  • Enpi (燕飛), also frequently transliterated as Empi, is a kata practiced by Shotokan and other karate styles. Enpi means Flying Swallow
Enpi comes from the Okinawan martial art of Tomari-te, where it first appeared in 1683[citation needed]. It is believed to have been influenced by Chinese boxing. It is the sister kata to Wansu. Funakoshi Gichin changed the name to Enpi when he moved to the Japanese mainland in the 1920s. Funakoshi changed the names of many of the kata, in an effort to make the Okinawan art more palatable to the then nationalistic Japanese. The most commonly accepted theory about its creation and development is that a Sappushi Wang Ji, an official from Xiuning, transmitted the kata while serving on Okinawa. Legend has that Wang Ji had the habit of throwing and jumping on his adversaries. Because of this dynamic form of combat, this kata resembles a swallow in flight.
In Gichin Funakoshi's dojo, Enpi was considered an example of the Shôrin (light and fast), rather than the Shôrei (strong and powerful) kata

To me Naka Sensei has what I would refer to as a 'Curious Mind'. By this I mean that he is always seeking for better ways, checking this and that, and offering suggestions.

I always had a difficult time with this kata. In my opinion, it's the hardest of the sentei kata to do well.

The reasoning at 2:54 does NOT make any sense. Your punch can have a simply longer range by extending your shoulder!! its that simple. its completely IRRELEVANT and impractical to do a body punch then raise your fist to head/neck height. wtaf??

You're hitting the opponent's chin with the rising punch through the guard.

I dont really get the lesson. Why is it so important to do the kata his way? He just shows how it should be done without explaining why

@@fireblade9781maybe, just maybe. The situation is on short distance. Really short and to keep your feet in the same place so after punch you can set up ur next move

I don't understand what you don't understand. In JKA, the short way is the best way.

JKA Kata focus more on biomechanical principles rather than exagerated performances. The reason you should do the kata as he says lies on the body mechanisms studied for years by generations of JKA instructors, many of them graduated in Physical Education.

It is wrong... Dead wrong.. He showed choku zuki in the other palm. And he put the hand down and raised choku zuki, then his hand little out side.. He is making you all fool... For the reason isfirstly choku zuki is controlled with sholder and arm pit. There after raising handloosing armpit and sholder. That is why it happens.. If you loose both hand first, after raising hand it will come inside the palm... Got it guys. I am ready to proove this. Challenge?... Bullshit. Majorities are uneducated and fan of masters. So very difficult to agree what i mentioned🙏🏻
