      Not really funny to reflect on though if you think about it. I had a friend who graduated high school with me lose his life in the shootings in Aurora IL recently. He had taken the job as one of the head men in the plant and some guy who was in the process of getting fired shot him and several other people. The last thing my friend said to his wife was through a text, "I love you. I've been shot." Now his wife is a widow and his kids don't have a father anymore. It is very sad. So killing co-workers/ex-co-workers is not really good to joke about.

      I don't think we should equate the events of a fiction that involves aliens that speak the same languague, can breathe in various planets, has time travel and superpowers with our crude reality.
      Besides that, the "co-workers" of the character are reprehensible, since their "business" is killing and slaving other people. Our morality doesn't match with the morality of that characters, hence why they can't be held by the same regard.

    "He was scared of us... Scared that a Super Saiyan would be born, to rise up and overthrow him... Please, Kakarot... Destroy... Frieza... He made me... What I am..." -Vegeta's first dying words, after his fight, realizing that he was not the Super Saiyan of legend that he had talked about during his fight with Frieza. He realized that the legendary Super Saiyan was Goku, and he gave that recognition to someone who was an enemy, and beneath him, just a few months earlier. That Vegeta's dying words are probably of the most important things in his character.

    Vegeta changes from villian to anti-hero is brilliant enough on it’s own, but what you may not have realized is how he stops wearing armor. Less and less, the metaphor of his armor being a ‘shield’ or ‘barrier’ that Vegeta initially puts up either on himself, or in front of, to keep himself from being injured or hurt. This is both literal and metaphorical. He’s still working for Frieza in the Saiyan Saga, and as he rebels from that old life, wears less and less armor, slowly lowering his defenses and trusting in others more. It also serves to abandon his old lifestyle he discarded, as he worked to gain more strength, heavily taking cues from Goku’s somewhat minimalistic attire. (The Gi Goku wears does nothing to defend him in battle.)
    Vegeta’s change is both physical and mental, he was willing to destroy Earth to kill Goku, laughing maniacally, unstable and erratic, by the climax of Z, he’s older, more focused, and learned from his many errors.

    Vegeta is an ideal anti-hero, and his development was/is amazing throughout the series. One thing that irks me though is that the anti hero/dark hero role is glorified far more than it should be, and it's obvious from the way people talk about Vegeta when compared to Goku, or even characters like Batman and Superman. They go as far to ignore that Goku is the sole reason he began to change, as mentioned in your last video about Goku.

    • @wdaniel76
      @wdaniel76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@tl8211 I specifically mentioned Vegeta, who's motivation and change was directly tied to Goku until the end of Z, with him saying so himself during the Kid Buu fight.

    • @amurorayrx
      @amurorayrx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@tl8211 Well duh, thankfully there isn't just one reason for characters to change. That said, your "FAR, FAR, FAR" should really be reduced to simply "far" at most, as Goku was still a NECESSARY reason and is recognized as such by any of the characters changed by him.
      What Bulma and Trunks did to Vegeta was to resocialize him, teach him how to live as something other than a warrior, a way of living Goku himself struggles with a bit. It looks like you're confusing this socialization part with the actual changing of heart, which is why you also mentioned Roshi.
      Anyway, it was because of Goku that Vegeta was able to be anywhere near those other people to begin with, and considering he was an irreverent cold-blooded murder, I'd say Goku's part was the most vital, making the other aspects possible.
      To put it simply, Goku wasn't the one raising all these characters, conducting their countinued growth. Rather, Goku was the big trigger, he was the responsible for putting other characters in a position to grow differently and in a more positive way.

    • @wdaniel76
      @wdaniel76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@tl8211 That doesn't make sense, given Vegeta's speech about his own growth. He sought to emulate Goku and the source of his strength, which included getting a family. He didn't even do a good job of it, hence him admitting to not even giving Trunks affection since he was an infant. Vegeta also threw them out emotionally for a chance to attain enough power to defeat Goku. Bulma and Trunks weren't his reasons for improving or changing, they're what he got on the way to changing, and that change was tied to Goku.

      If it weren't for Goku. Vegeta would have definitely stayed evil and probably also wouldn't even be alive.
      Vegeta as a fellow Saiyan is the only one who has ever been able to truly understand what Goku fights for. It may not seem like it, but at their basis Goku and Vegeta are very similar.
      The thing about Goku and Vegeta is..
      Goku was born extraordinarily weak for Saiyan standards
      Vegeta has always been strong as he was born as the naturally most powerful Saiyan in History.
      (Except for Broly, who was considerd to be a freak of nature and is basically a Saiyan God in standards) To put it simple, he was a Elite amongst the Elite Saiyans. Hence why his Pride and need for that entitlement is that big.
      And it has already been stated countless times, that naturally Vegeta is much stronger than Goku.
      If you don't understand what i mean, than go rewatch the Majin Saga. And pay very close attention to Goku's words and Vegeta's reactions from the moment he turned Majin. Cause there is a very particular scene when they're in The World Tournament and where Goku does something very surprising to someone. And from there on, listen and pay attention very closely to what's actually happening uptil Vegeta's sacrifice and what actually lead to that event.
      Regarding to Goku's and Vegeta's into being the strongest. Vegeta is the one who's naturally stronger but Goku is the one with the greater potential.
      Gohan & Trunks surpass both their Father's on their best traits. Gohan is the one who holds the biggest potential out of all the of them and Trunks(Future Trunks) is the one who's naturally the most powerful out of all of them.
      If you just look at how Future Trunks almost caught up to both Goku & Vegeta in the amount of short time he had in the Zamasu Saga and how Gohan at his absolute limits was a able to go completely toe to toe with a Super Saiyan Kefla and him in his Ultimate state. Kefla at standards may have been more powerful but Gohan in his Ultimate state when put to the test was able to go completely toe to toe with her untill they eventually both passed out.
      In the Manga Trunks in his Super Saiyan 2 form was able to extert himself to the point where he forced Goku to go from a Super Saiyan 3 to a Super Saiyan God to stop his attack.
      Ultimate state for Gohan is essentially the full strength he would have possessed as a Super Saiyan 2 if he had actually fully mastered the form, without any of it's limitations such as stamina & energy drawbacks the form brings. Ultimate state for Gohan is basically a gift given to him where he can enter into his Full untapped potential. All that he has to do to become stronger in his Ultimate state is train his base form and push his Ultimate state to further heights. That's how he'll be able to surpass both Goku & Vegeta.

He had a plan, he cared for others. He seemed like the strategist. At the beginning of Z all he wanted to do with Gohan was go fishing. I don't get that from Goku anymore in Super. All he cares about is fighting now and that seems to be it now. I feel like Goku wouldn't even want to go fishing with Gohan anymore because he has to train or fight. @@DoggyP00 I think he was poorly written early in Super, when they retreaded his rivalry with Goku, but I think he was fine later on.
      He was far less of a tsundere with Trunks; when he was despairing over the broken Time Machine, he cheered Trunks right up by telling him to never give up hope.
      Z Vegeta never would've been that forward and supportive.
      He openly supported him during the Father-Son Galick Gun, took a blow from Zamasu for him, etc.
      And I don't see how the pride scenes were out of character? That's Vegeta's thing.
      I loved his scene against Jiren (when he was all tapped out) where he told Jiren that he'd never understand what it's like to have something to protect.
      He's embraced fighting for the right reasons. It's a step forward from his turn to being a good person at the end of Z.

    Example: Griffith and Guts in Berserk. Griffith's betrayal hurts so much more because it was build up over multiple manga volumes. Meanwhile Guts slowly opening up to other people again after what he has witnessed and starting to show sympathy towards them just feels wholesome.
    Or to stay with Vegeta again: Majin Vegeta's suicide attack to save the people he loved wouldn't have meant a single thing if he wasn't around for multiple years.

      That's odd because Vegeta was always an ass, and that is reinforced by the environment he grew up in. Saiyans in general don't have the same normal attachment patterns inherent to humans, they are quite callous even when it comes to parenting and nourishment; Vegeta is a prince, herald to nobility of his own planet, that must have been a monumental weight and shock value for him and probably contributed to some sort of narcissism and inferiority complex. Vegeta would have continued to be an ass even if Freeza hadn't exploded his planet; Vegeta's temperament and attachment style is common to most Saiyans, he just so happens to have trauma and prejudice added to the mix. Goku would also have been an ass if he hadn't been dispatched to earth for his low class status and dispensability: saiyans are evil by default.

His methods are definitely wrong but it usually makes more sense. The frustrations he has as his people expects him to be the better or even the best since he's royalty and part of the elite. His redemption in the Buu Saga was one of best written storyline especially in the whole DBZ lore. Truly, he has the best character growth in the whole series. -Bit late here, but still wanna share why I love Vegeta so much.
    For me, the epitome of his character is when, in the T.O.P, Jiren keeps calling him out for his lack of purity and selfish way of fighting. And Vegeta, right before using his Final Flash, says:
    *You say I'm arrogant, I say damn right!*
    This is what makes him stand out for me. He knows his flaws, he knows what his attitude is and he has acknowledged how that type of attitude can harm others, showed when he let Cell reach his perfect form and then inmediately in the next arc he sacrificed himself to stop Majin Buu. He recognizes that he's not perfect, but that's what makes him be, well, him. And that's why this line is so powerful: he is ruthless, merciless and sometimes a douche, but he has accepted himself as he is. He no longer feels like a worthless guy under the foot of Frieza. And that's why he has all the right in the world to say,
    *I'm the almighty Prince Vegeta!!*

    I really appreciate that you identified Goku as a morally grey character. Because he is, really- he's become less about fighting for something and more for fighting for the sake of fighting.
    Vegeta, though, is always fighting for something. His pride, his own safety, his goals, his family, his new planet- there's always a reason Vegeta seeks new heights. Sure, Goku says he's training just in case X happens, but he prioritizes his own strength a lot more than can be waved off. Battle comes before family. Vegeta initially did not give a fuck about the concept of loved ones. Now, though, he never puts anything above them. At this point, I think Vegeta is a better person than Goku.

      Bulma, Goku and the Z Fighters had a hand in his development over both series. Had he never met them, I don't know what would have been. I think some anti heroes are also drawn to the heroes as well because they know that they won't stab them in the back, like the villains would. They may be using the good guys, but you have to admire them for seeing some good in the antihero and giving them second chances. The hero, in most cases, can always be counted on to help out the antihero and even the antihero knows this. The villain, not so much.

    Kinda random, but I like that it wasn't just Bulma being the reason for Vegeta's character development; Vegeta already exhibited anti-hero traits before and beyond Bulma with characters like Krillin and Gohan and making Vegeta's redemption a more genuine effort. Bulma became one of the most important people to Vegeta, but she's not the only one. I hate that "she (love interest) is the only one who can understand him" trope in couples so much so to see that being averted with Vegeta and Bulma makes their relationship and Vegeta's character development more realistic.

    I just loved Vegeta because i believe he is the character that has changed the most, and when you saw in super how much he cared for bulma and the fact that he got closer to his family which i still think Goku has not done, Oh speaking of which in Dragon ball noticed how many bad guys become good, Piccolo,Vegeta,Android 17 and 18, Majin buu (though could argue with him was more child like)

      Android 17 & 18 were bad guys? I thought that was where Trunks Timeline differed from the Main Timeline. Kami went & said that they didn't seem so evil, & only agreed to merge with Piccolo because of the threat Cell posed. Majin Buu removed all the evil from him which eventually became Kid Buu.

    Manga ch 44 spoilers: Vegeta’s greatest moments are his heroic ones. Which is in large part due to his evil past, making it even more compelling when he does heroic things. What may be regarded as one of his most heroic moments is in DBS manga 44 when he saves a Namekian child from Moro showing that not only has he moved on from his evil ways, he will actively pursue atonement for his past deeds when the opportunity present themself, especially when he has the chance to beat the crap out of a bad guy.

    My father has always told me, “The anti-hero is a bad guy who does good things.”
    While that isn’t all anti-heroes, it certainly fits Vegeta as an anti-hero, a character who has bad ends that are achieved by working with the heroes to fulfill their goals.
    One character who I don’t see mentioned often as an anti-hero character is Brutaka from Lego’s Bionicle franchise. His path from (mostly) hero to villain to anti-hero began with a losing of faith in his god that led him to ally with evil people to pursue one of the strongest mask of power in the Bionicle universe, the Mask of Life. For those who don’t know, this mask has the power to revive dying and dead gods and eradicate all life in the universe; it’s dangerous in the wrong hands. Brutaka found himself punished for his crimes, but when he witnessed true evil in a duel against the main villain of the Bionicle series, Makuta Teridax, he found himself in the anti-hero role by facing off against him and giving the Makuta a run for his money. In thwarting the Makuta’s plans, Brutaka was given probationary status in the order he once was a part of and eventually went on to lead the Bionicle franchise’s version of the Suicide Squad. I think Brutaka’s story is worth a read if you have the time.

      Something else when you consider Vegeta's place as Goku's rival...is the first thing fans have done with characters like Hit and Jiren is measure them against Vegeta, and some people dislike them because they don't measure up because Vegeta is so compelling in that role. I'd argue his rivalry also benefits Goku as a character since by rivaling Goku's power it gives a measuring stick for that ever growing power, and he's the only one who's consistently been able to keep up (which given how DBZ left ALOT of characters in the dust power wise is saying something).

      @animateddream1035 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Contrary to what this other guy's saying, I'm glad to finally find someone who agrees that Gohan becoming a scholar was a brilliant form of character development. The only way to progress Gohan's character otherwise in my opinion was to make him stronger than Goku, which wouldn't happen and wouldn't make sense, also wouldn't be as enjoyable because he doesn't have the same character standing that Goku does to give DBZ it's entire appeal. I mean who else but Goku as a character would openly stand up as the mascot for the 2020 Olympics...like seriously, being completely real. I think the complaints about Gohan being considerably weaker, although I don't want to be rude, seem somewhat infantile. I found his character progression interesting because he didn't subscribe to the initial theme of DBZ but demonstrated, after, at one point, being the strongest in the series, that one can follow their dream, no matter what it may be, even if it means sacrificing something one is good at, one has to consider the entirety of their reality, Gohan hated fighting, and used his ability and will to fight and overcome having to live a life of fighting. After the Cell saga, to me, Gohan won his battle, I think that Gohan sacrificing his life of fighting for his life of academics was a really mature form of character development.
      I know it has no place here but I would liken it to the character of Kakashi from Naruto, he was never the absolute strongest in the original/Shippuden series and in the new boruto series people complain that they don't portray his strength enough. But I always feel like his character progression was brilliant, it's like "He's been through so much, he did what he had to do, he saw through his accomplishments he's old, retired and happy, the guy's chillin!" To me it's brilliant.
      To me, these types of character gives a sense of realism.

Like Bulma in GT helped aid Vegeta, Gohan could use his acquired knowledge to suggest battle plans and improvements to training or technology, give ideas, or point out the weaknesses of an individual, something like that. Someone suggested this quite a while ago, not sure where.

    Western viewers (like myself) have a very jaded view on characters and characterization in general due to the fact that Goku, as portrayed in America, was already very similar personality wise to Superman. Most 90's kids watched Superman The Animated Series, as well as Batman The Animated Series. Superman and Batman also had crossover episodes, and most westerners prefer Batman over Superman, though Superman is highly admired. Vegeta fits more in the "Batman" mold because he's willing to do things in a way that perhaps, Superman (Goku) wouldn't. I.E. Like the time Batman hid from the Justice League that he had contingency plans to incapacitate every single member just in case they go rogue.
    The contingency plans got stolen and then the Justice League almost died. And when the founding members of the Justice League (Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter) held a meeting with Batman over it, Batman not only refused to apologize, but he said that "If you can't see that I'm right then I quit," and walked away from the Justice League. Vegeta fits this mold to most Westerners.
    Overall Western viewers love the concept of Anti-Heroes and sympathetic villains/Anti-Villains because the market was over saturated with Superman knock-offs for over forty years. The Nore genre rose to prominence (you know like Sin City) and that put more emphasis on the "tragic hero with a dark past" and not the "wide eyed naive young hero with a heart of gold" (Luke Skywalker for instance is less popular than Han Solo and Darth Vader).
    I used to think this way for a very long time I watched Hunter x Hunter 2011. Gon to me is the greatest anime protagonist to have ever existed. Why? Because of his layers. He has so many different layers to uncover and unpack and what makes him such an interesting character is because as an audience we don't need to hear Gon monoluging to himself for 10 minutes about a situation to understand how he thinks (Like Killua). Instead he will ALWAYS say what he thinks and what he means.
    He doesn't believe in lying or being dishonest or deceitful, and I think that actually puts some people off because they're used to characters NOT sharing SOMETHING about themselves.
    But since Gon used to be reprimanded harshly for lying by his haunt (In the 1999 anime Gon lied to his aunt about why he went outside to the forest and she literally kicked him out and locked the door and refused to let him inside until he told the truth) he found no benefit to do so. This is in stark contrast to Killua who grew up as an assassin and was encouraged to lie and be deceitful.
    Another thing that makes Gon interesting (and what helped me understand Goku better in turn since Gon is loosely based off of him) is that Gon has, according to TV troops, an Orange-Blue morality. What does that mean exactly?
    "These characters have a moral framework that is so utterly alien and foreign to human experience that we can't peg them as "good" or "evil". They aren't a Chaotic Neutral Unfettered, though they may seem to act terrifyingly randomly; nor are they necessarily a Lawful Neutral Fettered, because our and their understanding of "law" as a concept may not even be equivalent. There might be a logic behind their actions, it's just that they operate with entirely different sets of values and premises with which to draw their conclusions."
    In layman's terms, Goku and Gon do NOT operate under the moral framework of society. Instead, they operated based off of their OWN values and their OWN set of rules that other people CANNOT comprehend nor see the logic behind so because in the end it only makes sense to THEM. The only time it will make sense to other people would be the RESULTS of their choices that turn out to be a positive for them.
    One example from Dragonball Super that paints Goku in a negative light to Western audiences is the episode when Goku and Krillin were sent my Master Roshi to get a special herb and Krillin was traumatized by the illusions of all of his past enemies that killed him (Tambourine, Frieza, and Super Buu) and Goku COULD NOT understand why. This caused Krillin to shout angrily at Goku that after all these years he still didn't understand him.
    That's because Goku DOES NOT HOLD ILL WILL TOWARDS PEOPLE. The only reason that Krillin was traumatized was not just because he died by them, and because he was too weak to defend himself, but because he also HATED them for KILLING him. Goku has NEVER hated ANYONE for killing him. He doesn't spare it a second though. His moral framework and mind does not process this. In fact, Goku finds it FAR more appalling if someone wants to hurt his FRIENDS.
    This is very similar to Gon in Hunter x Hunter, when he was matched up in the Hunter Exam against Hanzo (a trained Shinobi) and was brutally beaten. Unfortunately the match could only be over if one of the opponents said "I give up". So Hanzo brutalized Gon as much as he could until he VOMITED SO MUCH THAT HE COULD NOT VOMIT ANYMORE. When Gon still refused to give up, Hanzo BROKE one of his arms. After all of that Gon STILL refused to surrender and when Hanzo threatened to cut off both of Gon's legs (which would kill Gon and disqualify Hanzo, but Hanzo could come still take the Hunter Exam the next year) Gon STILL refused to give up.
    Then Hanzo quit the match and when he was asked by Killua why he quit, he said that it was because "When I looked into Gon's eyes, I didn't see any hatred. Usually when you torture someone, they stare at you with hatred and resentment for harming them." This meant that Gon, like Goku does NOT take it personally if he is severely hurt by someone. Because to physical harm to them means far, far, FAR less than physical harm to the ones they care about.
    Anyways this was a long post and now I have half a mind to make a video on this topic but I hope now that people have a much clearer understanding on Goku's character and why he's so unique in special (as well as Gon) in comparison to anti-heroes such as Vegeta or Killua. They all play their roles well and now I can relate more to Goku and Gon than I could to Vegeta or Killua (although I'm more pragmatic like they are) and that's because we should all strive to be like Goku and Gon. Pure hearted.

    At the end of the day it all boils down to entertainment. And there's absolutely no question about who is more entertaining between the two.
