I recently found a stereo second state Butcher album in the shrink wrap at a record store here in Arizona for 10 bucks. They’re still out there! It’s the second one I’ve found in the wild, I found a nice mono copy about 10 years ago at a used bookstore for 4 bucks.

Yes. A friend has found two butchers at used record stores, and I recently found a fan club Christmas lp ( yes, a real one) still in the shrink for free. The moral of course? These items can and are found.

My collection is probebly worthless, but has sentimental value as the singles were collected by my mum as they were released. And she bought me some albums for birthdays and christmas growing up. I've continued to collect them ever since. But only for listening pleasure. :)

    • @rosschops9509

Not worthless at all. That’s true value. The rest is just older, richer people drooling and spending. Don’t be fooled. John would probably say something similar.

Not only do I agree... Hey EMI, how about an RSD release on 7" 45rpm and 10" 78rpm...? You did an awesome RSD 78 of The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations". Oh c'mon, Please Please (Me lol), with sugar on top...?
#recordstoreday (hey I hear this hashtag thingie works)
EDIT: Nowadays there are far more options and advances in digital restoration of the recording itself than there was in 1994/5 when it was done for the Anthology 1 set. Each lacquer (or misnomered "acetate") can be a different restoration animal of its own. If I could work on a new transfer of that disc, cleaned and played properly with an archival 78 stylus (matched to groove size), I'd make it a year long project to remove all scratches 'manually' (sometimes visually reconstructing the soundwave) for best quality, send its remaining surface noise to the basement where it belongs, and retune its frequencies so you could hear more of what that HMV mic picked up in that room.

No rare Beatles for me, but in 1978(aged 18) I bought a copy of the White album from our only local record store for the massive price of £9.70. The young girl shop assistant gave out a large cry at the price, of course very embrassing for myself.

My own rarest Beatle album is the Mono Box, given that most of my individual album copies are not remotely rare or even the best issues.
The rarest Beatle album I've seen is a copy of the Butcher cover with the replacement cover on the BACK side of the album. It looked like it had been sitting in a flooded basement, and now I wonder if it could possibly be a third state where the replacement cover was removed intact enough to put it on the back cover. It would seem an impossible feat.

Your videos have completely refreshed my excitement over The Beatles.
I would like to request a topic- Could you do a comparison of The Beatles and The Monkees? The Monkees were, of course, created to capitalize on The Beatles, but, it turned out GREAT, somehow. I'd like to see you explore the similarities in both the music, and the visual presentation. It sounds like a fun topic ( to me, anyway).
Thank you for these shows, they are part of my daily life now, and my stereo is surrounded with all my Beatles CDs right now.

Found a VJLP 1085 Beatles & Frank Ifield stereo portrait cover back in the 80's. Think i paid £3........ terrible condition though. Got it in a 2nd hand record shop in Cork, Ireland.....God knows how it got there. I had seen a photo of the back cover slick in a rare records book (with the "copulation" text) though the book had been referring to the Jolly What (old gentleman cover) version. It wasnt until we had entered the interwebs age that i was able to find out all about it. I subsequently had it authenticated as genuine original by a collector in the US. My best find......so far!😊

While I was watching this, I won an eBay listing of the nicest white album I’ve ever seen, no EMI with three zeros (10,000s literally ten thousand and something). It’s no number 1 but when it’s within a full collection of UK 1st pressings in near mint it will be worth more than it is by itself. And of course like every other great record I’ve bought, it was in pounds not dollars!!!

My sister wrote "I (HEART) Paul" on the cover of all our original Capitol albums, just like millions of other girls in the U.S. Still, I treasure them, and even the first Apple re-releases, which I bought when they were first issued, seeing as the Capitols had been played to death! The rarest album I've bid on and lost unfortunately, is the 1971 Yesterday and Today on the US Red Target label. Only 4 copies have surfaced I believe, and I heard even less of a Red Target Revolver US. They started pressing, and immediately stopped because they were supposed to be pressed on the Apple US label instead. They were however pressed on the Red Target label in Canada identical to the US except "made in Canada" on label. I'm guessing worth around $4000 - $6000 US if you can find one.

I had the rare honor (for someone my age) of listening to REVOLVER for the first time in my life on an original UK pressing from 1966. Being a mere 14 year old brazilian boy with little to no allowance, I then took an old cassete tape from some kids material my sisters didn’t care about anymore and made a copy of that vinyl and listened to it for months on end, until on Christmas that year I was given an original REVOLVER cassete tape from those late 80s reissues. Some purists would say I made a poor choice, for those hisses, wheezes and that stuffy sound are supposed to be part of the experience of listening to a psychedelic album, particularly one from the greatest band ever

I found a White album no. 0000076 in a record store some months ago; when I was about to pay the asking price of 30$, the owner of the shop refused to sell it. The condition was poor; the cover was EX-, the records was maybe VG- and was missing the photos, had a rip in the poster and no black sleeves. Some weeks later the owner of the shop contacted me that he's got 3500$ for it, and offered me a mono-release from Argentina, no 0014800 something, complete in NM condition, for free. Maybe that's the rarest I have...
Or the re-issue of "Butcher cover" with a red vinyl. Bought it for 17$ some weeks ago.

You mean the re-issue, released sometime around 2015? Nah, it's not worth anything much; I think I paid maybe $20 for it then, just as a curiosity piece, to go with my original Stage 1 in Stereo. Looks good, though, and it's a good reproduction, including the rainbow labels. That red vinyl, though...

Want a good laugh? I used to think my bootleg LP set called "Live In Anytown" was worth something spectacular. Been a long time since looking it up, but it's a recording of a 1960s 'multimedia' live show, featuring Beatles' records, pictures, film and audio clips. Apparently it usually went clunky at Best (pun intended, but it really suffered many device failures during shows). If I really wanted to accept an audio restoration challenge, the records sound awful...and so does the vinyl, clean as they appear.
What's "rarest"? I dunno. Maybe my 1st Dutch pressing of Sgt. Pepper is the one?. Could it be my Canadian 1978 greyish splatter vinyl of the same album? I bought all 3 Anthology sets, Live At The BBC, and Love new on vinyl when first released in the 90s (and I got the store's 12" ad card for Anthology 2 when taken down).
For years I've wondered about a mix difference on my Canadian 'Capitol swirl' copy of "Hello Goodbye/I Am The Walrus"...especially of I Am The Walrus. Everyone knows about the 4 extra beats on original 45s, but no one talks about the drums being removed during the 'I'm crying' bit! Some say I'm 'full of it' when I tell them it's what I have because they think it doesn't exist. It was one of the first records I digitized about 20 years ago, just to prove doubters. Besides, it's not my stylus to lie like that about a record.

I've got a Cdn. splatter Sgt. Pepper, the only problem is with that vinyl it's hard to tell what kind of shape it's in. I got it for a couple of bucks, so I wasn't too disappointed when I put it on and it sounded quite beat up. Not sure who would buy that and treat it like rubbish, but I remember they were in most record stores when they came out in the late '70s. I wish I'd tracked down all those coloured vinyl LPs (Red and Blue LPs, Sgt. Pepper, White Album, Love Songs), but I did get a numbered gold vinyl copy of the 1982 Reel Music LP (which I've barely played) that's worth $100 or so.

Late to comment, but the reason Yellow Sub was on the Odeon label is because it was EMI's universal export label. This is the same for the Pink Floyd lps, Yardbirds lps, Noel Coward lps etc that were exported. UK Columbia lps were shipped initially with the Odeon label, but later with the gold Odeon foil labels pasted over the Columbia logo on the lp, and front and back of the jackets. But they used Odeon even when they had the copyright - like Capitol UK - but when they did not, like Columbia and HMV, they used Odeon. I suspect they had an international control over that, and maybe not for Parlophone. Even if they did, they used Odeon for everything.

The rarest Beatles album I own is a mono copy #5 of the White Album signed by all 5 members of the Rolling Stones.
Just kidding. I've never acquired anything really rare. Perhaps my nice German copy of Wonderwall Music is a bit unusual, as was a copy of the Get Back sessions bootleg 'Black Album', which I sold for the staggering sum of £80 (cos it had the poster).
Very interesting video as ever- I still keep my eyes peeled for Beatles 78s in charity shops but no luck yet.

I still have my copy of the "Black Album" with the poster! Good to know it's worth a bit more than the $60 (£30-ish) I paid for it decades ago. I have a couple of other vinyl Beatlegs from that period, Codename: Russia and The Real Case Has Just Begun which, at the time they came out, had material that hadn't been heard by collectors at that point, but I'm sure it's all been issued now. They were taken directly from tapes that had presumably been stolen from the Apple offices and sounded first-rate compared to other boots.

Thanks Andrew, fascinating video! In summer of 1978 at a major record show I had an opportunity for a "near mint" first state Butcher Cover for $300 USA dollars. It was not mint due to being opened, but other than that.... I had $150 saved from lawn cutting and my ultracool Dad said he would loan me the $150...I debated looking at it and other Butcher Covers the dealer displayed for various amounts, the cheapest a few $75-100 dollar poorly peeled ones. I passed on all and bought some 60 albums in total ranging from a VG Rolling Stones collection (12 in all) with many Who/Kinks/Hendrix/Zep/Sabbath/Yes/Pink Floyd/Robin Trower/Albert King/Allman Bros/Dylan thrown in for good measure. Obviously in 1978 I was pleased as pudding with my haul but in 2022. I SMH and wonder how much that mint minus or "near mint" first state Butcher Cover would be?

I know the feeling. Back in 2002, I had the opportunity to buy a decent mono Butcher vinyl in VG condition. The peel job was a 6/10, meaning there were places where the original glue had peeled the original cover in some areas. The store owner offered it to me for $200 and I passed because I had just been laid off from work. I wish I could go back and buy it then. 😀

Certainly one of my favorites back in the 60's and 70's. Played a unique blend--after their initial release of bluesy material called "This Was"--of what I would describe as "Renaissance rock/jazz", with an impressive string of ever-evolving records to their credit ("Stand UP", "Benefit", etc); Got a chance to see them, too, at the Fillmore West in S.F., just as "Aqualung" was released. What a stage presence was Ian Anderson--you had to see him to get the full effect! Great band, even with personnel changes. Got lots and lots of air play over the years, practically all of it their own, original music (except for an "only they could do this" version of Bach's of "Bouree"). And you know what? They are, incredibly, shamefully, NOT, in the R&R Hall of Fame, despite their legacy as an original and influential musical group! Instead, we must hold our noses as the Bangles, the Go-Go's, and all that other moronic "talent" out there, have been "enshrined"; What B.S.! Ah well, whoever said "Life's fair"?

@@h.gordonkemnitz7736 thanks for the reply. I saw them live a few weeks after this comment. My town was in their tour and managed to get tickets on time. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. But to be honest, a little disappointing at the same time, regarding Ian's singing. Yeah, I know he's old etc but, I was stupidly expecting more. Most likely, because I tried to catch up with as more of their discography as possible before the live, and most of what I listened to was prior mid 1980s.

I'd like your opinion on the rarity of a 45 record I once owned but foolishly loaned to somebody in 1976. My first father was a disc jockey in the 1950's and '60's. I was born in '57. Estranged from him since 1960, he visited me in 1966 and presented me with two small wire racks of singles he had played over the years. One was a Disc Jockey-only NOT-FOR-SALE pressing distributed to DJ's at the beginning of Beatlemania. It wasn't music, however. It was a faux Beatles interview that had the four of them giddily answering a series of standard interview questions. There was space between each recorded response for a disc jockey to ask the questions. The overall effect, of course, was to make it sound like the Beatles were giving a live interview to your friendly, local DJ. It was a plain, short single, no photography or artwork. Like I said, I lost it years ago, but the memory of it haunts me. Any idea of its rarity, should it still exist?

I hope people that equate The Beatles as valuable watch this video! At a Car Boot Sale in Essex 1997 a trader offered me Sgt Pepper on Vinyl for £25 claiming it to be a first pressing stereo copy, I felt terrible pointing out it was actually a 1977 pressing and offered £2.50! My offer was turned down and the guy watched me like a Hawk after that, 3 hours later I bumped into someone that bought it for £30 believing they had a bargain! Poor Guy!
I feel that the internet has taken the fun away from record collecting and as this video's presenter points out rare now just means expensive! Round-a-bout 2000 a charity shop local to me had a few vinyl LPs in the shop window with prices exactly the same as Record Collector 1999, condition grading was about right - my Good condition is probably someone else's Mint- the records on display didn't sell until the Manager's Husband advertised them in Record Collector.
I don't own any rare or collectable Beatles records but until TH-cam etc thought I had most (if not everything) that was released commercially on UK CD. I do keep my eye open when at Boot Sales, charity shops etc for Fan Club Christmas Singles, I met a Guy in 1995 who claimed that he had a Xmas single from either 68 or 69 that hadn't been officially released for some reason or another. I was 18 years old at the time and was impressed by this Guy's claims and more so when he went on to say that since 1981 Paul McCartney (or a representative of his) would call him in early December offering a lot of cash for this Xmas Fan Club single. I'd love to know if the Guy's claims were true and nearly 30 years laters if he ever sold it to Macca?
I guess that the internet has made listening to rare stuff so easy that there is barely anything left in The Beatles back catalogue that hasn't been heard, the Anthologies and BBC Live CD's cover a lot. So I'm thinking, would "Carnival Of Light" be the rarest Beatles recording?

Could you do a video on spanish Beatles vinyl (EMI-Odeon)? It would be great to know why, for instance, my "A hard day's night" copy (translated ¡Qué noche la de aquel día!) has a light blue cover (instead the usual dark blue panel for the Beatles' pictures), and sounds so atrocious. It was made in the mid 80s, and I can tell that the quality is rock bottom. The vinyl is as thin as possible, and the sound is neither stereo or mono. Sounds like they put the guitars and vocals out of phase to create a mock stereo. They have probably zero collectible value, but it's a mistery what happenned in Spain around then.

I know I have something rare that's connected to The Beatles. I don't know if it's worth anything. It's a Beatles Fan Club record made about 9 months before they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. It's a telephone conversation with George Harrison made in March 1963, about a week after his 20th birthday. I found this record for 10 cents in a second hand store called _The Better Buy._ either in late 1968 or early 1969. It has the same thing on both sides. Unfortunately, it didn't come with a cover. It was just in a paper shelve. That store smelled so musty it sometimes took your breath away. I think it's the smell of old paperbacks. I also found The Beatles white album there in the early 70s. It was only 50 cents! I quickly realized when I got home that it was missing the second album. I finally bought a brand new copy in 1976. I have nine Beatle albums on vinyl. I went into a record store in 1993 and bought all 13 Beatles CDs at the same time.

Beatles were "iffy" in USA at first: I had Please Please Me album on Veejay records, She Loves You single on Swan. Capitol records finally decided the Beatles were a "thing" & put out their albums... sort of. The Beach Boys were also on Capitol records. I had an album that one side was the Beach boys and other side was Beatles and maybe some Peter and Gordon. It was white, with left side photo of Beach Boys and right side the Beatles. I am not making this up.... Maybe it was called something like "US vs UK". Have you ever heard of this?
