      Funny thing is, he was obviously awake when he allowed Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta, A LOT of time after Buu's rampage, which East Kai must have informed him about. So why didn't he immediately go to Earth and destroy Majin Buu's orb? Given that the monster was still alive and had showed interest in killing his life link partner, Beerus - also given his personality - should have IMMEDIATELY dealt with him.
      And let's not get started with why the Kais didn't think about waking him up to fight Buu to begin with. He's not very kind with those who disturb him during his naps, true, but the Kais (for obvious reasons) shouldn't be worried about getting hurt by him.

    Beerus really does embody an actually cat:
    -He likes you for food.

    -He sleeps for amazing periods of time.

    Beerus' character is totally fine, the problem is they gave him WAY too much screen time. As one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse, his presence should carry a lot of weight and be used sparingly. They should have used his nonchalant and gluttonous attitude as a reason to keep him off screen, and allow Whis to interact with Goku and Vegeta by himself while Beerus is off doing things he finds more worthy of his time. There's no reason a god of destruction should have been turned into some guy that just casually hangs out with mortals all the time because he has nothing better to do. Narratively, nothing would change if you removed Beerus from 95% of the scenes involving Whis, Goku, and Vegeta, but his status as a character to be respected would have still been intact. As a destroyer god, Beerus shouldn't be sitting around watching any fight he claims to not have an interest in who the winner is, he should be treated as someone who's above the squabbles of mortals, only appearing when his interest in a fight is genuinely piqued, whether it be because of the entertainment value he'd find in the fight or because the stakes or so high he can't ignore it. This way Beerus' presence during a conflict would signify that an event carries serious weight, instead of his presence simply sucking all the tension out of the fight because big uncle Beerus could just step in and save his friends.

    • @trashasaurus
      @trashasaurus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +178

      Agreed, Death Note did it correctly with Ryuk, he always made it very clear he didn't care what happened he was just there for the entertainment and they wrote him as such. If Ryuk stepped in to help/influence Light anytime he was in trouble or couldn't figure out what to do it would of made the show way less enjoyable.

      I think some of this is relatively skewed since 3/5 arcs of Super do need Beerus' presence. The U6 fight and the ToP do need Beerus to be a spectator.
      He's been mostly forced to watch fights rather than pop in and watch it. But it really does feel weird during Resurrection F and Black Sagas, where we know that Beerus could end the entire plot before it begins because he is literally chillin with Bulma.

      I personally believe Beerus may be in search of a replacement. Whis seems to give less of a shit than Beerus, yet he takes time out to train Vegeta and Goku. Beerus while extremely lazy is still a deity with the wisdom and patience as such along with a lack of social apathy that could be theorized as usual for such a being. With Goku and Vegeta being nearly powerful enough they are seemingly not there yet mentally. Beerus is merely a shepherd(albeit lazy) allowing his apprentice to tend the flock.

    I think the ToP used Beerus well by literally restraining him, forcing him to learn to respect those who do not have a same power level, but similar determination. • @fellasmann

      Baikanon I think you have a point. The ToP gave us an arc where Beerus no longer is a safety net and the cast has to win with no win buttons or get out of jail free cards. I don’t think he’s a bad character, and even if he has problems, he could’ve been so much worse.

      @James Godby Which is the dilemma for writing Beerus. If he needs to be involved, then you're beyond Goku's ability to yell himself into a new hairstyle. Beerus' power is so far beyond everyone that he is better used for dramatic storytelling, but when you have a series based on people fighting each other, Beerus engaging would rob tension because of his God-level power. The series can't use him for what his character is actually good at and doesn't want to spend time with what he could actually contribute to a story.

    Beerus is a case of a good character the writers don't know how to use. As you said, he's often there to be there, but his presence also means that problems can be introduced that only he's capable of solving. How ridiculously amazing would it have been that if instead of Goku literally pressing a win button at the end of the Black saga, Beerus instead shows up -- he states that the score between him and Zamasu is 1-1, and that he was of a mind to settle it, and that the circumstances now give him the opportunity to prove just how unfit Zamasu is to call himself a god. Zamasu, drunk on power, says that Beerus is no longer able to hold a candle to him, but after a brief struggle likely suggesting Zamasu is right, Beerus suddenly reveals he's been screwing with him and blinks him and the nightmare he's created out of existence, once and for all. In response to the cast's baffled reaction, Beerus dismissively reminds them that he's the god of destruction; there is nothing that has been created that cannot therefore be destroyed.
    This re-establishes Beerus' place in the story, and also as a threat should he one day feel the same way about any of the other characters -- because Beerus' ability is not limited to numbers, there's always a way he could defeat Goku if he wanted to, no matter how powerful Goku had become. It also downplays the "team pet" role he's been shoved into, a reminder that he's unpredictable and capricious, and therefore dangerous; he's _not_ the protagonists' friend. What would Goku do if Beerus decided that he was the latest victim of his whimsy?
    I'd argue that Trunks getting a win -- in a different fashion than Spirit Bomb Sword -- would have been a better way to do it, but supposing they did the shitshow they did anyway, a lot of people would have had different feelings about that shitshow if Beerus was essentially used the same way as Zeno is, but because Beerus has indirect investment in Zamasu's defeat -- Zamasu has led to his demise in Zamasu's timeline, and he's made something of a mockery of him in the process -- and because Beerus is still a regular feature in the plot, it'd be more satisfying to have him handle the matter, and to have a "refreshing" of his character and his place in the story. Most people loved his handling of his own timeline's Zamasu; a callback to that and to the fact that Goku still has a tangible background threat would have been looked upon largely favorably, I feel. Plus, it gets around Dragon Ball's perpetual catch-22, of who the "strongest" character is; what makes this Beerus dangerous is that it doesn't matter _how_ "strong" his opponent is. Not only is Goku unproven to be more outright powerful than Beerus is, it would imply that even if he were, he could still _lose_ to Beerus. This also puts a higher emphasis on how Dragon Ball can best get around its catch-22, via an emphasis on strategy and exploiting an opponent's weaknesses; if Goku had to avoid the looming threat that is Beerus' win condition, how would he fight him, if he had to? These are the questions that get people having nerdy conversations at the proverbial water cooler.
    Beerus was the best part of Battle of Gods -- although Vegeta is certainly second -- and for good reason. But like many of Toriyama's characters, he was introduced for a specific purpose, and once that purpose was exhausted, so to did his role in the story. That doesn't mean the character itself is a problem; much like many of the now neglected characters in the series, if more was written specifically to feature him, instead of put him there for the sake of doing so, we'd be reminded of what was so enjoyable about him in the first place, and he has more going for him than most characters, besides; his status as an X-factor can keep him fresh and intriguing, but his poor utilization and token inclusions have hurt him more than anything.

      This would've been a much better direction for his character arc since the start, instead of 'redeeming' him in one movie's time.
      He's no longer that unpredictable factor that could bite you in the neck when you ask for help. He's just a plot device, and exists solely to help move the key players into position, or as a deux ex machina.

      @@tiablue9106 Yeah I agree they really should have gone into more detail on what Shenron can and can’t affect regarding those stronger than him. Cause sometimes it felt a little inconsistent, since he could forcibly take a bomb from Android 18 and Android 17, but couldn’t return them to being human despite being able to return planets from being completely destroyed (that one might just be Parunga, but it’s not like they aren’t as easily accessible thanks to Instant Transmission). Parunga apparently couldn’t teleport Goku to Earth against his will after Namek was destroyed but could do so for everyone else on Namek, including Piccolo and Vegeta who would definitely be WAAAY more powerful, with Vegeta wanting to fight Frieza and so would likely have been unwilling, and since the wish was specified to exclude Goku and Frieza, it makes me think at that time it might have been able to forcibly teleport them as well. The ‘rule’ really needed fleshing out.
      Now on situations where they don’t do things because of their pride, while I understand why they wouldn’t use the Dragon Balls to solve the issue, that doesn’t remove the fact they could easily use them to do so, and so the tension does a feel a little fake, at least in my opinion.

    "Imagine how suspenseful Freeza's defeat of Goku would have been, had Vegeta been the only one left to settle things"
    Not very suspenseful at all. We know that Freeza's tired, injured, and burning through energy at an alarming rate.
    We know Vegeta's been training alongside Goku. Freeza had no chance, and we can see that when Vegeta casually beats him like a Freeza Soldier.
    Beerus wasn't the issue with that movie. The issue was Freeza's new form was a joke. We're told it's 'stronger than Blue', but it never really proves it, and in the end Freeza has to get in a cheap shot(in such a stupid way) to beat Goku.
    Freeza's power crapping out is what really killed the tension. If Goku had been backed into a corner, and required Vegeta's help to stand a chance against Freeza, forcing them to work together(ala Super Broly) this would have been WAY better.
    Removing Beerus doesn't remove how little tension Freeza delivers, when he's running out of gas, and has to get help from his henchmen to not get his ass handed to him any further.

    "He also provides a massive downside that Dragon Ball, and Dragon Ball Z never had to contend with. A lose of tension."
    I would say the dragon balls themselves did that plenty. You know, the things the series is named after? Someone dies? No problem. Just wish them back. Personally, I'd like it to be written in the show somehow that the regular dragon balls get destroyed/deactivated permanently or something, and the super dragon balls are the only remaining namesake artifacts of the show. I like the idea behind the super dragon balls. They're far more powerful than the regular dragon balls, yet they alleviate far less tension than the regular ones. The regular dragon balls, are the main casts play thing that they've grown to completely take for granted now, while the super dragon balls present themselves with a heavy restriction of usage in that you basically can't use them without the aid of the gods.
    The problem with Super is that they have both, Beerus (and Whis) as well as the regular dragon balls. I'd prefer Beerus to replace the regular dragon balls as the thing the main cast uses as a crutch. Because unlike the regular dragon balls, Beerus is sort of a wild card. He may not agree with you. He may not be your friend in a particular situation. He may choose to be lazy and not lift a damn finger. He may outright get angry at you and become your enemy. Where as, the dragon balls, you just gather them fuckers and wish for whatever the hell you damn want (okay, not whatever you want, but still...).
    The Dragon Ball franchise, as its name implies, needs to have dragon balls in them. In DB and Z, there were only the regular ones, so they couldn't be replaced. But now there's super dragon balls. If those were the only ones, the main cast couldn't use them as a crutch. There could easily be plotlines where the cast has to convince the deities to let them use them, which would obviously be met with great resistance.

      Then, the show’s name wouldn’t make sense anymore. Besides, they activated the dragon balls several times now that I checked up. So, Dende no longer being able to create more will be seen as convenient for the plot.
      And New Namek has still its set of dragon balls. Taking out the Earth’s Dragon Balls will just move the scenario to space. And if we remove them as well, then the title would make even less sense.
      The dragon balls should be the items around which the plot goes. You can’t do it with the Super Dragon Balls. Too big, too hidden in two universes, and limited by language. It worked with Zamasu because he was a god, but he still needed Zuno to know their location ( And we still don’t know how in heaven he moved those things across two universes ). Though, you can’t bring more evil gods out nowhere that magically knows about the SDB. Even Beerus didn’t know much about them while Champa was probably helped by Vados in that regard.
      The Earth’s dragon balls never removed stakes as they can’t do anything to beings stronger than their creator, so pretty much no one. They are meant to restore the status quo AFTER the battle, which we don’t know they’ll win.

He was arrogant in the beginning of the Battle of Gods but but the time TOP rolls around, this tournament is used to make the gods closer to their mortals.
    Beerus was always indifferent to mortals but after meeting Goku and his friends he starts to see how important mortals are to the job he has. He eventually develops respect and he starts to see them as kind of like his children. It is unknown if he will ever be a full convert like Piccolo but being among mortals can possibly make him a better god of Destruction.

But then Namek got introduced, giving the cast access to another set of Dragon Balls that got around that. And while that was fine for a one-off, the arc made it so that Dende was reintroduced and then he made a new set of Dragon Balls that basically said "Free come back to life card whenever you want".
      So now the only real tension is if Earth and Namek are destroyed AND Zen'o doesn't let them use the Super Dragon Balls for some reason.

      That's fair. Super is certainly not on par with Z in that department.

    • @Inviabledude45
      @Inviabledude45 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Auxified I mean not really. Z had no tension after the frieza saga because of the namikian dragonballs and really instant transmission. At any point during saga outside of buu goku could litteraly teleport the enemy to otherworld and leave them there since they couldn't teleport. Also the namikan dragonballs completely remove any tension whatsoever as the main cast at any point in the show can get 3 wishes. Heck even the frieza saga itself was using the namikian dragon balls to fix what happened in the sayain saga essiantly making any tension in the sayain saga really not matter. Since dragonball is a story we know the main character will prevail in the end. What we usually don't know is what will the cost be such as a friends death. Since the dragonballs remove the concept of death and destruction compelty from the show the only time the zfigthers are actually in danger is in super when the universe is put on the line. So really tension that came from the orginal series is self created because it isn't there if you actually understand how the dragon balls work. Also this isn't even hidden. The show directly tells you there isn't tension when goku directly tells gohan don't worry about killing people because of the dragon balls and piccloo tells super buu directly to kill everyone on earth. So really super is the most tension db has had since the sayain saga and rof is the same amount of tension as anh other saga. Actually more tension because frieza can just blow up the planet multiple times and than go to namek if the namekians try to help the zfighters. One thing I will say is that rof did try to force tension by having goku get knocked by a stupid Lazar in blue form where as vegeta had to lower his durabltiy just to get hurt by krillen. Multiple times in z mutliple things such as dende healing everyone drastically lowered the tension. I don't think having a lack of tension is bad as not everything has to be super danger all the time but if you don't consider it a critsim of z than it's not a critsim of super. I mean you could argue atmosphere but not tension.

    • @Auxified
      @Auxified 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Inviabledude45 I would disagree with the majority of your points. I think Z had a lot of tension in every arc and saga. I believe that your arguments are too heavily dependent on meta knowledge. For example, even if we choose to assume the protagonist will overcome the villain, that doesn't mean all of the tension of the story is loaded onto the cost of success (through side characters & other intangibles).
      Putting the protagonist into dire situations that look grim creates tons of tension, even if we know they won't cease to exist. This is because the series is about the journey not the destination. This is why Goku fighting Frieza on Namek, which is about to explode completely eclipses the Goku vs Golden fight in ROF. In ROF Frieza is not really taken seriously by anyone. Even when Goku gets shot he just gets a senzu bean and moves along. Compare that to how Vegeta acted in the Namek saga, where he was completely terrified of Frieza, and every engagement was a severe risk of death. If the main characters of your show aren't even intimidated by the villain then why should we be?
      As for the hypothetical suggestions like Goku using IT to deposit enemies into otherworld, we should probably just assume he can't or would not do that, since it never occurred. Cell had IT anyway, and maybe Buu would have destroyed it(?). It's also worth noting that the dragon balls have a long cooldown, and only work when the guardian is alive. If Earth were wiped out and then the guardian on new namek were killed then it might have even lead to an entire other journey to see if dragon balls existed on other planets (kind of like how GT went).
      Lastly, even if we say that the tournament of power had tension, its still only half of super, and a lot of it was fighting clowns that were unworthy of fully powering up. I still think it was pretty good, but comparing it to Z? It's no contest for me man.

    • @Inviabledude45
      @Inviabledude45 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Auxified what your talking about is atmorespere. Z had a more serious atmosphere and tone but zero tension. Super had more tension because beerus and their other opponents actually raised the stakes to the point where the namikan dragonballs simply wouldn't help the zfighters where in z even the end fight was won because of the namikian dragonballs. I mean at any point during the buu saga they could have just wished ultmaite gohan back into the fight with the dragonballs and win that way. Z creates fake tension for a more serious atmosphere. It's really the same as what rof did by making goku go down to a lazar( from krillen injuring vegeta the zfigthers have to actually lower their defense to be injured meaning goku just randomly decided be wanted to be Lazar level) the result is even though it leads to amazing moments like vegeta taking down frieza or the final spirit bomb to end the serious. The reason z felt more tense is because it also centered around the development of characters giving fights more meaning than just oh this character dies. For example even though the original fight with the androids with vegeta and goku's first super sayain fight with goku serve no stakes whatsoever they are still development moments for goku and vegeta which makes the fight feel more serious or more important than they really are. So overall what your comparing between super and z isn't tension but atmosphere and overall how they present the fights. Because when you look at the stories super actually has more tension because of who the villains are. Frieza actually knows about the namikan dragonballs and the dragonballs and as well as the ablity to breathe in space. Beerus is a litteral god and everytime goku talks to the omni king it could mean the end of the universe. It has more tension but the overall atmosphere is much lighter proably done on purpose because akriya toriyama figured that you cant really do a serious tone with ranking up states without it losing its impact. So even though super does rank up the states creating more tension it doesn't focus on this tension and more on how goku and the others react to it. Since vegeta isn't cocky and egotistical because oh my pride and goku overall is super light hearted it leads to a more upbeat atmosphere than serious atmosphere.

    • @Auxified
      @Auxified 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Inviabledude45 I agree with your points about atmosphere, but not about tension. I don't want to get too technical but it's probably important to do so. Tension is defined as the stress/strain from facing an opposing force. There are definitely points of high tension in Super, like you mentioned when Goku first talks to the grand zeno, and even picks him up, but these moments are rare.
      In my opinion fights like Goku vs Majin Vegeta had some of the largest tension in all of DB, because of Vegeta's struggle with his own ideals & goals. The serious atmosphere amplified this tension, especially when Goku starts charging a ki blast at Supreme Kai for interrupting.
      Conversely I think fights like Goku vs Golden Frieza in ROF lacked tension because it was blatantly one sided from the start. It could have been very different if the plot wasn't simply that Frieza comes to earth and gets smacked down by Goku with Vegeta calmly watching (until the cheeky laser part).
      Fake tension is an interesting concept. I assume what you mean by this is that the stress/strain the characters observe from the opposing force is not "valid". For example, why does death matter if the dragon balls can just revive someone? I would argue that this is just a natural part of the dragon ball experience. For example there was no need for Master Roshi to dramatically nearly sacrifice himself to take out a weakling. You are right that fake tension in Z exists to make the atmosphere more serious, but I would say this is just a flaw of the show granting so much power to undo negative outcomes, which certainly carries over into Super.
      In summary, I think that fights in DB should have tension, especially between the "main" characters. If they aren't struggling or suffering at all then it's kind of just a fight for fun, instead of a legitimate obstacle that deserves 100%. In this regard I think Super did alright, but Z delivers every time.

With that, I know I a lot of us are waiting to hear more of your thoughts on the upcoming movie this April. You’re one of the biggest voices to a lot of folks on DB character progression and story/narrative arcs. Too understandable that you’re probably still apprehensive over the whole ordeal I’m sure you’re still battling. Regardless, have to let you know, the viewers still love you Mark. You’re a talented dude and we haven’t forgotten… Haven’t forgotten your talent, the joy you bring folks through your content, the knowledge or the deeper inter workings of plot that you impart, and your genuinely positive and hopeful spirit. Nah, I love Beerus sitting around eating ice cream while a life and death struggle cemented in a genocidal grudge rages on next to him and well BENEATH his concern. Far from removing the tension, I felt like it grounded the ballooning stakes which was absolutely a problem coming out of the Buu saga.
    I actually enjoyed the fight more because it was a welcome break from the tired "And now this is the powerfullest most undeaftable villain we have ever faced" routine. The most powerful character was not involved in the fight... at all, and that alone made it better for me. It wasn't the end of the universe, it was just a fight between two of dragonball's greatest personalities, separate from the idea that only the highest power level mattered.

    Here's the messed up thing tho, I feel beerus DOESN'T suck the tension out of everything
    In a world with 3 sets of wish granting orbs the tension in low key at a minimum compared to other shows like Naruto, Yugi oh, jojos, and even Hunter Hunter.
    In dbz if u die u can most likely be wished back and even prevent it in total by wishing for immortality and a stong body.
    It's y goku and vegeta got lucky zamasu became zamoku black or zamasu would be unbeatable.
    My point is if u die in dbz odds are u getting wished back, die in jojos, Naruto, or Hunter Hunter tho and they don't even HAVE dragonballs there, so it's either permanent or u have to go to great lengths to get that person back.
    Adding beerus to the mix I could argue STILL has tension because beerus don't do SHIT
    He won't step in and save goku or vegeta despite having the power to do so and that bugs me about HIM.
    Freiza was stomping on goku yet beerus just sat there eating a SUNDAE of all things😂
    If beerus was known to be about that action and protect the Z fighters of COURSE I'd agree with u, but rn?

  • @Flamewind11
    @Flamewind11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm a week late to this video, so I doubt anyone will see my comment. But with that said here is my opinion, I lost all sense of tension with the Dragon Ball series long before Beerus was introduced. Simply put the name is why, the dragon balls were for a majority of the time in the series what took away the tension, "Oh, half the universe is dead because of Freeza? Just wish them back to life with the dragon balls.". When the Universe Survival Arc began, I thought maybe their will be tension and stakes, but then it was revealed the super dragon balls were a prize. I knew immediately the wish was going to be bring back the erased universes, and for one last insult lets have the Zenos say this was the only wish we would allow. So ever since Beerus joined the show he has been my favorite character, and his style of comedy that sucks the tension dry actually makes me laugh because their wasn't any tension to begin with. The "problem" brought up in this episode was always in my eyes the writers having a laugh with the idea of their being tension in the show.
