    This movie reminds me of movie back in the 90’s called “Fallen” with Denzel Washington and John Goodman. Basically a demon would jump into peoples bodies and would terrorize them.

      Gotta say, I much prefer Fallen to Smile, Fallen is kinda a low key classic imo. Smile is fun, but …. it’s a massive pet peeve when people try to convince people they’re not nuts, while acting nuts, and aggressive, then seem surprised when people don’t believe them, and that seemed to happen quite a bit in The Smile. If the main character wasn’t a medical professional in a psych ward, I’d be more sympathetic, but she’d know better than most.
      Seems like within the movie’s rules, killing yourself is your best, (maybe only) bet of stopping the thing.

      As I recall, "Fallen" ended with that... except, unknown to the protagonist, the demon could also jump to *animals,* so it was able to continue the cycle.
      And with this one, like Frictional Games' "Penumbra: Black Plague", we know that the entity can alter your perception of reality - so who's to say it couldn't show someone their committing suicide while alone as a trick?

    I actually loved that they went with the super bleak, depressing ending.
    Usually with horror movies, most of them have the "happy ending" where the main protagonist finally overcomes the evil or rises to the occasion to become victorious in some sort of way.
    In this movie, I fully was expecting the ending where she did overcome her own trauma and lit the demon on fire and then she broke the curse or whatever and the credits roll when she is safe and sound. However, that definitely did not happen and left the theater quite grief struck.
    I had sort of the same feeling (not as intense) after watching Speak No Evil (if you know you know). For me, there is definitely a new sense of feeling from watching certain horror movies nowadays (especially from Ari Aster) where being scared or frightened is actually the least of problems. The feeling of grief is such a far scarier thing for me because it hits on a different level. I can't say that I enjoy it, but I suppose that is what a horror movie is supposed to do, make you uncomfortable. And for that I can respect it.

    • @drlee2
      @drlee2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Same here. The ending worked because the writers didn't go for the cliche "monster defeated by the protagonist" happy ending. It was a hopeless scenario from the beginning. When I they showed her "defeat" the entity, I was like here goes another unexplained copout happy ending, but thankfully the writers didn't go that direction.

    The thing is that the main character tried to deal with her trauma alone. Her "solution" to the curse was literally to isolate herself, which is not what people who suffer from a traumatic experience/mental illness should do. Every time someone mentionned the passing of her mother, she's changed subject. During the whole movie she's refusing to let her family/boyfriend/boss(friend)/psychiatrist help her. Imo in makes sense that the monster wins at the end.

    What 'Mrs. Movies' was saying at the end struck me as so , so true. I deal with mental illness and also had substance abuse/addiction issues for many years. Ive been in recovery (for both issues) and doing well for many years now but there is definitely a level where you cant escape, not only just the stigma of mental illness and of addiction but even more than the stigma, is being unable to escape the things you've done. mental illness can make you behave erratically and do things that can be hurtful to others. There are so many things ive done that i wish i could take back.. treating people you love poorly and neglecting relationships due to addiction or just being in a bad place mentally... even when you 'come back' from that, the people around you dont look at you the same... whether its broken trust or people just being wary and walking on eggshells around you, the way you behave when you are dealing with mental issues has long lasting effects. you can just say 'hey im better now so forget about all this shitty stuff i did because i wouldnt have done it if i wasnt dealing with _____" mental illness doesnt give you a carte blanc on bad behavior ... not that it should, we all have to be responsible for our actions of course, but it DOES make it especially difficult to deal with in the aftermath of a struggle... its hard enough to get your head on straight again and actually recover and maintain wellness when you have mental illness, and then at the same time the difficulty is compounded by having to pick up the peices of broken relationships or even if the relationship is able to mend ok you may still live with the shame and guilt of your past actions. (sometimes you feel even more guilty when people DO forgive you when you know they really shoulnt for all you've done)

    • @Wraiven22
      @Wraiven22 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Very well said. It can make it so much harder to make amends when people you care about sometimes keep reminding you of your past and the most shameful parts of it… but I’ve also been on the other end and it’s challenging to forget when someone really hurts you too, even if they’ve changed for the better. It gets better with time but things are never really the same a lot of the time, and that sucks.

    Great horror film, one of the best of the last few years. Rose being doomed was a good ending, imo. I thought her defeating the entity with fire would have been so cheesy and cliche. Also, the movie hinted at Rose’s fate in the early scene with her paranoid patient Carl. The irony of her reassuring him that he wasn’t going to die and it was all in his head, then she spent the whole movie trying to convince everyone what she was seeing was real and everyone was telling her it was only because of her trauma as a child.

    I can't recall if it was mentioned with the one survivor, but it appears that as the days go on, the reality bending powers of the demon get stronger. By the day that Rose attempted to outwit it, it was futile as she couldn't trust her senses. In this sense, the movie is very similar to Oculus. Other films similar to this one include The Ring, It Follows, Hereditary, and Truth Or Dare (2018). It seems like the writer(s) just took the best parts of those films and crafted them into their own film.. and it really works here. It's a similar writing concept to A Classic Horror Story (2021) which basically took plot elements straight from classic horror films and positioned them so that they flowed as one continuous narrative and it worked well there, too.

    I get wanting to take the "stigma" ending, but even with losing everything and everyone in her life, it would've still relatively felt like a cop out ending. Far too easy. She could've just moved and started a new life, doing some other work. I think the ending they went with works very well. You can't escape it. It's not under your control. You're not the special one. I imagine that everyone before her went through all of what she did and met that same terrible fate (except the guy in prison who took the only other real option that still gets the stigmatized fate), thinking there was another solution. At the end of the day, she was dealing with an ancient evil that's seen it all.

    • @Hooga89
      @Hooga89 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The point of the ending is to continue the ambiguity of whether this entire thing is a metaphor for mental illness or something supernatural. You cannot really know whether what she saw at the end is real or if it is all in her head and that she simply inherited severe suicidal depression from her mother, this is really a large part of the horror aspect of the movie to begin with.

    • @HunterSThompson123
      @HunterSThompson123 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The ending is perfect as it is and clearly it's not to just make money as a lot of people, you included, didn't like the bleakness of it. The "money maker" ending would have been where she solves it by conquering her fear and defeating the trauma. I personally think that would have been cliché and disappointing. One of the most important elements of effective horror is hopelessness, which elevated Hereditary to greatness.

    I really don't know why she lied to the widow in that scene - she should have prefaced *everything* with "The girl he committed suicide in front of a week or so ago? She committed suicide in front of me in a *very* similar manner, and now I worry I may be next, as I suspect a pattern is at play. Could I get more information from you to either confirm or assuage my fears?"
    Oh, for another great horror movie, watch "Lights Out" - you'll *love* the character dynamics in that one! The ending, though, was a focus group ending that didn't like the original one, which is also why it's also a fairly short movie.

    Trauma is the metaphor that the horror it's built on but in the story this monster is very real. It's not even identified as a demon and if it is actually a demon then it's still physical in some way. I'm pretty sure the Thing thrives on murder just as much if not more. The man in prison is alive but he is living it 24 7.
    The monster doesn't make people commit suicid it just kills their body in front of it's next target.
    The scariest part is the only way to escape it appears to actually kill yourself, which it might just let you do because i doubt it would stop it and probably would just make it stronger like it might get from the murders.

    In a screwed up away, the entity is almost trying to help them. It corners a person with deep trauma and forces them to face it. Perhaps It is only after their moment of revelation about their past trauma that it enters them and forces them to kill themselves so that the entity's "gift" can be spread to another. That's why people kill themselves after varying amounts of time, some people attain enlightenment faster or slower than others. That is also why they smile.If you wish to deflect from your own trauma, you have the option to kill someone publicly to transfer the "gift" in a different way, but your life in society is over.
    In terms of ways to beat the Entity, it is possessing the body of the person who is committing suicide. Perhaps the target could hold up a mirror just before the moment of the suicide so that the Entity sees the victim it is controlling commit suicide in the reflection of the mirror, and the curse would attach to the Entity itself, the spell backfiring on its caster.

    I think the movie would have been better if it ended after the boyfriend said "I'll stay with you forever" as she slowly realizes the trauma of her mother and the demon would stay with her forever, and she would have to live never knowing if it would come back. Even the name of the movie "Smile" makes sense with her having to live a life where she has to force a smile to fit in and appear well to others.
    Mrs. Movies opinion of this is basically similar to the one I have on Hereditary. I would have thought it better if all the fantastical elements in that were not real and it were just about a schizophrenic person.

    You are the first person I've heard that had a simulate takeaway. I think the movie sucked and completely sends a terrible message about mental health and trauma.
    The movie is a meditation on mental illness and trauma. and how it can be dormant in someone and how it can pass from generation to generation. It seemed like it was setting itself up with the message that there were only 2 ways to deal with trauma. 1.) to pass it to someone else (killing someone random and spreading it before it kills you) or to be strong enough to confront trauma and stopping the cycle before it overtakes you or someone else.. but the ending really ruins it as her attempt to confront it fails, and it just passes on again (an effort for keeping a sequel open) which leaves a very depressing feeling that she should have just went in the woods ending her life before anyone could be witness.. which then leaves the viewer with the message that the only way to escape trauma and mental illness is through suicide. It's a terrible message from a movie that seemed to want to really dive into the world of mental illness

    This movie was one I felt needed to be seen in theaters because in the theater, it really freaked me out. I've never cried from a movie before Smile.
    Edit: I think the point of the movie is to say you need to deal with mental illness, but you can't just do it all in one big "hero" moment. It has to take time. To be clear, I agree that her living past it would have been much more interesting.
    Edit Edit: In the advertising for this movie when she's listening to the audio, they changed the scene a bit to just have a face, so I was expecting just that in theaters, but when they switched it up to be a big ol jump scare, I got freaked out.

      that trauma has to be confronted and not supressed has been my experience, the people I have known who confront the people who caused their trauma have actually gotten over it.
      I knew one person who was going to a therapist who was telling them to not confront their trauma causer. They were getting worse and worse so I recommended confrontation. Now they are slowly pulling out of their downward spiral.
      Obviously this is not always possible since the causer might be already dead, if the movie had ended in front of the burning house it would have been an amazing representation of those cases ending well.

    I think the ending would've worked much better with just a few small changes:
    1) She realizes she needs to be alone while still in the middle of the hospital (rather than in the parking lot) so that she has to run and dodge through a ton of people on her way out - with more and more of them showing the Smile face.
    2) She needs to NOT call her cop ex, but instead he starts calling her (because of her speeding away from the hospital), and she keeps ignoring his calls. Crucially, she never TELLS him about needing to be alone at the end.
    3) He shows up at the cabin at the end NOT because she told him where she was going, but because he was worried and had a friend in the police department track her cell phone location.
    This way, neither she nor he come off as idiots who could've avoided this final fate. Instead, they both do what they think is right, but tragically it's not enough.
