  • A recent trip over Route 52 brought me into the small town of Welch West Virginia. It was my 3rd visit to the town and I am already looking forward to going back. This area was hit hard with the reduction of coal mine jobs but they have worked hard to improve their town and I am impressed. It is definitely a place I will go back to and do another video. #westvirginia #smalltowns #welch

McDowell and Welch has such a rich and mesmerizing history...Went there this summer from Germany. True Salt of the Earth type people. Great video!

I was born in Welch in the mid 50s, raised there until I went into the military, and then worked for the government until I retired.
I sometimes think of moving back.
My one Grandfathers family moved into the area sometime in the 17/1800s.
My other Grandfather moved there from Kentucky to work the mines.
He got a mine job back in the 1920s as an underground miner, it was in McDowell county.
He said they used horses underground to do the heavy pulling and hauling.
Once they took the horses underground, they stayed down there for life, they were not brought back to the surface unless they died.
The mine companies would hire professional gunmen, to keep the peace and keep the union out.
He said one of the gunmen kept a german Luger tucked under his belt at all times, he said he had killed six or seven men.
The gunmen were hired to protect the investments of the mine owners/investors.
Reminds me of the Cattleman's Association hiring Tom Horn to protect their investments, which turned into a hired hit man killing farmers moving in under the Homesteading act who were then running barbed wire and fencing off pastures used for grazing.
I could write a book with the things he has told me.
Sid Hatfield died on the courthouse steps, he was showing up for a court date, baldwin/felts detectives were waiting for him.
Sid's cousin was the Sheriff of McDowell county at the time, he happened to be away on a fishing trip when this went down.
Sid was setup by a corrupt system.

I grew up near Welch and still have many cousins living there. Daddy was a coal miner in the forties through sixties when we moved North in 64 when i was twelve. Beautiful memories.

The best wild trout fishing in the state is in the southern part of our state. Most think of the northern areas as being trout waters. Within a 100 miles of Welch or less is very populated with wild reproducing trout. Great video, thanks!!

Yes, that was the old football field. We had a girls football team that played a football game once a year. This was started by Pamelia Evans with the approval of the Principal, Mr. Romeo in 1972.

Would it be possible for me to use some of your video footage, from the McDowell courthouse for a video I am editing for my TH-cam channel? I didn't get quite enough background footage to accompany the interviews of local folks I did in Welch and being that I live in Germany it is hard for me to go back. I will of course credit you in the description. Thank you in advance!

At about 13min 30 secs in you are talking about the old pictures that used to be in McDonald's as you pass Stevens Correctional Center. The razor wire of our recreation yard is seen over the outer wall. It is one of the largest employers of the county and houses state convicted inmates that are housed by the county for the state. Many people who have left here would know it as Stevens Clinic Hospital. It was one of 3 hospitals in the county when US Steel operated the mines. I was actually born there and now work there as a Case Manager.

What about the real estate prices?? Taxes?? What do they do there for a living??

    • @thetravelingunderwood
      @thetravelingunderwood  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

The job market is not that great. You have the correction facility, schools and government jobs. This use to be big in the coal industry but those jobs are much fewer. Taxes are not too bad from what I understand. I looked up the real estate and it is a very wide range of prices. Mid 50000 to 150000 depending on location and age of the homes.
