I'm so glad you two finally listened to this absolutely wonderful, iconic band. Although Wolf Totem is probably their most popular production, I favor Yuve Yuve Yu, which has more of a lyrical folk song feel but is still musically brilliant. All (or most of) these guys are classically trained professional musicians who've left their jobs with the National Conservatory or National Symphony to become ambassadors for Mongolian music in a modern style. Their name, "Hu," comes from the Mongolian word for human beings, which, I've heard, is a nod to their view of their place in the world and the value of all peoples.
👉The Hu: This band was founded in 2016. The syllable Hu in the band name is the Mongolian root for the word human. The band name roughly translates as 'the people'. The band's logo shows a snow leopard. The band chose this animal because of its mythical significance. Among other things, it is said to be a symbolic animal for ancient Mongolian tribes. The four members of the band, Gala (Singer), Jaya (Singer), Enkush (Mongolian horse head violin, Undertone singing) and Temka (Mongolian Gitarre), all have degrees in music from the Mongolian State Conservatory. Yes, it's brilliant. And even their version with Danny from From Darkness to New holds up as one of my favourite of their collaborations with Northern Americans. Although L.P. and Lzzy Hale didn't overwhelm their music with too much West watering down their East.
With Yuve Yuve Yu you get to see the true beauty of Mongolia. Turn on the captions! I listen to the Hu when I'm chopping vegetables. The dancing moves are similar to traditional Mongolian folk dancing. And yes, you must hear them with Lzzy Hale. Extraordinary.❤❤

This is a song they adapted from their song "Black Thunder" after being approached by the makers of the Star Wars video game, The Fallen Warrior. They changed the lyrics to a made up language to suit the Star Wars game. It is played in game during a boss battle. Absolutely epic!!!

I think my favourite is Yuve Yuve Yu. I can't even remember where I first heard it but it must have been at least 5 years ago. It remains one of my staple 'road trip' songs.
4:59 The 2 stringed instruments are called Morin Khuur (Horsehead Fiddle), the 3 stringed guitar looking instrument is a Tovshuur (Mongolian Lute). Interesting fact about the Morin Khuur: Traditionally the “strings” are made from the tail hairs of a horse (to bind instrument and player the hairs must come from the player’s own horse), the thicker or “Male” string has 150 hairs, the thinner or “Female” string has 130 hairs. A mark of a Master Morin Khuur player is that the can mimic the Neigh or Whinny of a horse on the instrument and it sounds like an actual horse.
Great reaction! Love the Pee Wee's references. This song mentions "The Great Khaan, Chinggis" who we more commonly refer to in the US as Ghengis Khan. Imagine being part of a culture that at one point ruled the largest empire in world history based on the strength of horse archer armies, from South Korea to SE Asia to to Bagdad, to modern Hungary and Poland. Such a unique and powerful fighting force that the civilization of China built the largest wall in history to keep them out (or trap them in without the ability to flee, depending on which tactical assumptions you make). This song hearkens back to that time, but translates it to modern horses through the motorcycles, and electrifies the traditional instruments to produce a uniquely modern traditional sound. History through hard rock!
I saw them live in New York last month when they opened for iron maiden. They were amazing. There were 2 drummers. Your rock/metal drum kit, and a second drummer who had what looked like 4 or 5 bass drums sitting horizontal like a snare drum would and he was using mallets to play the similar to what a marching band drummer would use. The second drummer really provided that tribal, battle march, punch you could feel across the arena.
I love this band…there actually a few more guys..please do look into there music, specially there collaborations with others….they were actually stuck here in Australia for a few months when covid was on, they had it in there TH-cam channel…loved watching them cook there native dishes….
I've seen these guys live four times, now - small, intimate spaces each time. That throat singing blasts through concrete floors and vibrates your bones. It's an overwhelming sensation and so, so, so cool. I've taken my 70+ parents to see them, and flown 1000s of kms to see them. I'm seconding (thirding, fourthing, whatever) the recommendation for Yuve Yuve and also Triangle. Your comments on how they take you somewhere almost alien...well, that's why they were asked to create the Mandalorian music for the Star Wars game Jedi: Fallen Order.
There's something really primal about the Hu's music. Makes me think of ancient trance music. I tend to play them when I've got something difficult to do. Channelling their fighting spirit.

I got to see them live in Santa Ana, which is close to the desert! 😂 That throat singing/overtone singing doesn't just get in your bones, it gets in your very SOUL. So much fun. I don't know any live recordings to recommend you, but my favorite MV of theirs is the one for Yuve Yuve Yu. Also if you like this, you should check out Heilung. 11:39 Interesting facts about these lyrics: 10, 100, 1000, and 10,000 were the “unit” sizes of the Mongolian Horde. The line “will hand you the Wrath of Heaven” is a awesome reference to a (unproven) story of Chinggis Khaan (Ghengis Khaan to us Westerners), supposedly after conquering a city, the “King” or “Ruler” asked Chinggis Khaan why he had done it, (supposedly) Chinggis Khaan answered “I am the Wrath of Heaven, if your sins were not so great God would not have sent me to destroy you.”
These beautiful & incredible Mongolians are partially why the Great Wall was built. Amazing, deep & raw. Their music is part of why they are who they still are. They do have a few others that you will hopefully enjoy. Simply good stuff.

I saw them open for Iron Maiden in Montreal and they killed it (in the best way)! I was worried it would sound "flat" in a big venue on a huge stage (Iron Maiden does not do small) but they were awesome!!

Something interesting about the Hu. IF i remember this correctly from when i looked into things... Part of Mongolian 'teaching' from the time you are a child to you are an adult, you are 'required' to learn how to play 1 instrument. I'm so glad you two finally listened to this absolutely wonderful, iconic band. Although Wolf Totem is probably their most popular production, I favor Yuve Yuve Yu, which has more of a lyrical folk song feel but is still musically brilliant. All (or most of) these guys are classically trained professional musicians who've left their jobs with the National Conservatory or National Symphony to become ambassadors for Mongolian music in a modern style. Their name, "Hu," comes from the Mongolian word for human beings, which, I've heard, is a nod to their view of their place in the world and the value of all peoples.

Yes, it's brilliant. And even their version with Danny from From Darkness to New holds up as one of my favourite of their collaborations with Northern Americans. Although L.P. and Lzzy Hale didn't overwhelm their music with too much West watering down their East.
With Yuve Yuve Yu you get to see the true beauty of Mongolia. Turn on the captions! I listen to the Hu when I'm chopping vegetables. The dancing moves are similar to traditional Mongolian folk dancing.

I think my favourite is Yuve Yuve Yu. I can't even remember where I first heard it but it must have been at least 5 years ago. It remains one of my staple 'road trip' songs.

Interesting fact about the Morin Khuur: Traditionally the “strings” are made from the tail hairs of a horse (to bind instrument and player the hairs must come from the player’s own horse), the thicker or “Male” string has 150 hairs, the thinner or “Female” string has 130 hairs. A mark of a Master Morin Khuur player is that the can mimic the Neigh or Whinny of a horse on the instrument and it sounds like an actual horse.

Imagine being part of a culture that at one point ruled the largest empire in world history based on the strength of horse archer armies, from South Korea to SE Asia to to Bagdad, to modern Hungary and Poland. Such a unique and powerful fighting force that the civilization of China built the largest wall in history to keep them out (or trap them in without the ability to flee, depending on which tactical assumptions you make).
This song hearkens back to that time, but translates it to modern horses through the motorcycles, and electrifies the traditional instruments to produce a uniquely modern traditional sound. History through hard rock!
This is crazy, I was just talking about this group and in particular this song.
I saw them live in New York last month when they opened for iron maiden. They were amazing. There were 2 drummers. Your rock/metal drum kit, and a second drummer who had what looked like 4 or 5 bass drums sitting horizontal like a snare drum would and he was using mallets to play the similar to what a marching band drummer would use. The second drummer really provided that tribal, battle march, punch you could feel across the arena.

I've seen these guys live four times, now - small, intimate spaces each time. That throat singing blasts through concrete floors and vibrates your bones. It's an overwhelming sensation and so, so, so cool. I've taken my 70+ parents to see them, and flown 1000s of kms to see them. I'm seconding (thirding, fourthing, whatever) the recommendation for Yuve Yuve and also Triangle. Your comments on how they take you somewhere almost alien...well, that's why they were asked to create the Mandalorian music for the Star Wars game Jedi: Fallen Order.
There's something really primal about the Hu's music. Makes me think of ancient trance music. I tend to play them when I've got something difficult to do. Channelling their fighting spirit.

I got to see them live in Santa Ana, which is close to the desert! 😂 That throat singing/overtone singing doesn't just get in your bones, it gets in your very SOUL. So much fun. I don't know any live recordings to recommend you, but my favorite MV of theirs is the one for Yuve Yuve Yu.

Great reaction - cant add much, if anything from the previous commentators. Only thing I would suggest is look at the Hu's collabs. Jacoby Shaddox doing this song, Lizzy Hale, song of Woman, LP and the Hu - Mother Nature. My latest favourite is The Hu doing Iron Maiden 'the Trooper' in Mongolian.....

IF i remember this correctly from when i looked into things... Part of Mongolian 'teaching' from the time you are a child to you are an adult, you are 'required' to learn how to play 1 instrument. Not sure if the Throat singing itself is required, but 1 musical instrument is a required learning.
