“Thus, what counts for you is not the truth that these words bear, but only the importance to be granted them according to the fame of the one from whom they are said to have come. You are incapable of seeing for yourselves but only feel what you think should be felt, and think according to the opinion of those you have placed on a pedestal; you are forever adding to things, tainting them, falsifying them. That is why you are powerless to see original spirit without reference to who or whatever it might be. Nincompoops, you are nothing but fakes and tricksters. Your case is hopeless.” - Old man Tcheng
"Not all spiritual paths lead to the Harmonious Oneness. Indeed, most are detours and distractions, nothing more."
    - Lao Tzu from the Hua Hu Ching
My biggest challenge on the path was waking up without a teacher or guide, and then trying to find a way to ground and understand my experience and just finding bullshit everywhere which actually caused even more unnecessary conditioning.
No one had a clue what they were talking about until I found my teacher who a lot more of a clue than anyone else and made my clue more clear.
I hope this synthesises things a bit for you.

I I completely agree with you that enlightenment is often misunderstood and that the ultimate goal is actually to realize God, happiness, or true consciousness. But what do you make of the work of neuroscientists who have looked at the brains of 'enlightened' people and found that the region responsible for the sense of 'I' is completely shut down?

The region responsible for “I” has always been measured and located by those who believe themselves to be separated and limited.
They believe that their consciousness (if they have ever even thought that far) is inside their head. Which means that if one was to track the region responsible for “I” it would probably be located inside the head of that’s what they believe themselves to be.
Or, they believe that they are simply a collection of thoughts and feelings.
The actual region responsible for the “I” doesn’t exist in the mind or brain because it is not inside the head neither can it even be located by the mind because it is truly the mind that exists inside “it”.
Therefore to track the region for “I” should have always been impossible and has only ever been trackable in the first place because they based the experiments on that one fundamental mistake, assuming that the sense of “I” they were measuring is actually the real “I” that they are.
In summary, Neuroscientists measure brains. Consciousness is not inside the brain and consciousness is the real “I”.

This is like a non force user trying to tell a force user that the force does not actually exist :)
