I am born in surulere and have lived in the mainland all my life. When I travelled back to Nigeria I also choose to live in the mainland. My 2 flats newly built apartment costs me 500k per year and it’s in a very quite estate off the street. All my friends that came back the same year moved to the highland. To cut the long story short. They’re all back in Europe to their 9/5 jobs and heavily in debts. During their stay I remembered helping them make their shoppings from the mainland. I run a leather shoes shop. The men’s shoes I will sell for 50k will cost you 100k. Most of my clients are in the highland. I am not doing bad with myself by making that decision to start from the bottom and I’m doing great and expanding. My take is if you’re not capable financially to live in the highland don’t try to follow the trend.

Leaving the estate is very easy as it is the last bus stop for Maruwa that is going to 7&8 bus stop. You can also use Bolt taxi. Rental in those areas are still very affordable
There is nothing like a "highland" in the entire Lagos state. Lagos topography is generally lowland. And the "Island" he talked about has some areas that are even below the sea level which explains the perenial flooding in that axis.

Mainland Ikeja GRA and Opebi area is my thing. I can't deal with the flooding in Lekki etc. Ikoyi is the best if I can afford Island. *I only just watched your video and I must commend what a well articulated presentation of modern day Lagos you did here boy. It's a true reflection of life and cost of living in Lagos Island compared to the mainland. Also, I agree security, serenity and higher standard of living is best available in Island. Kudos! ...good job. I lived in Mainland - Maryland in my teenage years and I fell in love with Mainland. Now, only concerned about the general security out there.
If you asking me, I wouldn't recommend Ikorodu because of known insecurity at that axis with a violent gang. Secondly, it's fairly remote and sub urban. It's within Lagos State, not Lagos proper.

If what you meant to say was that in America, central business districts are called downtowns, yes, most people know that. But when they say Island(s) in Nigeria, they are talking about Lagos Island/Ikoyi/Victoria Island/Banana Island/Lekki. Downtown will not really apply to any of those places except Lagos Island.

Very honest and discreet information. I have been to the island, apart from the "big men of Lagos" living there, the beautiful houses, there's nothing really attractive about the place. These are basic things you will abroad but they're considered as luxury on the island. It's really funny you know 😂😂
I traveled to Nigeria for the first time in December in order to meet my fiance's family. While there, I spent time on the mainland and the island. I definitely felt more anxious while on the mainland. The anxiety I felt was mainly brought on by traffic. It felt incredibly chaotic.

Hi Araceli. This is AMAZING! I didn't stay in hotels. I just stayed in Airbnb's. I can definitely recommend a great one that is safe. I think you would love Nigeria. I do think you need to have at least one contact there to guide and show you around though. things can get frustrating fast if you don't understand how things work,
As usual another informative video. I live on the mainland in a nice estate. I don’t go to the island as much because of traffic mainly. Over time I will gradually start seeing more on the island since the bridge is open now. Hopefully that will tame traffic more 😊
So in summary, the island is where everybody wants to at. How are the suburbs of Lagos? I like how the center of Lagos has tall skyscrapers while the outskirts have basic architecture. It's a interesting transition of a megacity.

So I think you need to redo the part about mainland and the island concept of Lagos; which is the island is an area of Lagos largely surrounded by water hence Lagos Island and its surroundings while the mainland is a part of Lagos that has more of landmass and then you mention the areas. Also there are so many areas on the mainland that are not prone to noise like Opebi, Ikeja GRA, parts of illupeju, certain parts of Surulere etc. Well done sha!!!

The term island is singularly used to refer to several islands and peninsulas on the Lagos Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean coasts. They are Lagos Island, Victoria island, Ikoyi, Tarkwa Bay, Lekki peninsula.bthese are all islands in their own right but interconnected by a network of roads and bridges. The islands were basically developed by the British during the colonial period as it Lagos was a British colony that was established in 1860 independently of the protectorates of Northern and southern Nigeria. The Lagos colony was eventually merged with the two Nigeria’s during the 1914 amalgamation that turned Nigeria into a single British colonial entity. Lagos mainland wasn’t part of the colony of Lagos but belonged to the protectorate of southern Nigeria. As a result it was less developed than the islands and remains so to this day. The majority of lagosians live on the mainland with the more affluent living in Victoria island and Lekki . Apapa is also an island in its own right but because it hosts Nigeria’s seaport and many heavy industries and is not heavily residential it often doesn’t get mentioned
This is not entirely true. Ikoyi and partly Apapa are the only places developed by the British. Victoria Island and many parts of Lagos Island were developed in the 1970ies by the then Nigerian military governments, and in the early 1980ies by the civilian government of the second republic. Before the return of civilian rule in 1979, there was no road to get to Ajah. If you wanted to go to Ajah, which was just a little village in the 70ies, you have to go by boat. There was just one landrover (the type they used to use an iron rod to start from the front) in the whole of Ajah used for logging. The Lekki Epe road was built during the time of Jakande. So, nothing to do with the British. Most of all the bridges on Lagos Island and part of "Lagos Mainland" (around Iganmu, Surulere) were also built during this period of the oil boom. British did nada! Lekki and the adjoining portion of Victoria Island used to be part of Marokko which was demolished during the time of Raji Rasaki, the military governor during Babangida military regime. Hence, these areas were built in the late 1990ies and 2000ies. I left Nigeria in 1995, and at that time, Marokko was still not rebuilt. By the way, the Colony of Lagos is not just Lagos Island as you stated. The Boundary between Lagos Colony and the Protectorate of Western Nigeria was around Yaba and Mushin. Hence, Yaba, Surulere, Iddo, Oyingbo, Apapa were part of the Colony of Lagos and NEVER a part of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, not even Western Nigeria. Apapa was a very afluent neighbourhood. It is just now that commercial activities have dominated the area. A great part of Apapa was really a very calm and quiet neighbourhood with lots of expats living there. Apapa is now a shadow of what it used to be. It's just like Nigeria, totally ran aground!

I am a mainland bread my parents have their home their and job took me to island VI first and lekki phase 1 and been living on the island till now that I now own my property in Ajah. Basic island challenges are bad running water if not treated and flood issues in some areas when their is heavy down pore of rain. Aside those challenges business wise, security and amenities island is way better.

Just being a "foreigner" doesn't mean you can afford to live on Lagos Island...Lol. They need to remain connected to the job that affords them the ability to live there.

You tried tho to give a balance view tho you over generalized in several areas. 1. On accomodation, Ikeja GRA, Opebi, Adeniyi Jones, Omole are very pricey and match several places on the Island save Banana Island. Infrastructure in Ikeja is ok. 2. On Business, for an entrepreneur bootstapping, it makes more sense starting on the mainland and later expand or move to the Island if not. 3. Ilupeju has the largest concentration of Indian expats in Nigeria because manufacturing jobs are on the mainland.

Effective sewage systems are a basic hallmark of a functioning city, town, or village. During the rainy season especially, sewerage gets washed into the lagoon and becomes even more contaminated. Why haven't the government fixed this yet. Millions living in that city and drinkable tap water is a luxury?

They are also planning to build a 4th bridge that will link the mainland to the Island. The three existing presently are overwhelmed. Also, the Govt is planning to tap into water transportation. Since water cut across the city. - Citizens: The majority of citizens don't obey traffic rules - The nonequilibrium of development: Some part of the state has a lot of opportunities while some have very little. Govt focus on areas where they get more taxes, that's what makes some areas not to develop. What do you expect from humans? They move to where opportunities are. In summary, leadership failure.
Lagos Mainland homes are built on solid rocks and Lagos island homes are mostly built on sand. You did not point that out. Did you see how the high-rise collapsed in Ikoyi.🍎
Lekki which is an area in Lagos island, are 99% dominanted by Nigerians, that also includes VI, Ikoyi . So the part which you said they are dominanted by expats are not that much.

So in summary, the island is where everybody wants to at. How are the suburbs of Lagos? I like how the center of Lagos has tall skyscrapers while the outskirts have basic architecture. It's a interesting transition of a megacity.

So I think you need to redo the part about mainland and the island concept of Lagos; which is the island is an area of Lagos largely surrounded by water hence Lagos Island and its surroundings while the mainland is a part of Lagos that has more of landmass and then you mention the areas. Also there are so many areas on the mainland that are not prone to noise like Opebi, Ikeja GRA, parts of illupeju, certain parts of Surulere etc. Well done sha!!!

The term island is singularly used to refer to several islands and peninsulas on the Lagos Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean coasts. They are Lagos Island, Victoria island, Ikoyi, Tarkwa Bay, Lekki peninsula.bthese are all islands in their own right but interconnected by a network of roads and bridges. The islands were basically developed by the British during the colonial period as it Lagos was a British colony that was established in 1860 independently of the protectorates of Northern and southern Nigeria. The Lagos colony was eventually merged with the two Nigeria’s during the 1914 amalgamation that turned Nigeria into a single British colonial entity. Lagos mainland wasn’t part of the colony of Lagos but belonged to the protectorate of southern Nigeria. As a result it was less developed than the islands and remains so to this day. The majority of lagosians live on the mainland with the more affluent living in Victoria island and Lekki . Apapa is also an island in its own right but because it hosts Nigeria’s seaport and many heavy industries and is not heavily residential it often doesn’t get mentioned

This is not entirely true. Ikoyi and partly Apapa are the only places developed by the British. Victoria Island and many parts of Lagos Island were developed in the 1970ies by the then Nigerian military governments, and in the early 1980ies by the civilian government of the second republic. Before the return of civilian rule in 1979, there was no road to get to Ajah. If you wanted to go to Ajah, which was just a little village in the 70ies, you have to go by boat. There was just one landrover (the type they used to use an iron rod to start from the front) in the whole of Ajah used for logging. The Lekki Epe road was built during the time of Jakande. So, nothing to do with the British. Most of all the bridges on Lagos Island and part of "Lagos Mainland" (around Iganmu, Surulere) were also built during this period of the oil boom. British did nada! Lekki and the adjoining portion of Victoria Island used to be part of Marokko which was demolished during the time of Raji Rasaki, the military governor during Babangida military regime. Hence, these areas were built in the late 1990ies and 2000ies. I left Nigeria in 1995, and at that time, Marokko was still not rebuilt.
By the way, the Colony of Lagos is not just Lagos Island as you stated. The Boundary between Lagos Colony and the Protectorate of Western Nigeria was around Yaba and Mushin. Hence, Yaba, Surulere, Iddo, Oyingbo, Apapa were part of the Colony of Lagos and NEVER a part of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, not even Western Nigeria. Apapa was a very afluent neighbourhood. It is just now that commercial activities have dominated the area. A great part of Apapa was really a very calm and quiet neighbourhood with lots of expats living there. Apapa is now a shadow of what it used to be. It's just like Nigeria, totally ran aground!

I agree 100% to all you said. I am a mainland bread my parents have their home their and job took me to island VI first and lekki phase 1 and been living on the island till now that I now own my property in Ajah. Basic island challenges are bad running water if not treated and flood issues in some areas when their is heavy down pore of rain. Aside those challenges business wise, security and amenities island is way better.

You tried tho to give a balance view tho you over generalized in several areas. 1. On accomodation, Ikeja GRA, Opebi, Adeniyi Jones, Omole are very pricey and match several places on the Island save Banana Island. Infrastructure in Ikeja is ok. 2. On Business, for an entrepreneur bootstapping, it makes more sense starting on the mainland and later expand or move to the Island if not. 3. Ilupeju has the largest concentration of Indian expats in Nigeria because manufacturing jobs are on the mainland.

Effective sewage systems are a basic hallmark of a functioning city, town, or village. During the rainy season especially, sewerage gets washed into the lagoon and becomes even more contaminated. Why haven't the government fixed this yet. Millions living in that city and drinkable tap water is a luxury?

What account for the long hold up (traffic) in Lagos?
- The population: Lagos is a small state and accommodates 10% (22m) of the whole country. The landmass is small and water also eats the major chunk of the landmass.
- Poor road infrastructure: The road infrastructure is bad. They didn't plan for the future. A state like Lagos should have a good light rail system. They are already building that. They will finish next year. They are also planning to build a 4th bridge that will link the mainland to the Island. The three existing presently are overwhelmed. Also, the Govt is planning to tap into water transportation. Since water cut across the city.
- Citizens: The majority of citizens don't obey traffic rules
- The nonequilibrium of development: Some part of the state has a lot of opportunities while some have very little. Govt focus on areas where they get more taxes, that's what makes some areas not to develop. What do you expect from humans? They move to where opportunities are.
In summary, leadership failure.

Lekki which is an area in Lagos island, are 99% dominanted by Nigerians, that also includes VI, Ikoyi . So the part which you said they are dominanted by expats are not that much.
