This video has a lot more success than the previous one I made ("From the Flight Deck" in March 2017), which took a lot more effort to edit. It turns out to be a viral video and with that come the armchair professionals. The number one comment I get says I used too much yoke and created what we call "pilot induced oscillations". Is it true then? Yes it is, at least to some extent. Can it be done better? I'm sure it can. I fly gliders and aerobatic airplanes, I would say I use smaller and smoother inputs on the flight controls than many of my colleagues, but in gusty conditions we need to use more agressive responses on the flight controls (see the autopilot doing a lot of rapid inputs during the first 3 seconds of the video). What this video doesn't show very well is the turbulence level, which was fairly high. If the autopilot needs these rapid yoke corrections, you bet we will need them too when we handfly the airplane. Ask any 737 pilot how smooth the conditions are when the yoke moves like that (while the autopilot is engaged), refering to those first 3 seconds of the video. As a Captain, my job is to ensure the safe operation of the airplane, keep it within parameters, fly a stabilised approach (which is defined by a set of criteria, none include how much yoke is used but instead, being at the right airspeed, glide slope / loc displacement kept to a minimum, rate of descent not exceeding 1000fpm, etc). As for the landing itself, the aim is not for a smooth landing (not to say that we have to smash the airplane on the ground), but instead to land within the touchdown zone and ideally on the big rectangular blocks on the runway (painted in white, see at 2:12 in the video), on the centreline, at the right speed, with wings level and if possible decrabed (nose pointing down the runway). Which is what I did here. Can it be done better? Once again, yes it can. But probably not by the professional FSX pilots who are eager to comment how they could have flown this approach "much better". Second most frequent comment says the wind is not 25 knots. This video is uploaded in 1440p, enough resolution to be able to see the wind arrow displayed on the ND, showing between 24 and 28 knots during the whole final approach. Fly safe everyone

Good landing. I can see why "armchair" pilots say "over-controlling". ILS and autopilot system, and autopilots generally, are quite clever at reacting to trends rather than immediate and fine control. But as you get nearer the runway and go to manual, the corrections of buffeting and decrease/increase in speed or direction changes becomes more urgent to correct. It is debatable whether you need to be absolutely precisely in line every inch of the way on manual. In the long distant past I was mostly taught to react to the trend, not to every bump and minor deviation. But once, an instructor told me to go downwind at precisely 100 knots in turbulence with NO deviation at all. Of course this was impossible. After being berated about this I invited the examiner to demonstrate. He was far worse than I was! He shut up after that. The trend is in my view far more important than correcting for every tiny deviation. But there are a variety of methods and each to his own. Provided you arrive at the threshold pointing in the right direction, and safely, at the right speed, give or take a couple of knots, you are doing absolutely fine.
You have to understand that there is also some element of anticipation. I don't think hes fighting with them, I like to think of it more like guessing what the airplane is going to do next and anticipating. When I'm flying in windy conditions I do the same. Its part of feeling out what the airplane is doing and staying ahead of it. Obviously its a little different because in the C172 our final approach speed is (generally) 65kts.
@Tom A: You're a troll or incapable of understanding that vacuum mounted action camera doesn't require any attention. That's why it's called "action cam" - you do the action and do not worry about camera.
Being a fligh simulator pilot since 2009, I have no idea why people are commenting about the yoke movement. When taking a close look at the PFD, you can see how the strong crosswinds are constantly destabilizing the plane and it's unbelievable how well the pilot is executing to keep the plane inside the glideslope and the localizer. All those movements are just simply fighting the wind resulting in safe and smooth landing right on the touchdown zone.
I know!! I cant stand these arm chair pilots that think they know best. I dont care if you can fly the PMDG 737, the real thing is different. I actually find flying in real life to be easier than in the sim.

I'm not a pilot but I do love commercial airliners. I'm always amazed how many negative comments are posted. A few people are going to give credit to your flying ability but nobody ever thinks about pilot responsibly to the passengers. A very well flown approach and a very nice video angle. I don't watch many cockpit videos (the flight deck is my other home), but this one popped up on my recommended list. The "PC Pilots" make themselves known by their comments regarding the amount of control inputs. To those of us who actually leave the ground, it is known that even a subtle change in aircraft trend (when flying in VMC) can be sensed before becoming apparent to the casual observer (a kinesthetic sense). A pilot who is comfortable with his/her machine will be able to sense these uncommanded changes to pitch and roll very quickly and will be able to make an appropriate control input to offset the developing trend. This becomes even more obvious as an aircraft's size ( mass) and resulting inertia increase. For proof, watch the video carefully and note how the smooth the aircraft's flight path and speed remain throughout the approach.
TheFlightPractitioner ok I'm no expert, I do fly rc planes line of sight and fpv. It seems there is alot on movement on the yoke to a small amount that the plane reacts. I refer to that as exponential. Is there any adjustment to make the control more or less sensitive? That way a more subtitle yoke correction would be required to keep the plane on the intended course. Or is this just on such a large scale that its just the way it is and it can't be made anymore responsive.

As a citizen of that small Italian city i’ve been in many 737 landing here but I’ve never seen a landing like that! That is so smooth the camera barely moves! I guess it’s hard to land like that because the landing of the planes I was in were pretty annoyingly abrupt! Congratulations to this guy here, I know nothing about flying but good job!👏👏👏
I'm not a pilot nor am I an armchair pilot. All I can say is great job on the landing! Hats off to the men and women who wrestle with the yoke to carry hundreds to their destination safely.
RootedHat it’s best with 2 hands to quickly turn the wheel a lot in the event of an emergency, but you don’t really pull/roll the yoke aggressively and you NEED one other for the throttle.

Flight simulator is a game, this is the real deal - the Captain of this 737 showed exceptional skill, judgement and commitment when landing in those challenging conditions.
The whole corrections are incredible and destroys my imagin of flying a plane. If you ever drive an old tractor, you know what it is seems to be like. I know we cant equate it. Respect. And very nice viewing.

Doesn't Xplane prepare simulators for actual pilot training? I have maxium 10 hours in flight simulators, but i could say that one can learn the basics of landing and takeoff, easily. And if we talk of a program that prepares irl pilots and uses advanced realism with wind and such, it has to be atleast somewhat realistic. Does not make anyone a pilot, but has great capabilities to train one, and i think that is the point that these simulator gamers are making here. In theory, they could do this and that, and they know how to, but aren't still qualified and they know it.

Marco Brando They are most likely on the ILS approaching the runway. The aircraft already has all the information for landing so once they get close enough to the runway the aircraft says that.
Apart from a smooth and safe flight the best part I find as a learning pilot is the landing. Sometimes the trickier conditions make for a more satisfying landing.
Very nice landing, captain. This is my home airport and I have landed here (as a SLF ;-)) hundreds of times on several aircrafts (airbuses, glorious AZ maddogs, Embraers and now 737). As a passenger I believe Brindisi has an easy landing runway, but sometimes it could be very tricky because of the northern crosswind, and believe me, you can feel it if you are seated in the back of a 737 (MDs were better)! This was perfect, just perfect. In a future situations like this, I hope to fly with you, captain, even if I'll never know...

Was there last year, you are going to love it! Try to go to Lecce or Otranto in the south if you can! I really loved it, and I recommend trying Burrata 200%! Also be ready, when I took off from Paris it was about 15°C, and when I landed in Brindisi it was about 43°C! Anyway, have a nice trip! :)

I had a private pilot student do that with a yoke and I fixed it in two minutes. Btw, I have 22 years airline experience, 12-13000 hours, numerous type ratings. On occasion I fly with someone that jockeys the yoke like that, and it makes it rougher. Now if you are on an airplane like the MD88 which has control tabs, that's an entirely different story. My first reaction was, like many, wow, look at that yoke. :)

Can anyone tell me how responsive the yoke controls actually are?. In landings like this you see a lot of movement in the yoke from the captain but to my eye there doesn't seem to be an immediate, corresponding response from the aircraft!. Thanks :)
I think he meant how quickly the hydraulics in the control surfaces respond to movement of the yoke and pedals. There has to be some delay in there, compared to the steering wheel of a car.
useless movements, when you learn to pilot a glider, quickly the instructor shows you how they are unusefull. the respons time on the axes is approximativly 1s. the only consequence is to improve the draft.

Sick video, just landed for my first time is a Cessna 172S the other day, crazy intense. Can't imagine putting this thing on the ground! IMO, this is a really smooth approach and landing, executed very well. Even if there were pilot induced vibrations, they were much smaller and certainly smoother than the ones that would have occured with a smoother input.
There are two types of pilot. Those that ride the waves in the air and those that fight them. You are a fighter! All those control surface joints need greasing now.
Funny how the only people complaining about this are the only ones who have never flown a 737. I know it might be difficult to understand but these planes handle a LOT differently than light SEPs...

As a citizen of that small Italian city i’ve been in many 737 landing here but I’ve never seen a landing like that! That is so smooth the camera barely moves! I guess it’s hard to land like that because the landing of the planes I was in were pretty annoyingly abrupt! Congratulations to this guy here, I know nothing about flying but good job!👏👏👏

RootedHat it’s best with 2 hands to quickly turn the wheel a lot in the event of an emergency, but you don’t really pull/roll the yoke aggressively and you NEED one other for the throttle.

Doesn't Xplane prepare simulators for actual pilot training? I have maxium 10 hours in flight simulators, but i could say that one can learn the basics of landing and takeoff, easily. And if we talk of a program that prepares irl pilots and uses advanced realism with wind and such, it has to be atleast somewhat realistic. Does not make anyone a pilot, but has great capabilities to train one, and i think that is the point that these simulator gamers are making here. In theory, they could do this and that, and they know how to, but aren't still qualified and they know it.
Knowing you're flying my plane would be most assuring. You stuck that landing with an exclamation point.

Marco Brando They are most likely on the ILS approaching the runway. The aircraft already has all the information for landing so once they get close enough to the runway the aircraft says that.

Apart from a smooth and safe flight the best part I find as a learning pilot is the landing. Sometimes the trickier conditions make for a more satisfying landing.

This is my home airport and I have landed here (as a SLF ;-)) hundreds of times on several aircrafts (airbuses, glorious AZ maddogs, Embraers and now 737).
As a passenger I believe Brindisi has an easy landing runway, but sometimes it could be very tricky because of the northern crosswind, and believe me, you can feel it if you are seated in the back of a 737 (MDs were better)!
This was perfect, just perfect.
In a future situations like this, I hope to fly with you, captain, even if I'll never know...

Was there last year, you are going to love it! Try to go to Lecce or Otranto in the south if you can! I really loved it, and I recommend trying Burrata 200%!
Also be ready, when I took off from Paris it was about 15°C, and when I landed in Brindisi it was about 43°C!

I had a private pilot student do that with a yoke and I fixed it in two minutes. Btw, I have 22 years airline experience, 12-13000 hours, numerous type ratings. On occasion I fly with someone that jockeys the yoke like that, and it makes it rougher. Now if you are on an airplane like the MD88 which has control tabs, that's an entirely different story. My first reaction was, like many, wow, look at that yoke. :)

Can anyone tell me how responsive the yoke controls actually are?.
In landings like this you see a lot of movement in the yoke from the captain but to my eye there doesn't seem to be an immediate, corresponding response from the aircraft!.

I think he meant how quickly the hydraulics in the control surfaces respond to movement of the yoke and pedals. There has to be some delay in there, compared to the steering wheel of a car.
The reason you don’t see the plane moving is because the pilot is countering the movements with the yoke inputs to keep the plane steady.
useless movements, when you learn to pilot a glider, quickly the instructor shows you how they are unusefull. the respons time on the axes is approximativly 1s. the only consequence is to improve the draft.

IMO, this is a really smooth approach and landing, executed very well. Even if there were pilot induced vibrations, they were much smaller and certainly smoother than the ones that would have occured with a smoother input.
