"Jolly Roger" is one the coolest sounding terms ever, especially in context of a skull and cross bones flag indicating no mercy.

I always just assumed that the “Jolly” part of the name “Jolly Roger” referred to the fact that the skeleton looks like it’s grinning/smiling/happy…jolly!

Catching up on my videos! I never really knew different pirates had their own flags! It's awesome that so many were recorded for posterity. Thanks Jolly Jay! 😁

Most if not all pirate flags we see are interpretations of written descriptions. As far as I know, there isn't a single pirate flag that made it through time. Cloth naturally disintegrates. We might look upon them with interest today. Though at that time, no one would even want to own a black flag at all, much less preserve it.. Pirates were considered a terror that should be forgotten about once dealt with, as to not inspire others to do similar acts.

Gonna be a cool video. Probably one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. Can’t wait!

Great video Jay very informative thank you Sensei Jay the red skeleton flag was my favorite. Because it reminds me the symbiote Spider-Man suit which was originally going to be a red spider, but problems with printing made them go with a white spider instead.

One of my favorite scenes from PotC was in the 3rd movie when they were all hoisting the colors. Weren’t there a few famous flags raised in the scene?

I was surprised not to see the one flag you showed on the tour around St. Augustine's pirate museum, you know, the one believed by some to be the original Jolly Roger flag?
The old man/ skeleton/ reaper of course all symbolize death itself, the master of time (⏳), Chronos; the dagger: sudden death. All X-forms, like the runic G mean 'gift' (two hands gifting X two hands receiving), so X+💀= deathbringer -- which is why ☠ is put on poisons.
Simple pictograms understood by most people (at the time) for the multilingual Caribbean.

    Dear Jay,
Hoisting a red flag would seem counter productive. If you announce to your target that you do not intend to spare them, they will have nothing to lose fighting to the death. As a pirate, you would want to persuade your victim to surrender to take their ship as intact as possible to use it for yourself, as well as minimising damage to your own vessel.
    Frank.

Most ships surrendered either way and begged for mercy

    Dear Jay,
Interesting. I would have thought the most appropriate place for a red flag would be hanging from the battlements of a citadel warning a besieging army that they would have to fight for every room in every house.
I'd expect any captain willing to surrender to a pirate who already announced his intentions would be the first to die at the hands of his own crew.
    Frank.
