly. It was such a great loss to me, my bro had died a month later n I had cherished his albums. They had consisted of a variety of classic rock, disco, etc. I also had a variety of vinyl record albums n 45's from the 60's n 70's. My favorites were CCR, they had belonged to an uncle who had also passed away when I was 7 yrs old in 69, I had found them in 74. But two of my aunts had burned them all. Music was a huge part of my life, more healing. Losing all of the albums was such a great loss to me. So if y'all have record albums, cherish them, they're valuable in various ways.

Unfortunately, it was the start of me being violently abused for 4 yrs. He had threatened me saying that if I had left em, he'd break my bones n mess my face up so nobody wud want me n I believed em, which is why I had lied saying that I'd be visiting my family n wud return to em, I didn't, thank God. I kept the truth from my family until a yr after returning back home, I tld one of my older bros n had to talk him out of traveling to AZ to get em, we live in NV/ID, I had never seen him that mad, angry. A part of me wanted him to pay em back but he wasn't worth my bro getting in trouble. After I had left was when he tossed my belongings in that ditch. He left a large wooden, military style trunk that is full of 70's rock and roll, hard rock, etc. albums. The trunk has been sitting in my garage for years and I only opened it for the first time quite recently. I knew nothing of values for these records but now I am intrigued to go though them and check them out. Dillon, I have a question. I got a name brand record player that will record onto a cd, which I haven't used for that purpose. The thing is, it includes a 78 speed setting, and I got some 78 records from a relatives attic. I cleaned them up as best I could, but some did have lots of dust, and even a dirt dobber nest, which I cleaned as best as I could. These are records from the 30's with big names, but I think I did a really dumb thing by playing one. I only played it for about 30 seconds before I realized it could possibly damage the needle, and then mess up some of my treasured a
Records. I was always careful to hold them by the edges, and not only dust wipe the record before playing, but use a bit of dust off on the needle as well. This is the best way to get rid of even subtle pops, short of having your own clean room to listen in. (Used for making hard drives) haha... Anyway, do you recommend changing the needle before playing a modern vinyl record, or is just giving the needle a good cleaning with some isopropyl alcohol enough??? I love old records. I passed up a bootleg zeppelin album at a yard sale in Fayetteville NC a few years back. Didn't have the space. One record I have that is a 38, might be worth something. It is the recording of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon and going out with his One step for Mankind speech. It is mint condition with a photo on both sides of the cover slip. The cover does have some very minor creases from holding.
I just wonder if it is worth anything. I just discovered your channel tonight and it's awesome. Thanks for doing this.

Very informative ... and I've been collecting records for 55 years but - back in the mid-60s - I remember getting rid of a first press Velvet Underground because some of the songs were too loud and raucous ie 'Heroin' ... later passing up on a box of 20 + Odyssey & Oracle albums (in Woolworth's) at 50p (50c?) each, and a box of 30 Pretty Things ' Midnight to Six Man' eps, (20c ea) because I only needed one of each - right. There are about a dozen versions of those Australian AC/DC pressings. Depends on which one you have that has the most worth - like the blue labels with the yellow kangaroo on its label. Secondary, you have the condition both the cover and especially the condition the vinyl is in that sets its price. No one wants a worn out G+ vinyl.

Back in the early 80's, my brother was a manager at Record Bar. He had several crates of "cut-outs" and was often, also, given promotional concert tickets,
back stage passes and several times had various groups stop by the store to make public appearances. With all the interaction with these (mostly) rock
groups, he would get the band members to autograph the many albums he had collected. It was a really cool collection until his house caught fire and

This was well done. There are more of course (Simon & Garfunkel, Mamas & Papas) but a great overview. Can't decide whether this will help reduce the amount of sellers coming in with Moody Blue blue vinyl thinking they have a fortune coming, or that it may actually increase those kinds of sellers coming in. Wasn't aware of Wake Of The Flood but this kind of thing fascinates me. We've had lots of Synchronicity collectors coming in asking to see our Police dupes. The one we always get here is Dylan's greatest hits with the psych poster. There was some Time article years ago that apparently everyone read stating those copies are worth hundreds or more. Still get that all the time. In any case nice work!

I imagine the old mono albums from the Beatles will increase in value being the engineers being interviewed which are now all over You Tube swear by them as the best sounding because they were mixed to sound the best tonally in mono and are the ones they put the most work into to get the sound they all wanted. They said they hate all the remixes. So regardless of what sounds best to our ears does not mean it is worth more.

Interesting video, though I have non of the shown records. I got some a little more valuable first british pressings of certain King Crimson-albums, which might already be my most valuable records. The most "lucky" pieces in my collection are Guns'n'Roses "Spaghetti Incident", original european pressing from it's release, which I bought arround 1998 when a music store in my area sold all it's vinyl on a discount to get rid of it. As I hardly ever played it, I'm sure it's NM, as it was stored well all those years. Was laughing out loud learning that it was worth 80 Euros and more, when I got back into vinyl 2 years ago. Wasn't able to get rid of it, when I tried to sell my old small collection back in the day. The other one is an israelian pressing of Led Zeppelins "IV", which I recently bought on a flea market in Berlin for 3,50 Euros. It is at least in VG+-condition, after a good spin-clean it played flawlessly just a few hairlines from the paper sleeve (now it rests in a antistatic one). Hardly could believe, that made arround 100 Euros on discogs. Nothing worth a fortune, but it shows, that there still can be some lucky finds and unknown treasures arround.

Great video! Regarding the Led Zeppelin II vinyl, it’s ludicrous to think someone could work at a record label and be so thick as to make a call like that (it being played on a kids record player) and then having it remixed. An example of too much power that shouldn’t have been granted.

    • @rabarebra
      @rabarebra 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

wasn't remixed, but lowered in sound volume. It was common back then, if it didn't work on all turntables, they fixed it. If the grooves are too big (too large waveforms), there will be large low frequency (bass) curves that made the needle jump out of the grooves. Equipment got better, so nobody cared later on about those cheap turntables.

Fantastic run through. Been collecting records for 30yrs & still learned a lot of valuable and or entertaining info on this video. I’d love to see more crate digging videos & advice for new collectors turning over large lots of records. It gets toxic, between dirt, dust, & mildew. I know folks are out here makin themselves sick trying to start their own collections. Gotta wear a mask & gloves. Which sucks. Advice? Thoughts? Thanks! Subscribed! Will be back.
PS. I have about 40 cherry grateful dead albums from a grail collection I acquired. You might be interested. 2 mint copies of Europe 72 with the inserts. And a copy of Rolling Stones - Exile on Main street CHERRY with the post cards still in tact. Stuff like that.

Happy that I stumbled on your channel,I love old vinyl,I had about 900 albums and a bunch of 45s,singles and also 78s,and every Elvis Presley record ever... sadly all were lost in 2011 when Blizzard Alfred ripped through Connecticut and dumped 4 feet of snow and ice, destroying the quansett hut house I lived in,I subscribed the second you said you sold you Led Zeppelin album to start your record business, that is true passion and commitment 👍👍

I once stayed with Julian Lennon, long time ago. Went to his 18th birthday. In his mums house was a demo single for strawberry fields. The label was written in biro and was only cut on one side.
What would it be worth now.
    Cheers dude.🙈🙉🙊

Thanks for a wonderful and insightful video. I was flooded out in the June 2012 floods in Upstate PA and prior to that I had about 3500 pieces of vinyl with a number (5) of the pieces of vinyl you mentioned. Vinyl prices have gone up a ton in the last 10 years and all of my vinyl is buried in a landfill being ruined in that flood. One of the pieces you mentioned was The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and I was always under the misconception (maybe yes and maybe no) that the Mono pressing of this was worth some serious gelt. Not the one you mentioned but just the Mono of it. Please enlighten me and thanks so much from one DeadHead (637 shows) to another!!

I hope you had insurance, you could re-buy all of it according to the current prices when that happened. If not, you were pretty less smart.

@@rabarebra I did have insurance plus flood insurance however they were in my finished basement. The insurance didn't cover it, the flood insurance didn't cover it because they were NOT on the first floor of our swiss chalet. We had 600K in losses which could only be covered if they were on the first or 2nd story (the first being 10 feet above ground level). All in all with this flood which was the worst in history in our area. The Susquehanna river was 12 feet over flood level and it took the National Guard a week to get to our home in Humvees. We wound up getting $1800 from FEMA while our neighbors who had some water damage to a spare bathroom $60K. Go figure.
