Know every word of this, grew up listening to the 'rebel' songs, Mom and Dad both from Ireland, I'm 1st generation born in UK.. My Dad was born in 1906 in Dublin and was only 10 when the Easter uprising took place. Ireland was under British rule and the Irish wanted their Independence, major battle at the GPO building in Dublin, Irish men fought and died, many were then executed after a brief 'trial'.. Independence came in the early 1920's but Britain still retains 6 counties which make up Northern Ireland, the history of Ireland is fascinating, often brutal but well worth reading about.
Listened to the Wolfe Tones and The Dubliners The Chieftains even the Clancy Brothers. Colm has just the right voice for this, and the penny whistle, fiddle and drums compliment his voice.. I still have vinyl copies, but now we are frowned upon for singing these songs in pubs or clubs.. They form part of history but are not PC.. never really were but more so since the Peace Agreement. Love from the UK as always.. Hopefully one day you will get to visit Ireland.. Johnny Cash wrote about the Forty Shades of Green, he could see flying over it.. so it's none too shabby.

Great reaction, Josh! Thanks! One of the things I love best about Colm's videos is all of the different instruments he plays WELL!

I'd be up for more Colm reactions. If you want to see more of his bass voice check out his covers of Song of Durin, Davy Jones or My Mother Told Me (especially the metal version). Or if you want a good mix of everything check out his original song "Now, Colly", a folk rock banger.

This song is about the Easter rising in 1916. A group of Irish men organised a rebellion against British domination and abuse of their fellow Irishmen and women . They knew that all they could hope for was to initiate a start to Irish independence but were prepared to die to put an end to British rule in their country. This song refers to the battalion of British soldiers, driving by with machine guns and artillery and the small group of rebels who attacked them at dawn in the mist of early morning.”The foggy Dew”
They all died and this song laments their passing and praises their bravery. Young men cut off in their prime fighting to free their country from oppression.

I like his voice but, I grew up with the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem singing this song. Many many others have sung it as well. I think for the first time though he was not the best choice. There is so much depth and history in The Songs of Irish rebellion(s).

This song was written about the 1916 Easter Rising, originally by a priest who witnessed the events unfolding before him. I'm personally partial to the Chieftains version of the song, with Sinéad O'Connor as the vocalist.

If I sing The Foggy Dew in my head, it is with Sinead's voice.

Thank you for reacting to this! I just LOVE Celtic music, and I have quite the collection. Now I have another artist to check out! It took me a minute to realize I’ve heard this on one of my Chieftains CD’s. If you want to explore some great Celtic music, I suggest you dive into the Chieftains. They’re an amazingly talented group of musicians. For a solo artist with a beautiful voice I suggest Lorena McKennit ( not sure if I spelled it correctly). Her music has an ethereal quality, but it can also be quite powerful.

Loved your reaction but please listen to the version that made it a huge hit The Chieftains with Sieand O'connor is truly amazing the song was written by a priest as the Irish war of Independence was raging it was song by a few other's but the version I'm talking about set the stage for how it be forever be song it won't disappointed im Irish this song is treated with so much respect and as for war song or rebel songs Irish traditional song will not disapoint you.

Just...welcome to the rabbit hole. Colm (pronounced Column) McGuinness is so multitalented, and his range is INSANE! So is the number of instruments he plays. God of War. Or Gimmi Gimmi (Abba cover). Or, Johnny I hardly Knew Ya. Or... well, those and Zombie are my favorites, anyway. Just...do yourself a favor. GO!

I think we all wanted to be pirates. I still do sometimes. I'd like to be somewhere between old-time pirates and current though. Like, I want to go on adventures on a basass old ship, but also want air conditioning and deodorant.

Luke Kelly would be a better version.

I think this is by far one of (if not) the worst version I ever heared. It just feels hollow for me, maybe its the different instrumentals and the lyrics just feel a bit off and so extremly slow/streched
