During an interview, Osgood Perkins recalled a story from production where he learned Nicolas Cage has a particular skill that he says no other actor possesses: the ability to recognize how high or low he is able to speak without messing up the audio. According to Perkins: "The sound guy came over to me one day...(he) comes up to me a couple of days into Nic being on set and he's like 'Oz, I've never seen anything like it. When Nic is mic'd, I'm watching the dials, when Nic goes big, he goes *right* to the line. Anything more, a decibel or two over that, and it would be hard to use. Then he goes down, he goes soft and his whispering and he's barely talking, he goes right to the line. Anything past that line, you wouldn't be able to use it. He knows where the lines are. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen in my life'."

Funfact: longlegs whispers "cuckoo" because it's a bird the gets into other bird's nests, eats their eggs and kills the owners befores stealing their home.

Cool story. Or you could just take Cage's own words in which he says he took it from his mother who was mentally ill and would say that out of the blue.

    • @je7055
      @je7055 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Some species of cuckoo lay their eggs alongside the eggs of another species in another bird's nest, and that host bird will incubate the egg and raise the cuckoo hatchling along with its own. So not quite as dark as that, but obviously you're right in the broad sense (and oftentimes the host's true hatchlings do starve). The cowbird exhibits the exact same technique of brood parasitism, but the poor cuckoo-an entire family of species rather than one species-is culturally synonymous with it, even though most cuckoo species hatch and raise their own young.

Favorite things I’ve noticed after multiple views of this movie:
-In Longlegs’ interrogation recording, he says, “and you’ll be there, and you’ll be there, and you’ll be there”; he is speaking directly to agent Browning, Carter, and Harker (in that order)
-the opening POV is actually from the veiled doll in the passenger seat
-Lee’s mom tells her “I kept all of your things” which is the name of the second chapter in the movie
-“Come on Down” from The Price Is Right playing as Lee opens the basement door for the first time
-Longlegs’ electric guitar in the basement. You hear it playing when Lee is opening her mailbox, and you see him buying earplugs for it at the hardware store. Obviously so much of the metal genre is heavily influenced by satanism
-The house Lee looks to at night - and hears the guitar from - is her childhood home, as you suspected! She lives right next to her mom
-Ruby and little Lee with their matching long braids
-Carrie Anne tells Lee that she’s seen her before, which couldn’t be true unless she is talking about her doll seeing Lee when it was found in the barn (some people think Carrie Anne could be remembering seeing Lee’s mom through the doll’s eyes which is also a cool possibility)
Edit to add I’m only fifteen minutes in but I really hope no kids walk in on this one 😂

Wow, was about to say how I've noticed all of those things too except for her old house being next door, and I was gonna say I think that's a bit of a stretch. But after rewinding the video you're absolutely right 😂I've seen it 5 or 6 times, between watching with it friends and watching it on my own specifically to uncover little details like that, and it's never once registered that she's even looking over at another house in that moment. Even during this video, watching them pick up on it on their first time 🤦‍♂Good catch!
Absolutely love movies that reward attentiveness & multiple viewings, and I feel like this is one that will have something new for you no matter how many times you've seen it. Another thing they picked up on straight away, that took me a couple of viewings, is the irony of Lee wanting to be an actor as a child, when much of the movie is about her powerlessness & lack of agency.
And of course, one of my favorites, the word association test at the beginning, the image to which Lee says "father". That one registered with me the first time I watched it, though I would never have imagined how much subtext is packed into that one fleeting moment!

He's made one of the most LEGITIMATELY horrific horror films of the past decade with this, but the film that put him on my radar is a haunting little gem from 2015 called 'The Blackcoat's Daughter,' which is 100% recommended! Literally every movie says “#1 Movie of the Year” and no one complains then. Every horror movie is “most terrifying film of the year” and they never are, and no one complains. The stories diverged, but there were a few similarities. I think this is how modern horror films should be shot. The characters were all strange and seemed a little off, making it extra creepy. Very well done film. May I recommend Oddity, it was actually my favorite horror film of 2024. Think you'll love it. It's streaming on Shudder right now.

I love this movie - but I can see why some might not - and it’s primarily down to the fact that having some knowledge as to how Perkins does his thing helps appreciate it more.
He’s the master of ambiguity and leaving things up in the air - it’s effectively his calling card at this point - personally I love it, but it’s an acquired taste.
Another thing he’s masterful at is dropping little hints here and there - and “Longlegs” has many - just going to go through a few:
1 - It takes about 5 minutes for the viewer to figure out that there’s something a little... odd, about Lee. She’s stilted, weirdly unemotional, awkward - quite frankly she comes across as someone on the spectrum. But there’s another little hint as to what the truth is... and it’s right there from the beginning.
Notice how Lee walks - slightly hunched, stiff long strides, head down, arms basically clamped to her sides - her arms basically don’t leave her side for the entire first 2/3 of the movie - why is that? It’s a doll allegory - she walks like a doll being played with. At the end of the movie, we know why.
Also - she’s much more animated after Ruth shoots the doll.
2 - Ruth isn’t handicapped, she’s obviously troubled, but she’s not handicapped - why is one of the defining traits of her character through the movie that she takes a long time to pick the phone up? The viewer is led to believe it’s a quirk... truth is she’s in the basement and it takes a while to get upstairs.
The only real time Ruth shows any true mirth during the film is when Lee tells her that she doesn’t pray and haven’t prayed in a long time - she cackles, but then seems oddly proud of Lee for coming to that realization - we know why in hindsight.
And about Ruth - and I’ll just say it: “Hail Alicia Witt” - the ending is horrific, in a tragic sense. It’s clear that her reasons for doing what she’s doing is no longer about keeping her daughter safe, or not entirely, that is. And she tells on herself when she says: “I’ll do it again, and again, and again - and that makes it right” (the notion of protecting Lee) - at some point Ruth stopped caring about the justifications and Lee became a giant permission slip for her to keep pleasing “Father”
Which brings us to the ending:
“Father” has a plan for Lee, Ruth, Longlegs - for everybody.
And Longlegs tells Lee exactly what her endgame is in the interrogation when he tells Lee that he’ll “let her get started now” - up until that point Lee has simply been a pawn, Satan has moved her around on the board a little, but nothing indicative of what her fate is - until Longlegs tells her the aforementioned. Lee’s life has been like one of those toy cars that you wind up by pulling it backwards and letting it go - to her “birthday party”
Lee’s fate was always to know the truth, about herself, about Longlegs, about her mother - and having to live with that knowledge and the visual of her mother’s body slumped on that couch - and that she’s the reason for it. It’s why the gun clicks when she tries to shoot the doll - the devil planned it that way - she’s meant to “savor” the moment - twist and burn, little girl, forever.
    “Hail Satan”

I don’t think Harker would have been able to shoot the Ruby doll regardless if she had tried first or saved the last two shots she should have had for the doll. It was no coincidence the gun wouldn’t fire. I would doubt her order of doing things would have altered anything. I don’t know this for certain, but i don’t believe in coincidence and going with the theme of the movie, i think its safe to say the gun not firing when she should have had two rounds left is no coincidence. Such an excellent movie. This was one of my favorite of the year. Y’all absolutely need to watch Oddity. Please put that in the rotation.

Lee not shooting the doll could mean something else to me. She may have run out of bullets but she still had other ways to destroy the doll. What if Lee chose to keep the doll intact so that the little girl wouldn't have to suffer the fact that her parents were dead? Maybe the trance that the doll's spell leaves the child in must be better than real life where his father brutally killed his mother and was killed afterwards.

Yeah, there were a couple times you said "I'm confused," but your confusion was appropriate at the time. Do you know why he says cuckoo? As brood parasites, cuckoos do not raise their own young, instead laying eggs in the nests of other birds, which raise the chick thinking it is one of their own. Very much like what he is doing and does with the dolls.
