My wedding song, but I swear it was playing in my head the first time I met my love, "The light the heat ... I am complete." It really was love at first conversation. So cheesy, but true. I just knew. And a lot of people thought we wouldn't make it because he was six years younger. Here we are, though, almost 25 years later, still going strong, two boys, two dogs, military life. Keep on fighting the good fight. He's always been the one. There was never a question.

The feeling of the chorus conveys what heaven could feel like after many years of suffering. That's sometimes one of the only hopes that keeps me going, on the darkest days
Heaven is already here with us if we can find it in ourselves to see the presence. There is so much pain and suffering on the way there though and it is easy to be distracted and lose our way...
This is about a depth of feeling of completely loving someone heart, body, & soul. Absolutely stunning, & right on the mark. He sings so very eloquently what few can ever hope to express.
@@shellyfagan5794 I remember Phil Collins in an interview. The interviewer said, wow your songs are so deep so meaningful, where does that come from? His reply was no where I just write they don't mean any thing. I personally thought that was a fabulous answer. Singers writers etc aren't spiritual masters, sure they are creative but we all are. The power to give birth is more of a spiritual connection to the universe than writing or singing a song.
This is my first time listening to this song . I have just come from Friday Night comics live zoom where we were combining abstracted panels and song lyrics and someone had suggested the lyrics ' see the doorway to a thousand churches' which really leapt out at me... so I asked in the zoom chat as with using someone else's lyrics I feel it is important to acknowledge the artist, and that has led me here. Thanks

Although his rupture from Genesis was quite sad, it's hard not to see that value of Peter Gabriel as a solo artist. After all, we got this amazing album AND Phil Collins as the new lead vocals of Genesis - a win/win as far as I'm concerned. Two musical greats for the formation of one epically awesome band. Thank you Peter for your amazing presence in my life, as well as Phil Collins

It was bittersweet for sure but you are correct that if it wasn't for that, who knows what we would have missed out on? Both Peter and Phil are immensely talented and have brought so much joy to people's lives through music. Genesis just closed out their last tour ever in London this last weekend. Just imagine how PG must have felt listening to the first playback of this in the studio. I wonder how long it took him to realize he had just finished one of the greatest love songs of all time.
Well, tbh PG wasn't quite pleased with this version as it was Daniel Lanois choice to trim the song and give it cohesion. Peter's live version of the song is the one he wanted to be in So. I guess there's a studio recording of that version in some bootlegs.
This album brought so much to the table. In my estimation, it is easily the most beautiful love song ever created. When Gabriel created this song, he said it had a dual meaning. He said that’s this song both describes a romantic relationship and a spiritual one. It’s the love of our creator and our creator’s love for us. Those aren’t his exact words. I heard him perform this song, and it bought tears to my eyes! Good tears 💜. Peace to you beautiful people who listening to this song.
It's hard for anyone to hear this album and not feel the spiritual depth to it. It's an album of great awakening coming from a very deep darkness to a dazzling light.

A few years later, after that movie came out, I was a freshman in college, and my boyfriend copied that scene from the movie after we had a fight and played this song on his boombox down below my dorm room window 😂
I found this sound when I was so so broken. When I sing it, I'm singing it to an ineffable depth of being, a sort of unified world soul, anthropomorphised. Still broken held together with a sweetness of joy and sorrow and hope. Whoever you are stay sweet x
I can just hear the start and instantly I'm covered in goose-bumps. And it's such a simple song yet it expresses so much in the sound and words. It's like liquid sunshine.
This song held my spirits up during one of the most difficult time in my life. I would pop the single into my walkman and play both sides continuously. The passion in Peter's voice, and the music is truly transcending. It still makes me cry.
This song makes me instantly tear up. I miss my childhood, the 80s, the lack of hatred, the feelings of peace & excitement... If you didn't live thru the 80s/90s you just don't know, but this song perfectly encapsulates how it felt to live thru it.
I agree with your thoughts... however the lack of hate? Hate for??? Did u live in America then? Respectfully... the lack of hate or the lack of camera phones?
This is a very beautiful song! A true example of how hard a man tries to keep his relationship with his woman surviving. A man who truly loves whom he loves. All the ups and downs are just a part of the love he has for the one he loves. Rules are meant to be bent, obstacles are meant to be overcome, all in the name of love.
Agreed, he experimented until he found his sound and presentation of expression altogether through his music, he has a great sense of humor about it and during speeches for awards he recieved would reference when he dressed up like a flower and a walking "sexually transmited disease" as opposed to tony banks of genesis wearing a different pastel of sweater occasionally lol
for years this song made me nostalgically hopeful, painful break-ups here and there . the more time went on, the more I was sure that happy ending wouldn't chance my way. yet like distance thunder on far away spring days I finally met her...been married to a sweet, pretty lady for 20 years. now, this is a victory song...can run out into the rain smiling...with arms outstretched
Your momma had great taste! I sang this to my newborn at CVS 2 days ago. "Bb girl, this is mister Peter Gabriel," as I sang it aloud. "They don't make great music like this anymore " I hope you find moments that continue to remind you of her presence in your life. Looking at life through her eyes ❤

One of the greatest songs to ever exist... Thank you Mr. Gabriel!!!
its not just music its a experience !
There was never a question.
hey ! by military life do you mean you have a career in the military? or that you run a military style lifestyle (how disciplined you are etc.) ?
@@cameronlynch4961 my husband is active duty. My dad served (Vietnam) and so did my husband’s grandfather (WWII)

I'm aware that sounds terrible in written form so I will add 😘😘😘😘😘
Cheesy, yes. But it also accurately describes how I feel about my wife. I still tear up when I hear it.
God bless you both❤
Sadly an era that can never be repeated nor replicated.
Honored to have witnessed and been part of the 80s.
Great times they were, musically for certain. Do you remember waiting for someone's new album to come out, getting it, going home and excitedly listening from start to finish with the headphones on? Such happy times!
GREAT Rematk..
FnA right man. Hell yes it was great. Cruising and jamming out..... When you had to actually interact with other human beings....and you didn't have anonymity on a computers.....if you ran that pie hole there was a good chance you'd get it split open.....so you were more polite and considerate. I miss those days when a boy had nuts and girls had butts.
@@sinkingisland7769 yes.....it was awesome. And recording your songs on tape off the radio.....it sounded like ass but you were glad to have it.....and you sang over it anyway.....so it really didn't matter.
It's coming back
Such a raw beautiful song. No auto tune or generic millennial whoop. People often say that things were better in the old days and are clearly deluded but when it comes to music they are totally correct.
I had a special friend who passed away from cancer. She would call my radio station and request this song. Thanks Pete😢
I don't think she could have requested a better song.

Hi Tamara,hope you’re okay ?
Probably one of the most incredible songs from his music from the 80s .. genius in the music industry
The older I become the more I realise how lucky we were to live with great artists- none better than this genius.
Music is mathematical and we use mathematics to understand the universe. Musicians touch the face of Creation. Peter Gabriel is a spiritual master.
@@shellyfagan5794 Sure I like Peter Gabriel, but that's a bit of a bold statement, fair play to you.

Classic. This song is truly timeless.
Thanks

The Lyrics...
Love I get so lost, sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are
All my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes
Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light,
The heat I see in your eyes
In your eyes in your eyes
In your eyes in your eyes
In your eyes in your eyes
Amen. Glory to God.

Dopler vs Dahmer effect... When the person you like does it its romantic as hell. But when someone else does it your like "stalker."
I remember riding in my Daddy's white Thunderbird with red interior driving around Nashville with this song blaring on a beautiful sunny day & now missing that carefree feeling. "The Living Years" by Mike + The Mechanics also gives me this same haunted nostalgic feeling. It will never be the same again. Milks my emotions dry every time & takes me back.....❤🩹
Although his rupture from Genesis was quite sad, it's hard not to see that value of Peter Gabriel as a solo artist. After all, we got this amazing album AND Phil Collins as the new lead vocals of Genesis - a win/win as far as I'm concerned. Two musical greats for the formation of one epically awesome band. Thank you Peter for your amazing presence in my life, as well as Phil Collins
I love both of them
If this song is part of discovery/ disclosure....thank you...But I don't think Peter or Phil are better than each other.
In fact I will tell you that they are equally important to us all.
Please try and pay attention to what they have done for us. If you can't remember the 80's I will tell you that I can remember things from before I was born. Wrap your head around that....
@@jeremyhammond5173 Nobody said one was better than the other. Have trouble with comprehension do you ? Read what was actually written and you will find it is YOU who need to pay attention.
It was bittersweet for sure but you are correct that if it wasn't for that, who knows what we would have missed out on? Both Peter and Phil are immensely talented and have brought so much joy to people's lives through music. Genesis just closed out their last tour ever in London this last weekend. I am fortunate enough to say that I had the opportunity to see them play here in the States just a few months ago. Their music has touched me in ways I couldn't even begin to explain.

Such a beautiful song /melody.
From what I read, this song deals with a relationship with God in a romantic sense. Peter is so brilliant
I commented that he is the Kendrick Lamar of his time 😔💙🤍🙏🏽A love letter/plea to GOD💙🤍🙏🏽
He is also just gorgeous as well as talented xx
Maybe it's about his twin self not God? He doesn't seem like a fan of religion.
@@staciharrington-parker9938 He considers himself a Christian with a lot of Buddhist beliefs.
Not everyone practices or interprets religion or belief in God (or other higher powers) the same way.
NOPE. It was about how he felt about Rosana Arquette and had ZERO to do with god. That's you projecting that onto the song.
Peter writes such incredible music, this is so beautiful. i love his voice.
Simply beautiful. And Youssou N´Dour voice adds a plus of beauty.
Last time, I actually loved a woman. This was our song. It's been a long time since 1991.
One of my favorite songs. If this song don't touch your soul, you don't have one.

Where does this man receive his inspiration from? This is not Genius, this is altogether on another level.
He's more in touch with his spiritual side than most people.

His inspiration for this song was Rosanna Arquette. The same person who Rosanna by Toto is written about. 😜

He had a voice nobody has had. I hear the voice I immediately know it’s him. Great voice.
14 years after dressing up as a literal flower on stage, PG really hit it out of the park with this one, the greatest love song of ALL TIME
Agreed, he experimented until he found his sound and presentation of expression altogether through his music, he has a great sense of humor about it and during speeches for awards he recieved would reference when he dressed up like a flower and a walking "sexually transmited disease" as opposed to tony banks of genesis wearing a different pastel of sweater occasionally lol
