    For those curious about the differences between the two editions. This book features all the stories more or less considered part of the Cthulhu mythos, so some stories that only make brief mentions to things like the Necronomicon don't make the cut (like The Case of Charles Dexter Ward). This also features stories that were written in collaboration with other writers like The Curse of Yig. You will only find the stories that Lovecraft wrote solo in the complete fiction, so this book has 6 stories that you won't find in the other volume. Hopefully that info is useful to someone.

      Hey! I was wondering if any of them contained the poems? Also, if you happened to know about the chartwell classics edition of his complete fiction, does that one come with the poems? As you can tell, I am mostly interested in finding an edition that contains the poems, but also, I would love it if it contained the cthulhu mythos as well. Any recommendations?

      I completely agree. I've been completely torn between buying this for the aesthetic of it and buying the Complete fiction for the content.
      The Cthulhu Mythos' cover matches the feel of Lovecraft's writing and I find that absolutely stunning while The Complete Fiction's cover looks more futuristic or galactic which really doesn't vibe well with Lovecraft's eldritch writings.
      Content wise, I'd definitely love to pay for a book which already has every story I'm looking for.

    • @glitchedoom
      @glitchedoom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@crowe2670 I think I'm going to get both. It sounds stupid having a book full of stories that already exist in the complete fiction, but having just the Cthulu Mythos all together is nice if those are the only stories I feel like diving into one day.

      They need to update it again with a better cover. And pick someone new for the introduction and notes. Not Joshi, an apologist for Lovecrafts racism.

  • @Carlo-V.
    @Carlo-V. 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This edition is a pleasure in terms of both looks and contents. It is also edited by S. T. Joshi who is the leading authority on HPL and a towering figure in weird/horror fiction scholarship. Surprisingly enough, Joshi did not include the amazing novella "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" in which there are several Mythos hints and "The Diary ofAlonzo Typer" a sort of haunted house-Cthulhu Mythos combined story (Joshi actually hates it, I find it very nice). So technically, it is not "complete", but a remarkable tome nonetheless. And yes, the poster is not a big deal (not even sure where I put mine) ; ) Thanks for the great review Denis!

  • @ex-voto
    @ex-voto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is a great book, not only physically & artfully, but the selection of stories is fantastic. Every one is a great tale & the cream of Lovecraft's work.
    I also have "The Complete Fiction" the larger one with everything ~ however that book is a bit disappointing because, frankly, not all Lovecraft's work was that good. So you will read through a bunch of rather lacklustre stories & get a bit bored. But with the Mythos Tales you will be hungry for more each one you complete.
    The Mythos Tales is "the best of" Lovecraft, I'd recommend this book & then stop. To be honest you will only find things you don't like when you dig deeper & we all know what his egregious character flaw was.

    Hi.
    Looking for a complete edition, it does not need to be every word written, but at least the "best of" or perhaps like the B&N complete version.
    One thing I am having problems with is the print size and eligibility, eyesight not been what it used to be, so I wonder if you think is the one in your video is the best fit or another?
    I did see a Necronomicon (black gold print cover) but some print is very small, though it does have some nice sketches here and there.
    Thanks

    • @FoolishFishBooks
      @FoolishFishBooks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm afraid I've not seen the print on the Necronomicon to compare sizes... I'd suggest getting a Kindle if your eyesight is getting worse. The HP Lovecraft books are now in the public domain so you can pick the Kindle editions up for 50p.

Its just that both independently got inspired by a short story by Ambrose Bierce.
