I. LOVE this movie. The whole "mousey girl gets corrupted" thing was done so well, you really feel for the guy but understand where she was coming from. Also, I adored the "lightbulb" edit, one of my favourite bits of the movie.
Nop didn't feel anything for him, he didn't respected her boundaries, look down on the actresses because compared to them his girlfriend was 'pure' 'not like them' when they were all decent people doing a job, then when the girl tells him she wants to do something he gets possesive telling her she can't do what she wants just because he says so, all in all he was a dick.
Absolutely loved this movie. I like how everyone (except the two villains) were generally likable and human. Even the filmmaker kid was just young and dumb.
I dunno if I would call Lorraine likeable... Found herself a convenient loophole to get some of that BBC while her cucked boyfriend is forced to film it. And then she freaks out only caring about herself as usual and runs off like a clucking chicken once shit hits the fan.

But then you mix in that she's violent, (probably) psychopathic, and psychotic and you just end up feeling like "oh, ya this was never going to end well for anyone." I feel like the audience is, in many ways, the father in Pearl. Stuck watching this all unfold in utter horror.

The crime was even relatable, not the act of actually killing someone, but the feelings behind the murders. Her fear of abandonment with the picture boy, and her anger towards him -- as well as the jealousy and feelings she had towards Mitsy.
Jenna Ortega has turned into quite the scream queen. She’s got such a great screen presence. I’m really looking forward to seeing her as the new Wednesday Adams

All of the character's deaths were foreshadowed. Some examples RJ being the artsy director, has an artsy death with the blood red on the headlights. Britney Snow at the very beginning walking out the door of a building with a gator painted on it.
The thing I love about this movie, most of the (non murderous) characters are pretty nice. I know it’s less of a thing these days, but slasher archetypes demand the fodder be easy to root against, but I’m glad to see characters I don’t want to see killed. Makes everything more intense and uncomfortable.

It's surprising that this movie didn't get an "X" rating. Although not all X rated movies were porn, the reason that rating was so tainted was that it was so restrictive for who could watch those movies that a lot of directors used it as a way to distribute softcore porn. One of the first and best X rated films was Midnight Cowboy, although it was re-rated as "R" much later. It was originally rated X due to the homosexual themes present in the film, but it's got great chemistry between the main characters. It's definitely worth watching if for nothing else but Dustin Hoffman's performance as Ratso.

I just saw Pearl in the theater. At the time i didn't remember everything about X. it's worth watching both movies together. When i saw X, i didn't realize Maxine was also Pearl, as well as younger Pearl in the second movie.
Definitely a classic horror film with lots of throwback moments to Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre with some nods to Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci too. Super.
I love the fact that it felt like it could have been made in the 1970s. Had a real Teas Chainsaw/I Spit On Your Grave kinda feel to it. We need more movies like this that rely on great writing and not cheap devices like Jump Scares to make a movie scary.

Also I’m sure a million people have mentioned it, but Mia Goth played the lead AND the old lady. And, they started shooting the prequel “Pearl” immediately after this one.
Lots of nods to Texas Chainsaw (1974), with the layout of the old peoples' house; and the cows. Also a nod to The Shining when she axes out the wrong panel of the basement door and get her hand hurt in a similar way to how Jack N. did.
The director Ti West also directed a secret prequel film alongside this film titled "Pearl," an origin to the killer couple. Be on the look out for it's release

Fun fact , the girl that plays Maxine also plays the old lady, she also plays the old lady in the prequel that’s about out or out now , she plays the old lady when she was Maxine’s age which explains a lot in this movie. Think it’s interesting when the old man sees Maxine the first time and raring at her when the director says to stop staring at his fiancé , his face looks shocked probably casue he’s seeing his wife as a young girl again.

Apparently Ti West wrote this while thinking a lot about his fear of aging and about the value of his work, particularly that "Horror" and "P0rn" are considered low-brow because they're so often cheap or low effort, but that people working in exploitation media can still create real art while also giving people titillating or subversive "guilty" pleasures. For my part I think the way the film compares the idea of 'Fame'/'That Special Something'/'The X Factor' versus inescapable mortality - the cow on the road at the beginning, compared to Pearl in the driveway at the end - that ultimately we're meat, there are people who want to consume what we have to offer, but there is power in choosing how we exploit ourselves. Maxine's father, the preacher, is trying to make her 'famous' in order to further his message, to make her into what he wants her to be. She wants to be famous in a way that she finds more acceptable - she's willing to have her talent exploited by Wayne and the rest, because she has a hand in the method and the payout. Ultimately, Pearl is threatening to "Tell everybody" about Maxine - she'd make her known in the wrong way - and Maxine chooses the freedom of leaving the scene a mystery - keeping the secret (is my read on the ending, maybe she did go to the police, but she's been on a lot of cocaine and they might try and take her back to her Father)

One goof in production for this movie. It takes place in 1979. Missing people pictures didn't start to appear on milk cartons in until almost 1985 AND they were only missing kids, not adults.

Actually, for me, this was the worst choice for song. It let's you know right away that something is off. Had I edited this I would've used We May Never Pass This Way Again by Seals & Croft. Other than that this film is almost flawless

I know this might be a little on the obscure side. But you asked if there was a horror porn genre. There is actually one... of sorts. Although it's more horror softcore porn, and very European centric, although most of the films were dubbed, and none of it is even close to as cheesy as American porn was back in the day. It took the classier Indie approach, the same one the college kid wannabe director wanted to go in this film. The three top practitioners of it were the legendary Jess Franco from Spain, who made a series of low level masterpieces, even Tarantino and Almadovar are fans. Some of his standouts are Vampyros Lesbos, She Killed In Ecstasy, Venus In Furs, Succubus, Justine, A VIrgin Among The Living Dead, Eugenie ...and the Story of Her Journey into Perversion, Ilsa The Wicked Warden, The Demons, The Perverse Countess, and two of his films that do actually veer into hardcore (but easily edited out) are the kind of genius Lorna The Exorcist and Female Vampire. Then there's the cult arthouse softcore horror director from France, the profoundly underrated Jean Rollin, who's lifelong obsession was making dreamy, haunting, poetic lesbian vampire films, with his standout films being, Fascination, The Living Dead Girl, Lips Of Blood, The Iron Rose, Two Orphan Vampires, Shiver Of The Vampires, Grapes Of Death, I actually think Mrs. Movies would end up enjoying these films a little. They're beautiful to look at and quite classy. Then there's sleaze meister extraordinaire from Italy, Joe D'Amato. Known of his iconic often banned cannibal Video Nasties Anthropophagus and Beyond The Darkness. But the main bulk of his career came from directing trashy pron hybrids. With perhaps his finest achievement being the damn near hypnotic Erotic Nights Of The Living Dead, yes... a softcore zombie film. He also made Emmanuele & The Last Cannibals, and Papaya Love Goddess Of The Cannibals. The rest are too filthy to mention or are just straight softcore with no porn. So yeah... if you guys are feeling up to it. Give a few of them a try. I'd love to see both of your reactions. They're not that bad, and easy to edit around. They all have that 70's horror feel, with very little of the scuzzy 70's porn feel. With many of Franco's films feeling almost like a 70's psychedelic horror versions of 50 Shades Of Gray, lol. I highly recommend them all. A quick sidenote, Tarantino used a little bit of the music from Vampyros Lesbos in Jackie Brown, which you guys also definitely need to check out as well.

The only problem I have with this movie is the title. I always think of 1995's Citizen X about Russia's most notorious serial killer. Gorram, that was a good film.

Britney Snow getting eaten by the gator was the most brutal scene for me. That's one of the worst ways I can imagine to die.

Ultimately, Pearl is threatening to "Tell everybody" about Maxine - she'd make her known in the wrong way - and Maxine chooses the freedom of leaving the scene a mystery - keeping the secret (is my read on the ending, maybe she did go to the police, but she's been on a lot of cocaine and they might try and take her back to her Father)
i kinda wanted the blond girl to survive more then the final girl. At least she had some personality and wasnt that annoying!
I was rooting for the final girl to get killed the whole movie.
Yeah she was interesting enough that I wanted to know more about her background and how she got into the industry.

One goof in production for this movie. It takes place in 1979. Missing people pictures didn't start to appear on milk cartons in until almost 1985 AND they were only missing kids, not adults.

The fact Mia goth played the young lady and old lady pearl and they basically pointed the similarities of pearl and the young one throughout the times they did speak is interesting. And watching it I never caught on to the fact it’s the same actress I just thought the old lady miss being young wild and free

Actually, for me, this was the worst choice for song. It let's you know right away that something is off. Had I edited this I would've used We May Never Pass This Way Again by Seals & Croft. Other than that this film is almost flawless

:) The promess of this movie , horror and porn in some Texas Chainsaw Massacre-ish settings. I felt very weird when i realised i actually cared about those characters and their ambitions etc.. Characters and dialogues in this movie are great!

I know this might be a little on the obscure side. But you asked if there was a horror porn genre. There is actually one... of sorts. Although it's more horror softcore porn, and very European centric, although most of the films were dubbed, and none of it is even close to as cheesy as American porn was back in the day. It took the classier Indie approach, the same one the college kid wannabe director wanted to go in this film. The three top practitioners of it were the legendary Jess Franco from Spain, who made a series of low level masterpieces, even Tarantino and Almadovar are fans. Some of his standouts are Vampyros Lesbos, She Killed In Ecstasy, Venus In Furs, Succubus, Justine, A VIrgin Among The Living Dead, Eugenie ...and the Story of Her Journey into Perversion, Ilsa The Wicked Warden, The Demons, The Perverse Countess, and two of his films that do actually veer into hardcore (but easily edited out) are the kind of genius Lorna The Exorcist and Female Vampire. Then there's the cult arthouse softcore horror director from France, the profoundly underrated Jean Rollin, who's lifelong obsession was making dreamy, haunting, poetic lesbian vampire films, with his standout films being, Fascination, The Living Dead Girl, Lips Of Blood, The Iron Rose, Two Orphan Vampires, Shiver Of The Vampires, Grapes Of Death, I actually think Mrs. Movies would end up enjoying these films a little. They're beautiful to look at and quite classy. Then there's sleaze meister extraordinaire from Italy, Joe D'Amato. Known of his iconic often banned cannibal Video Nasties Anthropophagus and Beyond The Darkness. But the main bulk of his career came from directing trashy pron hybrids. With perhaps his finest achievement being the damn near hypnotic Erotic Nights Of The Living Dead, yes... a softcore zombie film. He also made Emmanuele & The Last Cannibals, and Papaya Love Goddess Of The Cannibals. The rest are too filthy to mention or are just straight softcore with no porn. So yeah... if you guys are feeling up to it. Give a few of them a try. I'd love to see both of your reactions. They're not that bad, and easy to edit around. They all have that 70's horror feel, with very little of the scuzzy 70's porn feel. With many of Franco's films feeling almost like a 70's psychedelic horror versions of 50 Shades Of Gray, lol. I highly recommend them all. A quick sidenote, Tarantino used a little bit of the music from Vampyros Lesbos in Jackie Brown, which you guys also definitely need to check out as well.

The only problem I have with this movie is the title. I always think of 1995's Citizen X about Russia's most notorious serial killer. Gorram, that was a good film.

Very surprised to see that Chelsea Wolfe did some of the music for this film. They, the people that did this film, must have been very persuasive to be able to nab her for a smaller film.
