1992, 16 years old....driving 10 hours alone through the North Carolina mountains to a funeral.........playing this album on a tape player again and again......a side ...b side....my solace, my only friend..........comfort in music was born that day.
Recently I found out Peter wrote this song for Anne Sexton, her tragic haunted life and eventual suicide,Peter managed to write something of beauty, and of incredible imagery in his lyrics and video. He amazes me how compassionate and kind he is and how thought and emotionally provoking his art is. I almost cant grasp it in my head, but somehow my heart does ,................Thank You Peter.
This is a sad and serious song which I recently rediscovered. It has a new meaning for me as I am struggling through a divorce and trying to help my young sons with the transition. I miss my deceased father greatly, and hope I can be that same kind of father to my boys. My God, I cannot believe how much this song makes me cry.
I listened to this song constantly the week my son was born. Walking round deserted hospital grounds in the middle of the night while my partner was in labour. A place where people come to get fixed or are told mortality is breathing down their necks or in my son's case; the realisation of a new life, hopefully happy and full of great experiences for a long time to come.
My mom died last year of cancer. She was in a Hospice and it was located on Mercy Street. It was the first time I had heard this song and it still brings tears to my eyes.
Essa música me lembra muitas outras. Svarog do Akvarium (procure no Google, é uma banda russa muito boa), By This River e Julie With do Brian Eno.
In the darkness of my small teenager room... listening to that song, looking at those images... it was like entering a cathedral and letting go of all the heavy loads and trouble i was wearing. Peter, you're a magician for that. Wonderful time.
He has spent a lot of time studying world beat, real world beat, traveling and seeing and playing with indigenous peoples. That's why a good deal of his music is so primordial, you feel it in your soul. Love his work.
I'm glad so many people paid attention to this song. That's Peter Gabriel for you. He as the ablility to write something extremely personal, and yet it can relate to everybody.
¡Maravillosa!
Feeling lost, longing for a time when climbing in your fathers arms would make you feel safe and loved again. Things I long for everyday, if only I could hug him one last time....a perfect song for that lost feeling. I love this song, even if it is bittersweet.
What else can one say about Peter Gabriel other than he is CLASS personified. Such an amazing artist... such an amazing song...... It just touches the soul....
Absolutely brilliant, one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs to pull those deepest feelings from our hearts. Peter Gabriel is an artist of integrity, humanity and a true understanding of what sits in our hearts. One of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs.
and i love it how everything is in black and white and dark symbolizing the struggles of depression and sad times, the song itself almost shines as a light of hope throughout the video
this song is brilliant and kind of frightening. this song needs the suitable atmosphere. In Feb 07 I was in Norway, several hundred KMs north of Oslo, in the midst of nowhere. late night, I swichted on this tune, put on my wireless headphones and went for a walk. The temperatore was no more than -20C°, the street was dark, even darker were the huge forests. I went for a walk with a sight astonishing and the music indiscribable.
I listened to this on repeat when I was in labor with my daughter for 36 hours. You should being it to the hospital when you go, it's very meditative when you are in pain.
I don't want to disturb xour happiness, but for me every Gabriel's song is a favorite! He is "the Voice" (sorry for the ones before) and his personality give me the opportunity to say that this Man of te 20th and 21st century, deserve to have a Nobel Price, if not for the Peace, for the Love of Mankind! Luv U Peter
For the first time I listened to this song when I started my studies at university (next year it´ll be a quarter of century - damned!). Full of enthusiasm and love, full od compassion with all beings - this song was my first touch with Peter Gabriel and his music - it was like to find a lost twin. And still it takes...
This song is sad and moving, when you match Anne's life and how it was for her, with the lyrics, music, and even the video. I think Peter did Anne a lot of justice with this and that she would be proud and extremely thankful.
I love how Tony Levin's bass playing adds an even more somber and menacing tone to this. It adds a LOT that wouldn't be there without it. Love this song.
What a beautiful song. I'd never heard it before until yesterday....when I just played it over and over all day. My kind of music, deep and reflective.
Amazing... after one year, so many comments on deep feelings everyone has listening to this pure jewel... If needed go through oldest posts to get the meaning of it (surprising). God bless you Anne. God bless you Peter for giving us such a treasure. I don't remember a song brinking back more intimate and universal feelings: childhood and what it made us are such deep, complexe and crucial matters for the rest of our lives... Good luck everyone on your Mercy Street's journeys...
It sishard to describe in words about Peter Gabriels voice etc. I can only say at the end of my day or when I am sad, discouraged, chilling, wotever the case..I listen to him. I do not have a word to day as it is an experience a journey to appreciate and absorb Peter. His words are from truth of real life happenings to all of us somewhere. Very spiritual trip.
Years ago I listened to this enough to learn the lyrics. I still love it, and can always just play it in my mind any time. Peter Gabriel's music is timeless.
I remember I was 16 y.o. when I first saw the video to 'Shock the monkey' by Peter Gabriel. I'd never seen anything like it before; You have to remember this was 1984 and videos were still very new. By the time that he released 'So', I was already a huge fan. This was the first concert I ever attended at 18 y.o.
"Corridors of pale green and gray." That line reminds me of the of St. Vincent's Hospital when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I always think of him when I hear this song.
Just my all time favourite song, seen Gabriel perform this live a number of times and it sends shivers down my spine. Listen to it with the memory of Anne Sexton in your head, this song about her life is a fitting tribute by Peter Gabriel to a wonderful poet whose life was just so sad.
soul with no leak at the seams. words that support like bones. secret things in the warm velvet box... kissing mary's lips. haunting, poetic, timeless. thanks
Once I read Fever Ray had a cover of this song, heard it and loved it. Came here to check the original and omg, so great, so gorgeous!!!! I'm in love with both versions :)
Peter Gabriel is the most important musician of the 20 century, and now. Amazing!!! He's created the label "Realworld", to make us know about the other music of the planet. This man is a over...
I read the Anne Sexton's poetry book "Live or dead"... This is so tender, wonderful and sad... I can understand that Mr. Gabriel wrotes a song about Her. His humanity and sensibility are excepctionals.
I remember disliking this when I was a little girl and avoided it up until this day. I finally got myself to listen to it again and have absolutely no idea why I disliked it in the first place. It's a great song!
There's a sadness to it. Children don't need sadness. As an adult you can learn to appreciate the bitter-sweet parts of life. If you liked this when you were young, then you were probably an old soul, and knew enough of the bitterness of life to no shy away from them. But that's just my opinion. May not apply to you. Enjoy.
dkerris That's a wise opinion. I like it! I have always been told I was wiser than my peers. That's probably the reason said peers come to me for advice and empathy.
Anne, with her father is out in the boat Riding the water Riding the waves on the sea...
This song takes me back to memories that linger in my mind of my abusivechildhood years gone by...How I wish I could turn back the hands of time and have my childhood back again...
1992, 16 years old....driving 10 hours alone through the North Carolina mountains to a funeral.........playing this album on a tape player again and again......a side ...b side....my solace, my only friend..........comfort in music was born that day.

Ken Brome Indeed utterly brilliant, and utterly depressing.
+Rein Teder your words are tragically truth... I think the same... specially, when I hear I grieve,,,
Don't Give Up is about suicide too? or maybe both songs refer to Anne Sexton.
Indeed,, you still can't figure him out. I don't try!
Very well said Ken
This is a sad and serious song which I recently rediscovered. It has a new meaning for me as I am struggling through a divorce and trying to help my young sons with the transition. I miss my deceased father greatly, and hope I can be that same kind of father to my boys.
My God, I cannot believe how much this song makes me cry.
Update: I am now remarried with a three year old daughter, grateful for them both and for my sons, and in one of the happiest periods of my life.
Oh tempo bom!
My mom died last year of cancer. She was in a Hospice and it was located on Mercy Street. It was the first time I had heard this song and it still brings tears to my eyes.
This is a brazilian rhythm called "baião'', played with the triangle 0:40, surdo and congas by the brazilian percussionist Djalma Corrêa.
Boa observação
+Cauim Ferreira Grande Cauim!
Essa música me lembra muitas outras. Svarog do Akvarium (procure no Google, é uma banda russa muito boa), By This River e Julie With do Brian Eno.
thank you
Wonderful song

A stunning piece of music. Timeless, one of my all time favourites. Up there with Brothers in Arms

Tem um instrumento chamado triângulo. Usaram bem. Ficou espetacular.
What else can one say about Peter Gabriel other than he is CLASS personified. Such an amazing artist... such an amazing song...... It just touches the soul....
Jeden z najpiękniejszych utworów w historii muzyki rozrywkowej. Uwielbiam.
such a beautiful song by a beautiful song writer .
Absolutely brilliant, one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs to pull those deepest feelings from our hearts. Peter Gabriel is an artist of integrity, humanity and a true understanding of what sits in our hearts. One of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs.
peter gabriel's songs are always so layered and feel so mystic
My heart is healed everytime I listen to this song.
Same here. ❤🎶
Halt and Catch Fire brought me here ❤️🙏🏻 Haven’t heard this song in years!
Hauntingly Beautiful....It takes you somewhere else.
I think back to the pain when my daughter had a 'stillbirth"....i played this song then.
29 years and still as vivid & haunting as ever. My favorite Gabriel song.
one of his best. I shut my eyes and i'm 16 again
and i love it how everything is in black and white and dark symbolizing the struggles of depression and sad times, the song itself almost shines as a light of hope throughout the video

Always loved this song, even as a child. Having my first child at the moment (still in mummy's tummy), and our baby kicks like crazy when this plays!
I listened to this on repeat when I was in labor with my daughter for 36 hours. You should being it to the hospital when you go, it's very meditative when you are in pain.
No cover will ever be able to capture the beauty of this song.

For the first time I listened to this song when I started my studies at university (next year it´ll be a quarter of century - damned!). Full of enthusiasm and love, full od compassion with all beings - this song was my first touch with Peter Gabriel and his music - it was like to find a lost twin. And still it takes...
It's nice to know that some people still appreciate 80's music. I love this song.
Essa música é perfeita!
no one has this sound but Gabriel. true music master
PG an organic musical genius period
This song is sad and moving, when you match Anne's life and how it was for her, with the lyrics, music, and even the video. I think Peter did Anne a lot of justice with this and that she would be proud and extremely thankful.

"Corridors of pale green and gray."
That line reminds me of the of St. Vincent's Hospital when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I always think of him when I hear this song.
There are so many greats from this unusual genius. Senseless to try to pick his best.
+Steven Craig this album and the walleye song. they are the best. kate bush
Introduced this song to my son who died a month later. I still cry years later when I hear this song.
