Glad I'm not the only one picking up how strong that Port Cask influence is, even at 3%... just stuck out so much to me, and I loved the notes it added. Juicy! After trying a pour in a bar, and it filling my entire palate with it's buttery juicy goodness, I just knew I had to chase down a bottle. Since killed it, RIP :)
Thanks boys, excellent work as always. Liked this one, hoped I could get the next release just as easy. It was either sold out in a matter of few minutes or went straight to ballot.
Great review.. Just enjoying my first SB, the 10 year old, then received a sample of their Local Barley 9 year old and was blown away by how good it is. Thanks, Andrew N.
The local barley bottlings are probably easier to come by in the States than here in the UK where they don't even make the shelves. They are stunning for their age. I am lucky that I have a very nice retailer who puts a bottle to one side for me!
@dhsilv2 Which shows what a huge Springbank fan you are that you pay three times the price we pay but still love it as much. We pay double for Bourbon but the starting price is low to start with!
@dhsilv2 I am really into the lost distilleries and have tried a lot of Brora, Port Ellen, Glenugie, Rosebank etc. I would love to hear your take on these but I suspect they are not available in the States.
Agreed, the port influence really does make it's presence known for such a small component of the batch. It does drink hot initially & agree that a few drops of water on this works wonders. Cheers guys
Pretty sure I ordered one from that place too. Then got the email saying that they had made a mistake. Have had samples of a couple of these Local Barley's. They are very good but as you said hard to get and expensive. In this same type of idea have had Kilchoman 100% Islay barley 8th and 9th release and really enjoyed them. Not the same flavor profile but really like the idea of a 100% dirt to glass in house bottle.
@dhsilv2 Definitely not same thing as the SB. The ones I had were the more recent one's that were fiannaly getting made from 9-10 year old casks. The earlier ones were very young casks and others have also said they did not like them. Have noticed that these older Kilchoman bottles with very young Whisky in them are on shelves all over the place. Really have to check out Kilchoman bottles carefully to get the recent ones that are older casks.
A couple of months ago I could've sworn I saw it for $160 before tax. It's hard though to pay way over $100 for a 10 year CS Scotch. I know it is craft Springbank but man oh man over $150 for a 10 year old. Kind of hard to rationalize.
@dhsilv2 You both may have convinced me and may be onto something. I checked with the store that last had them in early November. All gone. Not like last years Springbank 9 year Local Barley. Those languished forever. These 10 years must be special. Store clerk said they're ordering more but can't give any eta. Oh well. I shall have to change my mode of thinking when it comes to these Springbanks.
I truly love Springbank whisky. I don’t honestly know if it’s as good as I say or the nostalgia of my ancestors coming from the Kintyre Peninsula. Either way it’s my affliction...great review as always!!!!
Great discussion and review, fellas. I'm really really loving every glass of this I pour. And I agree, it doesn't drink like a 10 year old. I've got 100ml of the previous 10 set back and will look forward to comparing sometime.
your talking about Ace's and that was some B.S. what they pulled on that. I got some but pretty unimpressed and kind of plain and young tasting to me and way over priced for what's in the bottle. 2019 batch 19 CS 12 year destroys the Local Barley and it was only $100 and I bought a half case of it before the price went to $120 in U.S. The new 17 madeira is way over priced at $275. Springbank products have gotten out of control with the prices here in the U.S. New Kilkerran 16 here is way over priced as well. Springbank and Kilkerran have become cash grabs here
@dhsilv2 it just landed in U.S less than 2 weeks ago and i jumped on it quick. the 17 year madeira cask is here also but I'm passing on $275. new Hazelburn 13 oloroso is around $150. Kilkerran 16 $150. they are all here now and pricey
Springbank is always Dustin’s bottle! Thank to you guys I finally got Springbank 21 for around 400$ and what the fantastic scotch. The darkest scotch I’ve ever seen. Would you pick this or 18 year old for the same price?
Nice! Glad you got the 21... I’ve one had one bottle of the 18 and it was some time ago. I would have to revisit but the fact i never bought a second probably give me an idea of my preference. And yes, it’s always Dustin who brings the Springbank. Choose your whisky friends wisely. 😉
Another great review with great notes. Cheers guys.
Thanks Al!
Great review! I agree that they should be showcasing the barley in these LB. Then why is the 2021 release full sherry??
Verity is always nice, makes you appreciate the perfect bottling.
It's a good question, and I suppose we'll just have to find one and test it out.
Friend gave me a generous sample, this is phenomenal!
All the LB's are impressive. This was a close second to the 16.

same, the port was so obvious that I questioned the 3% stated.

The 9 year may be the lesser of all the LB bottling I’ve tried. It’s a high bar.

@dhsilv2 Good point. I managed to pick the new 17 year old Madeira up for less than £80. Suspect it will be nearer $200 over there.
Relationships with liquor stores and retailers are absolutely crucial at this point in time.

This whole time I thought I was good with percentages. 3% doesn't mean what I thought it meant.

This and Lagavulin 12 are north of $150 before tax... hard to swallow, i agree.

Great review guys! So sad that the one order fell through 😥
Tell me about it
Sounds delicious guys. Springbank is masterclass whisky and the prices reflect that. Thanks!!
Not cheap, that’s for sure.
I truly love Springbank whisky. I don’t honestly know if it’s as good as I say or the nostalgia of my ancestors coming from the Kintyre Peninsula. Either way it’s my affliction...great review as always!!!!
it's pretty good... dare I say epic for a 10 year.

A comparison is a great idea. I need to check Dustin's cabinet. ;)
My bottle needed a few weeks to open up, but since then it has been very enjoyable and one of those whiskies that I crave.
Addictive whisky.
Great review as usual 👍 ... I recently got a sample of the 11 yr old. Looking forward to try that soon!
The 11 was my second favorite just behind the 16. Hope you enjoy it!
This is an awesome bottle. Glad I could find one for a decent price
We thought $80 was going to be our price... it did not go as planned. 🤣
I have the 2009 10yr but would love to get my hands on this one. Appreciate the review, cheers!
Similar but some nuanced differences, it’s worth your time.
Found this one for $150. Makes we wonder if they are blending 10 year with 15 and 18 year barrels. Can’t believe this is only 10 year whiskey
Who knows but it does drink older, I agree with that.

@dhsilv2 batch 19 that is 57.1 ABV. the latest batch is the 56.1 and selling out fast

@dhsilv2 the new Hibiki finished in sakura casks is what I want to try but who knows what it will cost or when we will see it.
Springbank is always Dustin’s bottle!
