I'd definitely have to change the fireplace somehow I think. Don't think I could live with those pink tones. If you white washed it, would the pink still peep through a bit? Am so loving seeing all the progess - you have a gem in Chris! Tommy is coming back next episode - YAY! You two together are a great team. Thanks for sharing Sarah. Cheers, DEB T (NZ)

I love the stone element! If you're not crazy about the pink tones of the the granite, do what you said and pick a colour of wall paint that tones down the pink. When you showed that the family will have a mudroom, I thought it would be nice to do the open closet at the entrance and have it just for guests to hang their things and to have extra hats and mitts and slippers by the door. Just a thought : ))

We had the exact same fire place in our cottage in Honey Harbour, Georgian Bay. So many wonderful memories around that fireplace....I can't give you an objective answer...I adored it. Ours was surrounded with old copper fire utensils and hanging horse bells. I say bring in some red accents like old skis, tan and grey furry blankets, some black and white family pictures on a light grey wall colour with down lighting. Silver would be a better accent metal.

I don't love the granite but I'd try to work with it by adding an awesome mantel that would break up the granite. The mantel is in keeping with the chalet vibe and also a great landing spot for seasonal displays ie holiday stockings, big candle sticks, garland etc.

  • @MsSherrydarling
    @MsSherrydarling 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Since tearing out the stone would be expensive and time consuming, I would build a box around it and hang a new fascia (tile, better looking stone, etc.) because I agree - the pink isn't looking good... Since building a frame around the large stone will create boxy space on each side - I would then design some sort of cool open shelving for each side. On another note - I love what you're doing here! I'm loving your vision and can't wait to see how it turns out!

I have clad over all my fireplaces with traditional wood painted white. I don’t love painting stone or brick but what about using white cement to tone it down and make the stones less obvious. Leanne Ford from HGTV’s Rock the Block did a kitchen wall made from brown stones but used cement (I believe) to tone down the stones - it looked amazing.

What about staining the rock on the fire place? can this be done? Also, there is “fake” stone that actually looks really good that can be placed on top...which could be an option? Or Wood the top & lower sides. Or German Schmear technique.

I’m tempted to say ‘work with that bossy fireplace’ cause I’m interest to see what Sarah would do to make it less prominent. BUT if it were my place, I’d either paint it in a hot minute OR I would clad it in barn board/ship lap, something that could be painted thus preserving the pink granite for a time in the distant future when pink granite is what every one wants ! Lol

Work with the granite. Use the palest of gray tones to minimize it, both on the walls and ceiling. Then, use furnishings that have some rusty and gray tones in the pillows, leather, etc. that pull out some of the other colors in the granite besides the pink. But I'm sure you're going to end up painting it because I know from 100 years of watching you that if something bothers you at all, you won't be happy until you fix it:)

Ohhhhhhh YES! Barn doors for the front entry closet!
The barn board cladded mud room will be awesome!
That fireplace, clad the top of it, and work with the bottom. I personally don't like huge stone fireplaces. I don't like the pink at all. I like grey.

Personally I find the peninsula splits the kitchen and having to always walk around it, and the stools that will probably be there, to get to the fridge a pain. Could you not put a sink under the window instead and leave some open area? I would keep with and work with the pink granite fireplace as well. It would look great with the right paint colour and possibly even built-ins on either side? Looking fantastic!!

I think you should take the flat stock that was put up on the ceiling between the beams, and add it to the closet doors. Put it around the edge of the face (like it is on the ceiling) and then use the extra and make large 'x's in the center. It looks 'barn-like' without too much bulk. My two-cents from Vermont! STAIN THE GRANITE! It is possible with iron oxides (and other durable concrete stains) to stain stone and brick. There are TH-cams about it. Easiest tactic: wash everything in the stain (possibly under-staining the worst of the pinkies with green to cancel it out first) then tuck-point a thin layer of new grout so that the mortar joints don't give the game away (which I did to rescue a disgusting yellow brick fireplace). This will not be as durable as say staining concrete or brick and the color payoff will be much less since granite is less permeable than concrete, but it's worth a try. I would much rather look at a dark gray bossy fireplace than a pink one! Love your content - hope this helps!

Walking around the island to get to the refrigerator , is that really going to work?? Fire place, work around the granite. I know it’s pink!!! Pull the gray out. Other option for fire place would be to Schmeer the fireplace.

Karen Berry maybe use fridge drawers in the peninsula rather than an upright fridge

I would paint it. I love pink. I do not love pink granite. Once painted, or stained (is that even possible?), maybe a big rustic, thick, chunky wood mantel (but not orange knotty pine ;) ). IMO, one way or another, the pink/peachy tones have to go. I am sure you will come up with a fantastic solution.

A peninsula in the kitchen? Pretty, but impractical; you’d have to go out of the kitchen to get to the frig. Why not an island (albeit small) instead? You would also get more than two stools surrounding it.
You’re brilliant, Sarah, so I’m just curious.

Sarah, I know what you should do with that ottoman...ship it on down to Junk Gypsy! They'd probably get a kick out of it.

Since it is a chalet I would keep the stone as is and play up the grays and ignore the pink.

What about a whitewash over the stone? I would do something dramatic and change the pink

What do you do with the items that you don’t keep? Like the ottoman, do you give them to charity, sell them or junk them?

The fridge on the opposite side of the peninsula seems very inconvenient! Especially with stools on the end of the peninsula meaning you’ll have to be walking around your guests to get things out.
