Closest one for me is about 45 minutes away. Well closest good one there's two that are closer but are sketchy at best.
Yeah, a lot of the smaller game stores did not survive wotc'd reduced store support (in lieu of increased arena investment instead) and the C pandemic. Lucky for wotc, they can deflect/hide most of the blame to the pandemic.

Prereleases are super fun… if the audience is right.
Prereleases are awesome. But wotc, what we want is an effective arena economy, a real competitive scene, and a second printing of sets like TSR.
I would love to but in my area the MTG scene is being held hostage by a few unsavory stores. These stores either foster unfriendly atmospheres, charge almost double the MSRP on new magic products and/or offer very little in terms of prizes for any sort of event that is held. It's painful to be a part of the scene when you know your hosts are making money hand over fist and offering very little to their customer and player base.
Example; new Kamigawa set booster, reasonably priced every where for about $105-115 give or take, or you can go to one my LGS's who meet allocation discounts and still charge about $150 for it. That's insane, and the real fun part is you're not even guaranteed a buy-a-box promo. The levels of greed are through the roof.

My Lgs still isn't holding in store events. They talked about bringing it back in the fall but then cases spiked and new variants happened. I'm begging to think that they aren't going to resort back to holding any events. Especially since they ditched the tables for more space to sell more merchandise.
Show them that mtg events are profitable!
Weaker variants that is closing the pandemic as its getting weaker and the death rate is less than .6% less than 1% people die now world wide. CDC and Media fearmonger and people's lives are being hurt by this. I suggest you talk to your LGS to reconsider and maybe continue to use mask and hand cleaners.
I'm tempted to go for Kamigawa. Been almost two decades!

Sadly: Omicron variant + my store switched to Flesh & Blood because of the better support they apparently give.
I miss live play. But the tournament scene and incentive to play is gone. Pair that with LGS's having to charge more so that they can make money on the new overpriced product and an inability to buy directly, and you have a game that's falling apart.
I play commander a lot and have cards collected since the late 90s - and WotC is continuing to fail the players. I don't want Arena. I want more incentive to live play and well designed products that are available. *Cough cough time spiral remastered cough cough*

I'm excited to go back! Prereleases are my favorite way to get some cool cards and play with others
I basically stopped playing all Magic:tG once in-store events ended such as prereleases stopped. If/when they come back to my local game store (LGS), I'll definitely to come out to sling some cardboard again.
Once we can play again in person I'm going to my LGS and finally learning to play magic. I've been waiting patiently for soooooooo long;[

Love prereleases. With omicron were gonna have another year of magic without the gathering.
Find me this in Northern California? I remember even going to my local card shops when I was young and you would be lucky if 5 people showed up.

Pre-releases are definitely one of the premier ways to enjoy MTG, always recommend them

I would but the WPN stores around me are only “mask encouraged” and there’s no way I’m going to an small store filled with unmasked magic players
Not like the mask does anything anyways. If you're in a small area, that mask protects you by 0%.

As much as I would like to do in store omicron is spreading like wildfire.
Offer something worth wild and I would love to go! Not going to go to a prerelease for a BS set like double feature!! As well, when that same BS set is ONLY available at premium shops!!
Cut back your greed and more people will gladly attend these events!
I leave the game for 9 years and come back to what ever this is... Where is standard... Why is the push for modern and commander... What happened to the blocks... I feel like someone got a baseball bat to the head by the good idea fairy... Let's get some more standard back into this game. You have given me no reason to buy packs and need to go to online stores to buy older cards.. can some one explain to me the reason for this.
I was just watching the the professor, and I actually buy booster pack, I ask switch to paper booster pack wrappings, and use biodegradable and eco-friendly. I have been playing magic ever since I was 8. Needless to say I wasn't thinking about the cost. But now I pay more attention to the cost of things and the cost to our environment, wildlife and marine life. I've never been to a single MTG event. I want better product and if you switch over to biodegradable papper packs. If you do I will attend one of these pre release things and spend as much time effort and money as I reasonably can.

Can anyone explain to me what is Prerelease from A to Z. Everything in detail.
If I'm not mistake, you pay fee to play // participate prerelease game and you buy at least 1 prerelease kit?
Then you play with other people until only got 1 winner?
But since 1 prerelease kit doesn't have enough land, LGS give? or sell? land card?
Please explain to me A to Z.

I haven't played in person since I took top at a pre release and found they moved all of the prize support over to their commander night. They need clear guidelines on what things are to be used for.

First Pre-release I went to i was matched up with people who were treating it as I it was a Grand Prix. Left feeling discouraged. Probably will just stick with Arena.
That's either a poorly run store who doesn't enforce REL casual, or a store with a bad judge. Actually, I don't know if LGS had to have an official judge anymore, so you might not actually had a good qualified judge per say.

@@naejin The store can't enforce that players act casually, only that the rules are followed in an appropriate way.
If you happen to run into a bunch of cutthroat wannabe PTQ-grinders who have never smiled in their life and bring an incredibly tense and unwelcoming atmosphere to the table, the judge can't help you to make the experience more fun.
I keep hearing y’all can’t go to your local store and play magic because of Covid? Well that sucks but y’all need to quit being worried and play the game y’all love with others. Covid is never going away. Go out and have fun, and enjoy “The Gathering” part of magic.
Why you should add mtg arena to chromebooks
pre release never happened at my card shop and if they it’s the fucking most sweaty mtg players my favorite time at my card shop I just bought pre release kit just too get one for fun some one ask if I’m going play is said no and got all butt hurt.

No prerelase is not fun. Every1 around u wants 2 win and they will do everything to do it. I lost bcs some1 casted sorc as a instant, Scamed on abilities, “accidentally” gived himself some life, if u know with who u r playing its good, but thiz shid is no fun when some1 is cheating.

This video is actually extremely irresponsible right now with omicron about. The prerelease is on my birthday. As much as I want to go I'm not going to.
You SHOULD avoid prereleases during a COVID surge. This is dogshit marketing from such a woke company.
A lot of complaints in the thread I see. How about this stop just whining and let your wallets decide? That let's them know they need to change more than some TH-cam comments....In my area the scene is still strong but if it ever got as bad some of you say I would do what's needed. More action guys less whining.
