I've followed you for 2 years and haven't missed a video, but never commented before. Wanted to share how much your channel mean to me though, since I've had the worst year of my life this year. I had a grand mal seizure on my honeymoon, temporary memory loss and all, and when we came home I was diagnosed with epilepsy. The kicker being that I've had seizures since I was 6, not 26. They're small and it's quite an uncommon type, so no-one ever noticed, but I've been zoning out and rolling my eyes every day for all my life. It affected my concentration skills, my speech -- not being quite coherent since a seizure would interrupt me or forgetting that I was speaking --, and my listening skills. I've had tiny hallucinations, migraines, and perhaps 50 seizures a day at worst, without anyone knowing. It has been super alienating since everyone at the school I went too (including some teachers) thought I "didn't listen" on purpose, or assumed I was an idiot or a space-case. My family too, sadly. I sometimes thought my dad didn't even like me, since he would ignore me completely, as I wouldn't say anything of worth anyway. As my oldest sister put it, "everyone thought you were stupid, except me". That was after I started taking my meds, and I don't buy it one bit that she found me remotely intelligent, by the way she's treated me throughout the years. My other sister sort of took advantage of my insecurities and would gaslight me to the degree that she tried to convince my whole family that I was "attention-seeking" when a very close friend of me died 6 years ago. I always hated how I looked, who I was, and I was so ashamed of my eye-twitching that I started avoiding contact and all the negative comments made me so incredibly insecure and drove me to a really dark place. But although being diagnosed was a shock, it helped me gain enough confidence and belief in myself to break contact with my sisters and distance myself from my parents. I'm undergoing a treatment for my social phobia currently, also focusing on PTSD. It's been so overwhelming and I feel so broken yet so relieved that I think I'm on the way to finally being able to like myself. But on the bad days I really feel like your videos help me through - your passion for litterature and how you speak of it motivates me (to study, to read, to be present, to cook and all the other things I love doing), your voice and editing style calms me and I sincerely believe you've inspired me to be and do better. I love what I study but I don't think I could've finished this year without your channel, and I'm so thankful. Thank you so much for being you, hope you have a great year in 2024
oh Marie I’m so sorry to hear what you’ve been going through - you are so incredibly strong and I am so glad you decided to leave a comment, it’s so nice to meet you💙 I am beyond glad that these videos have provided a bit of comfort and I am sending you so much love and goodness for the year ahead❤️
Call me crazy but the beginning made me teary eyed lol my kids are getting older and still have their younger books they read (bookshelves full!) but they have moved on to classics and older stuff. I still find them occasionally looking at a book they used to read though so I’m glad we kept them. ❤
I felt my heart crack a little during this vlog. Sharing my empathy for Emma & others who’re making the most of a hard season of life. I also picked up Emily Wilde (yesterday, on a whim). May it fuel a mind retreat for us both. 💙❄️
I really hope you'll post your "best books of 2023" video soon. Also a worst books version would be fun as well. I really love your videos and when I first started watching your channel, I didn't even like books or reading, but you've managed to persuade me and now I've started to become a reader despite my busy schedule as a high school student. Can't wait to see what 2024 has in store for us!
Your mom seems like an amazing woman. I’m happy you are home with those that love you so much. I’m sure they are loving having you with them, are are pleased to get soft place to land. Be well!
This video is a mood and a half - going through old childhood items, building a cat palace, snow(!), it's all here. I would cry if someone made me a storybook like the Calcifer one you received. That's such a touching gift from your family. Also, I was so impressed with that excerpt from Eugene Onegin! That's going on my list, for sure. This is exactly what I needed to start 2024 on a good note. Happy New Year Emma, Calcifer and family!
Glad to see you are reconnecting with your younger self in so many ways! We change but we also stay so much of the same over the years, and sometimes remembering the older layers inside of us is exactly the salve we need. 💛
A very nostalgic video with a music theme that fits it a lot. I cried because when I went to my parents home and touch every thing I feel my childhood and youth back again from the past and revive me in some ways. We are growing Emmie and we will be far from those memories some how, keep them and keep everything 😢
Your relationship with your brother is so much like me and mine and I adore it. So many of my friends stopped being friends with their adult siblings and you and I are so lucky to still have that friendship with ours.
I just wanted to say thank you for your videos. Your honesty about what you think and feel is truly inspiring. Your videos have kept me company in really difficult times and actually helped me take some important decisions. I hope 2024 treats you as amazingly as you deserve❤
I’m so glad you got to spend some quality time with your grandma. I love seeing your videos where you talk about your relationship with her. So wholesome and joyful. ❤
The book with Calcifer's pictures is such a great idea! 😍 When the video started, I thought you had to be at your parents' house to care for someone. Turns out you are there to care for yourself and that is a very smart and loving thing to do. Your parents' and your dog's presence, nature all around (eventually snow) can only bring good vibes to your lovely soul. ❄❄❄❄ Hope you'll enjoy "She and her cat" and Junji Ito's Cat diary. I did. ❄❄❄❄
this video screams EMMA, everything from building a club for her cat to organizing her childhood room and being with her brother, thank you for this video, and PLEASE make a 2023 bloopers
Keep Calcifer away from that beautiful tea pot his history with glass kettles not so hot. LOL! I'm so annoyed that it is Jan.2 WITH NO SNOW ON THE GROUND! We usually have 3 ft of the lovely stuff. Happy New Year ! Wishing happiness truly Emmie.
Emmie this video makes me miss my hometown and my childhood home....sometimes you just really need a break, and to go to a place from the past for it, there's a restorative quality to that... Happy new year!!
i'd love to see a video where you talk about where to start reading russian literature!! i find tolstoy and dostoevsky very intimidating and would love to know what you'd recommend
emma!! i always get so happy when i see you posted. sometimes my anxiety really drains my energy and i end up feeling like i can't even do simple daily tasks. your vlogs are some of the only things that give me energy to get up and have a more productive day. and in the days i really can't do much, they comfort me
I've seen The Grand Budapest Hotel around 50 times and even have that book cover as a poster on my wall. I'm a big fan of Zweig's works that influenced the director, particularly Beware of Pity and The World of Yesterday.❤❤❤
I keep forgetting that you have a thing for hotels as the setting for a book--you've recommended a few to me that I've enjoyed immensely. You MUST MUST read Amor Towles' A Gentleman in Moscow. You will love it I promise!! Happy New Year! Edit: major props to Emma's brother--I found out about Pit Vipers from you and bought them for my 20 year old nephew and they were a huge hit!! Thank you!
January is usually my favourite month to read and chill, but this year I've had to abandon my family and go on the run from the Reading Challenge police for my crimes against Goodreads in 2023.
The Sorrow of Angels is one of my all time Favourites (still onto reading Kalmans other works) and was what got me into Icelandic Literature. Wishing you much joy with the book and a lovely start to 2024!
That Calcifer book is the sweetest present I've ever seen. Your family is amazing. I can't wait to hear your thought on The Sorrow of Angels, I love this trilogy with my whole heart. It's good to see Evee again, she's always so happy. I hope that staying in your childhood home will help and you'll feel better. ❤I wish you an your loved ones a very happy New Year. 😊
It's so sweet to see your family making you such nice, heartfelt gifts. They know you, they know what you love and go for it. The Book of Calcifer is amazing! Happy new year Emma💘
The passages from Pushkin that you've read - I've just read them today in Russian, and it was so cool to hear them in English (and from you!) Hope you're doing better now that you're home 🧡
I have a feeling the Book of the Month people love your skits just as much as we do and are looking forward to what Book Man will come up with next (I am, anyway) 😃 Happy new year, Emma! I hope 2024 will be kind to you. Sending lots of good vibes! ❤
Happy new year, i hope you will feel better soon 💗 take some time healing at home and diving into some audibles while crafting. Love you lots and thank you for consistent and amazing content!!
happy new year to you too emma! this vlog worked like a cozy little blanket, as always (i've kinda been going through it these past few months so it helped me, like, a MASSIVE amount to get out of bed). your mom's book of calcifer gift was sooo cuteeee, girl i'm telling you, embrace the crazy cat lady persona, it suits you so well😽
Fun fact: The Grand Budapest Hotel was shot in my hometown and the hotel is actually a department store that has been closed for about 15 years - it's where I bought my favourite video game and my first Ghibli DVD! Nowadays they rent the building out for movies, tv shows, theater productions and fashion shows but you can also visit it
dear emma, could you pls have a video on how you organise and plan your stuff? i'm always amazed by how disciplined and organised you are, and it's also 1 of my new year goals to be more disciplined and have a weekly schedule/rule of life of sorts. any tips on how to ACTUALLY stick to it for those of us who're naturally (too) free-spirited (haha) will really help!!
calcifer just sitting and watching you clean is such an orange boy activity. My orange boy does the same thing. He sees us cleaning and instantly turns into the project manager. Also, mango, my kitty, always looks at the tv when calcifer comes on like “there’s another one of me?!”

"I was doing really really quite poorly. I just decided to leave 🤗" SO real of you, perfectly captures the young adulthood experience really
„The Book of Calcifer“ is such a lovely gift from your mum! 🫶🏻 Cozy video with this calming childhood home vibes! 😊

Making my day…happy new years😀
calcifer just sitting and watching you clean is such an orange boy activity. My orange boy does the same thing. He sees us cleaning and instantly turns into the project manager. Also, mango, my kitty, always looks at the tv when calcifer comes on like “there’s another one of me?!”
The vibes in this video, Emma. ❤❤ So glad to see you back in your element.
What wonderful gifts. The book of Calcifer is a treat. You have such a thoughtful family 💫 Happy New Year. I love your videos 💛
I am an older viewer and new to your channel. I watch every morning with breakfast. I enjoy everything you decide to do. I am writing to recommend Jeanette Winterson's book Written on the Body Published by Knopf in 1993. I love your music selections and your appreciation for nature in all its forms. Thank You!

I'm happy for you that you got the snow you wanted. It doesn't do that in my shire but it's chilly and your video warmed my fuzzy little heart. Happy New Year!
