We have 'stars' in Holland bitching over blue M&M's but somehow they never seem to make it across the Atlantic. I think Garrix' humbleness or Tiësto's or any other Dutch DJ, has something to do with the moral code in the Netherlands. We have a saying that says something like: 'Act normal, that's crazy enough'. Even the King or the Prime minister seem ordinary, approachable dudes.
Culture plays a big roll in how someone will turn out to be, that's fact. You can clearly see a big difference in the people in Europe who have a European background or are from immigrants decent. Some try to really adapt to the culture they live in, while others force theirs upon others.

It's everyone from Amsterdam. I swear down. I asked for directions from this lady there and she mentions that she doesn't speak English very well. She was so polite and gave me better directions than I could be able to give another person in my own language. Love the place and it's people. So humble and very nice.
Side note. They are crazy on bikes. Not at all surprised that bikes are his favourite way to travel. They are everywhere there ^.^

The story about sorting out M&M's is actually something Van Halen put into a whole staging requirements list. The whole list was made to make sure the stage could support the weight of their gear and meet their safety requirements. The way to check if someone read the whole document and followed through on it was to put one line in there saying they wanted M&M's with one colour sorted out of it. If they saw the colour of M&M's in the bowl anyway, they knew someone at the venue didn't read the whole safety document and they couldn't do the show because they wouldn't be sure all was safe. Or at least, that's what I read in, I think the book 'Think Like a Freak' by Dubner and Levitt.

For work I had regular contact via email with him personally, he really was interested in the workings, was genuinely nice and always had a personal note as well.

I would just say that it makes him human. He's famous, but wants to be a normal person like everyone. 'Doe normaal', meaning 'act normal', quite defines the Dutch culture as a whole. Dutch people don't like to brag with what they have, they don't want to stand out too much.

The part where he called asking for only green M&Ms not cool because it would mean one person sorting them out really sticks out to me as a representation of who he is. The idea that there'd need to be someone behind the scenes that'd have to work to make it happen isn't a thought that would even cross most people's minds. This might not be the very best episode of Hot Ones, but I honestly think that this might have been the best interview, in-terms of quality of responses. I knew next to nothing about Martin Garrix before this interview outside of his music, but this interview just made me a fan. What a refreshing take on the modern celebrity personality.

Finally watched it and it's... just so fantastic what a guy Martijn is. Started listing to his music way back in 2014 and even though I've not always liked it, he's such a great, humble, down to earth guy despite all that fame. It's worth following him just for the positive vibe he delivers not only with his music. Easily a role model. Looking forward to see him at Opener 2021 for the first time.
