I only need to say this. I also thought that he is doing the most fantastic kata. what a speed, what strength. just perfect. until I downloaded the movie and played it on a editing video software. I played it in 1/10 of a sec. the conclusion is this : The man skeeps postions. his speed prvents seeing it by the referees.
SonicPAJ He’s going too fast because he’s doing the kata without the regard for certain stances, so from a traditional and formal standpoint what he did was incorrect.
Absolutely great kata and effort. Yes, one does compromise technique for speed. But this is fast ,hard and very impressive. There is a lot of you dissecting his form and criticizing his performance. This is what is wanted by the WKF in championships, so he is performing accordingly. There is nothing worse than a kata that is done slowly or static. it doesnt show the true potential of what can be done. For spectators watching - a static kata emphasising the techniques does not inspire belief that Karate works. Remember, kata is an interpretation of techniques put into a sequence. It might not be done your way so respect the kareteka and his interpretation.
Observe the hikate hand which is constantly relaxed and not correctly positioned. The transition of the waza in this kata is being sacrificed for speed. I am fed up of seeing Yudansha constantly slapping Gi's to give the impression of a fast dynamic technique...a sound effect. This certainly isn't BUDO kata as the techniques are being sacrificed for speed. Sadly competition is morphing it into a dance. Oss
Sometimes the stances are sacrifised too much for speed. Edit: at 0:39 that knee move looked too much like mae geri (i only know how to properly spell it in my own language, not english.)
He is so awesome! Just one thing. I tried to study how he does his kata by playing it 0.25 speed on TH-cam. It doesn't seem that all the stances are done. He skips some of the stances.. Is that right?
NicsCL Yeah.Yoday he was in Romania(a stage) and he worked on Enpi, showing us how it looks like this kata, and it was awesome.Speed, focus, power, good stances, breathe. He teached me(us) all the secrets for his Enpi, but even like that I don't think I can do such a good performance
This isn't "crap." He placed 2nd for a reason. It's fast and powerful; his hikite is fine. The problem is that it isn't precise. It's not "clean," as someone mentioned earlier. And it's not that he's making mistakes; his form is just a little sloppy here.
if you take a closer look you will see that he lackes also kime and power, its fast and that is all the WKF judges want to see, it looks spectacular, it fits to tlevision and the IOC
His kata is always amazing.But...Sometimes,he does not the complete hikite. That is a bad mistake. That being said by a fan of him from Romania;I even had the ocasion to train on Enpi with him.He had a speed...Hats off!He had an unusually power behind his techniques...But a so-and-so hikite
is there any possibillity of making a slowmotion version of Valdesi's enpi? I've been a huge fan of him in a long time, so i wanted a slowmotion verson so i could try to do the kata his way :)
He has a pretty good kime, and he's doing perfectly good kata, especialy enpi/empi whatever, its only about school of shotokan, that he has learned kata like this, its not a mistake, just a little bit diference in hikite between his and others, i agree that's a shotokan school is a unity of the same, but the world is big and, a little diference in teaching kata is not mistake, but we must work to ensure that we all must do the same kata, as well as kumite, bunkai etc.
that's not a typo actually. If you transcribe the Japanese correctly, it is written "Enpi". The sound before the "p", just becomes an "m" (the character used in Japanese is still an "n" though). Henceforth writing it "Enpi" is correct, and the writing "m" is more or less made by transcribers, so that people who don't speak Japanese still pronounce it correctly.
I have to say that Sensei Luca Valdesi's performance was very good. Why do some people criticise him instead of giving someone credit when credit is due? I am aware that some people do not believe in KATAs so when they see this performance, they are sceptical if the techniques would work in a real fight. Even among the early masters after Gochin Funakoshi, the split in JKA was due to one group wanting to remain traditional, teaching karate as a combat art, while another wanting to promote it as a sport. But Gochin Funakoshi believed in KATAs, and was said to teach only 15 KATAs. So was he wrong? He did not really teach karate and only taught a dance which was made up to look like a martial art? If so, he had the Japanese fooled big time.
It’s not a beauty show. you don’t “perform” you express the martial way with discipline and spirit, I’m not a Karate student but this man skips stances and does a lot of unnecessary movements (such as moving mouth). He may understand the motion but doesn’t understand the impact they would have in a real confrontation, which makes them so rushed, without using the whole body and breathing. I am national poomsae champion in Taekwondo Great Britain. I have trained with Grandmaster Ik Pil Kang, once world number 1 in patterns as s well as Grandmaster Shin 9th Dan. They corrected me a lot as well as others have. Nobody is perfect. This man, however has a long way to go and needs to study Karate more outside of Kata. I get there are a lot of “keyboard warriors” out there, but I generally write truly from my true and personal experiences, just trying to help.
@@oscarpearson7981we say “perform” kata in karate. And nobody in karate thinks kata is for fighting. Kata stances aren’t even fighting stances. This is a shotokan kata JKA style. Then we have Shotokai, which is also shotokan, the exact same kata is done with a completely different rhythm, fluid and no breaks at all. I wouldn’t judge without asking why they do it like that, but definitely a different way to look at the kata. And every style of karate has totally different rhythm based on their own point of view, even when doing the same katas.
What‘s wrong about it? If you think that he is wrong, then please send me the link of the correct way of doing Enpi/Empi,because I do it like him. Thank you =)
Or try Sensei Ohta, on youtube. Traditional Shotokan, JKA. The source of Shotokan. I knew him in the 80's when he was the young asistant to Sensei Enoeda, the "Tiger" of JKA! He has developed into an exceptional Kata Karateka.
I personally do not like Luca Valdesi s way of doing kata. Hes good i give him that.. but i dont know. He tends to "decorate" the form to much. Besides he makes sounds with his mouth to give the kata an effect. And by the way he breathes is not the correct way to breathe in traditional karate do .. you can clearly see his mouth constantly opens and closes co stantly . Luca just gives a sort of flash to his katas . Not the actual way to perform a kata...
There is not one only wat to do a kata, a kata is a story in form of series of mouvement that you can tell in different way. It’s just his way to perform this kata.
I would be more concerned about the opponents noise ìn a real situation also sound and movement when used together give you a better idea of your opponent's reactions and stability under psychological and physical stress. ..a lion cub purrs and not the lion...if the sound you make is not in sync with the movement then the greater the distraction.
He has incredibly quick hands. Unfortunately this goes against the entire point of kata competition, which is for your techniques to actually be seen. Kudos to his athleticism though.
Hello mister Enkamp, It's always a pleasure to watch your videos... I'm writing this comment to know your thoughts about Shotokan karate, which is the one I practice. Also, I wanted to know what you think about this athlete, Luca Valdesi. What's your opinion about his technique? I do enjoy your videos, you make me want to get better and better, trying to keep Shoshin's mentality. Thank you, for everything you're doing. P.S. Is Karate Nerd in China going to be published on TH-cam too?
just took a closer look at way he is doing in slow mo, and i don't like it. Skipping some stances, and sequence gedan barai -> age tsuki is done really fast only because of lack of stop and improper technique imo. What do you think about it Jesse? I've been learned that after most gedan barai i make have to be at least small stop with kime, and here we don't have it...
The most important thing about when doing a kata, isn't if the hikite gets pulled perfectly back or not so perfectly. The important thing is about the power. So what if the hikite gets pulled the whole way back, if ur strike isn't strong enough? I'm sure u can't even do the kata 10% as gd as he does it
Fast as hell but incomplete. He cheats moves by shortening the motion. The back stances are very long, almost even weight distribution. Points for returning to the start spot though.
I was watching this thinking "If I give my opinion in the comments I am gonna get slated but I cant let this shit go" , then I saw this as the first comment and thought " Thank fuck someone else sees it".
If you slow down the video and watch his arms....... there is not technique and difficulty in doing that, he just moves them fast........ that's all, sorry, I had to say it.
There is no doubt that he is a great athlete and karateka. However, he is skipping some techniques and stances. Every gedan barai is just a fluke. He starts the technique, but than moves into the next one. Many techniques that supposed to be 1-2 goes straight to 2, with ha small hint of 1. There is no doubt that he is fast, but he also achieves speed by not finishing the techniques. However the last technique in a combo is always strong. That's why it looks "great". Some people like it, others don't. Watch it at 0.25 speed and judge by yourself.
He's got that snap; he's got that zing; he knows how to do that kata thing.
Yess
No...
Yes...
No, you dont now about karate, dat kata it's the best kata ever...
WKF, JKA, FSKA are all Shotokan, but each group performs kata differently.
This is a very well done kata
I only need to say this. I also thought that he is doing the most fantastic kata. what a speed, what strength. just perfect. until I downloaded the movie and played it on a editing video software. I played it in 1/10 of a sec. the conclusion is this : The man skeeps postions. his speed prvents seeing it by the referees.
yeah, you are right. i was wondering how he could possibly be that fast but he is definitely skipping stances.
Well, if your karate is too fast for the naked eye then you must be doing SOMETHING right.
SonicPAJ He’s going too fast because he’s doing the kata without the regard for certain stances, so from a traditional and formal standpoint what he did was incorrect.
Really???
Wow!
Absolutely great kata and effort. Yes, one does compromise technique for speed. But this is fast ,hard and very impressive.

Remember, kata is an interpretation of techniques put into a sequence. It might not be done your way so respect the kareteka and his interpretation.
Exactly, the "compromised" technique is what you would end up doing in a REAL fight. Important for them to remember that.
This is excellent: super fast, powerful and precise. The softer movements, too , are well executed. Very respectable rendition of Empi, ossu.
Sono fiero di essere italiano, dopo averlo visto! Incredibile, un maestro per tutti i karateka.
I just learned Empi and this video was very helpful
Guys this is WKF style and not traditional karate....
OSS !
Its shotokan
ALISDAIR BUCK shot okay is tskf not wkf
Ben world karate federation is not a style
Ellis Henry exactly
Beautiful kata,Luca Vladesi's power is incredible. That is what i love about this kata

.. but an impressive dance though!
Luca is definitely one of the Kata legends.
Sometimes the stances are sacrifised too much for speed.

I really don't understand why people so much complaints he is done awesome good.
Maestro d Italiano ;)
Watch at 0.25 speed
Finished in 1 minute!
He is so awesome! Just one thing. I tried to study how he does his kata by playing it 0.25 speed on TH-cam. It doesn't seem that all the stances are done. He skips some of the stances.. Is that right?
I've noticed this as well but this isn't the best example of Enpi from him. There are better times tho :)

Sometimes kata is done so fast it hides it’s inadequacies ...
Good balance and kata strong
i like his balance a lot! and it seems like if he was rushing to finish it, the pace was off sometimes, also very powerful techniques!
Esse domina o KIME. Incorporou o espírito do Karatê.
Magnifique 😊
0:30 which way is my hand supposed to be again???
0:48 Pieeeeee!
if you take a closer look you will see that he lackes also kime and power, its fast and that is all the WKF judges want to see, it looks spectacular, it fits to tlevision and the IOC

Soy un karateka novato y me sirvio paramimitar y hacer bien el kara este video
Awesome kata! Also is he shouting only "pi!" at the beggining?:)
I like this guy

I think he is the king of kata
great job.. nice focus.!!
very good
I guess he reinvented the traditional front stance, along with his chambered arm sticking out to the side.
Amazing.
Wow!! That was AMAZING!
Geez😂 never seen anyone w such speed and focus.
amazing
Nice kata
Estuvo impecable, lo felicito...
Gooddddd.

La kata es de competencia pero el participante no termina sus tecnicas lo cual le resta apresiacion.
Ricardo Alberto Gonzalez Ramirez concuerdo
What style is this? I though this was thought out and had vision in the performance. I see lots of criticisms here and patiently await their reply.
