You gain supports by being deployed in the same chapter, starting player phase next to each other, shoving, rescuing, and healing. Being deployed together gives a fair amount of support points so just using units will eventually get you enough support but you can speed up the process by your actions.

I'm not sure why extinguishing torches is a thing, it doesnt' benefit you at all as far as I know
